2. I was wondering if someone has any experience with a "racing engine" problem on a first gen Venture. Mine will start running at a higher RPM (about 1500) after a short time in city traffic. It doesn't seem to be stuck cables. The throttle retracts all the way and I can bring it under control at a stop by holding the brake and feathering the clutch in first gear - 1 or 2 times brings it back down to normal. The real problem is any longer diving at highway speeds. After an hour at highway speed the engine will run at 3k when I stop. The clutch method above works but as soon as I let it go, the engine starts climbing to about 3k. It doesn't jump up to 3k but I sure wouldn't call it a creep either. Anyone have any ideas? MikeC
3. I am getting a few guys together for a ride tomorrow Oct 11, meeting at "Stop Fifty" truck stop which is on the south side of the QEW at Fifty road in Winona..(just past Stoney Creek).. We are meeting there for breakfast at 9 am, then heading out for a good ride. Anybody is welcome to come along.. I will check this thread tonight in case of any questions..or if any changes happen.. Brian.

Quick Stop

I've had my Action Cam since June and I've been using it to make videos while riding. I have Gigabytes of video. However, I really do not know how to process the videos and publish them. So I am learning iMovie (on the Mac) and Youtube. (And learn how to post videos here also.) This is the first movie clip I've published. I was recording my commute to work on I-94 West bound between St. Paul and Minneapolis when a car cuts off a FedEx truck. The truck has to quick stop which forces me to quick stop and lock up my rear brake. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRN-xDPeMcI]YouTube - Quick Stop - Yamaha Royal Star Venture[/ame] If this works I will be processing other videos including rides from Pork in the Pines and our trip to Mackinaw City, MI including crossing the Mighty Mac for the first time and then crossing it while riding on the metal grates the whole way due to the outside lanes being closed. Fun! Cheers,
5. WOW I just came back from Napa here in Windsor and I bought a can of Seafoam. It cost me $11.90 plus taxes (cdn) I complained about the price to the counter clerk and he said that everyone says the same. I told him I could get it in Detroit for $6.99 to $7.99 a can. I'll stock up there next time. Then I was following someone's post about using Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak to stop a front fork leak and that was $13.21 plus taxes for a small bottle. I sure hope it stops my small leak. What a ripoff it is in Canada. DonB
6. New here, haven't got the picture thing worked out how I want but I am not good with computers..they hate me. We work our way down from northwest Cincinnati to RT52 that follows the Ohio River, since RT32 in OH and the AA highway in KY have opened this road is now a great road with very little traffic other than locals. Very scenic.Well we make our first "p" stop at Point Pleasant at the rest area and home of Grant's birth place...nice little stop We are on a XS 1100 Yamaha and 750 Honda.A little museum is across the street to see Grant's early years,we were a bit early so it wasn't open. As we travel east on 52 we stop at Meldahl Dam,no barges going thru at this time,we were fenced off from getting any closer than the parking lot, maybe 9/11 had something to do with this, had a little obervation tower we used to go up in. Back on 52 we ride along some nice road till we drop of to pick up Boudes Ferry to take us to KY... To cross over it was $2 a bike,it must be run by KY cause if OH ran it there would be a tweleve foot high fence on it to keep you from falling off. What is really cool about this ferry is the engine house,he is facing forward as he pulls up and when ready to go back the whole engine house turns around so the actual ferry never turns...neat as shti. So we are now in Augusta KY,ya gotta visit this old river town, sit by the river or just walk around, put it on your list. We find RT8 and it is empty of traffic, follows the river,smooth,scenic....it don't get any better. As we travel RT8 we miss the Rankin House in Ripley OH,it sits high above the river and has a great view of the Ohio River on a bend. We hit Maysville KY and stop to see the flood wall and walk around on the river side, neat town..it is growing and why did we want to see the flood wall? Size perspective..... Well we cross back into Ohio and on RT 52 again,as we keep travelling east we pass one of my favorite state parks,Shawnee State Park, the lodge is great and the area is beautiful, the trails I am told are used to get in shape for those who plan on hiking the Appalichian trail. We finally make it to Portsmouth to see the flood walls,1/4 mile long and depicts the history of the area and on the river side is a park and you can just enjoy the river. From there our final goal was Hocking Hills State Park to meet up with a few Harley riders, some great roads getting there,ya can't go wrong in OHIO.We spent the next day riding around the area, fantastic place to visit, easy walking trails..but would stay away from the weekends First report, click on the pics for a bigger picture..I hate computers...This trip was last October and will try to make it again this year as I had a great time. Bill XS1100 Yamaha..It's Evil, Wicked,Mean And Nasty.....
7. I went on a ride to day 7:30AM about 48 degree's all of a sudden a loud whine, Puled in clutch still whine. Slowed down the bike so did the whine just be for complete stop the whine stop. Stared to go again no whine then about 20 miles the whine returned same as before pulled in clutch still whine just before stop it quit. Did this three times in 50 miles. Sound like from the u joint or drive shaft, I greased the final drive and the drive shaft when I put new tire on 11,000 miles ago. Went 150 Miles never happened again, I have a new tire to put on the rear so while it was apart maybe I can fix this if I new what it might be. Thanks, Dale
8. Just got word today that 29 Dreams the premier motorcycle resort near Birmingham AL will be closing for good on November 9th. For all of us close by this will leave a big void in our lives. (no more sat. morning breakfast buffets). I might have to learn to cook again. For all that can get the chance to stop in before it closes make sure to tell Tim and Cathy the owners how much the place has been enjoyed. I've met riders of all makes and models from all over the country while visiting there. It will be missed.
9. The Dragon Cave is becoming a regular stopover for VR members. Ken Derret aka 1-Up is on his way to Indianapolis to his cousins house, who just so happens to be married to my cousin, (small world isnt it), and stopped here for a visit and an overnite stop. His new trike is awesome and Ken really loves it. We sat and talked for a while, but alas I had to retire and leave Charlene and him talking in the livingroom. Its great having members stop by and visit and the door is always open and if there is an empty bed, which there always is, any VR member is welcome to spend the nite or two. Wont see Ken before he leaves as I have to be to work at 0600, but it was great seeing him and being able to visit.
10. Simple words and limited space cannot fully describe how absolutely fantastic this holiday trip to the Venture West IV in SLO has been. Having said that, we (Nina & I) would like to share our experience with you all. We left Vancouver (Burnaby actually) Sunday, Aug 10th around 8AM and arrived back home Thursday, Aug 21st around 8PM. During that time, we stayed 5 days in San Luis Obispo and traveled a total of appx 3000 miles. Our route took us through some amazing landscapes and a variety of weather conditions. Cool, cloudy, rainy, sunny, foggy coastlines of Oregon and California to over 100 degree temps of central California. We became experts at removing clothing and putting it back on as we went from one extreme to the other within a few hours. We discovered a lot of neat places along the way but there were 4 main highlights of our trip. The VW-IV (of course); the people we met there; two “special” stop-overs along the way (1 going down, the other on return trip); and the ride itself. Regarding the ride itself, I am the kind of rider who’s “therapy” is riding. I don’t care a lot about stopping here and there to see this and that and spending time dawdling and doing all the little “touristy” things (although I do enjoy it sometimes)…I just like to ride and ride and ride. Nina on the other hand loves to stop and check everything out. Thankfully though, I lucked out when we “found each other” …. she has taken to riding far beyond my dreams. So, as a compromise, we do a lot of riding and a little of the other “stuff” and that makes the ride one of the highlights for both of us. The first “special” stop was at Half Moon Bay. It was Aug 12th when we arrived there and that just happened to be our 2nd anniversary (just happened??? LOL … I actually planned this stop). We splurged and got a very nice suite at the Best Western which included probably the best king sized “motel” bed I’ve ever slept in, niceties like bath robes, 6 fluffy pillows, and a little balcony with chairs, table, and plants. The second “special” stop was on the way home … totally unplanned and I doubt if we could better the “aura” if we tried. We left SLO quite early Monday morning, traveled to Fresno where we stopped for an hour or so to do a bit of “biker shopping”, headed north thru Yosemite (that was spectacular!), and hooked up with route 395 heading north to Reno. It had been quite a long day and we started looking for a place to stop over for the night. We passed thru a couple small places but there were no vacancies to be found. Out of nowhere, about 5 miles before Bridgeport (we didn’t know it at the time), we came across a restaurant/motel/campground. We were ready for a rest stop anyway so Nina went in to see if they had anything available. I waited at the bike…2 minutes later she came out and said to me “you’re not going to believe what I’m about to tell you!” … “They only have 2 tents and a covered wagon available.” Huh? … a “covered wagon”? … we gotta see this! Well, one look and we were sold! $24 for the night and $10 for sheets, blankets and pillows. The feelings we had were indescribable …. camping out in an “old west” covered wagon, campfire, and adjacent “babbling brook”, under a star-lit night with a full moon! WOW! How cool is that! … and in (almost) total contrast, the restaurant had some of the best Italian spaghetti with meatballs I’ve ever eaten! Check it out… http://virginiacreeksettlement.com/ The MAIN highlight, of course, was the VWIV gathering which was the whole reason for this trip. We are so glad we “found a way” to finance this trip. We’d originally planned to go a couple month’s back and had set aside enough money to cover all our expenses but unfortunately, we had a couple unexpected money “set-backs” which got in the way so we cancelled out. The Friday before we left, I did some “creative accounting” (I’m pretty good at that LOL) and boom!! The trip was on again…luckily we were still able to get a room at Motel 6 in SLO. Well, the hospitality of the folks who put this event together is beyond words! Especially Jack and Bev … Nina and I met them when they came through Vancouver a year ago and we made an instant connection (as we seem to have done with all the “ventureriders” we’ve met on this trip). Jack & Bev showed us around a bit on Thursday, we went for lunch in Morro Bay and did the “farmer’s market” thing in SLO that evening (it was more of a giant food fair!) with Jack, Bev, and a couple of others who’d arrived that day. We spent about an hour or so dodging the masses of people, chowing down on ribs, and seeing the “gum wall”. Tim Horton’s coffee for you is not forgotten…Christmas is just around the corner ;-) ! The next 2 days (Friday & Saturday) were consumed with meeting all the rest of the group, socializing, day rides, pancake breakfast, BBQ, eating…more eating… and I have to mention Margie’s Diner. You don’t want to order anything more than what’s on the “senior’s menu” other wise you’ll be eating for ever. The portions they give you are Paul Bunyan sized! … and fruit… OMG! Nina and I had dinner there Wednesday evening (the day we arrived). I ordered the Chicken Salad and she ordered a sandwich. That came and WOW! We could have invited 2 other couples there was so much! Besides the “main part” of the orders, the plates were loaded with fruit…very good, fresh fruit and in no small quantities. We wanted to share so we asked for a side plate …. OMG!!! Even the side plate comes with fruit! We ate as much as we could and still left there with a full take-out plate of fruit LOL! Without a doubt, that place has GOOD GRUB and LOTS of it! Unfortunately, people’s names generally escape me quickly unless I’ve spoken them a number of times. Forgive me if I don’t mention you specifically but everyone we met was wonderful. Although we all come from different “walks of life”, we all came together as one big, happy “family” as though we’d known each other for a long time. Everyone seemed to become instant friends. It was all of you that made our trip the most memorable time of our lives! A great big THANK YOU to everyone! Thanks to those who helped us plan our route home. A special thanks to Paul who gave us his National Parks pass so we could save $20 going through Yosemite. A “chance” meeting with Brian (friesman1) at Biggs on the route home was great …. sorry about your bike troubles buddy but I’m sure glad you made it down. Chuck (ServiceDog)…. I really enjoyed sharing stories and laffs with ya buddy! Yep… Nina’s a “keeper” … that was a very special compliment my friend! Vic (Lone Eagle)… now you’re walking proof that one shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover (no disrespect intended my friend but a concert pianist??? who’da thunk that?) ...you’re one cool dude! Rich99, Condor, EasyRider, Wizard, Kingbird, and all of you … you’re all awesome people and we’re so blessed to have been in your company! This was the first event of this kind we’ve attended and because of all you folks, we’ve decided to make attending these events the focus of our annual holidays and hopefully, when we retire, it will become our passion. Well, it was maybe a little “long-winded” for you all here but frankly, I could have written 10 more pages. I hope you all enjoyed reading this as much as we’ve enjoyed writing it. SilvrT & Pinta Nina (yep, she now has a handle) … a few pics for your pleasure http://s393.photobucket.com/albums/pp16/SilvrT/SLOtrip/ http://s393.photobucket.com/albums/pp16/SilvrT/SLOtrip2/ ...and... our route ...
11. Has anyone replaced their CB antenna? What kind did you use and what other parts do you need to do it? I looked at some at a local truck stop but they wont mount directly on to the old mount.

13. Here's one for you to consider.. There are two bridges linking our twin cities and you have to pass through the tolls.. You can toss in your coins or use an electronic pass. If you use your coins, you have to come to a stop to pull out your coins and toss them into the basket.. If sure those who have gone through tolls appreciate the annoyance of doing this, so the electronic pass is always better to use.. Last night two of our friends were stopped at the tolls to put in their coins and were hit from behind by a 5 ton postal truck who apparently did not see the large 2008 Venture (a couple of weeks old) with two people on it.. Hit them hard enough to write off the bike, toss him off and pin his lady passenger under the front axle of the truck. Though shaken up, neither were seriously hurt. She was relatively OK and even asked the rider to take a photo of her legs sticking out from under the truck for prosperity while waiting for the EMS to pull her out. She tells us she only received minor scrapes and bruises but is OK. Now, this is why I prefer to use my electronic pass as I don't have to come to a complete stop at the tolls, and the days I do forget my pass and need to stop to use coins, I turn on my 4 way flashers and pump my brake pedal a lot to get the cager's attention. My brake light is insanely bright and if some cager doesn't see it and nails me, he better make sure i can't get up cause he'll have some 'splainin' to do of his blindness. So just a heads up when coming to the tolls.. make yourself SEEN by the blind for your survival..
14. no, that's not quarter mile times. If I had been about a second quicker getting to a low visability intersection in my neighborhood, I would have been T-boned in the right side. About three blocks from my house this morning, I was coming over a slight hill and caught sight of a car coming up to a stop sign that was going to fast to get stopped in time. I layed on the brakes and airhorns. When the woman came to a stop, her front end was about a foot from the yellow centerline. She was blocking my lane completely. I got stopped a couple feet before I contacted her front bumper. As we were sitting in the intersection with her not moving, I looked in the car and it was two young Mexican looking women and they were still not looking at me. They were gesturing at each other like they were trying to figure out which way to turn. We never did make eye contact with me staring straight at them. I decided that the best thing for me to do was to do a sharp left and ease around the front of their car. I would have sat there if it had not been for me being concerned about someone coming across the hill and rearending me. We have had a big problem for awhile now with Mexicans driving without a license and any insurance. It is a routine thing to look in the daily police records in the paper and see Mexican sounding names getting charged with DUI. no license or insurance. I have aready increased my uninsured motorist coverage, but I doubt if it is enough. What's worse is this situation is constantly getting worse, not better and I don't feel there is anything we can do about it. RandyA
15. For anyone who has an RSV and a shop manual, what is the emergency stop switch, where is it located on the bike, and what is its purpose? The early Royal Stars don't have this switch. The switch in question can be seen in the RSV shop manual on pages 8-76 to 8-80, or near the bottom left corner of page 481 of the Clymer's manual. This is not the engine stop switch on the right handlebar switchbox. This is something else. What in the world is it?
16. Well, I'm sitting at the Flying J truck stop in Fargo, ND. My wife's niece (in Moorehead, MN) is having a baby shower so I said I'd drive her up here on the bike if she wanted. So we busted butt up I-94 to Moorehead, MN. Only 250 miles from St. Paul. I dropped her off, said hi to her nieces and nephews and left the girls to be girls. So here I sit at a truck stop with wi-fi eating beef ribs. In a few hours they'll be done and I'll pick her up and hit the highway. We did see a Midnight Venture heading East on I-94 somewhere west of Alexandria, MN. That one belong to any one here?
17. Was it any of you hooligans in our little town of Northwood Iowa Friday night? Spotted a blue 2nd gen Venture in front of the micro brewery we have in town. We were in a hurry to get to Cedar Rapids to my sister's wedding so we didn't have time to stop. We've never seen it before and a lot of people stop at the brewery on their way out to Diamond Jo casino on I-35.
18. I'm down here in Kissimmee visiting my Bro Hulk who's in Oceola Medical Center recovering from a Triple Valve job on his heart... He's a former Member here who's not real PC or WWW savy and seldom posted... I've been riding his 2000 RSV around which has been siting since Bike Week and had old gas in it... I've run a couple of cans of Sea Foam through it and now have new gas in it and it is running better but... I have to drag the clutch a little and over rev it a little to get it to take off from a stop without knocking/pinging... Could this be a syncing problem... It sometimes pings when reving in neutral.. He has never had the carbs synced and I'd like to fix it for him so it'll be ready to roll when he recovers... I'm down here until Wed. unless the hurricane changes our flight plans. Anybody got any ideas??
19. Well I need to quit messing around and get the ignition switch replaced. I was kind of hoping the problem would go away but it isn’t going to. I was ridding home from church tonight when my bike just went dead. After I coasted to a stop I turned the switch off and back on & thankfully it fired right up. Does anyone have a recommendation about who to order the switch from?
20. I've just returned home from attending a guitar clinic featuring Nashville phenomenon Johnny Hiland and his band. Wow! That cat can sure play, any style, any genre, just as clean and pretty as can be. For those of you that might be in the North GA area riding around tomorrow, he will be performing a free show from 2-5 PM at the new Galaxy Music store, which is located at 6150 GA Hwy 400, about 2.5 miles south of the Dawsonville Premium Outlet Mall, on the eastern side of the road. If you want to see a great player and are going to be anywhere nearby, be sure to stop by! Terry

Outa-here

I'm taking off tomorrow morning with 5 good friends, we will be riding through colorfull Colorado for the next 4 maybe 5 days! not sure yet. We are meeting at 6:30 am tomorrow, we don't know where were going but we will stop when we get there. I'ts going to be a great adventure. Only proplem is, one RSV (mine) :15_8_211[1]:and the rest Harleys! oh well! I can't wait. Gene
22. 84 Venture Std. Any one had this problem? Happens alot after I come to a stop after 50-100 miles. Intermittent. Any possible areas to look?
23. Ok now I just got back from driving from Boston MA to Buffalo NY (around 1,100 miles) to visit the grandkids and family. Now on my trip I saw Harleys, Suzuki’s, Yamahas, and some Hondas. Now all in all it was a great ride no problems with cagers but can someone tell me what is the issue with Goldwing drivers? I mean I saw Harley drivers who were friendly enough and along with the rest but when it comes the Goldwing drivers I have my doubts they have a clue what riding is about. Now do these bike come with a gold plated sick they shove you know where before they get on or is it inserted automatically when they sit down or is it they are just upset at spending $25,000 on a bike? I pulled into a rest stop on the NYS thruway and there was a group of 6 or so and talk about a “DON”T EVEN THINK ABOUT PARKING NEAR US” look. And as they walked by you would have thought I was the black plague the way they ignored me. Now I may be wrong by classifying these as “all” Goldwing drivers but this is not the first time this has happened to me and I did not say or do anything to even be remotely considered out of line. The ride was great though no rain until I was on the last 45 minutes of the trip and I did 8 total fill ups and traveled just over 1,100 miles in 4 days. Went through around 25 gallons of gas and saw some nice sites along the trip. I had one nervous point when traveling across NYS I saw 2 deer running along and figured I should move over in case they changed their heading and that was out of the question there was a semi in the way so I slowed down and got past them with no issues but as a side note they did stop running just as I approached them and they did turn facing the highway but I did not stick around to see if they tried to cross.
24. Yesterday our LI Red Knights Chapter NY25 went over to Connecticut to attend the RK CT4 Annual charity Ride for the Childrens Burn Center. Well organized and was a great ride with GREAT attendance. Only problem with the run was that an Officer who was helping with the escort was hit as he was moving forward in the line to position himself for his next stop point. A girl in a Toyota thought she could make a small gap that wasnt even there just as the Officer reached that point. I have no more of a report but will post it when I have more but the Officer was laying on his back in the road as several a bikers stopped as other officers as well. EMS responded. The ride continued as it was too dangerous for it all to stop. Please pray for the Officer. I cant tell you which department he is from as there were several agencies there and we werent told. Other than that mishap the ride was excellent and would do it again in heartbeat.
25. Hi Everyone..., I have always shiffed down through the gears when stopping. I was looking through my manual over the weekend and I'm sure I read that you down shift through the gears all the same time just before comming to a stop. What do everyone else do? Newfie Bill Paradise, NL 99 RSV
