  1. I just found this trunk crack on my 91 VR. It is hard to see. It looks like a stress crack from age and hardening of the plastic, for there is nothing around it that indicates it got hit. And I have not loaded it much at all. I may have purchased it that way, only at that time I may have missed it. The crack does definately stop my fingernail from going over the crack. I dont know what those white spots are for they are not on the turnk. The paint on the trunk looks like the day it came off the show room floor The crack is also felt on the inside. Also the crack starts right dead center on one of the screws that hold the trim on. My options are 1) Just ignore it and hope the crack does not travel father 2) Take it to a body shop for an estimate 3) Buy a used trunk and have it professionally painted to match. 4) Your suggestions
  2. I found this white electricial plug underneath the trunk of my 91 VR as I removed the trunk so I can install a trunk guard. It has two female plugs Anyone know what it is for?
  3. started working on the Trike today. weather was in the high 40's today so I figured what the heck. Wasn't to bad in the garage. I moved the trunk back, it was really easy Took the 6 hold down bolts out, move it to the rear bolt holes, retightened. Took about 15 minutes. I have the same set up for the trunk as the 2 wheel version RSV. Then I figured since the weather is still pretty good I might as well change out the muffler. This took the rest of the day. Went from a set of noisy Sampson fish tails to a very nice sounding set of 05 RK's. A lot quietier, but still has a nice low rumble and a good bark when you get on it. My neighbors must have thought I was nuts, cause by the time I finished the install the weather went to heck. Temp dropped into the 30's with snow flurries, but there I was, riding up an down the road making noise. Sure felt good, even if it was for only a couple of minutes.
  4. I figured since many of you have been helping me with this bike, it's only fitting that I show you the progress so far. When I bought her last month she was running strong. The major thing was cosmetics. This is how I picked her up. She needed some repairs but a lot of cleaning and plastic work. One of the first things I did was buy a new seat. I found this one on EBay for $50. The original seat had a rip by the gas fill & was covered with stick junk. I've since read this is protectant breaking down & quite common. I understand that when the original owner died & the bike sat for years. A major part of my work so far has been tearing her down & cleaning, scrubbing & polishing. When I took her apart, you could not imagine the amount of dirt I found. The next thing I did was slap a trunk on her. When I bought my 81 Honda CB750, she came with K&G hard saddlebags & an aftermarket trunk. Since I pulled all the bags from the Honda, I decided to recycle the trunk. This is how it sits right now. I'm going to start the plastic welding on the fairing and other ABS parts. I will make videos of the repairs & post them so that anyone else looking to try their hand at plastic welding has at least a heads up to what to expect.
  5. Instead of trying to fit a trunk to my RSTD, I am interested in finding luggage that can create similar capacity to a Venture trunk and be attached the rear factory accessory luggage rack and the passenger sissy bar. Any real life experience with this type of product or suggestions would be appreciated. Mike
  6. Happy New year Everyone: When I first joined almost two years ago I did not have any issues posting pictures. Then just about Cody time, I tried posting pictures of my completed Harley Trunk install on my RSTD. Many of you had helpful suggestions, but I was still unable to post before Cody. I got busy and neglected to try again until this weekend. I am stuck in the house do to the winter cold and I am "ON Call" and cannot go very far. So I made more attempts at the file uploads and they finally worked. For those that would want to look around in my albums. Their are good pictures about several popular upgrades. Flanders Bars (Before and After). DMY aftermarket trunk install with Wompus Rack. Harley Trunk install on the same Wompus Rack. Bar end weight idea and my own invention of adding a spacer to the RH side to allow for a "Total Grip" when the Crusie is on. Grippy Puppy pictures. Along with pictures of several local friends and VR members that I am honored to call my FRIENDS.....Mark:)
  7. I've been thinking of how to use the approx 1 inch square SS bathroom towel rack tube for my rear light bar. I have 3 Custom Dynamic LED lights. 2 amber directioinal and 1 sequental (Back and forth) stop. Each are about 3/4 inch in with and 4 to 5 inches in length. I'd like input into drilling into the chrome trunk rack. That is from the rear of the VR looking at the back end of the chrome rack, just underneath the bottom of the trunk. I'm mainly concerned with the possibility of the chrome pealing off. I could drill three holes, one near each end and one in the middle of the towel rack and corresponding holes into the chrome trunk rack. The hole in the towel rack would need to be just large enough to put a SS screw and a screwdriver into it. With the SS towel rack mounted, I would then from the bottom of the towel rack and in the center drill another hole to accommodate 6 wires for the LED lights to be routed out of the towel rack and connected to the VR under the seat. The LED wires are about the size of telephone wires. I could feed the wires for each light in through the 3 outside holes and the three LED lights have double sided 3M tape. Each light would then mount centered covering the holes. I could not find any square plastic plugs to put into the ends, but did find some round ones. I'm pretty sure I can make it fit. The circular cap covers the end except the oh so small part of the 4 square corners, of which I have some black silicone glue. Maybe I could put some sort of metal bonding waterproof glue to keep moisture from getting under the chrome where the hole is drilled. Have any suggestions? Also I'm wondering about the drilling process into the chrome trunk rack. That is how to prevent pealing during the drilling process. I know that the location is ok, further back would be a little better, however the rear part of the trunk rack does jet out from the rear trunk bolt location and the 1 inch towel rack does bring it out that much farther. Then the observers behind me are a good distance away so it would be pretty much eye level. The turn signals providing directional signals are very eye catching and the stop lamp will be like the Sequential light like in the show Knight Rider. The center red light will sequential back and forth when the brakes are applied. All the light movements are very eye catchy and hard to ignore. The movements of the lights seems to draw the eye balls.
  8. Anyone know where one can get stainless steel or chrome channeled U shape long bracket (The U channel be 1 in X 1 in X 1 in and about the length of the rear trunk mount) where it could be mounted under the far rear of the trunk mount so the open end is to the front on the bike and the closed end is facing the rear of the bike where I could install from Custom Dynamics Sequential Amber LED Turn Signals on the ends and in the center a Custom Dynamics LED Stop Lamp. Then under the bracket I could install a couple of white lights hooked to a push switch where I can get the attention of cagers approaching dangerously. Even an L shape bracket would work. Or maybe someone has a good suggestion as to where one could mount the lights described, except drilling into the plastic trunk for an MKII.
  9. Hello again. i have another simple question that I would like to know the answer to before I buy a RSV. How simple is it to remove the rear trunk, passenger seat back and speakers and swap in the sissy bar from a RSTD. I like the trunk and speakers for long road trips....but for everyday commuting I think I would like the look of the OEM RSTD Sissy bar on the back. Is this like a 10-15 min swap or a major ordeal. I will be removing the 2 antennas since I don"t plan on using the CB and FM tuner....I will be using XM Satellite Radio. I was also going to put the rear speaker wires on quick disconnects .....so with that said....would doing this be an easy swap out. I would just buy a RSTD ...but I like the trunk for long trips and I love the fairing and stereo of the RSV. Thank you folks for your help.
  10. one of the snaps on my trunk lid broke off some time ago. i've been riding with just the one but it is wearing thin and won't stay fastened. I guess I'll have to buy a new lid. is there a place to buy one besides yamaha. I'd hate to think what that would cost. any insight on this problem is appreciated. David
  11. whats the best way to drill mounting holes for trunk rack? i finally found a rack for my 83 and trunk never had a rack and any tricks you guys have to drill the holes without cracking the trunk lid?? before i go drilling
  12. About a month ago dusty1300 offered up a couple of hardcase trunk bags for sale. He had a nice Castle that was good sized and I took it off his hands. I had a soft trunk bag for a few years and it was not very big and a pain when it was empty. His Castle was designed for a sissy bar type mount so I was able to use the frame of that to attach my smaller soft bag to the rear of the Castle. The weight of the soft bag lays on the passenger backrest so it supports itself pretty well. And I can simply tip my backrest forward to still open the trunk for access without removing anything. Still have room under the soft bag for my small bedroll. Still need to make a set of straps to tie it all on so I won't need the bungies but winter is coming and I have time to mess with it. But I took it out for a ride tonight and it sits well and stable. So thanks Tom for letting go of the Castle. Makes my traveling a little easier. Mike
  13. Does anyone know where I can find a T bar handle to put on the trunk of my trike? I've seen them on others, but can't remember who had them or where I can purchase one or two. I want to change out the lock on the trunk and would like to install a T Bar handle instead of just a lock. Any help would be appreciated! thanks Don
  14. Wife and I wanted to add a trunk / tour pack for longer trips, to our Tour Deluxe. I bought a trunk bracket from a wrecked late model Venture. First thing I found was that the posts for the latch for the detachable passenger back rest are in the location where two mounting bolts need to be for the Venture bracket. So, I drilled them out from the back, then tapped holes for bolts. The weld from the pins left me with enough metal to get about 4 threads in each hole. I mounted the bracket...then.... I had purchased an aftermarket Harley tour pack as it had the largest capacity of any of the trunks I saw on the internet. It arrived, very nice with passenger back rest. Now my problem. The bottom of the tour pack is formed to fit a different bracket. It isn't just flat. Of course, these inverse ribs don't align with the Venture bracket. Has anyone dealt with this issue?
  15. I like to know what type of aheasive is best to use to put a new Venture Emblem on the Red Reflector of the rear trunk (91 VR)?
  16. anyone seen a trunk top rack like the one in this pic? this was my gf's old bike she had to leave with the x and she wants same rack for our 83 . Ive been looking all over ebay craigss anywhere no luck. now im thinking this particular one might not even associated with yama but i dont know.
  17. 1989 VR 27,000 miles I just bought it and one of the twist hooks holding the little leather bag to the rear travel bag (trunk) is broken. I've got a replacement part. The screws go into the trunk, where the parts diagram shows there to be a "special nut". Pretty special alright because it is covered with metal frame inside the trunk that the hinges are mounted to as well as other pieces. I don't want to (probably won't) disassemble all that. Has anyone tried to unscrew this piece and get it back together? How did you manage the special nut? Is the nut spot welded to the frame or what? Thanks. Even though I just joined and this is my first post I've been trolling here a while. It's great. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10552988/IMG_0693.JPG
  18. For those of you who have trunk bags, I love to get recommendations. Thinking about a long trip and figure we. might need more storage. Looking for easy mount/dismount, rainproof and of course spacious.
  19. OK.. with the Hannigan conversion you loose the helmet locks that were mounted under the top trunk. What's everyone doing with their helmets when your fully loaded down? I had to replace my helmet from the accident last year and the new version is slightly higher on the top and will no longer fit in the top trunk either. I looked at a couple of other lock mounting systems but curious what everyone has found to work for them. pa_don
  20. For those that have the Hannigan conversion, Is it possible to move the top trunk back to the rear or second location to provide more passenger room? Mine looks to be mounted in the first or forward set of holes and looks like it will hit the small lip that is on the Hannigan kit just above the bottom trunk if the top trunk were to be moved back. pa_don
  21. Finding an original Venture Line trunk rack for my 1990 has been a fruitless endeavor. I like the look and quality of the Yamaha rack for the Second Gens., it is readily available and quality seems excellent (unlike the JCWhitney stuff). Has anyone out there in Ventureland ever installed the Yamaha Venture trunk rack intended for the newest Ventures on a First Generation, 1986-1993? If so, pictures would be great.
  22. Have an 85 VR. I just restored the trunk, is/was there some kind of strap or cable that keeps the lid from flopping all the way over onto passengers seat? I was thinking of attaching some kind of cable but thought I would ask here first in hopes to get some creative ideas on how others have done.
  23. Hello Everyone: Following in the foots steps of a few other RSTD owners. I recently finished installing a Harley Tour Pack on my 2005 RSTD. I had it painted to match the raven black color of our bike. I wired up the tail, running and brake lights last night. I was pleased with my first DMY trunk however we really wanted something a little bigger. I bolted the Harley Trunk directly to my Wompus rack and my wife was satisfied with the height. I have pictures but have not had good luck up loading them to the website the past few weeks. I have tried resizing them, but no luck yet. We are looking forward to the Cody Rally!!!
  24. (trunk..typo) Went out to wire up the trailer pigtail and do some antena work this morning, and when I removed the trunk to get at the CB I found that the left front bracket was busted off completely. The break was rusted up pretty good so it probably happened before I bought it. Anyway... Anyone have a rack left over from a trike conversion or from a trunk mod?? I can get by for the time being with just the 3 attachment points, but it would be nice to replace the whole rack. BTW its ugly rusted too, or I'd take it down to the muffler shop and have it rewelded....
  25. Last Thursday we received a set of Larry's lateast production run arm rests and I must say Becky is extremely pleased!! I feel a lot better too knowing the armrests won't swing out while we are going around curves and turns which is much more noticible on a trike where we don't lean like 2 wheelers. Installation was a breeze! The hardest part of the operation was drilling holes in the passenger grab rails. I recommend drilling a pilot hole first to make it a tad easier. Our trunk was already installed in the second set of holes so that step didn't need to be done, but in our case I discovered my trunk was not aligned properly for some reason and the passenger controls were right in front of the up tube, whereas on the other side the up tube was quite a ways over from the same point, so I am suspecting either something did not get aligned properly with the trike conversion, or my left passenger grab rail was bent out, or the right bent in, or both! Anyways I ended up drilling new holes in the bottom of my trunk to move it even further back and over about a half inch or so. I would suspect that on a normal RSV this won't be a problem! So, I am highly recommending these to anyone in the market for a set of passenger arm rests. They are high quality and rugged, typical of anything Larry builds! One nice touch is the top of the arm rest is fabric insert with the sides leather. Very nice touch in hot weather so your arms aren't stuck to the leather after a long ride! BTW I now have a set of Diamond R armrests for sale now, $100 or B/O plus shipping...
