  1. I found the same with the clearview TALL - Wide windscreen.. horrible highway mileage.. HUGE penalty.. such that I wouldn't do long road trips with it on.. Great for local rides in the cold weather.. but nah.. the medium height windshields where you can see JUST above it is probably best one to get. The wind pops over your head to reduce buffeting and you won't be blinded by junk on the screen at night in the rain.. I have the Buddy Deflectors on my bike, installed where prescribed and wotta difference THOSE make for the over all wind up under the glasses.. I don't know what they will be like in the heat but in the cool, they do make quite the difference..
  2. Thanks Ross and Freebird.. My plugs got changed a lot last summer due to those weird fuel issues (fuel filter, fuel pump) and I had pulled them again in the fall and everything really looked normal, not sooty, not white.. Gapping them to the middle of the range is what I normally do.. But as Ross said, yeah, taking the tank all the way off isn't all that hard (even when full of fuel) and makes for an easier work space area.. I need to get the blade gapper instead of the wire one I currently use.. I know it's not much of a difference but I found in the past that layering the right amount of blades to slide in the gap and pressing the plug down onto it made for a more even gapping between plugs that the slipping of a wire through the gap.. a little too tight, little too loose, wearing out of the wire.. Or am I being just wee tad too fastidious with my plug gapping?
  3. I'll have to give that a try next as I want to change my plugs out before the next riding season.. Seeing how the chart calls for spark plug changes at every 4,000 miles, does using Iridium Spark Plugs actually make a difference, if not in performance but in change periodicity? Seeing how I put 33,500 miles on the bike last year, that's a lot of oil changes and a lot of spark plug changes.. wow.. I didn't realize till now I might have actually been slack on some of this periodic maintenance..
  4. So you haven't changed your fuel filter yet? hehehe... once you changed your fuel filter, you'll appreciate how easy it was to change your plugs.. =) Which reminds me, I have to do mine soon.. grrr What is the proper periodicity to change plugs on this bike? Do Iridiums really last long to make it worth the while? Having put 33,500 miles on the bike last year, that's a lot of oil changes!! I think I changed the plugs 3 times last summer, on spec, they aren't expensive..
  5. I know what you mean.. I had never heard that sound before from anyone's bike.. but his does it every time.. impressive =0
  6. Well wasn't THAT interesting.. we were working on a friend's Venture this evening and when I closed his right side bag, we heard a hiss of air, almost like a 'sigh' that lasted 2.5 seconds.. No joke.. Could it be air leaking out of the shock as I pressed down on the lid to close the side bag?? After a closer look, we discovered it was air escaping from the side bag.. It was So pronounced and loud to be noticeable.. SO very odd. I checked my buddy's bike and his also made a similar sound but of very much shorter duration.. I tried mine when I got home and nothing.. On the first bike we found the air escape from the drain vents under the bag.. Go figure.. Talk about a tight seal at the lid!
  7. Many thanks M8!!!
  8. hey Monty, any word on a Canadian distributor?
  9. leveling Links! Don't forget those! Inexpensive and easy to install..
  10. Yer gonna love that clutch.. it's a lot stiffer to pull than stock but I don't notice it anymore.. my left arm now matches my right arm.. Prolly more info than anyone needed to know? The point is, some people find the extra pressure hard to deal with but you'll get used to it..
  11. Many thanks.. so you're saying that if time is of a concern, just do the Tail of the Dragon and not the BPR or Skyline?.. Could save those last two for another year Cheers
  12. Nice, I have the same one but will be installing it on the right hand side of the bike.. If you're stopped in traffic, you have the clutch engaged.. if you're traveling down the highway you have cruise control engaged.. if you're in the middle of busy traffic, you should have two hands on the bars anyway.. ; ) No snow here.. but 110 kph winds and 60 mm rains tonight.. egads!!!
  13. ugh. BING maps was slow and tedious to use.. got a headache lol.. I couldn't find that Hell Bender route you mentioned.. scary However I did discover that the BRP didn't stop in Roanoke but that it went all the way down to Cheroke as someone had mentioned earlier.. but it seems to go from large road down to a trail? Is this correct? Or is the end of the BRP still a reasonable road to travel on? Remember the old days when you could get a map that would unfold and show everything? and when your eyesight was good enough to actually SEE all that stuff? I think I'm getting the frustration of not being able to see the big picture on a proper scale lol.. By the time I scale the map out for the whole leg of both trails, you don't see it any longer on the digital maps.. and I'm not familiar enough with the geography down there to appreciate where it starts and finishes.. ergh I'm going to have to find another method of plotting this trip..
  14. wow, sounds like quite the fun ride then.. Thanks for the info gents.. it's really hard to get a grasp of the scale of things.. What's the best way from Cherokee to the US129? (found their website now) Many thanks!!
  15. Hi guys, I'd been looking at the maps seeing how we're gonna do this trip of ours this spring.. and James B reminded me of these routes here that I had heard about, and thought I should include on this trip.. We had planned on doing the I95 from Maine to Florida but a detour to smell the trees would be worth the while on this trip. However, I do not have any knowledge of these routes.. As far as I can tell, I can jump on the top of the Skyline Drive off of the 340 from the 66 near Front Royal, VA and head south all the way down past I64 onto the Blue Ridge Parkway which seems to break out near Roanoke, near the I81? Then from there, cross over to the I95 again and continue down our intended route.. And somewhere in amongst the Skyline and Blue Ridge is what they call the Dragon's Tail? Not sure where but man, looking at the topo and route maps, I can imagine its on that route somewhere.. wow. If coming in from the north east, down the I95, where's the worth while place to jump onto the Skyline, and pop out of the Blue Ridge back onto the I95, allowing us to take in the view and enjoyable riding. If starting at Front Royal and finishing at the end of the Blue Ridge Parkway, how long is a good estimate of traveling time, being very conservative.. stopping to see the view, gas, food etc? Is it a day trip or several days to do this route? The scale is hard to gather due to the lower speeds and meandering route.. If you have intimate knowledge of this route etc and can lend a hand, I'd muchly appreciate it. We may be emerging from the east or the north, depending whom we're visiting and when kind of deal.. Cheers
  16. Hi Goose, how much time is involved to get this bit of maintenance done? I'll be down your neck of the woods in May/June and would be interested in having you show me how this is done seeing how my 2006 Midnight has over 55.000 miles on it.. Cheers M8
  17. I have that one on my VStar in the garage right now, when I go out to play tonight i do some measurements and see what it might look like.. NOTA: I just went out to have a look and it would appear that the ProOne tach riser will NOT fit on with the Venture. The back of the Tach unit itself will be right inside the cassette player area.. Shame as it would be a neat idea.. Ya never know.. mayhaps someone will come up with something..
  18. Seriously, try the Butler seat mod first.. best price and you'll love it. I have two seats done by Mr Butler.. a pillow seat which I prefer best and the one that came with the midnight bike (non-pillow).. dunno why but I find the pillow one best.. =) I can ride all day and all night.. BEST mod money I'd ever spent on any bike..
  19. Thanks M8.. we're going to be digging into the maps and road logs to see where all of this fun stuff is located and how best to get there =) Cheers
  20. Oooh interested to see where this goes.. Luckily for me I did manage to get my dead shock replaced after visiting you (Doc) last summer.. under warranty in Maine =) and what a difference that made.. but as you said.. it most likely will fail again so a fall back shock plan would be nice..
  21. Thanks M8.. where is this part located? Does the tank have to be removed to access it? I suspect they might have pooched this one on the re-install... if so, I might pay them a visit to 'fix it..'.. Hmm Cheers!
  22. LOL thanks, I'll be looking at it tomorrow / weekend.. I think this was it..
  23. Many thanks!! Nice one..
  24. Has anyone encountered THIS one before? At the end of the season last fall I had my lines and cables switched over to black braided steel which look good, feels good.. However, at the end of the season, I was no longer able to engage cruise control on the bike, either in 5th or 4th no matter what I did.. the lights would cycle through but when you released the throttle it wouldn't engage and then start the lights cycling all over again as if you hit a huge bump that disengaged it.. I have a very deep suspicious feeling that this started due to something the Yammy shop forgot to hook up or broke or pooched somehow. I KNOW it worked before going into the shop but stopped working after I got it back from the shop, but it was a few weeks afterward before I actually tried to use it.. I'll pulling the tank off the bike this week to change plugs, so now is the opportune time to have a look to see if anything is amiss.. Can't ride the bike yet, still winter up here.. but if there is something I can check now, I would certainly appreciate any help forthcoming.. I don't know what to look for at this point.. I'm gonna NEED my Cruise Control for the big trip in May lol Thanks again M8
  25. AHHHhhhh hence the 'more two lane side of the trip part.. ' nice.. I'll have to dig out where what how to get to those from our intended routes.. =) Game!
