  1. Has anyone had problems with the auto volume control. My 84 has gave me problems since ive had it. I can set the volume to where i can hear it comfortable while riding and all of the sudden the thing blairs loud. So i turn it down and a few minutes later im turning it back up because its gotten to quiet. it does this constantly and it drives me crazy. I have removed the bottom unit where the auto volume control is located and tried cleaning it with no results. Does any one know how or if it can be by passed or do i need to replace it.
  2. I'm sure some of you guys have already figured this out but for some this may be interesting. I never listen to the radio. I always listen to my MP3 player. On our last big ride we had 12 bikes and most of them had load pipes. Going though Atlanta we also had the noise of 18 wheelers and cars. I had my MP3 player turned all the way up and the volume on the AUX pegged at 30. Yes I was getting distortion but it was the only way I could hear my MP3 player. The next day I was going through my junk and I noticed a old battery powered MP3/IPOD amplifier. I connected it to my MP3 player and turned the amp on and wow what a difference the amp made. I have Polk db401 speakers in the front and stock speakers in the rear. After a few minutes of listening to my music and trying the volume out my son pops his head into the garage and tells me my wife said to turn the volume down. Ok well I will take my Venture down the intersate and test her out. Without turning the volume up on the MP3 player and with the volume set at 20 on AUX the MP3 player was load and clear all the way up to 100 mph. WOOOHOOO!!!! Cheap fix. Now this amp doesn't do anything for the radio or cb but I hardly ever use either one of those anyway but for the MP3/IPOD it is great, cheap and easy to use. Harry:sign woo hoo:
  3. I bought an 89 Royale and the radio has a couple of problems. First off, the volume control is extremely sensitive. One click from all the way down and the radio is at medium volume. At 2 clicks, it's loud, and at 3 its as loud as it gets. Also, the tone control seems to have very little effect from one extreme to the other. I took the control unit apart and checked the volume and tone potentiometers, and they are good. Does anybody have a more complete schematic than the one line page that's in the manual?? Frank D.
  4. Hello to all; I just completed the antenna upgrade and all is fine. Took the scoot out on the road this morning and the tunes were coming in from areas I have not heard from in a long time. Got home and parked. Went back out to wash the bike and switched on the key to aux. too play some tunes and I had very little volume. Started up the bike to see if maybe it had something to do??? No avail, same result. At Vol 30, I can hear music very clearly out of all four speakers, but with very little volume. The volume control knob, when turned in the direction to decrease volume, does just that. It seems that the range of volume is happening between setting 1 ~ 3. I went through the settings to see if the fade was possibly affecting the output volume. I am unsure as to where to look next. Is there a mute button that I am not aware of?? Your help is always much appreciated. Thanks. Ricardo.
  5. Ok, this might be the answer to the question nobody ever asks, but here it goes anyway. My wife has always complained about the location of the rear headset connector, on the left side of the trunk. When plugging into the headset jack, the cable ultimately seems to come loose due to the upward pull on the straight connector. In the end the female socket broke out of the bracket and went intermittent. So the initial fix was to plug the intermediate cable of the headset into connector under the seat and routing the cable up next to the back rest. This solved the loose connector issue but introduce a different problem. By doing this you actually circumvent the handheld controller with the CB control and volume function. Which wasn't too bad until we invested into some nicer, modular helmets. Now the volume difference was very noticeable, I am almost deaf as it is, so turning up the master volume was the only way for me to hear the intercom. This made the wife's ears ring, as she has much better hearing left then I do. I cranked the volume on the front handlebar controller all the way up, but it was not enough to create enough bias front to rear. The ultimate solution (at least for us) can be seen in the pictures below. I bought a 5-pin DIN MIDI Extension Cable of EBay for a few $'s, you can also look for an AT Keyboard Extension Cable. I cut the cable in half as the shortest one I could find was around 6'. Then I removed the controller bracket of the trunk with four TORX screws holding it on and soldered the female extension side in parallel with the headset socket. As far as I know the cable colors are none standard, so I used a Ohm Meter to map the wires to the existing socket, which actually uses 6 wires with the shield. I insulated everything and replaced the strain relief to the grommet to include the new connector. The controller bracket was remounted and the headset intermediate cable was plugged into the new female connector and routed up the back rest. Now the wife can set her own headset volume using the volume control on the rear CB controller. I can set the bias between Satellite radio, Intercom and CB in the front and leave the volume on the handlebar controller untouched, she can set her own master volume in the rear using the rear CB controller. This should hopefully make riding more enjoyable until I have get under the knife for double knee surgery in May... Klaus
  6. Seems like I used to be able to adjust the intercom volume with the knob on the audio control box, but last time we road 2-up I couldn't turn the intercom up or down. I know there's an IC setting on the audio box, but isn't the intercom volume adjustable with the volume knob too? My wife can adjust how loud she hears me with her volume control on the passenger's seat, but for some reason I can't adjust mine. I'm running a Zumo GPS with MP3 and can adjust the volume to it and the radio fine. Also, all of the connectors under the fairing have already been pulled and dielectric applied. David
  7. just bought a wireless head set for my tv. this thing is awesome. it is made by sony. there are several other brands out there but this was reasonably priced for $79.95 at radeo shack, and highly recommended by thier electronics wizard. i had some way more expensivs ones in mind on the net for $239.00 that i tried at my friends house. this one sounds better then his. here's how they work. there is a transmitter charger that the head phones sit in that plugs into the audio out put on the back of the tv. they have a separate volume control on the phones and you can change the tv volume and mute it without affecting the phones. basically my wife can listen to the volume she wants which is usually very low, and i can set my volume to what i like. they work absolutely perfect. i barely have to turn my volume up to hear the tv perfect. the head phones are very high quality, and recharge when you set them back in the base transmitter. they will recieve the signal up to 150 feet from the tv. the model no. is # MDR-RF925RK you can probably get more info on the sony website. the frequency responce is incredible, great base and treble. topnotch product. there will now be no more arguing between me and linda about the tv blasting. bill :clap2:
  8. i have a 99 rsv and today while riding the raidio sound stoped. and when i pulled over you could hear it but very low and the volume nob made no diff after a while it will start to work. any help would be great thanks.
  9. Hey Folks, First of all, I'm new here, and am very impressed with all the information that is available and of the family atmosphere that is evident in all the conversations I've read. I'm glad I found this site and look forward to getting to know some of you. Been riding for many years but never did much of the wrenching on my bikes but now have some extra time and look forward to learning how. Read in some older posts about the many problems the RSV has with the audio system and made the decision to replace the amp. My audio problems: 1. radio comes out of rear speakers only - have to listen close with engine off to even hear it 2. CB works and has voume control 3. CD, aux, and cassette tape do not work at all - and are not even recognized 4. there is no volume control for radio, but can hear the beeps for each volume selection on the front speakers - it does shut off the volume at the lowest setting. 5. have split faring and cleaned all the connectors and put dielectric grease on them - when exercising the connectors I can make the radio work with a louder volume coming out of the front speakers until the key is shut off - then it returns to just faintly coming out of the rear speakers. Should receive my new used radio amp in the next couple days and look forward to installing in my 2000 RSV to see if that fixes the problems. But I digress. My question for you all is what other maintenance or improvements should I consider doing while I have the faring split with the radio amp out? Give me some pointers or some past experience. Keep in mind - just purchased this bike with 5000 miles on it in early September. I changed the oil and rear tire and put 7000 more miles on it during September. It is stock except for the windshield, passing lamps, and mufflers. I purchased it knowing about the audio problem. Thanks in advance, Jinksy
  10. I haven't seen anything mentioned like this on here yet, so I thought I'd mention it. I wanted something with just a little more volume than the OEM, but not as loud as the Baron's 4-2-4 that came with my bike, which I've got on Ebay right now. I was lucky enough to have a neighbor who rode a Harley and the other day I mentioned the RK muffler mod I had read about on here. He said he still had the ones he took off his '01 that I could have if I wanted to try it. Anyway, what I learned from him was the mod lots of Harley RK owners do to theirs to get the slight increase they wanted. You don't have to do any drilling or grinding!! When you look inside the baffles what you're seeing at the end of them is actually just a plug that is spot welded in place. There are two of them, one facing each end. All you have to do is find a bar or piece of thick wall pipe just slightly smaller than the opening and hammer it all the way through the muffler. It will knock both plugs out, then you have one continuous baffle straight through just like the old "Cherry Bomb" mufflers for cars. I did it and it turned up my highway volume just a little bit, but with a really nice tone. And the sweet part is the nice rumble you get when you take off that drops off as you level out. So there it is; the simplest exhaust mod I've heard of yet. And to think I had to learn it from a Harley owner!!
  11. How many of you are running the Edsets and in your opinion are they worth the extra money say over the J&M? I have the chatterbox now and have never really liked them and also they do not have good volume. Tom

    edset

Well, I finally installed my edset, and it went ok. But - it seems like I have to crank up the volume way up to get a bit of sound out of them. She who must be obeyed says when I intercom her it comes through nicely for her J&Ks - she has to turn her volume control down and I have to crank mine way up to hear her. Any idea about what gives here?
  13. I've installed the Polk 401db speakers in my 06 Midnight tonight.. Man, there's a job ya only wanna do once, especially in the trunk!! But was well worth it.. I don't think the volume is any higher than the clarion speakers but the quality is better to my ears. To my ears.. the Polks at volume 20 is like the Clarions at volume 17 or 18-ish.. Not sure.. One of the rear speakers on mine was damaged so I had to replace it.. I find these speakers to have a better quality sound, a deeper and richer tone to them.. Tomorrow I'll find out what they are like on the road..
  14. Has anyone here changed out, or had someone else change out, the AM/FM on their ride? I have the 04 RSV and can't stand the stock system. When I leave the area where my programmed channels are set then it's a pain in the arse to try and change them. I'd like to get something easier to use and preferrably one that won't break the bank. I'm not particularlly talented enough to do the work myself so I may have to take it somewhere for the job. I'm ok with the stock speakers. I'm also hoping the new system will improve the volume for my XM. My Garmin has XM and the volume thru the helmets suck. I can hear the radio with no problems but the XM just won't go up loud enough when at hi way speed.

    MP3 editor

I need to increase the volume of MP3s. I am a little deaf and while sitting the volume is enough but with wind noise I have to have the volume all the way up and that still is not enough. The radio volume is around 15 but Aux is all the way up and not enough. Any one know a good program that lets you adjust the level on the MP3 when you copy. Thanks Rod
  16. When I turn on the CB I hear what I would call white noise - a fairly loud hiss - It's level doesn't change with volume or squelch. Is this normal? When I transmit the other side hears a fairly loud humm together with my voice at a very low volume?? is that normal? How much clarity can I expect from this system ? I have a SWR meter but can't figure out how the wire connects to the antena - I see nothing in the manual?
  17. Thanks to Edsets and Don for getting us a great deal. When we got the 04 earlier this year it came with two Tour Com helmets with J&M's installed. We tried them, Wrong size, not impressed with helmet, not impressed with sound quality. Installed the new Edsets in our Shoei RJ helmets last week, (the install was easy and looks great) and tried them out yesterday, awesome! One quirk that our 2nd gen audio systems seem to have is the open intercom. I had always assumed that the front and rear talk button was for the intercom and the CB. I guess it's only for the CB. The Edsets sounded great until we started to ride. then they got noisy and really crappy sounding. Figured out real quick that you need to turn the IC volume down to "0" to enjoy the music. Am I missing something here or does the Wife need to thump me on the head to signal me to turn the IC volume up so she can tell me to slow down:confused24:
  18. So, the radio has been intermittent, at best last few weeks. Comes on, goes off, all on it's own. Tried the recommendation tonight of, splitting the fairing, reseating the big connectors and applying di-lectric grease before the last reseat. All, to no avail. Here's the current symptoms. -Radio plays through rear speakers only. -Volume control does nothing, doesn't get louder even at 30, only goes mute when it goes to zero. -When adjusting volume, the front speakers make that beep with every volume click, so they're working. -Also, the CB transmits through all 4 speakers and the volume adjustment for that, works fine. -Aux still doesn't work. Thought I was on to something when I discovered the connector from amp to cassette wasn't connected together. Still didn't work though, after connecting. One dealer thought it was the "head unit" needs to be replaced. Is that the amp? Another dealer thought, it's the antenna... So, it's sitting in the garage looking ugly, as the fairing is off. Luckily, rain tomorrow.....I hope. Any idears? Perty please?
  19. Hey All - Last week I picked up an 02 RSV Midnight Edition that was involved in a low speed wreck. It messed up the forks pretty good and some left side plastic. Other than that it looks like it's in great shape! I think that I have the plastic back in order, my new forks should be here on Monday, front fender on Tuesday. But the one part that eludes me is a volume control knob for the radio. Does anyone have out there have one? I'd be happy to pay for it. Looking at the parts book, I cannot just buy the knob from the dealer. Here's a pic of where I'm at with the repair... http://www.tomatojoe.com/Personal/no-nuthin-02.jpg I hope to have this sucker on the road this weekend! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Joe
  20. Have any of you that have a Zumo 550 noticed a drop in volume when listening to mp3 or XM thru the Zumo? When I am listening to FM or to my mp3 player I usually have my volume set at 17-18 but if I switch to the Zumo and listen to mp3s or XM I have to turn the volume up to 27-28 to get the same sound level. Is this normal:confused07:
  21. I have an 06 RSV and am using the JM helmet sets. I can hear my own voice in the headset, and that OK but the feedback is too loud. I must talk fairly loud so that passenger can hear on intercom but it doesn't need to be that loud in MY ears. Volume control doesn't adjust feedback volume. Can the feed back volume be adjusted??
  22. I installed the mic-mute on the bike and so far i'm not happy with it. We ride with ear plugs in and have the volume on the intercom up high. The mic-mute toggles the intercom but we get motor feedback no matter the ptt position. Anybody else have this problem, noticed it? We can eliminate the noise by turning down the intercom volume....but that defeats the purpose of the mic-mute!!!! Jim
  23. Hi All, Trying to decide if this conversion really makes a big difference in the audio quality on the Venture. I am somewhat concerned for when I pull up the etronics site, the same model EQ that was used for the conversion is listed as 200 watts, but the conversion thread states it is 100 watt, so I suspect the manufacturer may be playing the number game. For those of you that have done this, was it worth the effort? For example, before you may have had to turn your volume to 25 to hear at highways speeds, but after this install, were you reaching the same point around 15 or so? Already upgrade my speakers on a 2006 Venture to Marine grade Polk Audio, but since I listen at high volume, I want to ensure I get enough power to the speakers to keep from harming them in the long run, so torn between the EQ install or an AMP, however I don't want to loose any truck space. Thanks for any help and advice!!!!! :confused24:
  24. After I got bike running, now the rear shock bleeds off over a 24 hr. period. I went thru almost the same thing before and ended up buying the compressor because I couldn't find any air leaks due to the small volume or air involved. Any ideas on how to find the air leak with such a small amount of air?? Don H.
  25. I started this thread in another section, but thought it might be better here. I have a 1987 Venture Royale and need a few items. Most of these were lifted off the bike while at a shop getting a tune up. Rider and passenger attachable bags 1 Intercom/Radio volume knob Cassette deck cover Left engine side cover vent Needless to say if anyone has a line on these items please let me know.
