Understanding of course that if I decided not to take it you owe me nothing.. Its about 10 hours of drive time pulling a trailer and you taking 9 for it would help ALOT!! What do you think? 'Puc

^^WORD^^ Funny,,,, I enjoy my old Heathkit Booney Bike as much as I do my 69 Santee Chop.. Only way I may differ from Wanderer on this one is that I also LOVE playing with the minds built on ego - needling peoples what I do hahaha.. You just gotta learn to appreciate how deeply affected with materialism we all can be - then you can start having fun with it.... Of course the mostest fun of all is being on two-wheels of any kind at any time,, than all those little hurt feelings just disappear and you find it doesnt matter of all... 'Puc

### Per the Polaris website..### Have any of you folks ever sat down and watch "The Lion King" with your kids?? There is part in that show where the three jackals are goofing around saying "Mofasa",,,, one says Mofasa and the other ones go "ohhhhhh" and says "say it again" and the one says it again about 3 times all going "ohhhhhhhh" and get chills each time its said - remember that??? Well,, picture ol 'Puc doing exactly that "ohhhhhhh" and getting those chills everytime he reads the Polaris name associated with a motorcycle.... To many bad experiences with their sleds and quads at the shop I guess.... 'Puc

VERY NICE AREA - all of it!! Just a couple quick notes that may or may not be of assistance.. 1st - Watch for deer, especially the last hour of daylight and right after dark.. They tend to stir about then and cross roads into their feed areas.. Highway 2 from Wisconson to the bridge is actually a really nice ride and a lot safer than inland further cause a lot of it is beach on one side - deer dont really like beach sand that much.. Esc anaba is really neat - has some pretty interesting maritime stuff.. 2nd - ya gotta do the bridge crossing at least once at night and once in daytime, ALWAYS have lots of warm clothes if planning to ride up yonder - it can be 70 here in the lower and 40 up there ANYTIME!! Then a little nite ride and your frost bit.. 3rd - We are having a MAJOR issue with skeeters this year and I suspect black flies will follow soon.. Keep bug dope handy!! 4th - Because of the xtra rains and snows that we had this year (also why our skeeters are terrible) our pot holes are xtra xtra bad - keep a weathered eye peeled!! Have a great trip and enjoy our states! 'Puc

oh yea, seems like his mileage was in the 45/50 range, will ask him today when I see him and find out how accurate that is.. I know its right up being Injected and all..

Condor, my Nephew bought a brand new 1st year model and WOW - what a machine!! He has since added a lot of stuff (yea he's normal) like quick connect shield, Stang seating, light bar - just added different pipes and bought the programmer for redoing the mapping.. I bet gained 15 horse from the combo - didnt need it but hokey smokes does it fly now!!! I have spent lots of time on it and gotta say that I have been VERY impressed with the bikes handling, extreme electric power like pull and now, its sound - it sounds AWESOME!! He paid 16 for his (I think its 3 years old now if memory serves me correctly) and I have since seen brand new left overs here in Michigan for 13,500.. He did buy the Strat "S" model though, little more chrome and stuff in the right places.. While I surely wouldnt give that guy 18 for it I ABSOULUTLY would advise grabbing one if you were so inclined - I would if I could afford it!! If you wanna talk to someone who ownes one, rides it alot and knows the machine well I can hook you up with him anytime!! 'Puc
-
Dont know what size to advise but I always weld up the seams after I bolt them together, its amasing how much flex that takes out of the whole contraption, another word of advice - its also a LOT easier to get a good weld when they are brand new!!

Makes me drool just reading your itinerary, I LOVE the desert - thats awesome!! Heres wishing you folks Godspeed! Couple of quick suggestions.. 1st - have fun 2nd - have more fun If you find the Dragon a little more commercialized and a ticket trap, try riding the Cherohaula Skyway (short drive on the way to the Tail).... Take that back, just plan on riding the Cherohaula - you will be glad you did! Also, coming that close to Michigan you might wanna make sure you have warm clothes with you, we did the Blessing of the Bikes last weekend here and it snowed and a short jaunt up to our U.P. was in the teens at night.. Oh yea, have fun!!! 'Puc

You are more than welcome Annie.. Please tell your Aussie friends who are coming State side to have a GREAT trip and if they happen to get in/around my area (Michigan) to let me know and I would be glad to show them around! I always consider folks from down under as family because of your countrys alignment with the fight(s) for freedom and in keeping us all free.. 'Puc

While reading a post about who's going where when and taking what, it occured to me that I had no clue of where some of the places mentioned were at.. It also occured to me how really cool some of the places sounded and that if I knew what State the writers were talking about I would make a point to visit them to see for myself.. I am going to try and remember to include the State abrieviations with my ride storys in the future, if you think of it please do the same. Thanks 'Puc

Someone had posted a message back a while ago about some friends that were coming state side for a bike trip and would be needing a trailer.. I just found and actually seen a inexpensive actual bike trailer that Harbor is selling - list is 430 US and on sale right now for 350 US.. Lot Number of the unit in my sale flyer is Number 66771 Hope this helps someone. 'Puc

Good stuff here,,, the comment about why an ohm meter doesnt work is spot on! Without a load on the device it is next to impossible to find the resistance to current flow because digital stuff is sooooooo sensitive.. Yea, listen to the guy that wrote this, he has talent!

Been doing cross country since wayyyy before cross country was cool.. Learned many great tricks over the years.. Bring two pair of undies, a pair of riding short (soft cotton is best) - if you are inclined to monkey butt get a pair of chamios lined riding shorts like we use for Harescrambled, 4 or five hooded sweat shirts, pair of jeans. I usually wear out 4 pair of shorts on a two monther but come home with my jeans still clean - I like to wear shorts in the desert heat.. Anyway, its easier to replace dirty clothes then wash them I have found.. Goodwill is always good for shorts for a buck and you cant even start a washer for that.. Get a small pop up tent, piece of thin foam rubber mat (hospitals use them) and as big as bike cover as you can find.. I usually sleep under my bike cover with the bike more then using the tent - especially on that awesome warm nights in the Desert with NO bugs.. Stay out of the motels, rough it - learn to enjoy the outdoors! I always carry a gallon of water on my antenna and a bag of apples hung there too.. Eat real light - makes for a much more pleasent ride.. Carry a cheap digital camera with you - get one the uses SD Cards and Double A bats. When you drop the camera taking pics on the highway you can go back and remove the card and toss the rest! Go to walmart and buy another one... Most important part is learning you bike, you should be able to come to a complete stop - dont touch ground - take back off.. Balance balance balance practice practice practice - this will increase your fun on a good cross country ride threefold... 'Puc

I went to the Blessing of the Bikes in Baldwin Mi this past weekend and saw 1,262 and 1/2 Harleys, 3 second gens, two 1st gens, a Triumph 3 cyl, 6 Vulcans, two dogs hooked together, a dead fish on the PM RIver overpass, four frozen biker ladies with not enough clothes on, no one eating ice cream (it was only 43 degrees out) and a squished hotdog on the side of M-37.... Had fun on my old 69 Santee Chop, took a police whistle with me and stopped the biker cops in downtown Baldwin to let people cross in front of them hahahaha What a riot!! Lets see,, got a pic or two somewhere here... Pics didnt work,, gotta use your imagination I guess.. Puc

On the way to Strugis a few years ago we had stopped for dinner, we arrived in Murdo SD about 2 minutes to 10 and barely got our orders in before closing.. Sitting waiting for our food a guy walks buy with a shirt on that said "Harley Davidson - I bought mine in Irag" and sat down behind the guy I was riding with.. I told my buddy that this new guy wasnt gonna get fed, sure enough the waitress shook her head no as he asked.. He got up and started out the door and as he walked by us I inquired about the shirt.. His name is Major Cloyd Smith (google him - really a neat guy) from Butler Pennsylvania.. As started telling us his story about getting his new bike I asked him to set down and chat for minute.. When our food came I told the waitress to give it to him that I wasnt hungry.. He said he couldnt do that, I told him that if he didnt eat it I would throw it out because I could NEVER eat in front of a person who had no food but had been over in that hell giving his life for my freedoms.. He finally agreed to eat.. After that he rode the trip with us, BRAND NEW Harley Heritage and he is two tracking with me in the mountains for MILES on gravel and dirt roads - he told me later that that was the absoulute most fun he had ever had on a bike.. We are now the best of friends, he has been to our home in Michigan and stayed with us here and has a key to our home.. Folks,,, these people who have served and are serving our country deserve to be treated with honor and total respect AND items (like flags) that show patriotism and love of county deserve that same respect.. Yea,, I guess I am just a softy, I have never been in the military but if I find someone breaking those rules above I WILL kick their ##$ anyway!!!!! 'Puc

I have crossed the lower 48 many times and really gotta say, 1st worst for abuse of police authority is Nebraska (buddy got an 1100 dollar fine for not putting on the hat as we crossed into Omaha), Tennessee (visit the Dragon and you will see), California (just plain arrogant and last is my home state of Michigan - our small town police forces and courts are attrocious, truth means NOTHING - its all about money!!! Other than those, including AZ and NM, man what a wonderful breath of fresh "legal" air!!! I REALLY use to enjoy Montana,,, go old Montana - what America used to be 'Puc

Annie, I dont know if the folks you are speaking of are the typical Harley riders we have here but, most of ours would only tow a trailer they could fold out and sleep in and have dinner in and go potty in.. They dont tour like a couple of us off breeds do,, sleeping in ditches with tents that never do acutally get put up.. Roughing it is part of the ride... I say all that so you can maybe get taste of what I am about to explain to you..... If it were me doing what they are planning on doing I would go to nearest Harbor Frieght store when I got my bike state side and buy lot number 42708 - this is small trailer PERFECT for pulling behind I scoot - comes road ready after you bolt it together (I actually would never do this because I dont pull trailers behind my bike - I toss the tent on, bag on, clean socks, one pair pants, one shirt, riding shorts and tenny shoes and usually the only thing worn out and repurchased on trip are a few pair of riding shorts..).. Anyway, after I bought the trailer I would put it together, tow it to menards, or Walmarts or Sams Club or a trailer place and buy one of those nifty little cartop clamshells that fit on these little trailers perfectly.. Drill four holes thru the bottom of the clamshell into the rails on the trailers, smear some seal-all over the bolts so no water can get in and you have a PERFECT little brand new trailer to haul all over the contenient for under 500 bucks.... But,,,, it dont fold out into a camper,,, those are 3500 USED and a little more new...... And I dont know anyplace that rents them..... Take that back,,, I think I did hear of Harley shop out west that rents bikes and trailers.. Maybe they could find one thru the HOG membership????? Hey,, I have an totally true trick that I pulled on some Aussies that were touring the country for a year and bumped into them in Rapid City SD... You would LOVE IT!!! Thing is,, I aint typing it out unless 10 or more people want me to.. A trick I learned hahah Harbor Freights web site is Harborfreightusa.com Your welcome Puc

Indeed, my story is very simular to yours only a few decades in difference.. Being the only gear head of 1 brother and 5 sisters I was left with the neccesity of figuring all this stuff out on my own.. After owning MANY jap bikes thru the years I finally broke and bought a New Low Rider in 78.. I had owned Yam XS's, Kaw 750's, Honda CB750's and tons of smaller scoots leading up to the BIG DAY! While I was NEVER impressed with the marketing scam HD was running back then that worked on this premise "we will charge x4 of anything even close to what the japs are selling - its a very small price to pay because of all the substancial upper crust snobishness you get to own because you are bying harley parts".. Well,, I did get the ol girl over 100k, had it to the west coast on several occasions and got to do the Harley during the era when "Lonesome Highway" was my favorite show and the Beach Boys were right on top of their game... Few years later and I too discovered that I really didnt need the accolades the dealers gave me for giving them 4 times the money I would have on my japper and I went bald so there went longsome highway too.. Being a TRUE gear head I started looking for the most underestimated, misunderstood scoot out there and ran across the VR one day.. Got a ride on one, really liked the industrial strength everything everywhere and, being a MXer at the time,, REALLY liked the way that great big hyper volacity touring bike didnt mind having her pipes drug in the twisties - yessir,, love at first bite!!! I have had MANY opportunities to go harley over the years and even have owned a few more from building chops and taking them in on trade...... I have a hunch that you are a lot like me, not that you will never own another HD,,, its more like you will never be without another low dollar thrill bike like these Crotch Rockets in sheeps clothing... Get it, pull maintenance right away so you know you bike,, sync the carbs - check air pressure on the rubber and let er rip 'puc

X2 Only I just gently pull the bike off the side stand and let it balance itself at center, carefully bend down and bingo.. Once you get the hang of it you will be surprised how easy it is.. I actually like the window, its those goofy bikes with the weep hole and no way to actually check the level that I dont care for...

I have been a Michigander all my life. Many moon ago I closed up the operation here in Muskegon and the wife and I temporarily planted our feet in Cadillac.. I worked for Baker College up there in Admin.. There was a cutey pie from Mesick that worked and went to school on our campus that was your towns Mushroom Queen one year.. If memory serves me correctly, she was born and raised up there.. She also was a very talented singer.. Cant remember her name - any idea? Have you been in Mesick long? Have you ever heard of the title "Mushroom Queen" before?? Are you doing the Blessing this year?? You ever get down under give me a shout and we will see if we can hookup, what say.. 'Puc

Alright lets see,,, these are in the order that I would prioritize them if I were doing them again.. 1st - Heating elements in the grips and in the backrest and raised portion on the rear of my seat.. Total cost = 40 bucks and a couple hours of time. It is SOOOOOOOO freaking comfy being able to ride relaxed no matter how cold it gets AND, I have found thru years of riding that the more uncomfortable you are the more dangerous you become to yourself and others.. 2nd - I made a set of pipes for it out of thin wall chain link fense poles and some 16 gauge steel. Synced and tuned the engine to the pipes. Now people know I am there, I have watched deer run away from my bike AND I have been told by the younger generation that my bike is the "sickest" sounding ride they have ever heard... I take that as a compliment.. 3rd - cut an old windshield I had way down so when I am in my normal long distance riding position I am looking over the shield by 3 inches and yet still in the "no-wind" zone. 4th - built up a tool kit that matches the bikes needs to a tee. 5th - floorboards for the rider - my girls have done many cross country trips on my Yams and we fiqured out a long time ago that those boards are wayyyy more comfy for them. 6th - Quick release oil plug - pull a pin - swing the door and its open.. Soooo much quicker and easier to swap oil in a parking lot while traveling. 7th - progressive fork springs 8th - KX500 clutch springs - NO MORE SLIPPING EVEN DUMPING THE CLUTCH IN FIFTH!! 9th - the deer horns I stole from a dead Muly out in Montana years ago - they have started more conversations with everyone from old grandmas to little kids.. I love people and am always looking for ways to get folks to tell me their lifes story.. 10th - last but not least, the little wedge shaped saftey mirrors I found out in Idaho that are mounted on my mirrors - I loved them so much that I spent the time to remove them from my 84 and have the 84 mirrors now on my 83.. Have saved my life many times!!! 'Puc

Find a place that does lambs, look at the lambs standing around and find a big one, put your lamb in line with other ones and make sure it is facing the big one, push your lamb against the lamb in front of it, the other lamb will turn around and butt heads with your lamb and knock it down, when it gets knocked down it will get pieces of corn and stuff caught in its fuzz, the other lambs will go after it trying to eat the food caught in your lambs fuzz, your lamb will start crying and going baahhh baahh real loud, your lamb going baah bahh real loud with make the lambs lick it even more then it would have gotten licked if it hadnt gone baahh bahh, let the other lambs finish doing their thing with your lamb, allow your lamb to get chased by the other lambs after they get done cleaning up the fuzz on your lamb - you will think they are chasing your lamb cause they want more food but they are acutally drying your lambs fuzz - if they dont chase your lamb and dry its fuzz you will have to do it, if you do chase your lamb DO NOT go baah bahh while doing so - I knew a biker from Sanfransico that did that and he was incarcerated for 15 years, apparently this is highly illegal. After chasing your lamb for 1 hour corner it and feel it and see if its fuzz is dry yet, if not you will have to chase it some more. NEVER NEVER NEVER sit on a wet lamb, you will be scarred for life AND you will never be able to find people to ride with again.. Just some free advice 'Puc

what ever you choose to use be sure and clean the system out before using something different... I am no chemist but I had a bike that someone had decided to combine a couple different type of AF and when I got it on the lift and pulled the waterpump there were GOBS of gelled up gooey crap in there and it took me for ever to get her cleaned out.. Personally, I would use something friendly with alloys and get if from Walmarts so you can always find it if needed on a trip.. 'Puc
