  1. How much for a couple of those machined balls? No threading needed, I have lots of taps, but don't have the tooling to make some form tools... PS did you use an off hand grinder to make those forming tools? Not trying to steal trade secrets, but as a machinist, I find that the conventional machining is becoming a lost art, and I want to learn more. I could program a CNC lathe, but there is no art in that.

Of course, there is the ebay slide diaphragm tech tip on this site, if you need those. The only thing not covered is the rubber plugs in the jet block. Boats.net has them for $5 a pop, which is expensive. I am considering looking at Ace hardware, they have all kinds of plugs and such. If not I am going ot machine aluminum pieces that will have an oring.
  3. FWIW, my 84 has passenger floor boards. Isn't that basically the same as the 83? If so a set from an 84 would bolt right on.
  4. When you blow away a HD rider on a REAL scoot, and they give you the single finger salute, they are just showing you how big their pecker is.

  8. The only reason for resistors inthe secondary ignition system is the reduction of RFI. If you don't run some type of resistor, you will never have a crystal clear audio system. I notice you took it all out of your scoot, but when you pull up to someone at a stoplight, it will make their radio crackle and pop, so I would recommend not revving the engine much so they don't figure out its you doing it.
  9. FWIW I have synched the carbs. I did rebuild them too, but for lack of finding those absolutely stupid rubber plugs that block the jet galleys in the block, I used the old ones. I suspect this to be the culprit. When I get back to work, I am going to machine some aluminum plugs that use small orings.
  10. Well, I did get them replaced this morning. The scoot runs much better but still has a dead miss on the left rear cylinder. (#3?) I popped out the anti tamper brass plugs on the idle screws and started fiddling with the idle mix. When I got the screw about 6 turns out, the cylinder started firing half way. I guess I need to pull the carbs and rework them again... Not looking forward to it, it was a real PITA.

  12. Yeah, I guess I mis-read your post. When I run into one that is seizing, I warm it up. it helps a bunch. Also works with stubborn exhaust bolts and studs.

    Ride much??

    not an RSV, but when I got my XS11 going last August, I had put 26,000+ statute miles on it when I got rear ended in June. Its probably not fair that I use it to commute when ever the weather is above 25º and I live 50 miles from work. It isn't all that hard to rack up 700 miles a week that way.
  14. Nah, I usually remove plugs cold. It doesn't burn that bad that way. One trick I learned while wrenching cars was to warm the engine and try to pull the plug then. Sometimes the heated head will expand enough to loosen a bit. If that doesn't work, your method is next in line. I really don't want to yank the head and heli coil it.
  15. I read in another thread, I think started by Monty (Thanks!) about resistor plugs making eh scoot run bad, so, I checked and sure enough... I went to try and get some non resistor plugs, and man what a hassle. The parts guy said no place stocks non resistor type plugs anymore. He was kind enough to call several different places to find a set. So they will be here in the morning. Whew. In the midst of all this, I tried to remove the #4 plug, and it is seized in the head. I learned about this while wrenching cars, so, I can get it out ok, but now I need to find a thread chaser. I was all over town trying to find a 12mm thread chaser, and everyone tried to sell me a tap. After arguing with the 12th guy about the difference between a tap and a thread chaser, I gave up. Does anyone here know where to find a thread chaser for these bikes? Even a brand name or a website would help.

  17. Can you tell what the powder is in the Plastex kit? I have never used the stuff. So far I have tried the nasty smelling plastic epoxy stuff and some testors liquid. the epoxy was less than desirable, it didn't stick well. The testors works great if you can hold the parts from moving for three or four hours. As luck would have it, I have almost everything I can glued back together. I have a tab broke of a lower fairing, but that's about all that's left.
  18. Instead of laying it over and hitting it with a sledge, why not use a floor jack and a block of appropriately sized wood to gently bend the casing? Not trying to be a smart azz, I am really asking, since I haven't had to battle this before.
  19. I have had days like that. Except for me, when I start hunting down the jerk that left something in the way, the trail of evidence is usually self incriminating. Hope you heal soon.
  20. In theory that's all true, but in practice, I have found that each carb effects the others in some way, and you can't see that when balancing two. I made a spirit level type sync with four lines teed together out of tubing and tees from Lowes sprinkler section. I don't have any dampeners, and use ATF as the fluid, and it works very well. I think the lighter fluid doesn't matter, since this tool balances the carbs against each other instead of against atmospheric pressure like Mercury sticks and the Morgan carb synch or the gauge type synchs.
  21. I saw on another site that plastic can be repaired with inexpensive PVC glue. While I haven't tried it yet, it makes sense. IIRC Lowes has glue for ABS drain pipe, which may even be better. Any one ever try this route?

  23. I ordered some fork seals for the venture. A whole $8. Are they a pain to replace? I am an accomplished mechanic, but have never torn into fork seals on any scoot before. Anything I need to watch out for?

  25. On June 13th, I was out crusing and feeling the breeze when a teenager pulled out in front of me, I swerved and went around him. I remember him sneering at me as I passed. I put some distance between us and continued on my way. Just a couple miles down the road was the turn on to my street. I was nearly stopped, foot out, but not down, waiting to see if the oncoming person who was making a left turn to go down the same street I was turning right onto, knew I was there. I won't go unless they wave me on, as a rule. Just then tires screeching and the sound of metal crunching. I remember flying through the air, seeing my boots against the sun and then that kid looking at me from an upside down perspective. Then I hit the ground and felt my left hip go mushy. Tumbled and felt my back crunch. It seemed like forever before I stopped moving. Then the driver got out of the car and said "Woah, man. Like, I'm really sorry man." Just like the character played by Sean Penn in fast times at Rigemont High. All told I had some road rash on my right arm, busted pelvis in two places, fractured T9 vertebrae, and a really bad attitude. What could I have done different? Not much. I guess I could have not passed the kid and locked up the brakes two miles before, or I could have just stayed home.
