    eBay

That kind of program would send me into bankruptcy.
  2. Do these horns need to have a different circuit run to them? I am considering one on my old XS11, and was wondering if they take a huge amount of current, that would require a relay setup.

    eBay

Wow, it was just supposed to be a joke. I have no idea how to tell who is bidding against me, since the names are scrambled. My eBay id should look like i****n, but comes out as anything, when I am not logged in. Last time I looked at an item and it said a****b or something was high bidder and I was irritated since I didn't get a notification email, and lo and behold after logging in, it was me after all. hehe. Anyway, I am looking at plastic stuff, which is the most expensive stuff, since everything else is built like a tank. Anyone see the lower fairing setup that went for almost $200? sheesh.

Would all you guys quit bidding against me on eBay? Every time I try and buy a part for $10, it runs up to $200 or something. What did I ever do to you? :stirthepot::scratchchin: :hihi::hihi::rotfl:
  5. Here's how I dealt with Progressive when one of their insured sideswiped my Chrysler. I got the whole run around, and strangely enough, my adjuster had personal stuff to attend to like the one on vacation. I was assured that another would step in, which they did not. After about two weeks of this crap, i called the complaint line on the progressive website. I gave teh case number to the person on the phone, and when asked what I needed, I just said "I need the 800 number to the Kansas insurance commissioner, cause I am tired of you bastards jacking me around." The tone changed really quickly to "Now, just wait, let us try and help you... yadda yadda..." I finally got the number from her. It was a battle. Before I could even hang up the phone the adjuster was calling me on the other line. They gave me everything I asked for, and when GAP kicked in, I got a bout $1500 over the payoff of the loan. I still called the insurance commission and talked to a rep there, they said they would "look into it"
  6. You all need a tin foil hat. It trips the sensors and hides your thoughts from aliens and democrats. You did know those are thought detectors in the pavement didnt you? Notice how the lights are always slower when you are in a hurry? Its true, I never make this sort of thing up! For the motion sensors (actually high tech government x-ray vision cams, so they can see your wife nekkid) you can use a laser pointer to trip them. Just point the red dot at it and the signal will change. Sometimes it turns them all green at once, but something is better than nothing right? You just have to be faster than everyone else so as to not get hit. If neither of these work, an EMP generator of about 9 gigawatts will just fry every thing electronic within a half mile of your bike. (I am not insane, just have a terrible sense of humor.....)
  7. Do you have a set of right fairings? I need the upper and the lower. Seems like you said you had the left last time we talked, but was wondering if this is a different bike?
  8. Hey, I am from Hutch and I work in Wichita, so if you ever need a hand, let me know. I am not far away.

I am so friggen jealous of you right now.
  10. By the right fairing being rashed, does that mean completely shot?
  11. Although not about foot wear, it reminds me of a joke: A guy had just finished a great day with his buddies at the YMCA playing some intense rounds of hoops. After they showered up, he pulled out a pair of lacy pink panites and slipped them on. His buds were dumbfounded. One of them finally asked: "When did you start wearing those?" "When my wife found them in the glove box..." As far as the thong thing, isn't it more manly to call it a banna hammoc?
  12. I put a spin on adapter on my XS11, that uses the same oil filter and cover. Now I have a Goldwing oil filter on it, and I don't have to worry about ordering a filter two weeks before an oil change. The adapter I have could use any filter with a 20mm thread. The goldwing one is very small so it doesn't stick out too far.
  13. There is a fully electronic Audiovox Cruise control that doesn't take a vacuum module. Search them out on Ebay, since they are near impossible to get anywhere else. I think I would go with that on a bike. Less room taken up and no need to find a good vacuum source (No vacuum when you ride around with the throttle pinned like me. )
  14. Do they make them for 8 track players too? A 16Gb micro SD card, the size of my fingernail that holds 4 gazillion songs played on technology that took a cartridge the size of a slice of texas toast and could play 8 songs, three times, before tangling up.
  15. I took my wife to the new Mexican restaurant a few nights back. Here is a picture of their kids menu page: http://i433.photobucket.com/albums/qq60/ivanstein/IMAGE_047.jpg Why not get a kids nachos and a Margarita for the youngsters?
  16. Couple pics. Messy garage and half done venture. http://i433.photobucket.com/albums/qq60/ivanstein/Venture/IMAGE_045.jpg http://i433.photobucket.com/albums/qq60/ivanstein/Venture/IMAGE_046.jpg
  17. Serpentine belts are a blessing in many ways, but a curse to those who drive a lot of miles on gravel. Small bits of gravel get in the grooves and wear down the ridges on the pulleys where the stones hit them repeatedly. Look at the ridges of the pulley. If they have a rounded apperance on them, you won't get it to stop squeaking until you replace the pulleys. Whne they are worn down, there isn't much surface area to make contact with the belt and you can't get them tight enough to stop squeaking.
  18. I have a 1/2 inch Snap-on clicker and a 3/8 Mac clicker. Most bolts have a standardized torque, I.E. a 5/16 NC bolt is generally 35 ft-lbs. There are published charts for torque standards that are available, probably with a simple google search. When I worked on Detroit Diesels (the old ones) the spects would say things like: Rod cap nuts: Standard Crosshead Bolts: 75Ft-lbs Main bearing cap bolts : standard and so on. Detroit had a handy little book that listed all teh standard torques from a 4-40 thread all the way past 2" threads. While torque is critical, at some point, you'll get a "Calibrated Elbow" that lets you know when it is good. Common sense should tell you when you need to find a critical torque. Oil pan bolts on a Chevy 305 are finger tight with a 1/4 rattle wrench, while head bolts on a Ford 4.6l will be something like torque to 45 ft-lbs, loosen two turns, torque to 75 ft-lbs and an additional 74º. Anyone that can prove they have a torque-angle meter gets bonus points in this thread, and a free styrofoam cup. (The coffee is extra)
  19. Well, I am making more progress on my 84 standard. I have actually repaired the left upper fairing and placed it back on the bike. Just doing this took two tubes of that really nasty smelling epoxy that melts the plastic then cures. I am not sure of the structural integrity of it, but it seems to be solid feeling. I put the dash panel on with the bucket in it, and haven't put the lid on, since it doesn't have a hinge flap anymore. I am keeping my eye on ebay for these beasts. The right upper is going to take lots more work. Probably lots of fiberglass and nasty epoxy. There is enough realestate missing from it that I may have to get creative with some bondo. Right now, I really can't afford a new(er) one, since the good ones seem to be going for approximately $200 on ebay. SO EVERYONE STOP BIDDING AGAINST ME!!! After that I think I can get the rest of the panels back on. Then its off to the paint shop. I think I will leave it to a professional with some good equipment, since it will take me 47 years to rattle can it. I did the false tank, and it turned out very nice, but all the sanding and buffing took about 20 hours. There are some small cracks in the luggage to fix, then I can paint them as well. I think I may use some of that "trunk paint" on the inside, since I have no idea what they used to look like. Right now they look like they were used to haul mud. Things left to do otherwise: Track down leak in or around the gas tank. Find a bolt to hang the right muffler back up. Looks to be a special kind of bolt with a washer made in. Get some nice comfy grips. I like the Kuryakyns i have on my XS, but you don't see them for $30 just every day. New air filter. wire in a stereo. 100 mile per hour test. 1000 miles test. I am sure there is more, but I am weary, its been a long day. One last thing. I really want to thank all who have given and sold me parts, and all those that have given good advice. Some day I hope to return the favors, or at least pay it forward.
  20. Nitrogen enriched fuel? To think the EPA was all hyped up about controlling NOx emissions and forced auto manufacturers to put EGR valves on cars to lower combustion temperatures and reduce nitrogen compounds in emissions, which supposedly created acid rain. That and there is 26% nitrogen in the air the engine breathes. I am not buying it.
  21. My thoughts: The caps are line bored and in this way they would be unique to their specific position on that specific engine. The break you have should be able to be welded. I know a few guys that can TiG a pop can back together if you tear one apart. If the welder knows what they are doing and pre heats the part, takes it slow, warpage won't be a problem. Just ask around at the parts stores and such to find who the good welder is. Don't be afraid to pay either, it will definately be cheaper than a head, or re machining the one you have. In my humble but accurate opinion the best thing JB Weld has going for it are the ads on Paul Harvey. I wouldn't use the stuff in the presence of hydrocarbons (engine oil) and it likes to start getting soft at about 250ºF. By 400º, it is back to putty. I just don't think it could take the heat of an engine, nor the expansion and contraction that aluminum goest through in a heat cycle. Probably the worst case scenario woudl be that you have to have that race welded up and re bored at a machine shop, which might run you a couple hundred bucks. Mot sure what a used head goes for...
  22. All I can say is that killing two only costs $65, I have some people on my list..... ok better shut up now. Sad fact is that you have to be aware enough for you and the other guy, cause he is using his cell and fiddling with the radio. I have saved my butt several times by looking ahead 3-4 times as far as I would in a cage and being ready for the worst.
  23. ummmmmm.......... Isn't that the purpose of a ball hitch? So the trailer can swivel on uneven ground or when the bike leans?
  24. EGR valves is an Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve. The purpose of it is to mix a bit of the exhaust into the intake charge, lowering combustion temperatures, thus reducing NOx emissions. What you are referring to, in actuality, is the PCV, or Positive Crankcase Ventilation set up. This pulls a vacuum on the crankcase, reducing blowby gasses, which are highly acidic in nature and cause the oil to degrade very fast. PCV had the side benefit of reburning those gasses, but, to my knowledge doesn't affect emissions in any significant way. To the other guys that think there has to be a vacuum on the crankcase, that is inaccurate. The crankcase will build pressure, if sealed perfectly. The blowby on the cylinders needs a place to escape, and a vent is all it needs. Like stated above, a vacuum helps control these gasses and keeps the oil healthy longer, but is not necessary to the operation of the engine. To the original poster, I have a very similar setup on my XS. That filter will get oily and smoke when you are at a stop. The combustion gasses will vent ok, though. It has never bothered me, but you will get oily residue around it.
  25. I am a bit of a novice, been riding for under a year on my XS1100. I spent a huge amount of time, probably 8 hours the first weekend in the church parking lot on a Saturday. Doing circles and figure eights until I could turn the bike inside a parking stall that is marked out. At first it is intimidating to do, but after a while, you realize that staying very slow and trying to balance that thing around a tight u turn is very hard, and if you carry just a few mph more speed and let it lean a bit, it comes right around. I can do turns at full steering deflection, which requires power modulation rather than steering, thats where the friction zone comes into play. I am not sure what the weight difference on the XS and venture are, but I can make my 900lb (driver included) XS dance. When I park, I find a parking spot with two open and do a u turn in them and then back the bike to the curb (if there is one). I haven't had much of a chance to run the Venture yet, but the first impression I got when I was riding it, was "Wow, this thing steers light and handles well". Like I said, I have only the XS11 to compare to. One thing I practice, that I rarely ever hear anyone talking about, is to work through scenarios in my mind before they ever happen. When I am driving my cage to work, and I see a scoot get in a bad situation, I think through it as if it were me, and how I would react. Even watching videos of bikes going over helps, if you focus on a solution, before it happens to you. This kind of "Pre programs" your brain. It can save you critical half seconds of decision time, or even worse, freezing up in fear. This method really helped me when I started riding, it made my practice more productive, and has saved my butt a few times. So when your laying in bed at night and can't sleep, start visualizing your self, on your bike, making perfect, tight turns. Imagine getting into a bad place, where the bike is going to fall, and then get out of it. It sounds like mythical snake oil, but it works. It has helped me with everything form SATs in high school, to wrestling, driving, riding, and even dating. I can tell you, it isn't that great at helping me loose weight though.....
