There is a forum just for that discussion. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=106

Let's keep the discussion civil folks. I think that pointing out the article is a good thing. It's good for people to read opinions from the manufacturers but let's keep it nice.
-
That's interesting. I've read that you should NOT feed them sugar and water but only the hummingbird mix. Don't remember where I read it but the article said that sugar and water doesn't have the vitamins and etc. that they need. For that reason, I've always bought the mix. I'll have to look into that and reconsider.

What I see shows a 60% chance of rain on Friday but only a 20% chance on Saturday. I typically don't allow rain on Maintenance Day but if there is some sort of mixup, we'll do the best we can. I have a garage that we can work in and also a large greenhouse that we can work in. We can still get a lot done.

I knew that SOMEBODY would remember that. I should have known it would be YOU.
-
Well...since it IS a first gen...how about something representative of the age.
-
I agree, there have been no changes. They should work on all years of the second gen from '99 to present.

Naw...you can still come. We'll just talk REALLY slow.

I hope she does come. It would be nice to finally meet her. We won't say anything to get you in trouble...we would NEVER do that.

WOW...talk about mixed feelings. I started riding when I was about 14 and I sure earned my share of battle marks during those early years. No training at all, just jumped on a bike, figured out what to push to make it go and was a terror for many years after that. Dylan is 19 now. I've bought a few small bikes for him to put around the yard on when he was younger but he never had any real interest. He had a CT70, a CT90, a Honda Bearcat and etc. but just never rode them over a half dozen times or so. Last week he told me that he has decided that he wants a bike. I think that some of his co-workers ride and he wants to join them. I feel very hypocritical about it all. I absolutely do NOT want him to get a bike but I sure understand the attraction. It has brought me much joy over the years. So, what do you do? I told him the truth about how I feel about it. That I really don't want him buying a bike but that I knew I had no basis to tell him no. I told him that I would insist though that he take the MSF safety course and that he NOT start out on a crotch rocket. I am steering him towards a 650 or so cruiser like maybe a VStar or a Honda Shadow. Due to his lack of interest in the past, I never thought I would have to face this day but here it is.

Those temperatures would be great. Don't worry about the rain forecasts though. We need some rain but I don't allow it on Maintenance Day. Just one of my few rules.

OK, those of you who have been to my Maintenance Day are fairly familiar with all of this but for those who haven't been before, here is a bit of info for you. 1. There is a Super Walmart and an Autozone about 3 miles from my house. Handy for any miscellaneous items that you need to pick up but if you need any specific motorcycle related parts, you probably should bring them with you. 2. I have a decent assortment of tools, a couple of air compressors, oil drain pans and etc. I also have a couple of bike lifts handy. If you want to bring some tools though, it is not a bad idea. 3. I have a lunch catered on Saturday. Usually around 12:00 to 1:00. It costs me quite a bit of money to do this so there is always a donation can out for you to help if you can. It is NOT mandatory. I would not want anybody to not come or not eat because their money is tight. If you can help, that is great. Nobody is watching to see who donates and who doesn't though. 4. There will be a portable toilet available. There are no hard and fast rules but it is asked that the men use the portable toilet and let the ladies use the bathrooms in the house. 5. We will have a few prizes to raffle off. Not a lot but a few items. Eusa has generously donated another set of his diamond cut Second Gen engine fins. Baggershield has agreed to donate one of their windshields. It hasn't gotten here yet but hopefully it will this week. I have new set of speakers that should work in a first or second gen. Eileen has picked up a few items for the ladies. Maybe a few other odds and ends. Tickets usually sell for $1.00 each. 6. There will be tickets available for the trailer raffle at the International Rally in N.Y. Will be a great time to pick up some tickets if you haven't already done so. Registration for the International will also be available. 7. This is a true maintenance day. We will start tinkering with the bikes whenever people are up and about on Saturday morning. Please don't come and expect others to do everything for you. There are some great folks around to help you out but not DO for you. Be prepared to get your hands dirty if you want something done to your bike. 8. We sometimes try to take a little ride on Saturday evening so normally try to wrap up the bike work no later than 4:00. The ride sometimes doesn't happen because people are often exhausted and just want to chill out in the evening. So if you don't want to go on a ride, please don't feel obligated to do so. 9. The Saturday lunch is the only meal provided. You are on your own for breakfast and probably dinner. There are usually some leftovers from lunch though if you want another snack later in the day. If you come in on Friday, we will be riding over to Quaker Steak and Lube for dinner. 10. We will have a great pinstriper available on Friday. I'm not sure if he will be here on Saturday or not but he is usually around both days. 11. We do have a hot tub and you are more than welcome to use it BUT....swimsuits are mandatory...I mean...at least for the men. 12. There is a combination gas/charcoal grill on the back deck. You are welcome to use it. 13. I always have a big urn of coffee set up in the garage. If you are the first one up and about, please turn it on. It will be ready to go. I'm sure that I'm missing something and those who have attended before are welcome to add to this. 14. Bring your own TP,,at least 2 rolls,,,,,, now who would have stuck that comment in here? Eileen and I love doing this and are looking forward to seeing all our old friends and making some new ones.

I'm sure that she would never find out. But Dan, what is her email address in case we want to send her a message and let her know that...uh....that you ...uh....didn't post the picture...yea...that's what we would tell her.
-
That would be great. I tell you though, I just came in from doing some more trimming and it is already 86 here at 11:20. Maybe we'll get a break though.
-
LOL...I don't know why anybody would want to replace one but if they did, I'll bet there are plenty of them around here from those who have removed them.

Valve adjustments are really too big a job as they take several hours. I'm a little worried this year about taking on any large jobs because some of the guys who jump in and work the hardest are unable to attend this year. Squidly and Goose are a couple that won't be here. Goose did a seminar a couple of years ago on the valve adjustments and it was very good. I'm using running around like crazy and just don't have time to concentrate on one job. Now if somebody volunteers to help with it then that's fine with me. We usually did a seminar on Friday but have nothing planned for this year. It's going to be hot and I plan to TRY and relax a bit and hopefully nobody will be worked to death this year.
-
Unfortunately, they will not be here this year. They had planned to come but the date conflicted with a previously scheduled commitment.
-
Shouldn't be anything to do expect swap it out. Everything is setup correctly when you get it. Just install, fill with oil and go.
-
Well, I got started around 6:30 this morning. Started cleaning the garage and got it in fair shape and then got back on the weedeater. Did about 3 more hours on it and I am completely beat now. That old man showed up again. I'm getting a little fed up with him showing up unannounced.
-
That's a real possibility. In case you don't know it Wes, the drive shaft will slide in right beside the U-joint instead of in it like it should. Maybe it being so easy to stab on the first try was not a good thing.
-
Wes, It's not hard to get the wheel back into place but there is a simple trick that makes it very easy. Put the axle in. Then that holds it up while you align it and push it in. Then it will stay in place and you can pull the axle back out to get the spacers, caliper bracket and etc. installed.
-
Now you're just rubbing it in. I sure wish we could have joined you. It was a great day for a ride.

The strangest thing happened to me today. We are in full throttle mode getting everything ready for maintenance day. Now if it was up to me, I would say "yea, things look good enough". BUT....SHE WHO MUST BE OBEYED comes up with these HUGE lists of things that just MUST be done before people start arriving. So..... Today I spent about 5 hours on the weedeater. Now I use a 4 stroke Toro weedeater and it IS a little heavy but I swear it gets heavier every year. So I trimmed for about 5 hours and this thing just beat me to death. Now this is the first time I've used it this year but I've used it many times in the past. I just don't remember it beating me up so bad. So I finally got finished with most of the trimming and was surprised at how tired I was. I went in the house, had a big glass of ice water and then went up to take a shower. It was then that I realized what had happened. I glanced in the mirror and there was an old geezer in there. I don't know where the heck he came from but it about scared me to death. How the heck did he get in my mirror?????? I got over the initial shock and got in the shower. When I was finished and had gotten dressed again, I gathered up my courage and took another look in that mirror and the old fart was gone. Now it still wasn't no youngster staring back at me but things were a little better. The only thing is, that old fart left some aches and pains when he left. What's up with that?

I too am going to miss some of the regulars but we still have a great group coming and will get to me some NEW regulars. I still expect there to be around 150 people and that is a good crowd.
