I have right at 25,000 miles on my RSTD with no sign (yet) of rear shock failure. Is this failure inevitable? I would be interested in knowing how many rear shocks have NOT failed? Just out of curiosity.

RSTD Maintenance Question
spyderhead replied to spyderhead's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Thanks! Guess that answers my question. As I weigh well over 200# and my bike never bottoms out or anything else, I guess my shock has not failed or even lost its air. That's some good news. Thanks again.- 7 replies

RSTD Maintenance Question
spyderhead replied to spyderhead's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Another quick question: I have maybe twice in the past seven years put air into my shocks (either front or rear). I read a lot about the rear shock failure. Considering I never add air in the first place, will I even know if/when it fails? I would personally be happy without air shocks but they are there; I just find no use for them. As always, thanks for your opinions/advice.- 7 replies

RSTD Maintenance Question
spyderhead replied to spyderhead's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Thanks. That is sorta what I was thinking - rubber breaks down. I had just not remembered ever seeing it in print before . . . but . . . I will bet you are right in that it SHOULD be done but almost NEVER is actually done.- 7 replies

Just put my 2005 RSTD in the shop for major maintenance (valve adjustment, plugs, etc, etc). I have a question: the maintenance schedule says to replace brake lines every two years. WHY??? I have had bikes most of my life, and I do not recall ever seeing anything in routine maintenance about replacing brake lines/hoses. As always, any help is appreciated.

I have over 18000 miles on my current set of Commanders and would love to replace them with Commander IIs. Like someone said, there is a tire for the rear of the RSTD but the size for the front is a rear tire and will not do. Any idea of another size that might work for the RSTD front?

Hard to win a game with just ten players; guess nobody told LSU they had to have a quarterback. Maybe they can find one by next year.

That's an idea. I have a friend who rides with some motorcycle group and lives on Ina Road there in Tucson. Might get him to put the word out with his group. Thanks

Thanks, everyone, I appreciate the comments. It's about what I thought - priced toward the high end in a very soft market in a lousy economy. Thanks again.

This may not be the place for this question, but I would like to know if you think the RSTD I have listed in the classified is overpriced (before I relist it on eBay). NADA (for what that's worth) shows a 2005 RSTD at $6830 for average retail. I apologize if this is the wrong place for this question, but I have learned a lot about my bike on this forum and do respect your opinions. Thanks. Mine is the 2005 one pictured in front of the Cypress Swamp sign on the Natchez Trace. Again, if this is inappropriate question on the forum, (moderators) just delete.

I got seven full years out of my original RSTD battery; never even owned a battery tender. Guess I was just lucky.

Maintenance Cost???
spyderhead replied to spyderhead's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Thanks for all the replies. Two dealerships in the Jackson area have gone under in the past few years (one was a Honda-Yamaha and the other a Yamaha); I think I am going to look for one of their mechanics for future work. Hopefully one of their now unemployed techs is working on his own. -
Maintenance Cost???
spyderhead replied to spyderhead's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
The dealer wants $900 just to repack the steering head. I am thinking it'd be better just to keep going until something breaks - then pay to have it fixed. $900 in "preventative maintenance" is just not cost effective. -
I have been very lucky with my RSTD. The stock battery finally died last week (after 7 trustworthy/faultless years!) This is the winter to do some more detailed maintenance. I have an estimate of $750 from my local dealer for adjusting the valves, new plugs, synching the carbs, and flush/fill of the coolant system. That seems fair to me. However, the dealer is saying that - at 25,000 miles - I am overdue to have the steering head repacked at $900!!! No way. Just asking: how much have you paid to have the steering head repacked (and is it even necessary?) As always, THANKS! in advance.

Finally, after over 7 years, the stock battery that came in my 2005 RSTD died yesterday. I would say seven years is not too bad! Looks like DEKA AGM is the way to go on a new one. Anyone have a suggestion for new battery?

Battery Question
spyderhead replied to spyderhead's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
That makes sense. Still . . . I guess I will just keep riding it until it fails. I do have road service on it, so after a jump start, it'll be time to buy a battery. I do find it odd that so many people seem to be replacing batteries after a couple years and this one has gone now almost seven. Never used a battery tender. Nothing. Just got lucky I guess. -
Battery Question
spyderhead replied to spyderhead's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Thanks for the reply. I wonder why the warranty is so terrible (1 yr) on motorcycle batteries? -
I have a 2005 Tour Deluxe with the original battery (bought Oct, 2004). The bike has a touch over 24,000 miles and is for sale here and in other places. Whether it sells or not, I would hate for the buyer or me to get stranded when the battery dies. I hate to fix something that is not broken, and this original battery works just like it did from day one - but its days have to be over/near over. What is the BEST battery I can replace this OEM battery with? Thanks. Jim

I am a teacher (20 years now), and - yes - the bands DO mean something (different colors meaning different things) at least on the high school level. On the high school level, the bands are exchanged for "favors" (sexual) depending on the color involved. This has been the ongoing case for over two years now. I am NOT saying that little kids know what they are doing/wearing when they wear them. Just stating the case at the high school level.

The official word is now in: it is NOT 5000 barrels per day; it is more like 70,000 barrels per day. Good old BP. At least they are consistent liars.

Motorkote comments and tracking??
spyderhead replied to Judes Dude's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
There is no change in fuel mileage, shifting, or the infamous whine. What I find most interesting is how much opinions vary on the usefulness of Motorkote. I doubt that adding it has harmed my bike in any way; however, from my experience, it has not helped anything. Just neutral. It WAS worth the money, however, to try to find a product to help ease the "whine", but mine was never that bad anyway. From here, I would say to keep your money, and to spend it on something else. -
The real thing is - as others have said - we do not know the "why" of this event. We may never know as the mainstream media will spin it the way the government tells them to spin it. Truth is quite hard to find these days. I feel sad for the victims. We will probably never know WHY this happened.

The fluff piece that supposedly takes apart the better MSG article is just that: a fluff piece. It is like the articles written by "scientists" claiming that aspartame is safe. Just BS.
