  1. Never fails I got the title in the mail my 04 Silverado is paid in full. I started the truck up last night and the service engine light came on but it runs fine. No time to have it checked and I'm leaving for New York this week. There used to be a paper clip shorting method on the under dash service plug that would spit out the error codes. I think those had the 12 pin diagnostic plugs. Mine has a 16 pin plug under the drivers side dash Is there a way I can put it in test mode to get the stored error code. It is probably something mnor but I need to know before leaving.
  2. Anyone know the factory setting for idle and how to adjust it if needed? Had my 64k service done today and don't believe it was done correctly. I could take it back and say fix it, but if they potentially didn't do it right the 1st time... At a stop light, clutch pulled in, idles around 1100 rpm. Put it in neutral to be curious and it shot up to about 2-2100 rpm. I am pretty sure before I brought it in for service, the idle rpm speed was about the same regardless of in gear w/ clutch lever pulled all the way in or in neutral. Really not sure why it would make a difference. It practically accomplishes the same thing. Going in the highway at 65 mph, was around 2500-3k. Kinda weird that neutral and 65 mph are just about the same rpm. Also while going 65 mph, pull in the clutch lever and you can still hear the engine rev the same rmp for a few seconds instead of an instant drop. It more or less goes at the 2500-3k rpm for a few seconds and then gradually drops. I am used to an instant drop and not a delay. When shifting gears you hear the engine rev between the shifts. It runs pretty close to like it used to when going from 4th-5th. To quote the paperwork "Unit idles irratic and hangs us sometimes. Unit will need a carb. clean in the near future" Well I put in a full can of seafoam this year. Granted it could have loosened up some debris, plugged the jets, etc...but before I brought it in I wasn't complaining. It seemed to handle the same way (until after it was serviced today) since I bought the bike back in June '08 and this is the 2nd service done by this dealer. Just a guess, but I doubt the previous owner did anything for carb cleaning additives. So not sure if a carb cleaning is in order. On the 64k service they did change the plugs, synch the carbs, & adjust idle (amongs other things, they went by the 4k service). Can the comment about unit idles irratic and hangs up sometimes be related to the carbs being synched incorrectly? One of my questions (got a list made up already) to the tech on Tuesday when the shop reopens, is did he notice the irratic idle before or after the carbs were synched. I am pretty sure I know the answer, but I want to hear it from him. It was litterally at the end of the day and shop had about 10 minutes until it closed. The techs were gone except for the service manager. Asked her about the carb cleaning cost. She said and I quote "It has 2 carbs so $160" What!!!!! 2 carbs.....and you are a yamaha service manager. Just a wild guess, but I believe there are 4. I have read stories like this on this board but never happened to me until now. And also, I'll pass on the carb cleaning. The jets might need pulled to make sure there aren't any debris in them, but I ain't gonna pay to have it done for that much and based on my past 2 experiences w/ them, I ain't gonna let them touch the carbs. Too much knowledge on this board and also people that can help out if need be. I also mentioned to her that it's weird that it needs the carbs cleaned since I put in a can of seafoam earlier in the year. She said yeah, that stuff works ok, but sometimes you just have to pull the carbs all apart to get them really clean. Quick poll of '99 owners that have taken their carbs all apart to clean them or felt it was necessary. Thanks
  3. Just hit the 4000 mile mark and really can not afford to go see the stealer for this service so I pulled up the service chart and was surprised to see that they recommend 8000 miles on an oil change. So is there any thing critical on the 4000 mile check or do I hang my key for the year and hope I get back to working a 40 Hr week by next season.
  4. Can anyone recommend a good dealer in the North Atlanta area to do warranty service work? I know of Lawrenceville Honda Yamaha, Cycle Nation of Canton, and Motions (in Marietta). I've visited them all in the past, and they all seemed nice, but I've never done service business with any, and the Lawrenceville store has a number of negative reviews online. We just bought an '06 Venture that has a problem with the radio (no lights or display whatsoever) and I'd like to get it looked at and fixed as a warranty item. The previous owner said his dealer told him the radio isn't covered under warranty, even though the owner's manual explicitly states that it is. I'm looking for a dealer with a good service department that won't give me grief about the warranty.
  5. Is it just me or is there something wrong with this pic. And I don't mean my fingers being inside the service box. I'm just wondering where they grounded everything at.
  6. After careful consideration and waiting for the 2010 venture I have bought a new to me toy. 2007 wing with EFI. It sure dose have a lot of buttons though! On the way home while trying to find the auto wave button I may have accidently launched the space shuttle. I still intend to hang out here cause I still have the 84 and I think it will still make a good service truck. ( That would be a shift cover from a 5 ton truck this spring ). Besides you guys make me laugh, and after looking at my bank balance, I need a good laugh!
  7. I overshot my 16k mile service on my 07 Venture by 4k. So, I took it in Tues. I got it back Wed, $800 poorer. I was disappointed to hear that the carbs were 'barely out of balance'. I had them save the old plugs so I could see them - they looked great! Hardly any wear at all, and the color looked right. I ended up keeping them as a spare, just in case a new one goes bad. I was hoping that the bike would run like a crotch rocket, since I haven't had it tuned in 10k - nope, she runs about the same. I could tell they had the fairing off and my handlebars had to be re-adjusted for me. Oh well, at least they said that she looks great and everything is in 'ship shape'. craigr
  8. I'm looking for a good service manual. I've found clymer and the factory one. What one would be more practical for home use. I'm not going to tear my venture down and rebuild it, just do the basic stuff. I'm also adding some LED lights to it and maybe a louder horn. Maybe a running light kit also..

    600 Mile service

On the 600 mile service how important do you think to have the dealer do it, or do it yourself, looks like going over bolts and nut and oil change and that is a breeze unless your old like me...Then becomes a challenge.. Also manual does not call for rear drive fluid to be change at 600 I think it better to drop it your thoughts.. Reason I'm asking this I might makea M&E that will put me over if I don't get to it before I leave, i'll be over no more than 200 miles.. I'm a real funny about doing it on time...
  10. In early July my 08 RSV developed a problem with the starter electronics. When you turn the key on, the bike will start and the starter will stay ingaged without touching the starter switch. Since it is under warrantee I took it to the shop. They have had the bike for over a month now. They have replaced the starter selenoid, a relay, and the handle bar switch. The bike still does the same thing. I told them I thought it was a short in the wiring. Their response was there are miles on wire on the bike and they do not know where to start looking. The have contacted the Yamaha service tech for adivse. But at this time they do not know when they will get the the bike fixed and back to me. The weather is perfect for riding and I have no bike to ride.
  11. I received an email from my oldest son today about this. I agree totally with the guy that originated the call for an "Online Memorial Service"! You'll understand when you read further! I urge you to copy it and send it to all you think may care (and maybe some that don't but should). Give a true hero his due! Godspeed Shifty! Godspeed! and thank you and all the "Band of Brothers" from that war. I salute you, sir! __________________________________________________________________________ Memorial Service: you're invited. I want a nationwide memorial service for Darrell "Shifty" Powers. Shifty volunteered for the airborne in WWII and served with Easy Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of the 101st Airborne Infantry. If you've seen "Band of Brothers" on HBO or the History Channel, you know Shifty. His character appears in all 10 episodes, and Shifty himself is interviewed in several of them. I met Shifty in the Philadelphia airport several years ago. I didn't know who he was at the time. I just saw an elderly gentleman having trouble reading his ticket. I offered to help, assured him that he was at the right gate, and noticed the "Screaming Eagle", the symbol of the 101st Airborne, on his hat. Making conversation, I asked him if he'd been in the 101st Airborne or if his son was serving. He said qu ietly that he had been in the 101st. I thanked him for his service, then asked him when he served, and how many jumps he made. Quietly and humbly, he said, "Well, I guess I signed up in 1941 or so, and was in until sometime in 1945.....", at which point my heart skipped. Then, again very humbly, he said, "I made the 5 training jumps at Toccoa, and then jumped into Normandy . . . . do you know where Normandy is?" At this point my heart stopped. I told him yes, I knew exactly where Normandy was, and I knew what D-Day was. At that point he said, "I also made a second jump into Holland , into Arnhem ." I was standing with a genuine war hero . . . . and then I realized that it was June, just after the anniversary of D-Day. I asked Shifty if he was on his way back from France , and he said, "Yes. And it's real sad because these days so few of the guys are left, and those that are, lots of them can't make the trip." My heart was in my throat and I didn't know what to say. I helped Shifty get onto the plane and then realized he was back in Coach, while I was in First Class. I sent the flight attendant back to get him and said that I wanted to switch seats. When Shifty came forward, I got up out of the seat and told him I wanted him to have it, that I'd take his in Coach. He said "No, son, you enjoy that seat. Just knowing that there are still some who remember what we did and still care is enough to make an old man very happy." His eyes were filling up as he said it. And mine are brimming up now as I write this. Shifty died on June 17 after fighting cancer. There was no parade. No big event in Staples Center . No wall to wall, back to back, 24/7 news coverage. No weeping fans on television. And that's not right. Let's give Shifty his own Memorial Service, online, in our own quiet way. Please forward this email to everyone you know. Especially to the veterans. Rest in peace, Shifty. ----------------------------- "A nation without heroes is nothing." - Roberto Clemente
  12. I'm getting ready to put refill my rear end oil. I bought Lucas 75W-90 synthetic that says it exceeds service level GL5. Will this work ok?
  13. I downloaded the 1st Gen Service Manual (8385servicemanual.pdf) and found the cam specs, page 403, missing. Does anyone know why this page is corrupt? Can someone send me this page?

  15. I've found that SPOT is offering a rebate which is good for a free unit when you sign up for 2 years of service. I've had a modest interest in one of these units for some time and this rebate is about to push me over the edge. However, the reviews I've been reading online tonight about the SPOT service don't look too favorable but it is hard to tell if people are using the unit properly. Does anyone here have personal experience with the SPOT system and if so, what are your thoughts? Thanks, Dennis
  16. When I left Don's, I must have packed too much stuff in the bags, (well, OK, I know I did) and my right bag is VERY stuck shut. I can release the front latch, but not the back one. I have tried pushing, pulling and every form of violent acts to get it open short of destroying it. My thought is somehow to take the hinge apart. it seems that there are two roll pins, front and back. I tried an easy out last night, but they didn't move. I called two dealers and talked with their parts and service guys, and the computer blowup didn't show the breakdown of the hinge. And the service depts, had never run into this problem. I'm now thinking if we have a small enough aircraft drill bit here, I might try and drill out the roll pin. (I'm assuming that there is one) Anyone run into this? Steve
  17. To make a long story short; Yesterday I received an e-mail from Garmin telling me map updates were available....When I went on their site it offered an update disk for $69. or a lifetime update download service for $119. Sounded like a good deal so I took it... The download took over 6 hours on a high speed DSL Then I tried to open the downloaded file which proceeded to grind in the background for 45 minutes totally blocking all attempts to stop it - I thought I had just gotten a virus !!!! I ended up doing a cold boot by turning off the power !!!! After another round of the same I put the download in the trash and deleted it. I then sent 2 e-mails to Garmin explaining the problem and asking for an immediate refund - both as a reply to the purchase confirmation and on the "my garmin" site as a customer service complaint. Today, having received no reply, I called them -the call took well over an hour!!! In the end, the best they would do is promise a refund in "two or three billing cycles" !!!!!!! Needless to say, I unloaded on them the problem of constant freeze-ups and resets by battery removal !!! NO SOLUTION !!!! I asked how they could expect someone to dedicate 6 hour dowloads two or three times a year - NO ANSWER, but the person confirmed that just to open that file on Windows Vista it would take over 1/2 hour!!!! Wow!!!! on mine , it went past 45 minutes and was still going, and I have a fast machine !!!!! So folks, I don't know about you- but I am through throwing money at Garmin and tollerating the bad service and nonexistant response. I don't do business with companies that don't care for their customers.... Next time it's another brand.......
  18. Well at MD , I noticed that my pillow top seat was ripping at the seams . Within the pleats where the naugahyde was vulcanized . Scoot is just over 3 years old now with almost 52K miles on it . It's not a tear , rip , or normal wear and tear , just coming apart . I went to my dealer today to show them the seat . Service manager said that Yamaha would more than likely not cover it . Well I said to him , just call the rep and tell them to just call me direct to tell me that if they are not going to cover the seat . I told him also to tell the rep to be prepared to receive numerous e-mails from VR.Org if the seat will not be replaced also . 2 hours later , I got the call from the service manager that I will have a new seat with 2-7 days . So thanks to all of you VR.Org members in advance for standing behind me . Man , can I BS !! :rotf: BEER30
  19. I guess another big question I have before I purcahse a RSV is service after the sale at the dealership. I have narrowed it down to two dealers in my area out of three. All took me on a tour of their maintenance shops; two were well organized and clean and one was anything but. How have they treated your bike while in for a service? For example: Is it usually a good experience because the job was done right and returned in decent shape? Or is your Bike covered with oil and handprints? Scratched or dented? Left out in the rain? Used your bike as a demo? (not funny--heard of this happening) Fixed right the first time? Maybe I am too picky because I like to keep it clean and in good running order.
  20. Hey, Any one interested in this '84 thats for sale a few miles down the road from me? Want me to go and have a look at it for you ? The owner says: I am looking for an excuse here, ................. anyone ? Brian H.
  21. i want to thank freebird for what he offered and did for me...we were leaving on a blue ridge pkwy/ natchez trace may 2....of course, this had been planned for a year for vacation......4 days before leaving, the left rear coil failed ...and the dealer says may 12 backorder......my vacaton days are set a year in advance, there is no changing.....long story short...freebird sent me a spare coil, next day service.....no charge.....although , it turned out i didn't need it.....doesn't matter....it was there if i did....THANKS FREEBIRD>>> here's why i didn't need the coil....the service manager along with yamaha reps. ok'd a swap from another new bike from another dealership until my coil came in....so that coil actually made it and i picked the bike up may 1 and left may 2...on schedule......this service manager's name is ed and he works for yamaha of camp hill....this guy also warrantied my battery.......which failed in one year........so there are some good dealers out there........hope ed stays around........so thanks also to this service manager and camp hill of Pa. volts = amps . resistance.........ok..i'm showing 13.8 volts at cruising...... as i turn on accessories ( heated clothes ) etc. the voltage drops to the point where it appears i'm showing about 12.2....maybe even closer to 12....i noticed my gloves were not getting all that warm and i also wasn't using my heated pant liners, which would add more load............so is the system operating correctly.......this is a brand new battery and i have the buckeye stator......my guess is i have resistance somewhere???.......all connections have been checked.......my battery never ran down... i also run passing lamps and a run/turn/brake light system..........how can i test for proper amp output from the stator......
  22. Good Morning all, I had my 08 venture in for the first service this week and was talking to the service writer about a set of slip-ons I saw on a RSV when I bought mine in january. He was not sure of the brand but told me they were shochrome or shoguns. I have not talked to parts to get the name or price yet.Twin 1 1/2 pipes per side with good mellow tone. The queston is He told me they have to rejet the carbs and being there is no kit they have to make up their own. I thought I seen on one of threads that as long as you do not change the header pipe you do not have to rejet these V-4's. Am I being told a dealer lie or is there a chance he is telling the truth. He was not happy when I told him I would be putting the pipes on myself. I took it in for the first service but will be doing my own from now on. With the help of any of you guys if I find myself stumped on some of the maintance. Thanks for any help I can get on the slip-on problem. Richard
  23. I just recieved a paper service manual for an 09 RSTD for $30.00 to my door from Riggs Kwong manualwizard1970@yahoo.com TC:hurts:
  24. Is anyone else having trouble bringing up the 1st gen service manuals and parts diagrams in the 1st gen tech library? I just tried to see a wiring schematic of the later 1st gens anti-dive system and none of the manuals will come up. I have the early 1st gens repair manual but it doesn't have the schematics for the later first gens. I need to compare. Dick
  25. I'm thinking about flying in to Cleveland, OH to buy a Venture and riding it home to Georgia. I was just wondering if there was anyone close by who could check it over for me before I make the trip up there. I don't suspect any real issues, but it would be nice to have someone lay hands on it. The owner did say he thought I would need to replace the rear shock, and has adjusted his price for this. He said service was done at the dealer, so I'll check with the Yamaha dealers nearby and see what I can learn. I guess I could arrange for an inspection by the dealer as another option. The bike is located about 30 miles from Cleveland in Chardon OH. Thanks! James
