several radios from Pinwall for $300? ouch and no returns policy.. ouch.. Me thinks I shall have to do the USA warranty thingy next month.. 2006, 5 yr warranty, I'm good til next year, right? 7 hours to Houlton Maine from here.. Hmmm Man a whole month with no tunes. blech Thanks for the info guys, much appreciated.

Not too long before installing the HID on the bike, my radio had been acting up.. I had thought it was a bad connection on one of the cable plugs etc but the other day, the whole thing went up and died.. Turn the ignition on, press the audio or CB button on the handle bar controller and nothing.. the controller doesn't light up, no juice or crackle or nuttin coming through the speakers. I checks all the cables, wires, ground and so on etc etc.. nothing.. I pulled the radio from my buddy's bike as we were installing his HID and yup, his radio works.. ARGH... logic says, my radio is dead. oh no.. It sounded bad for weeks prior and it finally gave up the ghost the other day.. BLECH... can't even play MP3s as everything goes through that box.. Does any one know what the YELLOW cable does? So, here's the question.. Its a 2006 Midnight Venture. Its a US bike here in Canada. I have no warranty here in Canada but I can get warranty work done in the USA if I am down there and can find a sympathetic dealer to help.. Is the radio a warranty item? If so, then I might be in luck as I'm going on my long road trip through the USA next month and could find a dealer in Maine to do a swap.. only takes 12 minutes to swap it out.. OR... find someone who could help me by doing a swap? if NOT a warranty item, then where best to find a replacement radio? I'm guessing that the previous two owners had done such a bad wiring job under the hood before I bought the bike, I had so many problems with the steering locks cutting everything that it weakened everything and poof... it gave up the ghost. Hoping for some help.. Hard to ride in comfort and fun without the tunes.. =)

HID headlight installed

I dunno what you would do for a RSTD cuz this is he RSV forum? My buddy just installed one on his Kawi Nomad.. And he's impressed with the retina burn lol.. Joking.. Most of his components are out in the breeze so to speak but masked a lot of it by colouring the parts black etc.. -

Hopefully things travel south across the border faster than they do coming north If you need help with the HID install etc, let me know.. I've done a few of them already.. =) Its simply simple to do.. but there is a trick to some of it to make it even easier on you. -

Hi guys, just to drop a line that we installed the same HID I have onto my friend's RSV (link to HID is on first article). And to confirm, NO you cannot have a modulator work on a HID as the previous gent just stated.. it won't work and will cause you problems. We installed the HID on the bike and it wouldn't work properly.. what the? Then we discovered he had a modulator on his headlight wiring system that was disabled as he hated it modulating..) So that had to be cut out of the system, re-solder the wires back and poof, beautiful bright retina burning light.. sweeet.. This time, the install took all but 30 minutes from cowling removal to re-installation of front fairing.. (but take away the puzzler about the modulator lol) Fun stuff.. Even in the day time the cagers will flash their lights at you if you ride with hi beam on.. nice.. The only thing you can't do with this type of single bulb hi lo system is flick the hi lo fast like you would an incandescent bulb, because of the actuator.. But it's a slice installing and bright lights ahead of you.. -
Fuel mileage, stalls

I have that little black box tach, you wrap a wire around one the spark plug leads and set it on mode 1 for dual ignition etc.. If I set my idle at 950 or 1,000 for the synch'ing, it's waaaaay to high for a normal engine idle for the bike.. waay too high.. And yes, you're right.. a proper synch is done on a hot engine.. sucks cause it's hot where you have to pull the plugs and hoses and such lol.. But makes a huge diff. -
aww bollocks.. I thought that after ripping the right fairing off and finding a serviceable fuse there, but a busted mounting bolt attachment nut, that the "backup" fuse might be the culprit and the problem solved...... but to no avail... =( Crap.. Both fuse are good, and swapped out just in case but no radios will come up. So now, where to start next.. I'll have to take the front fairing off and see what I can see under the hood as it were.. perhaps find something 'obvious' there.. ? All this started right after I washed the bike.. Hmm Thanks for the suggestions M8s..

The book says to set idle to 1000 RPM to do your carb synchs... Afterwards to set carbs to proper IDLE... What is the warm engine IDLE rpm setting. not while synching, but everyday engine idle? Weirderships both tell me they do it by ear.. 'what sounds normal'.. ergh.. it's a V4 and neither of the two shops know how to play with this bike.. So I set it where I think it sounds normal, gauge shows roughly 650 rpm.. -
Hmm at MY size, that could take a long time.. lol If it looks bad on removal I'll send pics.. Cheers M8

Best guess here is that the friction plates got royally abused and lose some thickness hence why the clutch travel is soooo minimal.. =/ Parts should be here monday and then we shall see what colour / condition they are in.. Poor bike, I've abused it too much

Oh fer croid's sake.. lol Since the bike is out of action for a coupla days I went and 'washed it' and promptly broke it again.. gremlins do vex me. After washing the bike the radio speakers were crackling.. odd sound, I thought it was just perhaps static because I was bringing the bike into the garage.. But when I turned the bike back on to check something the radio would not come online at all.. no audio/ radio / CB or another.. the controller is stone cold dead.. next please. I'm thinking something got really wet and shorted out.. Does anyone know where the fuse is for the radio?

Thanks all for the assist.. yes, it is indeed 8 friction and 7 steel.. I had called around this morning for parts and such.. there was a fine balance between cost and time line to take into consideration.. SkyDoc was seriously the cheapest for sure but time wise it wasn't my best option, and when you consider the cross border BS we go through all the time, it then gets expensive etc. I had a good buddy of mine set up with a great price from the weinership, and the parts will be here on Monday.. Funny enough I had to insist with the dealership people that yes, 8 and 7 is what I needed.. not 7 and 7 and a wee weird disc.. gees. Once again, thanks to all for their assist..

Thanks Don I couldn't find anything 'barnett' listed for our bikes, just the RoadStar (compatible parts?) I'm all still a bit confused about the removal of the half-disc I did with the PCW spring plate mod.. Does the Barnett kit cover that I wonder? I've been searching tall and wide for a set of clutch plates.. not having much luck..

Hi guys, its been determined that I had most likely 'burnt out' my clutch this past weekend on the advanced rider's course, hence why my clutch travel on the lever is sooo minute, the friction plates have thinned out so much, that's all she wrote.. So I have to replace the friction plates and to hedge against the possibilities of further troubles, I'll be changing the steel plates as well.. and do an oil change.. I probably have 20,000 miles on the PCW kit since I installed it.. and I ride my bike like I stole it.. (in some ways I did I don't know if there any other aftermarket friction plates available for our bike or not, but I also can't find my info as to how many of each plates the clutch takes as I did the PCW mod of removing the half disc etc.. ?? Aftermarket or OEM plates.. Any help or advice would be appreciated..

Well today I took the bike in to have the clutch fluid flushed and bled hoping that this would fix the problem.. Unfortunately, no improvement except cleaner looking fluid in the reservoir =( Dang On top of that, I felt the clutch slip coming back from the shop.. I dropped the hammer to get around a slow moving vehicle and felt that no-acceleration but higher rpm feeling before it finally caught.. I could not duplicate it but it did happen. I have very little clutch lever movement from when you start to feel the clutch engage to full release of the lever.. I mean VERY little, less that the width of your baby finger.. So now I'm wondering. All this started AFTER I did the advanced motorcycle course where you have to ride the clutch for most of the day with high revs, so I'm sure that's what caused the problems I am now having. So now I'm thinking.. Because of the clutch slippage today, I must have glazed the clutch parts.. I know I can rough up the metal plates with course emery cloth to take the shine off, but what about the other part? Could I have actually wore those down enough to thin out the stack? I have the PCW clutch kit in there, is it then possible that I totally weakened the spring plate? I say that out loud because it doesn't take much to pull in the clutch now. Course of action: Flush and Bled= done Do I bother pulling the plates and roughing them up? Do I order a new spring plate? Do I need new plate (not the steels, the other one can't remember if it's the rotor or stator.. Sound advice needed.. I can still ride the bike but it sucks canal water.. =(

No doubt a yearly flush would be a great thing and I did just that late last Nov when I have the hoses changed out, but like I said, I think I burnt the fluid (over heated) on the Advanced Motorcycle Course this past weekend. And it's getting worse.. I have to book an appointment to get it flushed out.. yoikes

I use a similar type which I use for the shocks and in emergency to top up the tires.. it takes a lot of pumping for the tires lol.. There are some pumps out there that read in 10 psi increments which would be safer / better to use but can't find one

throttle cable free play ?

Does anyone find heavy winds affecting their ability to engage cruise control? Mine seems to be having a hard time when the winds are high and especially when gusting.. -
"ideally" you don't want to mix your tires.. you want the front to match the rear.. For my hefty size, I run my front at 40 and rear at 42 but when I know I'm doing nothing but slab riding for a while, I run them 38 front and 40 rear.. its what works for me

E3's last a long long time... a long time.. I do find it a bit noisy when you have a lean on the bike, either due to wind or the road's camber but good handling and lasts a long time. no joke, but I'm up past 20,000 miles on mine with lots of tread left still.. its all about the pressures..

I had a good look at the clutch fluid yesterday.. Both the brake and clutch fluids were changed out last fall when I had the black braided steel cables installed.. The brake fluid is nice and clear while the clutch reservoir fluid is noticeably darker.. Both reservoirs levels are full up in the glass, no air showing there. Mayhaps time to take her in for a flush when the snow melts.. Cheers

Come home with a fake cast on and tell her if was due to lack of Safety Chrome.. You'll either get that sympathy look or that incredulous look of disbelief. I dunno, it's worth the try.. I dechromed and debadged my Midnight Venture that I have a lot of people asking me what year my Harley is.. Sad people out there.. lol
-
YES! That's what it is.. PCW LOL.. thanks for the memory jogger =)
-
Awesome, thanks. I'm still checking to see what that clutch kit I have it called.. but I'm drawing a blank lol.. heavier spring and it does away with the half spring.. Argh, I can't remember what.. (old age, kicks me in the teeth..)
