  1. Have not gone enough miles yet to know for sure, but so far (after 250 miles) there is no change in anything. MPG the same, noise the same, etc. Like I said, maybe I have not gone far enough yet; either way, it was worth the expense/effort to try to find something to quieten the bike down some.
  2. I have had the Bubs on my RSTD for a year or so now. NO rejetting needed with K&N and Bubs. No need to re-synch carbs either. Nothing to do but install them and enjoy the improved look/sound. As for the "flaking", I do not have it (yet). Maybe they got the problem fixed.
  3. Generally get 40-42 on hwy at 70 or so. Moving up into the eighties costs big time: mpg down in the mid30s. Best mileage I ever get regularly is on the 50-mph Natchez Trace: 50 mpg.
  4. How long before I can expect my Bub tips to start flaking? Have had them going on a year; so far, so good. Maybe they have gotten their chrome problem fixed?
  5. Harleys HAVE to be released as early as possible to give the dealers more time to unload them onto the unsuspecting. If you gotta have something with HArley on it, just buy a d*mn t-shirt; spend your real money on a better machine (Star or any Yamaha cruiser/tourer). Cannot help it, but all of this false "glowing" about HArleys leaves me cold. Have had three of the things. Worthless junk. Pretty. Worthless. Junk.
  6. Just a word - my .02 worth - as I lost quite a bit of money when re-selling my Mustang "seat" after one long miserably uncomfortable trip. IN my opinion, the stock seat is a better seat than the Mustang (unless you like being crammed against the gas tank and riding on concrete). I guess I am on a one man crusade against Mustang seats, but in my opinion they truly suck. As for other comments, I usually make one long summer trip per year (from Mississippi up through Wyoming, etc., into Glacier NP and into Canada was my last one), and a backrest is worth its weight in gold! The backrest is all I miss about the Mustang. Take your time. Stop often.
  7. Thanks for the link. Will have to check it out; says the cowling bras are "under development" but that was some time back. Will post when I find out if they are available yet.
  8. Bizarre! Assuming there is a difference between "facts" and "opinions" is one of the problems. Usually "facts" are just someone else's "opinions" that you have chosen to substitute for your own thinking. Goose, what IS your problem? Are you just one of those who just HAS to know "everything"? Before you attack anything I say, make D*MN sure you know what you are talking about )IF you ever do).
  9. After changing the filters to K&N, changing the pipes to BUBS, and plugging the annoying AIS, I too am keeping my modifications. The bike runs easier, breathes easier, gets slightly better mpg . . . there is NO downside. This after over 7,000 miles after having done the mods.
  10. Does anyone know of anybody making/selling high quality leather "bras" for the lower plastic pieces on either side of the radiator? Forget what they're called - the bug, scratch, and chip catchers?
  11. if you don't mind pushing it. I have had three Harleys over the years. The first caught on fire on the Denver-Boulder highway (barely escaped with my . . . um . . . parts, but the bike burned to a golden, chromed crisp). Second one was an ElectraGlide Classic. Ran fine until I turned it off. Dead batteries. Ate batteries and voltage regulators like popcorn. Third one was a Softail. Ok. For bar hopping only. I have had my 2005 RSTD for almost five years now, and not one single glitch, not one problem. This is, without a doubt, the best bike I have ever owned (been riding 45+ years now). I have little or nothing for Harley snobs. Do not owe them a d*mn thing. Not even respect. If they like to push, load into pickups, feed the slow beast premium gas, etc, etc., so be it. I just wanted something . . . GOOD! . . . this time around.
  12. I have an immaculate 2005 RSTD for sale (19,000 miles, always garage kept, many extras, etc). $8500
  13. I have had three Harley. The reason they ride in packs is because they do not want to be alone on the side of the road when the inevitable breakdown occurs. Some HD riders are very much like any other gang members; they travel in packs because they fear being alone. Anyway, the 1% are a dying breed. Thank God. One can only spend so much time stranded on the side of the road watching Yamahas cruise by before he gets the idea.
  14. I have the BUBS. Really like them. Not very loud but seem good quality.
  15. Same is true in Mississippi. I have stocked up on 5.56/.223 and 12 gauge. Just got a Saiga 13-round 12 gauge . . . better not to have to aim, you know!
  16. Chapstick and HEAVY sunblock. Nothing quite so uncomfortable as taking a shower after your first 700 mile day and discovering your forearms are fried to a crisp! Something to lean back against (bedroll, sleeping bag, whatever) makes a world of difference.
  17. Thanks for all of the replies. It's really funny in that I have had my RSTD a little over 4 years now and have never once seen anything I like more or wish I had. That is unusual for me. I have always traded things (motorcycles, cars, etc) every few years. There is nothing I would change on this motorcycle. I do not even hear the "whine" any more. Thanks again. Glad to hear it'll probably outlast me!
  18. I have an 05 RSTD with Bub slip-ons. It really does sound more like a strong V8 than a bike. It took some getting used to, but these pipes sound great. Not too loud either.
  19. I do wish I got to ride more. Except for regular but short rides on the Natchez Trace, I am pretty much limited to one long trip each summer (I would say 10,000 of my miles have been MS to AZ, MS to CO, MS to MT); I see no reason why a water cooled, well-maintained engine should not live as long as a car.
  20. I have a 2005 RSTD with 18,500 miles on it. I maintain it meticulously. How many miles can I expect it to live? I am thinking it should be like a car and go for WELL over 100,000 miles. What do you think?
  21. As mine is paid for (and I have a terrible habit of getting new stuff when I don't need it), I am very happy that nothing changed with the 09. No temptation at all. Having had three Harleys over the years, they will NEVER tempt me again. So . . . if I want a Honda, I'll get a diesel Civic when they get here. Everything just fine with my 05 with 18000 miles; it should outlast me!
  22. Mine has whined from day one - new. However, some Bub slip-ons and a little time seems to have made me not even notice it any more. I've had a lot of motorcycles over the past 40 years or so, and this one is the best (whine or not). Just my opinion . . . my experience.
  23. Two per tip were on mine (2005 RSTD).
  24. Just subscribed to Roadrunner Magazine (the discount was great!). Does anyone know of any other motorcycle magazine that caters to touring? Off and on over the years, I have subscribed to various motorcycle mags, but I just no longer have any interest in "this month's crotch rocket showdown" type of articles. Thanks.
  25. My 05 RSTD doesn't have them either; sure wish it did.
