Help-valve shim tool
MiCarl replied to dug050's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I hadn't looked closely enough to see it had been shortened. I don't see an issue with that, I think the leg is just to have a place to hold onto it. -
I once had a quick change place tell me my fuel injectors were dirty and they recommended a can of their additive for my gasoline. I was really tempted to ask them to show me these dirty injectors since the car had a carburetor...........

Help-valve shim tool
MiCarl replied to dug050's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Thanks for the plug. Actually I buy them from K&L Supply like every other seller. The price is anything but reasonable, but I guess since they're the only ones that have them it's take it or leave it (or make your own). At least they didn't Jack up the price 30%+ like they did last Jan 1. Gary I wonder if you shouldn't put the chamfer on the tail of the tool in your simplified drawing. I find I've usually got the stock tool rotated around to where it would hit the head if the chamfer weren't there. -

Pull the rubber plug off the clutch slave cylinder and jam a tissue down in by the wires. Run it for a few minutes and pull the tissue. If it's got oil on it you found your leak. -
Those things are a real pain to work on. I think the dealers must hire double jointed mechanics to do them. Always seems my elbow and wrist won't quite bend so I can reach in there.

Or how does he know you go through at 5:30 AM? Is he one of those guys with nothing to do at that hour but look out his window for problems, or do you perhaps have some loud pipes that roll him out of bed and leave the impression of speeding? Seems like he put a lot of effort into the sign. In any case, I'll bet NV has laws about constructing hazards on a public roadway.

Ok, I give up...where does it go?
MiCarl replied to coy55boy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
They like to hang up behind the top of the radiator. If it's not on the floor have a look there. -
intake question
MiCarl replied to kevin-vic-b.c.'s topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Be sure and test them for leaks. I replaced a set on my first motorcycle because they looked like they were about to fall apart. When I pulled them off the insides looked like new. If you do need replacements the ones I sell include the o-rings. I don't generally ship to Canada because customs is a nightmare on anything larger than a very small box. If you do want them send me a message and we'll try to work something out. -

It goes around the top of the fork tube. Between the air joint and the top of the tree. #84 in the picture. It is right side up in your picture. Since you have two forks you'll need to find the other one. -
Timing chain cover?
MiCarl replied to GOINtoHELL's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Do you mean alternator cover? If so, it'll lose some oil if you do it on the side stand. If you stand it up straight you'll lose whatever oil is in the cover whether you drain the oil or not. Personally, I wouldn't stand a bike without center stand up straight without having it tied down to a work fixture. I'd drain the oil first. -
If it were the forks with that much play you'd probably be spewing oil everywhere. It could also be wheel bearings. Do your same test, but hold the forks instead of the wheel. If your play goes away then it's wheel bearings. If not, it'll be the steering bearings.

A 12 oz can should be plenty. DOT3 is perfectly sufficient for the job, there is no advantage to DOT4 in this application. Back bleeding is a messy nasty way to go. I doubt if you can even do it with the speed bleeder in. I like a vacuum bleeder but pump and hold should also work, especially with a speed bleeder installed. It'll flow better if you leave the lever released.

Probably a locksmith. If the key you have has the key code stamped on it then it's possible to order a key cut to that code.

89 VR Intregrated Brake ?
MiCarl replied to GolfVenture's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Ride it the same as any other bike. There is no special method required for the linked brakes. You won't notice any difference. To answer your other question: The hand lever only activates the right front caliper, there is not interconnection to the foot (rear) system. -
We did some traveling with the dog last year. Two were weekend trips (400 miles or so each) in VERY hot weather. Our girl seemed none the worse for wear. She wasn't asphyxiated or roasted and she can still hear the can opener a mile away. No handling issues at all. Could easily forget it was back there.

For anyone who wants to save a buck here is an email I got from Flo ---- I've got no idea if the promo code will work more than once. First come, first served. I'll bet the code is good for the other shows too......

Bad Boy Horn - Am I missing something???
MiCarl replied to elmicko's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
You can plug the relay right onto your old horn wires (purple in the picture). Your Bad Boy probably had a relay in the package. Works off the stock horn button. -
Bad Boy Horn - Am I missing something???
MiCarl replied to elmicko's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
It is way louder than a stock horn. Did you use a relay and dedicated power feed. You also need at least 16 ga. wiring and a good ground also on 16 ga. Got the polarity right? They don't make much noise if you have the positive and negative switched. Finally you can test the horn by connecting at least a 10 amp 12V supply directly to the horn. If it doesn't wake the dead you've got a defective horn. -
That motorcycle has been down. As Earl pointed out, that damage to the fairing was caused by pavement. I wouldn't let that bother me EXCEPT I'd wonder what other parts of the story weren't quite accurate...............

Replacing Oil Pan on 86 VR
MiCarl replied to GolfVenture's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
1990 was then they went from the TCI to the single pickup computerized ignition. The 89 still has a TCI. -
Replacing Oil Pan on 86 VR
MiCarl replied to GolfVenture's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Very few differences. For some reason they changed the lower fork tubes in 87, moved the anti dives from the front (pre '87) to the side (87+). Even then, I believe you could interchange the tubes. Of course colors changed year to year. Other than that I'm not aware of any differences. Oh, one more thing. In 86 I believe they Venture was still available in a Standard. By 89 they were available Royale only. If the 86 is a standard it won't have the CB, cruise and all that that your 89 has. I believe the standard also used a different wiring harness because it didn't need the connections for all the Royale extras. -
They do .pdf files. Should be able to load the manuals that are linked in the tech library.

My in-laws gave my wife a Kindle for Christmas. The display is very impressive. Looks just like paper. What little I messed with it it looks like it probably does a great job as a reader. It's got a qwerty keyboard which gives me trouble because I touch type and don't "know" where the keys should be, just which finger. Unfortunately keyboard way too small for fingers........ I also really wanted to use the touch screen it doesn't have. Apparently the epub is standard for library books. My wife mentioned that the Kindle wouldn't do the epub library books (stateside). She wanted a kindle because of the stuff that's available that is not in print at all. BTW, it does text to speech. I assume the Borders one does also. So Dan can enjoy his even if he can't read.......
