  1. I have a new Kenwood TK-3130 handheld radio. I just bought it about three months ago for my other system. The problem now is I have this radio but no way to use it on my Venture. Anyone have any ideas on how to integrate this into the Venture system. I would like to use it because all of our riders have the same. Thanks http://www.kenwoodusa.com/Communications/Business_Radio/ProTalk®/TK-3130
  2. OK folks...if you look at my avatar and other information on this post, you will see a note that says "VenturRider Meets Attended". I received a request from Jeff and Beer30 asking if I could add something like the "Awards" system to show how many eat and meets, rallies, maintenance days, etc. that a member has attended. This is a far cry from what they asked for but is the best I can do at this moment. I will try, in the future, to come up with something closer to what they really wanted. At any rate, this will work on the honor system. All you need to do is click on UserCP and then Edit Profile. At the very bottom of the page you will find a box to select how many VentureRider meets and eats, rallies, maintenance days you have showed up for. I just put 20 in there for now but can increase it if and when I need to. Heck, some of you may have already made more than 20. If so, just let me know. Sorry Jeff and Beer, but this will have to do for now and takes the pressure off me and/or the moderators for adding this info. I will try to make it fancier some time soon.
  3. Mine is an 87 VR but it seems both models are rated for about the same alternator output so I put this in General Tech. I read all the varying opinions about how much extra the system can handle and finally just bought some cheap $20 driving lights with 55W H3 bulbs and installed them. Made some cool little brackets to mount them on the forks by the brakes like you see on some BMW's. I powered them with a relay off the battery. The trigger side of the relay comes off the headlight circuit, before the dimmer switch, and goes thru a toggle switch. Consequently, I can turn the lights on or off with either headlight beam, and they go off with the headlight when starting the engine. After riding this way for a couple weeks, I have a few conclusions. 1) I leave them on in the daytime for visibility to others. 2) I can't leave them on in traffic at night because they have absolutely no beam control and are blinding to others. 3) The relay system works perfectly. 4) Extra light is nice. 5) Cheap lights have kind of a crude beam pattern. Nicer ones would probably be better. 6) The charging system seems fully up to the task of the additional 110W. I've had no battery problems and the volt meter always reads close to 14 volts as long as the engine is above ~2000 rpm. I have no other extra loads on the system. I will soon install grip heaters, which are only a couple amps (24W). Just to keep load down, I think I'll install LED's on the tail and running lights which will save 7W x 4 = 28W. Does anybody have any clue what the ignition system draws? Jeremy
  4. I bought 6 weeks a go a 2003 Midnight Venture with 4000 miles. When I ride in the city, I noticed that it starts popping at regular interval through the exhaust system when I close the gas throttle…I know the original owner removed the exhaust baffles and the bike sounds great .. but I hate that regular popping through the exhaust system. Is there anything that I can do ?
  5. OK I going to install a 86 OEM Yamaha CB system in my 83 Standard. I installed the AM/FM system last year so that part is done. I bought a CB & Radio package deal at a garage sale last weekend. Came with CB - Antenna splitter - cables - noise filter -AM/FM Cassette radio unit - Amp unit - driver head set JM -driver&passenger CB remotes - radio remote - two speakers . Items missing so far that I know of is CB holding tray CB antenna I did some reading on the forum so that should help me some on hot wiring the CB. I have a few Q?s #1 driver intercom lead cable has a pigtail (3 wire) about midway down the cable what does it plug into? #2 Driver & Passenger CB remotes do they plug into the wiring harness?if so does anybody have a way for me to hook these up for a standard system?Might be better off for me to buy a wiring harness from a 83 royal? #3 5 pin cable from CB to amp system will I be able to hear the CB in my headset or speakers or both? #4 Will I be able to talk on the CB with my head set if so what do I key to make CB work?do not know if I have the complete system or not? Sorry for the Q's and being a pain, but I'm wanting to hook up the CB system for next years Eureka Springs meet. I like to know what I'm getting into before I start tearing the bike apart and know some on how this CB unit works. Thanks for all replys buddy Buddy

    AIS?

What is the AIS system, and what does it do?
  7. I just bought a 1986 Venture and it has no pressure on the clutch lever - 0. Fluid reservor is full. Master cyl bad? How do I bleed the system? Thanks
  8. I've been looking at Motolights over the weekend, and I got's the hots to put a set on my RSV! Anybody running Motolights (stock 35W version) along with the OEM passing lights? I'm thinking my charging system might be challenged but want to hear what others may have to say. I make it out to be an added 5 or 6 amps to add the Motolights. Smokee
  9. I'm wiring my 2003 venture for a trailer plug. I'm using a Hoppy #48915 which is supposed to convert independant signal/brake light, to the common combined system. I ran 4 relay's so I didn't stress the system. The problem is, all I get on the plug is tail lights, no signals or brakes. I tracked all five wires back, and even right before they go into the converter they all work fine. On the other side of the coverter/plug, of the 4 wires, only the tail light has power. Did I get a bad converter? I've read where people have used Hoppy #48845, and I don't see anything different with what I have other than the converter is in the plug and not inline. Where an I going wrong:confused24:? Thanks Steve
  10. My '86" sound system was slowly going down hill. I know they're a lot of tech fixes and upgrades out there. but I'm sound system impaired, so here is a great cheap upgrade. Pull the fairing signal covers off and remove the stock speakers, replace with Wal-Mart replacement upgrades, about $30 bucks, buy a cassette tape adapter $6 bucks(Wal-Mart with the cord adapter.) borrow your kids IPOD(after they put your music on a playlist), plug it in ,stick it in the leather side pocket and WOW what a great sound, works even in a high wind..
  11. As part of trying to get rid of the off idle skip on my 83, I removed the hoses and plugged the ports on the YICS system. The bike runs so much smoother and I can not tell any significant difference in power, so what did the YICS system actually do? I noticed on the 86 engine that the ports are not even machined for a tube for the hose. RandyA
  12. What brand of intercom system do i need to buy to hook up to the system on my bike. I know that the voyager has a different pin set up than say a goldwing. Im looking for helmets that already have the system or something that i can install in the helmet. Sorry for the new guy questions but i got the fever:banana:
  13. Hi, I need to consult with an engine expert for my '84 standard, have we got any in the house? I have some engine misfiring going on. It has just started again today but late last year I had it happen at about the same time my stator coil failed. I fixed the stator got back full system volts and all had been good, till today. I figured the misfires were caused by a CDI not getting full volts. When it happens, I feel a slight drop in power in the seat of my pants and I see a quick dip on the tach. I think I read somewhere that cyl #2 is the one that the tach signal is derrived from. Have I got this right? Can I take this as a clue that cyl #2 is my offender? The other clue is that this seems to happen as the engine is warming up. Once I have gone a few miles, the misfires seem to go away. This makes me think it might be a connection issue somewhere that makes better contact as things warm up. My question of course is where to start looking? I fear that this might be a CDI problem. I understand there is someone around who rebuilds / repairs them. Who is that and what does "rebuild / repair" actually mean? Just in case and for diagnostic purposes, I have just bought a CDI on ebay. Might be useful. BTW, I am still loosing a little coolant too and its still a mystery where its going. Could be a head gasket but I am not convinced. I suspect the crankcase vent system myself. She just rolled over 42,600 miles today. I know it sounds like she has a lot of problems but she runs great for the mostpart and I really like the old gal. I don't have much $ invested and I like to do the work myself so even if I have to take her to pieces & put her back together again, its OK by me if I can make the fix. I'd like to figure it all out first before I go in. So, bring on the sage advice. Thanks, Brian H.
  14. Has anybody ever tried to pipe the output from an MP3 Player through the audio system of the Venture? I would think that you might be able to feed the output from the MP3 Player into the input from the cassette player. Just imagine a few hundred of your favorite songs, playing through the speakers of the Venture, without fumbling for cassettes. I look forward to hearing from anybody with Thoughts or Suggestions about this idea. Thanks, Dean
  15. Hi Guys: I think I know the answer to this already, BUT -- I have an '84 Venture that has sat for a while. I DID take off, disassemble and clean as best I could, all 4 carbs. She's back together now, starts right up, but will only run with the choke left on. I have added Sea Foam to the tank and have been running it in hopes that it will work its way through the system and eventually clean out whatever I didn't get. What are my chances that WILL happen? Or if anyone has any other tricks that might work, please chime in. Thanks in advance.
  16. Reverse Brake Bleeding Do it backwards like the Pros do! If conventional brake bleeding of the front brakes is leaving you with less hair and more wrinkles between the eybrows, try doing it backwards, like the professionals do!! If you have opened the system by changing brake lines or working on the calipers or the reservoir, this may be the only way to completely rid the system of air. Pro shops use a pressurized or "Bladder" setup to simply fill the system from the bottom up, chasing the air upwards, out the top, then some of the fluid is drawn back out or pumped back out to eliminate any residual air that may be pocketed in any upper recesses of the caliper. With a few dollars and a trip to your local hardware store and kitchen, you can build your own "Gravity Bleed" system and do the job right the first time and be finished in an hour, instead of a week!! Think of this system as a medical "I.V." system, just like the one they give you blood or fluids with. You fill a reservoir with fluid, attach it to the caliper bleeder valve (nipple), then either let gravity do the work, or lightly apply squeeze pressure by hand. Very simple, and extremely effective. Some items you will need: 1.) A typical 16 or 20 oz water bottle, clean and dry. 2.) A 3/16" Brass Hose Barb from the hardware store (with 1/8" pipe threads on the back end). 3.) A 1/2" brass Lamp base nut (listed with 1/8" ISP threads (to secure the hose barb with.) 4.) Two used banjo crush washers (these are a perfect size, but other washers will work. 5.) 6 feet of 3/16" inside diameter clear tubing. 6.) (Optional) 1/4" outside brass needle valve. 7.) A roll of Duct tape and a Coat Hangar or rope for suspending the bottle. 8.) Turkey baster (for removing excess fluid from reservoir. 9.) Some Teflon plumber's tape for sealing the bleeder valve threads. http://www.moccsplace.com/images/brakes/bleeder/supplies.jpg Drill a hole in the cap of the water bottle and attach the hose barb to the cap, using the brass lamp nut and the two used banjo washers. wrap a loop of duct tape over the bottom of the bottle so you will have something to hang it upside down by. http://www.moccsplace.com/images/brakes/bleeder/cap.jpghttp://www.moccsplace.com/images/brakes/bleeder/bottle.jpg Pour in the brake fluid. Attach the clear tubing to the cap. (I used a small needle valve near the free end of the hose just to make things work a little cleaner, since I had to bleed both sides of my dual disc system, but the needle valve is not necessary.) Remove the caliper bleeder nipple, clean its threads, and then wrap a short length of Teflon tape around the threads to help seal it from air entry or fluid leakage during the process, then reinstall the nipple to the caliper. http://www.moccsplace.com/images/brakes/bleeder/teflon1.jpg http://www.moccsplace.com/images/brakes/bleeder/teflon2.jpg First of all, use common sense when setting up to bleed. Air migrates upward in a liquid system, so tilt your handlebars, turn your handlebars, and or reposition your master cylinder so that the banjo fitting is BELOW the lowest point of the reservoir. Now, after removing the reservoir cap, loosen the caliper bleeder valve to open it, and attach the free end of the clear tubing to it. It helps to let the clear tubing fill up with fluid right to the end before attaching to the bleeder valve, just to reduce the introduction of air into the brake system. Raise and secure the upside down bottle to a level just above the reservoir, then take a small pointed punch or other device and poke a small "breather" hole in the bottom of the bottle (which is now the high end), so it can draw in air as the fluid flows downward. Make sure that the clear tubing makes a constant uphill path to the bottle so that air in the tubing will work its way to the top and into the bottle. http://www.moccsplace.com/images/brakes/bleeder/ivbottle.jpg http://www.moccsplace.com/images/brakes/bleeder/setup.jpg You can help and speed the process by taking the bottle in your hand and while holding your thumb over the breather hole, squeeze the bottle gently, and watch the reservoir as it fills. You can also "suck" fluid back through by moving your thumb off the hole, then squeezing the bottle to remove its air content, then hold your thumb over the hole and manipulate the bottle to draw fluid back in with a slight vacuum pressure When the system is initially filled with fluid, let it sit undisturbed for 15 minutes, then there will be three air bubbles left in the system. One small one just below each bleeder nipple at the calipers, and one big one at the master cylinder banjo fitting. Now, with the system full, you can "tickle" that bubble out of the banjo by LIGHTLY squeezing the lever only a SLIGHT amount (may 1/4"). Just "wiggle" the lever in and out at the very outward portion of its travel, and it will draw that bubble upward. If you fully squeeze the lever, or squeeze it hard, you are forcing that banjo bubble down into the brake line, and it has to start climing back up all over again. When you can't "tickle" any more air through the tiny orifice in the reservoir, reverse sqeeze some more fluid through the system with the bottle, and watch for any new bubbles. If you don't get any new ones, and can't "tickle" any more out from the top, then crack open the caliper bleeder and SLOWLY bleed any remaining caliper air out from the bottom conventionally. Finish off the other caliper and test the system. Dual Disc Notes: If your system consists of dual brake discs and calipers, work the left caliper first, until fluid begins to reach the reservoir, then swap over and work the right, until all air is evacuated, then finally, go back and lever bleed the left again to make certain there is no air left in the caliper itself.
  17. Here are a couple of charts that will be helpful for troubleshooting your charging system. Don, you may want to move to the tech section. Chargingfault.pdf
  18. Has anyone found a good bike to bike radio system to use while riding with other bikes. Just did a 5 day trip all over the smokies and N.Ga mts and realized a good radio system would have been nice to communicate while riding at times. Would appreciate any input on this. 19. Just wanted to let you know that tonight on Woot! they have a Whistler WPGX-635 GPS Nav System for $219.99 + $5.00 S&H. for those of you not familiar with Woot, they go under a system of One Day, One Deal. they sell one item per day. when it's sold out, that's it until the next day and it changes every night at Midnight CST. Anyhow, just thought ya'll would like to know.
  20. I just got a new RSV but still want to wear full face helmets.. Got the wife and myself each new Shoei RF1000 helmets.. Then ordered two J&M fullface headsets to fit the bike's intercom system, but the speakers and mic are thicker than the headsets from my old audioboss system. The instructions in the headsets say to cut holes in the styrofoam liner of the helmet for the speakers and mic. I'm not to sure about doing this. Has anyone done this on an RF1000? OR know of anyone that does J&M headset installs, quick neat and professionally, for not too much, in North or Central Florida? J&M says you can send the helmet to them and they will do it, for a nominal fee, but I'd rather not ship the helmets off for who knows how long.
  21. Hi Folks, as i have read, there are some Guys, which might be interested in passing the damned Carb-Stuff out and go for a Fuel Injection System. As the Carbs and Strakes are not that big different on a Venture, it will mechanically fit and work properly on all the Ventures you use. Just the Mapping should be different, because of the different Valve-Sizes and other Camshafts. I know this Guy, which has an Injection-System developed and fitted to several Vmaxxes, from 1200 cc Stock-Engine up to his 1670 cc Monstermax. Works also on a 1200cc Engine with a Blower... As i heard these Days, they now have also a done Deal with a Distributor in the States .... Here's the Link to the EFI in the States http://wildbros.com/EFI.html If have worked on that System at a Friends Max, was a quite impressive Moment. I will upgrade my Max next Winter. As i'm not only seeking for the Gain of Power, i will not use the advertised Fuel Computer, instead i will go for the Full Motor Management, which comes which Lambda-Control and Regulation of the Igniton-System. This System runs already on a Development-Bike with really great Performance. If you are a "Save the Planet" Type, you also can mount some Catalytic Converters and run the Bike in perfect EPA-Conditions. It's just for your Information, i'm not related in any Ways to the People who are doing that Business.
  22. Hello, Just bought a 2007 RSTD and I love it. However maybe I should have bought the 2007 RSV cause I really want the Rider/Passenger Intercom and the CB system. Does anyone know of an aftermarket system that is seemless in that it looks great, works well and would be able to communicate with my fellow RSV riders. Thanks, PAUL
  23. Just in case somebody has some extra money to spend, Kennedy makes a Bluetooth interface to connect cellphones, GPS etc. wirelessly to your standard 5-pin DIN intercom system. Here is a link for a possible source, options should fit 1st and 2nd Gen bikes: http://www.cyclegadgets.com/Products/KT/detail.asp?SET=CELLBT&3=KT-CELLBT-DEV-TTR Not cheap, but interesting... Klaus
