Yeah, I think that is why I lost my focus. Maybe cold weather will help...?

    Inspiration

Been gone from the site for a while, computer crapped out on me and I have been busy busy busy. I haven't gotten very far on the 84, and she is sitting all dejected, and lonesome. The ol XS is running strong and it is hard to get in the restoring mood during the good weather and such. I guess I need inspiration, you guys got any for sale?
  3. Do I have to worry about the YICS when synching the carbs? I looked at the tech tip and it didn't say anything about it. On the XJ11 there is a special plug that seals it off.
  4. They're all a bunch of right wing liberal communist conservatives.
  5. Silicone and gasoline don't play well together. Not sure how much gasoline will get in teh diaphram area, but I wouldn't trust it. Most people I have heard that repair the diaframs are using "plasti-dip" spray. Also liquid electrical tape may be good too. Personally, I think you can mix too much seafoam in. That stuff has acetone in it I think, which is very volitile. Half a can in a tank of my XS and it noticably effects the running. A whole can, and I start thinking about re-jetting. If you have the fuel loaded up with seafoam and Heet (mostly methyl alcohol) you probably have something that is closer to nitormethane than gasoline. While it may run well in a top fuel dragster, not so much in a normal engine. Also, the extra detergents can start knocking loose stuff from the tank and lines. HEET is not good to rubber. The alcohol dries it out in very short order. You may just have crud in the idle jets. You say the plugs are running hot, which tells me you aren't seeing a lot of black sooty deposits, is that right? This would go along with either theory. Crack your drain screws and let a carb drain into a white plastic cup and look for gunk. Also, there are two rubber plugs in each bowl, Heet would probably do them in pretty quickly. These bikes were made before the government started loading up the fuel with alchol, so they really aren't set up for it. Maybe the ones after 1990 would be, but the first years of them definitely wouldn't be Next thought. You say a mechanic cleaned the carbs. Are you 100% sure he got the jets all in the right places? There are three (IIRC) jets that are the same but different sized for each carb. Not installing them in the right places would cause all kinds of havoc. Just the first few thoughts that came off the top of my head. Hope it helps you some how.
  6. Did you see the comment about the homebrew ice studs?
  7. The sad part is all the nude beaches in France and Tahiti are vacant.....
  8. yeah it definitely said a 6 speed. Maybe he counts neutral?

Almost makes the two pictures worth it. I wish I had an aftermarket chrome radiator cover like that one.
  10. The problem with the Mighty Vac system of bleeding brakes is that Mighty Vacs pull bubbles from some other dimension, kinda like the Zero Point Module on Stargate Atlantis. The point is that you will never get a perfect bleed with the Mighty Vac. They are GREAT for moving lots of fluid fast or up hill though. But you must ALWAYS finish with the standard procedure of open-stomp-close-relax. to get all the bubbles out.
  11. My dad lives in Aniak AK, and the eruption has most of the flying around southern AK shut down. Lots of villages are starting to wonder if they will get food and supplies in time from what he says. For several days Anchorage was shut down and that's where most everything in southern Alaska comes through. Most of the rivers won't break until around may, so getting barges in is not an option right now, but it has been a warm spring and the rivers aren't really safe to drive on. When it is cold enough they blade the ice smooth and use them like highways.
  12. After painting the side panels yesterday, and not sanding them down to bare plastic, I think it worked ok. I was worried that the paint would bubble like Oldseadog had happen. Fortunately it didn't. I am so happy. It is going to take a lot of blue to cover the maroon color though. hehe
  13. The one is the video is ultralight category, no license required. No training requirements (if you don't care about living through it) and with a prespun rotor, autogyros can usually take off in about 30 feet. Most of them can land with a zero roll out, with judicious power control, braking and lots of practice. FWIW, the only thing that "flying motorcycle" has a patent on is the main landing gear setup. It is "supposed to" withstand an engine out landing with no frame damage. Most autogyros will do an engine out landing safely but the frame most often takes damage, especially if airspeed hasn't been maintained for a proper flare before touchdown. That is what the landing gear design on that thing is supposed to prevent. Other than that, it is a standard "Benson" type autogyro. Oh, BTW, I want one too. Probably would go for something like this: http://taggart.glg.msu.edu/gyro/gbee.htm Before spending $25k on a kit for the same thing.
  14. Anyone have experiance with the device I see every so often that is supposed to fit in the spark plug hole and air up the tire using the pressure from one of your cylinders while the bike is idling? Personally filing a tire with fuel air mix doesn't seem like that great of an idea. Maybe they work in some other manner? Anyhoot, that HF pump looks real nifty. Durable enough to withstand riding around in a saddle bag for a while.
  15. Lacquer thinner. Hmmm. I tried mineral spirits, but not lacquer thinner. I am guessing the original factory paint was lacquer then?
  16. My father moonlighted as a small town LEO for some time during the winters, which were the off season for his aerial spraying business. He got to take the full on police training at the regional LEO training center. He still tells stories about the driving classes. They taught him several "tricks" to get the average driver to screw up so they can be pulled over. All the wisdom I can glean from him says that it is never illegal to slow down, or stop if need be. Anymore, that is usually what I do. Even on the scoot. If it does end up being a road rager, I bet I am better off on my feet than on two wheels if it comes to that. I think your response was appropriate. He probably pulled you over since it might be "odd" to see some one riding a scoot at two in the am. Probably just checking you out, etc.
  17. Check here: http://beaversdenleather.net/ She carries the Kuryakyn stuff, and I have met her. She won't screw you around, although her personality is kinda "upbeat" so she might make some jokes. I bought a leather jacket from her and she was demonstrating the map pocket and she stuck her hand in it and pinched my gut... Made me jump and she laughed at me..... That kind of behavior makes us grumpy silent types really uncomfortable. Anyway, if something don't work, I can act as a personal liaison. Don't know what to do about the failed transaction though. Hopefully you can dispute the payment. Sounds like one of those places that just takes orders for a warehouse....
  18. My wife bought me a palm sander from Craftsman for my birthday. It runs something like 10K RPM. 40 grit on that thing would disintegrate the fairing in seconds. I tried using some 120, and it works ok, but makes my hand hurt and ache in about three minutes. It is way more than what a DA sander driven by air is. Heavy too. Probably great for sanding wood projects like tables and such though. Since the chili I cook has home roasted herbs for the seasonings and chipotle peppers, and I believe that food should be flavorful and not painful , I guess I'll have to sand..... I am using Rustoleum metallic blue. So far I have just had to knock off the oxidization which isn't bad. My latest piece of plastic is maroon though. The paint is so nice on it it is tough (in a sad way) to strip it. But I don't want a half colored bike.
  19. Wouldn't that be entrapment? Being forced to break a law, then ticketed for it? If it was a Wing, the police obviously searched it because he just wanted to check out the bike. Kinda the same way you always get searched when driving a Ferrari. "Sorry sir, but I am going to have to drive this car to make sure your speedo is accurate."
  20. Is there any chemical that will strip the paint off these old plastics and not harm the plastic its self? If not, I have years of sanding to do.....
  21. I don't think the deflector is the right idea. Maybe some low pressure throttle body type injectors would be the way to go, instead of the high pressure ones. The old Chebby TBI injectors ran at 9-13 psi and kinda slobbered fuel in the throat. High pressure does great things for atomiazation, but blasting it at the other side of the carb probably won't work, like Squeeze said. The lower pressure might be the way to go, since the airflow could sweep the fuel away before it hit the other side of the carb. If you think about it though, the stick carb slobbers fuel across one side of the carb.....
  22. Interesting. There have been more and more lawsuits coming from taze happy LEOs that think it is ok to taze anyone that even speak up. Argument is not illegal in the US, and shooting someone for that is more than likely illegal. Pretty obvious you are the same kind of power hungry badge boy I have come across several times. I hope we meet some time so you can taze me for out witting you. Or better yet shoot me because I irritate you. Very professional, and proves my point as well. Oh, and I really would love that, I have six kids that will be needing colledge educations soon.
  23. Ok, I have probably had more speeding tickets than anyone on this board. When I was 22 in Nebraska the lady at the DMV said I had more points on my license than anyone she had ever heard of. I walked for nearly four years due to speeding. Now, I am extremely perturbed by LEOs that think they have a choice as to whether or not someone needs a ticket. In the US, you are part of the executive branch of the government and not the judicial. If they see an infraction, or other law being broken they should write the ticket and let the judge decide wether it is justified. Doing otherwise is a form of maritial law (judge, jury, and executioner all in one) Holding someone on the side of the road for a half hour without writing a ticket would have me screaming involuntary detainment, which I believe is a felony in Nebraska where I grew up. I bared the brunt a few "lectures" which lasted much longer than necessary and got tickets as well on those occasions, because I am a hot head. A couple of those LEOs got reprimanded and nearly lost their job because writing a ticket shouldn't take an hour and a half. I also disarmed an officer who thought it would be neat to stick his Glock in my face before he even said anything, and later explained he pulled me over "because he knew it was me". Flexing your muscle just because you have a badge is nothing other than wrong. The way I see it pulling someone over and not writing them a ticket deprives them of what we in the great USA like to call "due process". It is nothing short of harassment. If you aren't going to write a ticket, there are written warnings, which at least document your presence. Giving "verbal warnings" usually indicates (speaking from long hours of arguing with LEOs in courtrooms here) you probably shouldn't have pulled them over because you don't have evidence, or maybe even a valid reason. Personally, I love it when LEOs try to play judge. I like to say things like "Ok, you give me a verbal warning and I will call the REAL police." or "Yes I know why you are going to write me for 57 when you had me clocked at 67. You can't work fractions." or "Skin that smoke wagon and you'll eat it." and "You may have a bullet proof vest, but I have an idiot proof shirt. In the end, I will win." Funny how LEOs seem to think it is a crime to jerk them around, but they think its OK for them to jerk the citizen around. Why can't LEOs be professional? Rant over....back to your regularly scheduled programming....
  24. You should give him a pass. Wrapping a V-Twin up that tight will surely lead to vibrations that will make him sterile.
  25. I would bet you have a problem with back feeding through the primary circuit from the starting circuit somewhere. Take the leads off the primary side. As I understand it one should have power with the switch on, and the other should have a ground when the horn button is pushed. On that wire, put your test light on and see if it lights up when you hit the starter button. Also, some relays are made so the power from the secondary positive is also the power to the primary, and the terminal that activates it is a ground. If you have a relay with less than 5 terminals, I would suspect this to be that kind. If you have power to the secondary side from the start circuit, this could explain the problem.
