goodbye rk mufflers 4ever??
Seaking replied to kyle's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Not sure if it's a bad url but couldn't bring that link up to see those pipes.. ? -
Those are #1 Phillips instead of the standard #2 Phillips. Oddly enough, if your screws are in good enough shape the #2 in your bike's tool kit will fit. It is possible that you have crud built up inside the tool slots preventing you from getting a proper purchase to the screw.. That almost sounded indecent no?

goodbye rk mufflers 4ever??
Seaking replied to kyle's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
My Screaming Eagles are tame in loudness but rich in throatiness, however when I want to be naughty then I toss on the Larossa pipes and toss in some ear plugs.. now THOSE will break windows.. heheh -
Personally, the extra coins spent getting someone 'experienced' at changing MC tires is worth the peace of mind afterwards.. Nothing like roaring down the highway at 80 mph... wondering if you torqued it on tight enough or not.. Know what I mean?

Cold weather pooching radio?
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Well FINALLY got the radio sorted out today.. When ever it's cold out, the radio would play stupid and not function properly, no idea why.. I'd lose the LCD display, radio would cut in and out.. switch channels on it's own (usually to some crappy C&W station).. GAH.. frustrating.. couldn't figure out what they heck!! I could not duplicate it in the warm garage, so tonight I tossed the bike outside in the cold and started troubleshooting it.. and ahh there it is.. the blue dot connector.. HUH oddly enough, if you disconnect this, your radio still plays.. basically on the last setting you had.. Which sort of explains what might have been happening to my radios in the cold on the highway. Last summer whilst having my bike repaired in State College PA, the tech accidentally broke my controller but replaced it with the 2009 show bike's controller.. so hey tres cool eh? But I think there might have been a slight sizing issue or something because when it gets cold under the fairing, things start to act up. So I used a little buck-shee fixing to secure the plug better and now there is no popping or cutting out when banging on the radio or onto the wire bundle.. It might be a little hard to see but basically all I did was wrap a zip tie around each connector end and then loop another pair of zip ties between them and when you tighten the last two, it pulls the connectors together, and prevents the connector from rocking side to side, which was causing the radio issues. of course, the proof is in the pudding so I'll have to be riding in the cold cold again to really make sure this IS the fix.. failing that, then I have to pull the controller apart and make sure the cable did not get yanked and pulled a wire loose or something in there.. Fun -
Three Greens and Cruising
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Yeah figured I got away too clean on that cruise control fix lol.. dang... Went out on a nice LONG ride today and enjoying the cruise control.. then after a while I felt I was sitting crooked, or askew on my seat.. Hmm odd not right feeling.. When I got off the bike for a fueling, that's when I realized WHY it was uncomfortable.. They either DIDN'T installed the seat nuts, or forgot to put them in.. Nice.. Thanks guys.. ya wankers.. Another trip out there on Monday... all the way out to the other side of town.. sigh.. Oh wait.. I'll be on a bike, so who cares.. -
Three Greens and Cruising

I kept pointing to their signs showing off their "Factory Trained Technicians".. It was bad enough they had asked me, "where's this junction box?" "what do I need to pull off to get at it?" ergh.. RSV are not very common bikes for techs to be working on so I have to give them some leeway on that.. Like you said, they did make the effort, a good one. The tech who fixed my fuel system problem last summer in State College PA was a top notch RSV mech.. took HIM 30 mins to discover what two other shops couldn't figure out in 5 days and $3,000 worth of parts (on warranty mind you!).. But he said he works on RSV's all the time and is quite familiar with them.. Lucky for me Sky Doc found him for me.. Fun bikes.. but man, hard to find good mechanics.. hence why boards like this are invaluable.. Thanks to all who helped guide me along THIS last little pooch. -
Finally, my cruise control is working as it should and huh, even better than before. Late last fall, I had the local dealer techs installed braided steel throttle cables and clutch / brake hoses on my Midnight and after that, the cruise control stopped working.. it would simply not engage. Turn it on, green light.. press set, 2nd green light and gently release the throttle and plump... greens flashing and amber flashing and no cruise control.. ergh I took it back to the dealer this afternoon and lo and behold, after two attempts they got it working again. They admitted the books suck as to HOW to install the junction box properly, Goose had even submitted a bit of a how to, what to look for but I couldn't make head or tails of what I was seeing on the bike.. And well neither did the tech.. they tried this and that with the cable and Hmm something wasn't right. the FIX was the 3rd cable coming out of the junction box was binding. The tech who fixed it remembered doing the bike last fall and feels he might have caught the cable when closing up covers and panels etc. Lube and testing shows it works even better than before! SO.. before you get your braided steel cables installed, TEST drive your bike to ensure cruise control works.. And then when you get your bike back, TEST drive your bike again to make sure it work etc as apparently, its common for the cruise control to bunge up after this job.. 2.5 shop hours later, no bill.. Wow, a "DEALERship" did good on it's work.. and apologized for the inconvenience.. Wow, I'm impressed! (BTW, 3rd greens is 5th gear indicator lol) Cheers

Never pet a burning dog.. why touch hot metal.. ride at night, if it glows, then you have issues.. It shouldn't be more than warm to the touch... Funny enough though cuz I just changed mine out the other day.. rode the long and hard, got it into the garage and drained the rear diff.. the housing was stone cold.. mind you it was only 35'F when I was out riding but even the oil was cold..

I have the K&N on mine and I honestly believe there is no problem in using them. They do open up the air through the system (more air more fuel in the ratio, fuel economy will degrade somewhere) However, a properly charged K&N filter will do as good if not better job at keeping your air system clean. Considering that my wealerdealership was going to charge me as much for new OEM filters as were a new set of K&N, I went with the K&N as I have had them on my VStar over several mods and yes, you do notice the increase in the HP and Torque (dyno sheets show the difference as well). Though noticeable difference on the VStar, I can't really say if I notice much of a power difference on the Venture.. Mine's a little peppier than my buddy's 2008, but is that all due to the K&N? Its about the only difference tween the bikes.. What I did find different with the K&N on the VStar and the Venture is that the Venture doesn't need recharging anywhere as often as the VStar does.. good air pod design on the Venture then? To each his own I guess.

risers and throttle cables
Seaking replied to atlm's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I'll have to agree with you.. spend the extra few bucks for the longer cables and they'll save you a ton of aggravation over a long period of time.. no binding no worries.. -
Are all heights RSV the same?
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thanks for the replies guys.. For Goose, here's what I can tell you after reading your response (thanks) I did a measurement from the axle and they are very close.. Both bikes have E3s with different but close enough wear so it wasn't there making the difference. I'm going by memory and don't have specific measurements but here is where the differences are. Remember, both bikes are stock, both have leveling links.. rear shocks close enough in pressure but grey bike has zero in front shocks while the 2008 has 5 psi (as mine does).. The 2008 was rear ended the other year but repaired and we thought, ahh that must be why.. but his 2008 measures fairly close to my 2006 Midnight.. Huh. With the bike on the kick stand, there is a marked difference from the ground up to the under side of the rear fender. (always ensuring the tape dangle perpendicular to the floor) Measuring from the floor up to the trunk key hole there is about 2.5 inch difference Measuring from the ceiling down to the top of the gas tank is also about 2 inches of difference.. but various points of the engine (right side easier to measure) is rather close.. So odd.. We have another buddy with a Midnight who is coming in later to get his carbs synched and we're going to measure up his bike to see which is the standard or if all 4 bikes measure differently lol.. so funny though.. Once I get all 4 bikes in the same place I'll try to get you those measurements.. I don't think there is anything wrong with any of the bikes, just one of those odd things.- 7 replies

hi guys, I installed leveling links on my buddy's bike (I have a lot of friends who happen to ride RSV lol) his bike is a silver 2005 and it sits a lot lower than my 2006 and my other buddy's 2008 RSV. Even after installing the leveling links, it is much lower. I have 30" inseams and keep my rear shock at around 40 psi and when straddling the bike I'm on my balls of my feet, heels are off the floor. But on his bike, I'm flat footed on the floor. I have the Butler seat on mine and all 3 bikes are stock as far as suspension goes.. but the silver bike is that much lower.. Any ideas what might cause that? We tried measuring diff parts of the bike to see where the height difference was and we find that the trunk, read fender bottom, top of tank, top of front fender all have difference measurements.. So odd.

What can I say.. the Motovision headlight bulb blasts out the amber highway light so you don't actually see them shed amber light on anything.. however, the amber lights do not hide the amber turn signals at all.. Though the amber highway lights are not in your face bright, they are however, very noticeable and makes the bike easier to pick up amongst night traffic. Not bad, I'm quite impressed. Over all, a nice effect. We'll see what it's like in the fog later on this spring =)

engine oil light comes on
Seaking replied to aspen60's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I had to put earplugs in to get past the feeling the engine would detonate going up that high.. I couldn't "hear" the rev limiter but could feel it kicking in.. For what ever reason, I couldn't force myself to screech the engine that high.. so ear plugs in and drop the hammer.. then I could do it with full audio, so to speak.. and now I tend to ride high revs when out to have fun.. however, lower revs for fuel economy Fun fun and more fun -
ugh.. UPS.. they taint everything they touch.. Thanks for the info though.. I'll see if I can pick one up next time I cage it to the usa..

engine oil light comes on
Seaking replied to aspen60's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Best thing to do is to repeat the process over and over again until you get used to it and then you won't notice that light coming on. Its all part and parcel of dropping the hammer on this bike.. Scary and unsettling at first, but that's what happens in the engine.. tis all good. You shouldn't be looking down anyway.. -
Geesus, for that price tag I might as well buy myself a table top lift with all the bells and whistles. I finally heard back from the Canadian distributor and come to find that the lift is $625 Canadian plus $200 shipping... that's an $825 lift for the bike.. wow. And we're prolly not even talking taxes yet.. Good thing the CDN $ is closer to PAR with the US $.. it might well be cheaper for me to pick one up in the US next time I happen to be down there.. So who else makes a solid jack for a reasonable price, that readily available in Canada? (never mind Crappy Tire, their jacks have arms that are 1 inch too short for practical use) Disappointed? wow

Uer a funny guy.. lol.. My cruise control still doesn't work.. I'll be cleaning out various switches and such to try and get it going but I'm feeling its the shop who put things together wrong when they installed my braided steel cables last fall.. Chances are they'll admit that it might be their fault and fix it or I may end up paying oodles for someone to spend the time to learn how to do fix it and charge me oodles and oodles.. Or I may just go without Cruise Control until I get into the USA this spring (mine ist ein USA Bike)

Cold weather pooching radio?
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I wonder if Radio Crap would have them in stock or any other auto audio shop.. Did you check with the Crutchfield Canada site? Both sizes? Addendum: Aww crappo.. beautiful but COLD day today and nothing but radio probs.. Its the cold affecting mine but it didn't bother my buddy's radio.. Mine kept switching off, changing channels etc.. and eventually shut off and lost all saved channels.. then just to add insult to injury it came back on with a volume setting of 36.. WOW, now THAT's ear splitting.. Nothing I could could make it work.. However, a jiggle and jangle on the cord coming out of the control unit sorted things out for a bit long enough for me to turn the volume down.. We was doing 70 mph at the time and I didn't want to pull over in 36'F weather just yet lol.. But soon as the radio worked it went back to the usual BS.. Got the bike back into the garage, it warmed up and I cannot duplicate the symptoms.. pulled the bike outside in the 28'F weather and there it is.. screwed up radio.. Though the light comes on the LCD panel on the controller, no LCD symbols show up.. and can't make any inputs or setting changes.. SO strange.. a jingle jangle on the cable, and it works ok for a sec.. It's the cold that's affecting but where how and why.. and how do I fix it?!?!? I honestly do not think it's the controller cable as it's a 2009 controller installed last summer when I was in PA with the fuel problem.. the shop broke mine and graciously replaced it from the 2009 show floor bike.. I'll be checking the grounding cable as suggested and greasing up the connectors but man.. stumped or what eh? BTW, it was a SUPERB ride today none the less.. Installed leveling links on my buddy's bike and he loves it.. wow. Tomorrow I'll be pulling the fairing off and having a look at the cable to see if there are any -
Why don't you enlighten us? lol... Shame that the Metzlers suck on the Venture, the ME880's are absolutely brilliant on VStars and such bikes.. I'm on my second set of E3 on the bike and these are awesome..

Cold weather pooching radio?
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thanks KB and Goose.. Next time I have the fairing split I'll be doing the connections proper etc.. I had totally forgotten to do those before buttoning it up again.. However I have to say that the radio has been spot on since that initial day when it was very cold.. down to 32'F ambient.. But these last two days, albeit just a tad warmer, the radio has been rock solid.. go figure. However, I will be doing the connectors as prescribed.. Thanks all -
Hi guys, after a long day's ride I got home and started to dust off the bike (a lot of dust kicking up around here from the high winds...) And I discovered one of my Firesticks antennas was almost all coming loose from it's mount. I guess it would have take another 2 turns or less for it to come completely off.. (right side, CB?) Now I reaaaaally don't want to put much of a wrench on it to tighten it up more because I already killed a Firestick last year when I applied too much ape to the torque and killed it.. Would putting blue loktite in there cause any interference? Ugh I can just imagine one of these flying off the bike and nailing the rider behind me.. ouch.. Thoughts, ideas? I had originally thought to getting large enough black heat shrink and holding them with that.. the idea was to hide all the chrome back there..

Ground strap? Never even thought of THAT.. of all the wiring issues this previously owned bike has gone through, I suppose I should check it.. What's this mod you refer to? Tell me more.. I had the helmet cam up on the helmet today and radio blaring and you can hear the radio a lot better.. One thing I noticed more with the baffles is that you can hear the thud thud or tap tap of the percussion better than before.. better quality sound. I'm impressed.
