  1. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=BFE PLEASE NOTE: This link contains language that some may find offensive.
  2. I have been through just about every switch and connector on this bike with contact cleaner and dielectric grease. If I haven't hit them, its because I haven't found them.... Is there something that keeps them from staying on in neutral? This is the only theory I have right now, and will test it tomorrow.
  3. Is the resistor necessary? Chances are that out here in BFE, they will have non resistor caps, which is what I found with my XS. If I can't get resistor caps, will resistor plugs do in their place?
  4. Maxims have seats that feel like "a shark is taking bites out of your azz" after about 150 miles. My good friend Tod from XS11.com rides and 1100 and he found some seat covers by Stearns, at wal-mart for about $20, and they really help. TC over at that same site has sold some replacement fuse blocks that use ATC blade type fuses. I think he gets $10 each shipped. Its the same as Skydoc sells here, but without the extra junction points. They can be had at different websites for $7 or so. The neatest setup I have seen though is using individual micro fuse holders zip tied neatly in to place. The previous owner of my 79 XS11 did this and it is pretty nice, and lower profile than the fuse block.
  5. This bike is going to drive me nuts. They work fine today.
  6. Well, I took the venture out for its second short jaunt, just to get a feel for it. The fork seals are so bad they wont hold air, and the oil SPRAYS out the right seal. It has a definite miss, that comes and goes. It idles erratically, from 900 up to 3000 and back down again, even after synching the carbs. It overheats. I used a thermostat from a Geo Metro (I think) I saw somewhere that it woudl work, maybe its too hot of a thermostat. The oil warning symbol is always on, but it doesn't sound like there is an oil issue. IIRC its a level sender not a pressure sender. My headlight trim ring from ebay is a MK2 instead of a MK1 so the rubber gasket and front glass won't fit. My windshield got messed up while in the garage. Methinks one of my "assistant mechanics" was trying to help out. In spite of it all, it seemed to run straight and handle ok.
  7. My turn signals seem to have developed a problem, or have had it and I just didn't realize it. They flash fine and all, but only when I hold the switch over. When I release it, they don't stay on, they cancel. It should stay flashing until the button is pushed in instead of to the side, correct? Any ideas on where to start searching?
  8. Personally, I trust the anaerobic sealer more than I trust the rubber seal. Not much can beat some Loctite 518 on machined surfaces. I never thought about the forks leaking, that is probably it. I got to thinking and it was only after I put some air in the forks that it showed. Maybe the air pushed the oil to reveal leaking seals.
  9. I found a leak on the front caliper today, and took the caliper off, cleaned off all the gunk and had a look at it. I couldn't see any place where it was leaking, so I split the sides, the rubber washers were good, so I reassembled them with a bit of anaerobic sealant out side the perimeter of the rubber washers as some added assurance. Bled the brakes and everything works. Are there typical places that I sould double check that would leak on this?
  10. The Apple Blossom Inn in Eureka Springs is really nice and reasonably priced, if you are around that way. I have stayed there a couple times. The Cliffhouse is a very good place to eat, if they have their blackberry cobbler, spend the money, even if you are so full a "wafer thin mint" will make you explode. Really, its that good. Also in Eureka Springs, there is a really good restaurant just down the road that looks kinda like an over sized log cabin, and has an AWESOME breakfast buffet, for about $6. I am not terribly familiar with that part of AR, I just follow the guys that are. The Pig trail is nice, and there are a lot of out of the way roads that are just awe inspiring. If anyone is interested, I will try and get a hold of my friends and see about getting a line on some of those really good roads.
  11. Snaggletooth, what kind of tank treatment did you use?
  12. correct me if I am wrong, but the oil pressure comes from pushing oil through the tight clearances in the engine. The .001" or there abouts in the bearings and cam caps and such. When the bearings start to wear out, you get low pressure problems, which doesn't mean there isn't any oil getting there, just that it doesn't have as small an "orifice" to push through. If a filter had enough resistance in the media to cause the pressure to drop at the bearings, that is a bad filter. Even at that, the bypass valve in the filter should open in the event it gets plugged to this point to allow oil to flow, but it has been my experience that if the bypass opens, you got bigger troubles than just the filter plugged with gunk. Just my humble, but accurate , opinion.
  13. If the tank isn't all rusted out, I would be willing to work a deal. I didn't realize new panels are still available! This may be nice, some of the ones on eBay go for more than $50 and they are busted up.
  14. Randy, that looks really cool. You can come on over any time and start working on mine. hehe. Seriously, I was thinking of doing something like that. Only thing is, I need the panel that your part drops into as well. I can maybe get the left to work, but the right is in about 15 pieces.
  15. The panels, not the pockets, but the part with the speakers, are so old and sun baked that they are literally falling apart. Most of the ones I see on ebay are broken as well, and very pricey. I suppose its like any other part, I just have to wait for the right one at the right price to come along. I hate waiting though.
  16. I know how you feel. June 13th I got rear ended at a stop by a texting kid doing 60+ mph. He threw my 320 lb rag doll body 130 some feet. I was doing everything right, full on defensive driving, and then I see sky, ground, bike sliding, blue car with tires screeching, and feel the bones break. I totaled that car, and spent about a month in the hospital and rehab centers. I have yet to return to work, although I am walking again now, and getting around better. Beginning of the the month the doc said I could do what I felt comfortable with as long as it didn't hurt. Well, while I was down, bunch of the guys at XS11.com rebuilt my 81SH, and she had never looked better. When, well actually a few times before , my wife released me to, I got back on the horse I fell from. The first ride was more about nerves than anything. I was compulsively checking the mirrors, and kept hearing screeching tires behind me. No joke. It took quite a while to settle down after that first ride. The other day I had to go to Wichita to help a buddy with his truck and another buddy with his XS, and decided to take the scoot. I messed around too long and it got dark. Night on highway 96, where 80mph is the slow lane was quite daunting, to say the least. The more I ride though, the more confidence I get. I also am MUCH more aware of what is going on around me. The memory of the pain will never go away, but I hope to not let it rule my life.
  17. Well, I am getting back to the Venture, and finding more and more problems as I go along. Are the fuel tanks interchangeable among all the first gens? I guess if you weld a tank and then smear JB weld all over it, and use cheap paint, it'll last long enough to get it out of your hair. Are there any solutions to the dash panels, other than more broken ones off ebay? Has anyone successfully fabricated something that will work in lieu of the panels? If so, can I see some pics? Is it within the realm of possibility to graft a radio into a non-Royale Venture? Other than that, I am almost done giving it the "Krylon Touch" (Rustoleum to be honest) which has turned out surprisingly nice. I still need to sort the carbs. I have been through them but get big puffs of black smoke at full throttle, maybe I have some jets in the wrong place. Starting to get excited about it again.
  18. A bunch of us at XS11 haved started running the Shinkos, and have had decent success. They are a good all around tire, and have medium wear characteristics. But for less than $100 shipped per pair (on the xs11) buying two sets a year isn't all that bad. Unless the commander in chief's chinese tire embargo has taken them out of the market, I will run them again.
  19. I have been trying for five frikken years to get them to put my ex away. She owes me over $30,000 in child support and has paid about $250 over the past five years. Then she expects me to transport the kids for visitation, and use my money for gas. Every time I lay eyes on her, she is asking me for money. For a while she was telling places she runs up bills with that she lives at my current residence, so I was getting collection calls for her. After a long drawn out conversation with one of the guys, I told him to send me her info if he finds her, cause I have first lien status from child support, and they quit calling. It all started because she knowingly left my kids with a child molesting bastard while she went out cheating on me. Somehow that was all my fault. Since she lied to the judge saying that I forced her to take my kids to that jackass, I have done everything I can to make her life hell. It gets to be satisfying seeing her squirm after while.
  20. They need to put ape hangers on those Spyders. Then they might be cool.

    Road Rage

The bad part about that situation is the shooter was not of sound mind. There was no doubt she would have ended up shooting someone at some point. Its too bad someone couldn't get her the help she needed before it was too late. In june I was rearended by some punk while I was sitting at an intersection waiting to turn. Hit at 60 mph, and he got a ticket for following too closely, while I got a busted pelvis in two places, a broken back and a screwed up XS11. After this incident, I have decided that if at all possible, I will ride away. Anything to stay out of trouble, and avoid getting hit, or shot.
  22. The only thing I found offensive about that was the fact that it is country music.
  23. I have had all sorts of things appear in the road while riding my scoot. The most vicious thing I have found are tom turkeys, especially around mating time. They seem to think they are the biggest thing around and will come at you on a scoot. Dogs are always a problem around here, since I live in an addition outside the municipality. Some of them chase some don't. From what I can tell, the ones that chase actually do want to catch you. I think it was mere chance that the one you hit actually achieved its goal. Its too bad really when a person's pet gets clipped. I once had to put down a neighbor's dog, it seems it liked to go after my kids and try to chomp on their neck. The neighbor wouldn't do anything about it, and it eventually came after me. I struggled in my mind knowing it was the neighbor kids' pet and they loved him. Ultimately though, I believe human life is more important than animal life. Especially when its my kids.
  24. I used one from eBay that was from a Yamaha blaster or some similar ATV, it was the exact same solenoid and cost about $15. Just look around.
