Need some help identifying an RSTD.
Seaking replied to Condor's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Here's my friends RSTD.. he says it's a 96, one of the very very first, 4 exhaust pipes, leather bags etc.. it's weaker than a 2nd Gen RSV but he says its a blast to ride all the same.. depends what you want to do with it I guess -
Cold weather pooching radio?

Prolly like I said, OEM part for another bike that might use it.. But on the GOOD side of things, been out riding all day long enjoying the tunes on the radio and not one problem.. so yesterdays mishaps with the radio might well have been due to the COLD !! Sweet! -

Just jammed them in there to cover up the speakers.. You see that white bracket, are your front holes 'empty' also? Found it odd to have a mounting hold with no mount or attachment.. Possible that this also fits another bike that does use those front mounts? -

Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
wow, now that's a pretty "installation" compared to mine which are press fitted against the back of the speakers.. Its not "pretty' by any means but it does make a difference.. I had seen your install for the rear speakers but I didn't want to tackle pulling the fronts apart like that.. Though perhaps next time I might.. Hmmm Installed like I have mine, they sound good.. I would imagine installed properly they would sound superb! -

LOL +4 with 20 kph gusting 40 here today.. most snow gone after the other week's hurricane (don't ask, it's been a wild winter).. I did some helmet cam work during the ride.. kinda weird seeing the ice on the cliffs.. Sunday is better, +6 and 10 kph winds.. Ahh yeah.. -
Need help with Lizzard lites
Seaking replied to waterbug's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
"Experimentation" is always the best way =) You're best to have the bags and tank and fairing back on the bike in order to see where you lights would look best.. Behind the air boxes shining onto the engine and under the tank edge as well.. Just for the fun of it, I had Ultraviolet lights on mine this winter to see how it would look.. and then took them off.. neat effect in the dark for sure.. -

237XT40 XTC 4" Speaker Baffles 3-7/8" depth at http://www.crutchfield.ca/ (or .com) They sell a slimmer version as well, which I think might actually fit a lot better but these I think make a better 'cup' behind the speaker, giving it more oomph? I dunno anything about the science of acoustics but I do know that the sound is much better while riding than it was last year.. nice.. -
My First Real Evaluation
Seaking replied to rumboogy's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Welcome to the RSV Wally.. I bought my 2006 used in 2008 as a standby while my beloved 2005 VStar was being overhauled. The Midnight Venture was being sold at a price no one could refuse so I jumped on it and planned to sell it later when my VStar got back on the road later that summer.. Its a big bike compared to the VStar but OMG, what a bike =) One thing you'll want to do is explore the Rev Limiter on this bike.. Once you know where it is within various gears and what to expect and feel when or before you hit the rev limiter, this lazy touring bike become one heck of a bronco.. Wow, some of the lads here urged to to discover my Rev Limiter and rediscover the bike.. WOW.. what a difference it makes. Rick Butler's seat is one heck of an investment towards the enjoyment of this bike.. Thank Rick! You say you have LOWERING LINKS in the rear of your bike?? I hope you mean "leveling" links.. Lowering the rear of your bike will compound the difficulties of handling this top heavy bike. Leveling Links raises the rear of the bike just enough to change the rake and trail of the bike's geometry to now make it so much more easier to handle and such.. If "height" is an issue, then you lower the front of the bike.. there's actually an article on here somewhere about lowering the trees onto the tubes to do somewhat the same thing as leveling links.. The fuel alert system leaves a lot to be desired.. Mine is akin to yours where the warning is so short it may as well just go to reserve right away.. However, you'll get used to pulling in sooner to get fuel and it no longer becomes an issue. I'm one of those people who hates niggling on the highway over whether or not I'll make it to the next fuel stop.. I find it takes away from the enjoyment of riding. Fill up and be happy. Your mileage will differ depending on how you ride, the wind conditions and how fast you're going as well.. How much do I enjoy my RSV? Well my beloved VStar is still waiting to be completed.. I do dust it off once in while when I'm tinkering on the RSV.. (I told the wife I was waiting for special parts to arrive before I can finish putting it back together.. -
My First Real Evaluation

"Leveling Links" will RAISE the rear of the bike up by an inch or so.. Just enough to change the rake and trail of the bike to something more manageable and still be very safe. Its a 30 minute job to install and a life time to enjoy.. if you don't like it or find it too high in the rear, it's another 30 minute job to change them back to OEM.. Please do yourself the favour and at least try them out.. what a difference they make. If the extra height is the major concern for you, it's not that bad. I have a 30 inch inseam and easily manage the bike and even able to put my heels down.. (mind you, I have to try hard).. "do it" -
ergh I'd have to pull the stilettos off to see again.. I think there is some space but not a lot.. I'd seen some people put the old ends on their ISOs but not sure they got to it..

Cold weather pooching radio?
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Hey hey in Sask.. I was in MJ 97-00 This is a replacement controller replaced last summer whilst getting my fuel problem repaired.. I was out in the garage just now changing fluids out of the rear diff and had the radio going, playing this doing the whole ringamarole thing but couldn't make it fail.. gees. Hopefully it'll be sorted with the warmer weather.. =) -
Cold weather riding with a Tall Wide Clearview, Buddy's knee wind deflectors and extra clothing makes for a fun ride.. near 32'F and 0'C today, high winds meh.. gotta get out when the going is good.. All works well but my radio decided to play silly bugger.. Here's what I experienced, and I am hoping it's really only because of the cold.. Riding down the road, the LCD panel would go out and come back on.. flicker.. stay on for a while and go off.. not bump related, not turn related.. just does it at odd times.. then it changed channels on it's own.. and of course its on that type of channel ya just hate to listen to but the controller won't let you change channels.. it's locked in on that one.. argh.. now what? Silence is golden after that. However, I get the bike back into the heated garage and I cannot duplicate the problem.. argh.. Touch and yank and jiggle everything I can reach, bang on this pull on that and nothing.. it works all perfect.. Can't duplicate it in the garage.. On another note, I added speaker baffles behind the speakers recently and wow, I didn't think they would make that much of a difference.. but the sound is richer coming out of the speakers.. more dynamic.. not bad for 8 bucks a pair of foam baffles..

No idea M8.. but I put the stiletto ends on my ISO grips.. I don't think you really need the end weights on the ISO Grips, makes it look odd.. naughty like The stiletto tips are heavy and do add to the vibe dampening.. Good luck

Ride Like a Pro.. on a Venture?
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Funny enough, the Venture was the very first bike I ever owned that I had dropped to the ground. I got high mounted on an uneven roadway and when I put my feet down it was a lot deeper than my legs were long and down went the bike.. ergh.. BUT, one of the first things I ever did when I bought the bike and got it home was to lay down shop mats in the drive way and put the bike down on it's side and attempt to pick it up the way we were trained ages ago (pretty much the same as in the DVD).. and yes, though she's a heavy girl, anyone can pick her up.. (but that doesn't mean she's easy!!) -
how much air pressure for front and rear
Seaking replied to Bwhite's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Its a matter of preference, everyone will have their own prefs on this one.. I tend to do 5 in the front and 40 in the rear, keeps it stiff enough for me for what I like to do.. if I go zero zero I find the bike wallows.. but add some pressure and it tightens the bike up.. -

I had my 2006 Midnight out today and scraped the hell out of the pipes and floor boards by the end of the day lol.. wow.. Ok, the bike DOES want to lean and dip and do everything other bikes do with confidence and authority.. Impressive!! -
New cable no Cruise Control
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I took the bike out for a spirited 'shaking of the cob webs' ride today in brisk cold weather ahhh but that was worth it.. SIGH.. finally on the bike again.. However, the cruise control still did not work.. I know how to access the internal set up of the wheels and such but not how to put it together properly, there are such many different ways.. Ideally I will have to take the bike back to them and have them fix it back up properly, the right away since they're the ones who pooched it in the first place.. sigh.. Shame, I thought I had it fixed.. -
New cable no Cruise Control
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
A photo is worth 1,000 words and with the first pic and what goose explained I think I found the problem however, a test ride will say more.. when I opened the case, the cable coming out of the case out of the bottom was all loose and actually looped away from the wheel.. when I turned the throttle I could see that cable moving when the case was open nor hear it when the case was closed. All I could figure out to do was lift the top most wheel and rotate it clockwise (looking down at it as in the photo) which then took up the slack on the single cable.. When the case was closed, then I could hear that cable move when moving the throttle.. I think this is the fix and can see how an inexperienced mech could pooch it.. however, if this is not the fix then I shall book some shop time with them until they fix it.. warranty or no warranty.. thanks all.. much appreciated. Goose, I couldn't see those markings to described though.. bad eyesight on my part perhaps.. -
Ride Like a Pro.. on a Venture?
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
As they say in the airforce, you have to know your limits and then pull it back in a bit from there.. I've no probs dropping the bike in the parking lot, the bike locks up in a turn as if it comes to a dead stop with the wheel cocked over and I go for a tumble if it's abrupt enough.. The engine and bag guards are doing their jobs, albeit too much but it's trying to get that dip and oomph doing that's hard to figure out.. Once I get on the course next month I'll be able to sort it out.. -
Windshield HEIGHT advice
Seaking replied to ablumny's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I almost have to stand up to see over my tall-wide clearview windscreen.. Around here we have a lot misting rain and if you don't like getting wet riding, you'll never get out riding.. But that type of rain doesn't blow off the windscreen, it sticks and makes it very difficult to see.. hence why I really don't ride with mine too much to be honest.. a little wind in the face to be able to see properly.. Mind you, my 2 inch windscreen is fun to ride with as well hehe -
Prolly just an old throw back from my air force mechanical days.. "precision" on antiquated equipement Thanks for the info!

Ride Like a Pro.. on a Venture?
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Good comments by all.. "Practice" seems to be the key word here.. and I practice a lot. I spoke with one of the chief instructors here and he offered me some one on one time this spring to over come this little 'fear' factor.. He said he knows what I'm referring to and has a fix for it.. (big sticks, electric shock?) I just finished watching the Deal's Gap DVD and wow.. I can hardly wait to try that road up, even with a bit of apprehension.. i did have one major exception about something they did on the video, though.. One segment they boast up the guy on the big yellow Goldwing and how he's chasing down these two sports bikes who end up riding above their skill levels and could potentially crash or cause a crash. He's "pushing" from behind, pulling their buttons to not let the touring bike pass, thus the idiots on the sports bike race forward to prevent the yellow bike from passing.. or try to. The narrator as so much says the same thing.. However, the yellow bike rider would be in as much as to blame should one of the sports bike riders had gone down.. They acknowledged that he was pushing to pass them and knew they wouldn't let him pass.. which now turned into a very dangerous game of cat and mouse.. basically seeing if he could push them hard enough to crash on their own.. see where I'm going with this? Its the only section of the video that soured me.. they could have narrated it differently with the same footage but meh.. I didn't care for it.. I drive / ride all the time and encounter such idiots who won't 'step aside' for a faster vehicle (mah and paw kettle in the sunday drive car on the back roads doing 30 under the posted speed limit...) Instead of cramming onto their tail and pushing from behind, it's always best to pull over and wait a while... or submit to the bovine state of mind of numbness being them.. better than than risk pushing them into an accident, or yourself.. Anyway.. that's just me.. your opinion or mileage may most likely differ.. -
Hi guys, I just finished watching the Ride like a Pro DVD (soon to watch the Deal's Gap DVD =) And yeah, interesting concepts and a lot of what I already know but to watch them do it, the verbal reinforcement helps as well.. "However".. They're using lower centre of gravity Harleys with better low end grunt on them which must make it much easier to do the dips and turns etc. The ONE issue I have with my bike when doing the advance maneuvers is that I honestly feel the bike will fold up on itself with the steering locked in tight and causing the bike to drop.. Though they say "rear brake and power" will stand the bike up, I always feel like it's going to force the forks over hard and lock it up causing the fall.. you know what I mean? Then I see in their video later on where they say "these techniques work for all kinds of bikes" and show the various bike.. Yeah, nice Harleys, dipping down deep scrapping their boards blah blah.. then a Goldwing.. then a Valkyrie and then.. A 2nd Gen Venture dipping down hard and over negotiating a proper dip and turn.. HUH! My bike is tuned up properly.. Lowering links, risers, even pressure in the forks, good shock in the rear and newish tires, proper inflation but yet when I do those turns, I really feel like I'm going to lock it up to the inside of the turn and drop the bike.. I know it would be hard to point out what's what without seeing or being there, what's the trick with our type of bike? A month or so before we can get our bikes out around here.. I really want to hone up the skills for this season.. I can do all those exercises on a VStar, but still struggling with the sharper turns on the Venture.. (paraphrasing a quote from the video: After 20 years of riding a motorcycle, I thought I had 20 years of experience riding a motorcycle but in reality all I had was one year of riding experience repeated 20 times, doing the same mistakes over and over again, until I learned how to ride a motorcycle properly.. ) Makes sense..
