  1. 1988 Venture Royale. Ordered three sets of brake pads for the Venture, from an eBay dealer. Used "Buy-it-Now" and the price was good. Shipping was prompt. These were "no-name" pads, intended for the 86-93 Ventures. When I opened the package, I noticed these generic pads are labeled "FA160". I checked out the application chart for FA160 pads, and it shows that they fit other Yamaha models, mostly sport bikes. I know the Venture takes FA123 pads all around. The FA160's are similar to the FA123's, except for the top. The holes line up with each other, they have the same width -- only difference that I could tell is the squared-out top ends. Has anyone ever used FA160 pads on his Venture? If so, any problems? I would try to install them and see, but my VR is at the independent shop getting its annual checking over. I want to know if I should arrange to return these pads, or keep them and use them. Any ideas? Nick Diaz Middletown, MD
  2. My new Clearview windshield (Medium Light Grey with vent) arrived on Monday. I installed the shield on Tuesday morning in less than 20 minutes... very straightforward and easy, even for one who is mechanically challenged. The grey shield on my grey 2008 Venture looks great. I went for a ride, and had no complaints from my passenger. There was no noticeable increase in wind buffeting even at speeds over 100 kph. I noticed a little more wind, which is what I wanted. At 5 ft 11 inches, I am still looking through the top few inches of the shield, however. I was hoping to be able to see over the top. I may shorten the shield by four inches or so. The Clearview shield is much more solid than the stock shield. The shield I purchased was advertised as having “very slight scratches”. I will have to take a very much closer look, as I have not spotted them yet!
  3. when replacing the air filters, does any one just remove the top cowling screw and slightly bend the top of cowling to gain access to the screws and bolts to get to filters?? read online this is one way to do it ? seems like K&N is to way to go for filters?!
  4. To those who have had both the corbin dual tourer seat and the Yamaha pillow top seats....how they compare? I realize seat choice is all kind of/sort of a personal preference.....just wondering how many pillow top users have switched to the corbin and really prefer it that way? gunk:smile5:
  5. a pillow top passenger seat for a RSV must be in excellant condition blk. Anyone have one PM me. Thanks star4772
  6. I have recently realized that most folks don't know what side their biscuit is buttered on. To prove my point I'm launching this enquirery. What side is your biscuit buttered on and why. Do you butter your biscuit on the top, the bottom of the top, the top of the bottom or the bottom and why? Enquiring minds want to know.
  7. Good Afternoon All, How much play should the top rear shock bolt have in it? I decided to inspect the swing-arm assembly before I start to put her back together, and discovered play when I raise the swing-arm up and down. Is there a bushing in there that can be worn out already, or is this normal. I would guess it is probably somewhere between 1/32nd and 1/16th of an inch, and appears to be concentrated on the top rear shock connection. Have any of you experienced this?
  8. I just returned from a 2000 mi trip on my trusty 1989 Venture. I was close to Canada so the mornings were chilly! Each morning when I would get to the bike there would be a spot, about the size of a small plate, of antifreeze under the right side of the motorcyle. I would top off the expansion tank and about 5 minutes later the leaking stopped and would not appear until the next morning. Now I am back in the Midwest and it has not leaked a drop since I returned. Any ideas?
  9. I have a Reese Backpacker trailer and the original prop for the top was missing when I bought it I am trying to find some sort of prop for the top. I can only put it on the front so it has to be sturdy I thought about the gas filled ones like on my truck top but it is not strong enough for just one, anyone have an idea I have called all the trailer stores around me and no one has anything. I will make a prop out of wood but I would rather have something built in. Tom
  10. I found this thread about the correct positioning of the coolant bypass valve with a couple of images of the valve that snaggletooth posted (thanks snaggletooth) and thought I would check mine since I checked the fan already and it's working. I found that my valve needs to be turned a little further to be fully in the off position, but what I also saw was that there is no plug in the small holes on the top and left of the valve and I know there never have been since I've owned the bike any way, 10 years or so. The valve in the other thread shows a screw plugging the left hole but I can't see the top. Also, I've only drained the coolant in this thing twice in the past 7 or 8 years and I drained the old coolant by pulling the hose off the top of this valve. Should I pull the bypass valve to drain old coolant, and how does the valve come out of the valve-body for draining? Turning the valve always makes me nervous. It's hard to turn and really creaks and I'm always afraid of breaking it.
  11. I know this isn't bike related but you're a large family to throw the question out to. My wife and I are looking at a top of the line Whirlpool Duet front load washer/dryer set. The price is right. I've looked at online review sites and see a mixed bag of opinions. I see the same from other manufacturers reviews. So, I'm looking for input from real people with first hand knowledge. I can get the top of the line set for about $1300 which is about $800 less than Lowes price. Should I look elsewhere? Does Whirlpool make a decent set? Thanks, Dennis
  12. It's time for an update on my Beast: Bodywork progress is slow. Between the 100 degree daytime temperatures :scorched:and the lack of success getting factory pin-striping off, not much forward movement has occurred in the past couple of weeks. Anyone have a sure-fire way to get these stinking decals/pinstripes off , please let me know. I have peeled off the top layer using a pro heat gun. The problem is the adhesive left behind. It gums up sandpaper, gasoline will not budge the stuff, and a grinder takes off too much material. I decided to make changes that will make the bike look more post 2000 and not look like 1985. I am removing or modifying a lot stuff. At this time my color choice is gun-metal gray. I had already removed the front fender bumper and mud-flap. I like a "smoother" look and next removed rear fender mud flap. Then I bobbed the rear fender. The picture below shows how the rear of the bike is developing. You can also see how I am painting the aluminum seals around the saddlebags. I have also removed the bumper and reflector off of the top box and filled 17 holes with fiberglass! Thanks for looking in on my Beast. More to come . . .
  13. 2005 rsv. while out for a ride today with old goat we got out on the highway he got out and went like hell. must say his bike is running better thanks to all of you pepoles help. well i started hitting gears real fast and thought i had one more gear pulled in the clutch and noticed i was in top gear let off and just kept on the gas. no problem then. but when we went into town and i was in 2nd gear oldgoat said he thought he heard a chirp or whine comming from somewhere ? in top gear he said at 60 mph it wasent so bad? did i mess up the clutch?
  14. G'day All I'm replacing the oil in the front forks of my '83 VR after fitting new seals on the anti-dives. I have progressives. What oil level do I use ? 5 inches from the top or 5 and a half inches ? Jim O'D...........
  15. Help, I changed the oil and used a ST7317 filter a little longer. The question is where in the sight glass do you fill it to? The top line or the middle between the two. Heading out to the beach this morning about a 400 mile ride and do no want to run it too low. I am just above the middle between the lines at 3 qts. The book calls for 3.9 with stock filter change. I started it and then let it set for about 4 minutes before I checked it. I put 3.5 qts in and there was not even a air bubble in the window so I sucked some out. Do I fill it to the top line? Thanks for you help. I,ll go check the tire while I wait for a reply.

  17. A friend of mine is looking for a Venture Pillow top PASSENGER Seat..... Contact me if you have one.....
  18. I owned an '83 Venture Royale from 83 to 90. It was top heavy but manageable with care. I am looking at a 99 and 2000 MM and I understand they are top heavy also. How do the two bikes compare in this important handling situation? Thanks in advance for your replies...
  19. Has anyone vented the filler tube by the gas cap on a 1st gen? It takes a long time to get that sucker full to the top. I've seen the 2nd gen pics but no 1st. 83' VR Brent.
  20. I have been on-line all over and contacted numerous salvage yards with no luck. If someone runs across some pillow top seats, would you please send me a personal message with the info. I'm not too good on following these threads. Thanks in advance for any help I receive from everyone. chuck
  21. I am trying to do the steering head adjustment but I cannot for the life of me get that top nut loose. I've tried channel locks, even clamped on locking pliers and hammered the end, tried putting a pipe on the end .... all no go. That is one tight nut. Any suggestions .... I dont have a wrench big enough for the head, and the darn space is so small. I presume it isnt a reverse thread and its "lefty lucy". Aaaargh!
  22. Does anyone have a wrap around passenger backrest pillow top style? I saw the one for sale by Yamaha and Corbin but it is not the right finish. I would like to purchase one but I can not find the right style for my 05 RSV. Does anyone have any idea where I could buy one? Gaetan
  23. Last couple Items I have had shipped to my residence in Canada are being shipped from a Canadian address in Mississauga. I get a COD charge on top of the crazy shipping charges we normally have to pay on US shipped items. This hasn't been my experience over the last years. This is something new. Most Items I have ordered never have any charges...$10 COD on top of the $20 for shipping on a $64 item...no more! I'm done with that crowd!
  24. Well inspired by Sylvester I decided to get some pillow top seats for my MM. I just went to the auto parts store and picked up some can spray paint that was close in color to the stock MM seats. The color is a little lighter but not much. If I had it to do over again I would take Sylvester's advise and have the color I want made up at a auto paint supplier and I would use a spray gun. It would probably be cheaper. The stuff I used was made to cover plastic and auto seat vinyls. It coats it well but you need to make sure that the vinyl is clean. I don't know how well this stuff will work over time but for now it seems to stick pretty well and is very pliable. I like the pillow top seat very well and this is an effort to put them on my MM. If this doesn't hold up well then I'll bite the bullet and find a reputable upholstery shop around here and have them recovered. Anyway here are a few pic's of my MM.
  25. I'm planning on getting a 1986-1993 Venture.I used to ride a 2005 HD road king.Does anyone know how they would compare top heavy wise.I was use to the road king but had to be careful when riding double and stopping on steep inclines. Also how about the handling.I want a bike that is happy in the mountain curves.
