  1. Hello guys, I know this topic has been gone over, but i just wanted to know how fast people are going to get they're mileage. Yesterday, i did a 480 round trip ride and got around 32mpg (80-85 mph freeway driving). Is this acceptable mileage? I know that i could improve that by slowing down, which i plan to do on my longer ride. Since i am still planning on doing this California to Louisiana trip in April, i want to make sure that i am getting the best possible mileage on my '83. I changed the spark plugs and wires earlier this year. I know tire pressure is important. What else do i need to do to make sure i am getting the best mileage possible? I hear people getting mileage in the 40's, is that just because they are driving 60 miles an hour? Just Curious? Thanks Al
  2. I have an oppurtunity for a cross country ride from (San Jose)California to (Baton Rouge)Louisiana in april. Do you think an '83 Venture can make that trip? My bike has no issues right now and i do have some spare parts (TCI, voltage regulator, and CMS etc.) that would join me on the trip. My bike has around 46k miles on it right now, new tires, new stator, and front progressive springs. Any Suggestions on things that i should do before the spring trip? Correction, it has 36K on it. Has anyone done this trip before? I have 14 days for my trip.

  4. Okay, here's a problem that has got me stumped. I was heading out on a trip to New Orleans and back when about a day into the trip at a gas station I noticed a problem. My 2005 RSTD wouldn't start up in gear. That is to say, I have the bike in 1st with the clutch pulled - pushed the ignition and nothing... But if I shift to Neutral and hit the ignition the bike with start, then I can shift into a gear. The trip is now over and my bike still ONLY fires up when it is in neutral. Am I going crazy here? I use to be able to start in gear with the clutch pulled. Any ideas what am I missing here?
  5. OK, I believe I am going to take a ride from central Illinois to Key West Florida. I will be going via Nashville, Atlanta, Stopping in Gainesville FL for a few days to visit my neice and a couple of friends then off to Fort Myers to see my Brother. Then down to Key West for a day or so and then back up the east side of FloridaStopping in Orlando to visit a cousin. Then the chilly ride on home. Just thought if anyone wanted to ride along on the route either for a few days or just the day let me know (or the whole trip) and I will get my trip all planned out and let you know when I will be in your area. I would also change my route some if there are people who want to ride, I will stop and pick you up along the way. Rick
  6. On my return from St Judes I stopped for gas. Went to start the bike, and when I hit the starter button, the starter just kind of started, then stopped, then the bike fired up. Next gas stop...Filled up, reset my trip odometer, pulled over for a break. Went to start the bike, and the same thing happened again. Made one more stop on the way home to add clothing...same thing again. Got home, turned off the bike, went to check the total mileage for the trip, both trip odometers read 0...and clock time was off. Next day put a voltmeter on it. 13.75 volts, turn key on, 12.5 volts...driving lights are on....hit starter button, 8.5 volts. The voltage drops seem considerably high. Tried it with the driving lights off and it didn.t make a lot of difference. Bike runiing is 14 volts so it is charging. The bike still starts fine, but am I looking at a near future problem???
  7. The wife asked about taking a ride, to see the Northern Lights. Is this possible by Motorcycle, Given the time of the year? Or is this a Cage trip?
  8. was looking into a trip that i would to take. anybody got anything on hwy 50 from Pueblo to Montrose?
  9. hi all drove the trike on it's first long distance ride since i bought it. went out to west texas, to ft.davis. total of 1,400 miles round trip. used 52.7 gallons of fuel, avg mpg for the trip was 25.19. i would say that's not bad for two up and pulling a loaded trailer. avg speed was about 70 mph. left ft.davis sunday morning around 8:am & arrived back home just after 8:00pm sunday night. 690 miles in 12 hours with a bbq break at cooper's in junction, texas. (cathie tells me she will not be doing any iron butt rides with me) my lowest mpg was 21.5 to a high of 29.7. so what i have read about our trike's mpg, i would say i'am right in the ball park. had a great weekend. reguards don c.
  10. Looks like weather is going to be perfect for everyones ride Sat. to Memphis, Tn. It may be a little cool in the morning but perfect temps for daytime riding. Hope to see a lot of you there, its a trip that will leave a lasting impression on you after you see the facility ( St. Jude Children's Research Hospital). :Venture::Venture::Venture:
  11. Heading out to Gatlinburg on the bike a little later today for our fall motorcycle trip. We have 4 couples that make this trip every spring and fall to ride the Dragon and blow off a little steam. If you're in the area and see a blue flame Venture, be sure to say howdy. You all have a great weekend.
  12. I have posted some photo's in the picture folder for you all to enjoy
  13. Hi folks, haven't been on like I would like, dont have good internet where the boat is docked. Anyway, looking at heading south from Masachusetts at the end of October, and was thinking of going by Gettysburg, have always wanted to go and it is on the way, figure I would getr there on a Friday evening, visit the park on Saturday, and then continue on my trip south to Florida on Sunday. Anybody close by that would like to get togather, would be fun to meet up with some folks, and see the the park, always more fun to do something like this with friends. This is just pre-planning, it is hard for me to plan ahead, leaving Mass with the boat on the 10th of October, and a lot depends on how the trip south goes, and then I have to get the bosses suburban south with a loaded u-haul, and then............I fly back up north and get my bike. Anybody interested let me know, and we can start planning a get-togather.
  14. Arrived in Montrose, Colorado on Monday on a business trip. My buds had 2 wheels and a set of Handlebars awaiting for me. Yep a Custom HD Fatboy . After work tomorrow, a trip in the Black Canyon in Gunnison National Park. So adding another state to my list. Today, I spent the day slinging lead with other of my colleagues in the industry, along with SF and LEO's. Tomorrow will be more and Thursday, scaling the cliffs. Adding bonus is riding with a sidearm on my side and has several comments from people saying they feel safer. Imagine that........................they don't know me all that well, LOL ! BEER30
  15. OK so some of you might remember my DAD rapid rod starting a post about me loosing 5th gear 5 miles into my trip. I planned this trip for over a year and there was no way I was cancelling. What really took me by suprise is that I ride my bike at least 6 days a weeks. We got on the road leaving Las Vegas and I felt the tranny slip for a fraction of a second as I was passing a car in overdrive. After this tiny slip the bike kept driving fine but my gut told me something was going wrong. We continued to Sacramento CA about 500 miles away and as we entered town I felt the exact same slip but it was about a quarter second longer than the first slip I felt. The feeling in my stomach got worse. We went to dinner and I mentioned the slip to the guys and everyone kinda wrote it off as nerves, but like I said I ride the bike everywhere so I am pretty in tune with it at all times. I didnt get much sleep that night because this was bothering me so much. The next morning as we got on the freeway and I shifted into 5th....NADA. Was like I shifted into neutral. I thought the trip was over. Contacted my dad and he started doing research and said that as long as I stayed under 75 the bike would be fine until I got home. Well we rode 3,560 miles into Canada VIA the pacific coast. Rode the border and dropped into Glacier national park. Made it home with absolutely no problems. My bike had been averaging 32 mpg but on this trip I actually averaged 39mpg with a high of 44mpg????curious. now the task of finding out what went wrong. I am going to start ripping the bike apart and any advice would greatly be appreciated. The bike is a 2003 venture with 61000 miles on it and I ride it like a grandpa LOL very rarely do I push it hard so the tranny issue is puzzling. Thanks everyone.
  16. Last fall I had joined this site to get help with a problem and learn more about my new to me 2004 RSV. I had a problem with my RSV stumbling under a load and V7Goose gave me great advice on cleaning the carburetors and synchronizing the carburetors. I thought I had things working well, so I set out on a 3700 mile trip. On my way out things seemed good but after a couple days the problem returned. The engine vibrates badly under a load. This problem comes and goes; sometimes it would run ok and then others very bad. Most of my trip was at higher altitude and I thought maybe my problem was associated with that but it still did it on the way home. It acted worse in the heat but sometimes it would run ok in the heat. I ran in some rain and hail but most of the trip was dry. In 4th gear at 60mph it will still vibrate and in 5th gear at 70mph it vibrates if I ask for power. At 75mph trying to climb a slight grade on the expressway it struggles to maintain speed. This is a list of what I have done before the trip. 1) Removed carbs and cleaned 2) New spark plugs – twice 3) New spark plug caps – NGK only 5K ohms 4) Carb sync 5) Sea foam through tank. 6) New K&N air filters 7) New fuel filter If someone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. I really do like this bike, but this power plant I am unsure about. I may have never had it running good as I have never been impressed with the power, but my last bike was a GL1500 and that is what I am comparing it to. If I could just get this thing to run smooth I could deal with the fact it is less powerful than my old GL. Thanks in advance
  17. Morning, We are planning a fall(late October) trip to the Branson/ Harrison Arkansas area. We will be staying at the Silver Leaf Holiday Hill Resort for a week. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the weather to expect and if the "colors" are at their peak at this time. We will also want to tour the Harrison area. We have a "Motorcycle Riding Guide of the Ozarks" brochure and it looks like a great area guide. I would appreciate any pointers on "must see" places and kinda unique places to eat and where not to go. Always wanted to ride in that area and now have a chance. Thanks Reno
  18. hello everyone taking a test ride here my name is Vincent Owen i live in sw Ar. finally got another bike after many years 07RSMV replacing a Vstar 1100 kids are gone an were ready to try our first long distance trip to eastern Tenn. It was suggested that i post questions here about any suggestions on making our trip pleasant. We have seven days to travel an limited space as you all are aware of. Just wondering whats a reasonable distance to travel a day and not be wore out I know that will vary from person to person. Suggestions on packing etc. Also any great reasonable places to stay in the Gatlinburg an Pigeon Forge area. Anything a newbie tourer might need to know. Experience is the best teacher but often has the hardest lessons
  19. what are the recommendations for spare fuel pump? thinking about taking a trip. what other spare parts would you recommend?
  20. Just returned home from our weekend camping trip with the new-to-us tent trailer. Had to stick a plug in a nailhole in the rear tire just before we left. Fairly new Dunlop Elite 3 (appx 4500 miles on it). Checked the tire regularly during the trip and found it to be very hot after an hour or so riding. So hot in fact that I could not hold my hand on it very long and the wheel was even hotter. Running 39 lbs cold in the tire. The front tire was warm but not too warm and the trailer tires were about the same. I guess I had about 40lbs weight on the tongue and a light load on the bike. We did the whole trip (appx 800 kilometers) without issue but the tire was still quite hot each time I checked it. BTW, I have no idea how hot the tire might have been before this trip riding without the trailer. Any thoughts on this guys??
  21. Getting everything ready for our trip with the Warriors Watch Riders to PA for the 9/11 memorial ride and services at the Gardens of Reflection in Bucks County. 5 bikes making the trip from GA with a support vehicle and trailer in tow. Leaving the 8th and returning the 13th, with stops in the Harrisonburg VA area both up and back. Not attempting to get into DC, NYC or Shankesville this trip, as they will be crazy crowded. We'll make that pilgrimage some other time. The spouse of the pilot of Flight 93 will be attending this service with us, as she did two years ago when the Gardens were dedicated. Hopefully the weather cooperates this year (it was a monsoon in '09!), but either way, it's going to be a great ride with some great folks. Wherever you go and whatever you are doing on 9/11 this year, please ride safe, and thank you for honoring the heroes and victims of this tragic day. God bless America.....
  22. Finally paid the $12 and here I am looking for advice on a dream that I had when I purchased my 83 Venture oh so many years ago. I am planning on doing Route 66 this spring and am in the process of getting the Venture in tip top shape, new Wheel bearings, hoses, filters, carb cleaning and the like. Has anyone done Route 66 and can offer any advice? With 40K miles on the Venture I am confident that she will make the trip. I guess I'm looking for some real life experience from any other long distance touring riders. way back when BC (before Children) my wife and I did the New York to Florida trip and a couple of NY to North Carolina trips, so we have some touring experience. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  23. Here's my pics of the ride. My husband hid the camera for much of the trip, was very good meeting everyone. Hope to get out more. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v281/GAWildKat/Vogel%202011/#!cpZZ3QQtppZZ28
  24. Here is a few pics of how I got two motorcycles to Georgia. I did have a fatality on the way that made for a very long trip at about the 4 hour mark of a 11 hour ride my cigarett lighter decided to eject from the handlebar but the trip went on.I made it to Atlanta without a ticket or other problem so I consider myself lucky. And Yes I will do the same thing again if the need arises. Jeff
  25. My wife and I took our first trip on the RSV. Bought it last fall after many years of old wings. We headed to western MI and up the coast. Took B15 which was beautiful ride connecting with M22 to Traverse City. The next morning we headed up the Old Mission Peninsula and then around the Leelanau Peninsula on M22 cricling back through TC and on up through Charlevoix onto Petoskey. Took 119 the "Tunnel of Trees" this morning and then back to southern Mi. What a great trip on the bike. Had done some of this before with the car. I had already put 7,000 miles on the bike (140 miles round trip to work) but this was our first long ride together. What a great, comfortable ride. I can say that I am tired but not sore at all. Actually, i think it is more comfortable than the car. Even with my rear shock which i think is shot. Comfortable enough for the wife to fall asleep several times.
