1. My wife and I were interviewed about M/C Touring and riding in general on this past Monday and Tuesday Morning Coffee hour show on BNNS Radio! My uncle runs the Station out of Belevidere, Ill. We went to visit him and he put my wife and I on the air. His co-host, 'BigD' out of Kenesaw, Ga, rides also as well as another Co-Host, Bruce. He asked what kind of bike we have then asked to describe it and why we ride, etc. It was quite an experience and I highly recommend it to anyone that gets a chance. If you are interested in our interviews and want to check them out, they should be in the Archived shows under 'Coffee Hour' at BNNSRadio.com. (each show is 2 hours). Both shows talk a lot about riding, but include other topics as well. I haven't listened to them yet. If you do check them out, let me know what you think - good or bad. Craigr
2. Awhile back I posted a request for info on a 1986 Cavalcade http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=60982 Well my friend ended up buying it and today I saw and rode it. This Bike was the Cavacade LS and man was it loaded with chrome and toys. It had options that had to have been brought down by aliens. On top ofthat the bike looked like it just came out of the box, apparently there were only 700 sold in Canada. I took the bike for a ride and it was very nice riding bike. However having said that I still prefer riding the venture. It felt to me like throttle response on the venture was much quicker and Handling was much nicer at least while in motion. Believe it or not the wheel base is a little longer, but the bike is lighter by some 200 LBS. Putting it on the center stand is a breeze. Along with the bike being lighter the center stand has a much longer step down bar on the side of the stand which swivals forward forward out of the way with the aid of a return spring type setup. The seat back was attached to the top luggage rack which could be slide back and forth depending on how much passinger room one needed. the seat and back rest were inflatable and it had automatic air ride suspension which you set at the touch of a button while sitting on the bike with both stands pulled up off the ground
3. Just returned home from our weekend camping trip with the new-to-us tent trailer. Had to stick a plug in a nailhole in the rear tire just before we left. Fairly new Dunlop Elite 3 (appx 4500 miles on it). Checked the tire regularly during the trip and found it to be very hot after an hour or so riding. So hot in fact that I could not hold my hand on it very long and the wheel was even hotter. Running 39 lbs cold in the tire. The front tire was warm but not too warm and the trailer tires were about the same. I guess I had about 40lbs weight on the tongue and a light load on the bike. We did the whole trip (appx 800 kilometers) without issue but the tire was still quite hot each time I checked it. BTW, I have no idea how hot the tire might have been before this trip riding without the trailer. Any thoughts on this guys??
4. Since I am the passenger, I tend to keep my eyes on the road especially when we are riding in the country. I watch for gravel that washed out on the road from gravel driveways, gravel in curves and piles of gravel that have fallen on the road from perhaps a passing dump truck. I look for your crushed gravel, your B19 and pea gravel. I can usually spot gravel 75 feet ahead of us. We have been on nicely paved roads that suddenly become gravel. We have had to ride on gravel roads for many miles at a time. I deal with it, but do not especially like it. When we were in the badlands in SD we went on a short cut on a gravel road to see the sights. While riding a road grader was coming the other direction and almost caused us to go down because we wound up in this heavy loose gravel. It was not a good moment. Then of course I find out Freebird has a gravel drive. I am a lot better about gravel now than I was at first. Point of the thread, do your wives help look for problems laying on the road while you are riding, and if so is it a good thing in your opinion or do you wish we would just set there and be quiet. No matter what you say, I will keep watching. Yama Mama
5. OK, here is my question. We (3 couples) are headed to Canaan Valley, WV on Saturday September 3rd. We hav e rented a home for a week and are just going to be riding around looking at the sights. Canaan Valley is in the corner where PA, WV, And MD sort of come together. We are looking for siggestions on roads we should ride, towns to visit, sights to see and the such. I have looked at all the travel things on the web, the Motorcyel roads and things like that. We are looking for the raods only people who have ridden them know about. We are looking for the sights and places to go that you stumble on when riding. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You all in advance Rick, Shirley, Bryan, Lisa, Bob and Patty
6. I recently had a Baron's Tach installed on my 08 RSV. Prior to installing, I set the Cold ERPM at 750 (by ear (old Submarine Sornaman Training)), after choking when starting. Once Warm (after riding 2 blocks), the warm Idle ERPM increased to around 950-1000. After installing Tach, I increased the Cold Idle ERPM to 1000. Once Warm (after riding 2 blocks), the warm Idle ERPM increases to around 1150. Is 1000 ERPM considered an optimal range? Was 750 ERPM too low?
7. I just completed my second three day trip into the Kootney Lake area of BC. Three days of absolutely perfect riding on Top rated Destination Highways in British Columbia's Kootney Lake area. I have to say that my 2004 Midnight Royal Star Venture ran flawlessly. I live in Red Deer, Alberta and the mountains are not that far away but I usually try to make this run around Kootney Lake at least twice a riding season. We were on highway 3, 3A and 6 and we pretty much had the roads pretty much to ourselves there was very little traffic. My friend rides a highly modified 2009 Yamaha Raider. My RSV handled awesome. I set up my suspension for riding in the twisties and we I had an unbelievable ride. Three back to back days of riding from about 8:00am to 6:00pm each day. We spent two nights in Creston, BC as our base and I realize that 1800kms isn't that huge a distance but boy did we have fun. At one point my friend commented that he was surprised that I could stay with him in the curves and while passing but when I told him that the RSV comes from the Vmax heritage he understood. I have had a 1500 Wing and an 1800 Wing but man do I love my RSV. I'm in no way bashing or bad mouthing my former wings, just that I far and away prefer my RSV. So totally comfortable and a lot of people were shocked at how she handled and moved through the twisties. I just had to comment again on what an awesome ride the RSV is. Chris in Red Deer, AB
8. Leaving for Lake Cumberland State Park around 5:30 am in the morning. Gathering of the guard event. Hitting the hammer road I-64 around 6 am from Morehead,Ky. Then 627 to I-75 and so on. 189 mile one way from here. If any one interested in accompanying me to this event just give me a ring. Going to bed around 10:30 pm. I am riding solo. 9. I just got back from a 2 hour ride in very windy conditons...but it was a great ride! I noticed AGAIN today my bike (the 84) seems to really snake around Right sweeping turns. Now I know this condition would be improved with a superbrace and progressives and I am going to put them into my 88. Regardless....why doesn't it wallow around on Left turns too? When I turn Left, it feels like I'm on rails! I'd be very happy if I was riding a NASCAR track...but Right is always an adventure and even scary at times! Tires only have abou 3000 on them so I doubt it is that....why one side only?
10. THINGS TO THINK ABOUT ! 1. You spend the first two years of their life teaching them to walk and talk. Then you spend the next sixteen telling them to sit down and shut up. 2. Grandchildren are God's reward for not killing your own children. 3. Mothers of teens now know why some animals eat their young. 4. Children seldom misquote you. In fact, they usually repeat word for word what you shouldn't have said. 5. The main purpose of holding children's parties is to remind yourself that there are children more awful than your own . 6. We childproofed our homes, but they are still getting in. ADVICE FOR THE DAY: Be nice to your kids. They will choose your nursing home one day AND FINALLY: IF YOU HAVE A LOT OF TENSION AND YOU GET A HEADACHE, DO WHAT IT SAYS ON THE ASPIRIN BOTTLE: 'TAKE TWO ASPIRIN' AND 'KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN'! Ok, now for a more serious side to this. I may be asking a stupid question, but are there laws to prevent my boy from riding with me at 6 yr old ? He is big enough to hold on and all. Just thinking about a very short ride around home sometime. He has asked about riding a couple times. I am thinking that he is not allowed until he has reached 16 yr old or so. That is what I told him last time he was interested. Fuzzy
11. Hi Folks, First, let me say that this is definitely one of the best sites around and the folks here are always informative and if nothing else.. entertaining.. I have been on this site for about a year and a half and have found the tech sections and discussion very helpful and informative. Best $12 a year I have ever spent. The question I have for everyone is .. has anyone ever tried or is using the Baron's Longboard replacement for the stock floorboards? I have tried different style highway pegs and nothing seems to work for me but want a little more room to adjust my feet while out riding. Have seen the the longer floorboards on the Victory's and think they are a great idea. Have been looking for something similar and found the Baron's version but not sure how they would really work or how adjustable they are.. front to back.. side to side? Thought I would check here before I go and blow $300 on new floorboards and don't fit my needs either. Thanks Ah.. PS.. I am riding a 2004 RSV.. love the bike .. one of the best touring bikes I have ridden..
12. I'm trying to find the thread from a few weeks ago of that cop riding the timed course. Anyone got that link
13. For those that wear earplugs, I've been wearing these now for the past couple of months and really like them better than anything else I've tried. They're not as dense as the typical yellow foam earplugs and after riding all day my ear canals aren't sore. I can hear the intercom very well without all the engine/road/wind noise. I found them near the pharmacy in Wal-mart.
14. Just wondering if you need to really turn the fuel cock off after riding (I forget to do it)? Also if the fuel warning light comes on can you move to reserve on the fly while riding? Also manual says to shift from 4th to 5th (O/D) at 31 mph, this seems pretty low to go into O/D gear. Just wondering if most people wait until around 35 - 40 to shift to O/D. Thanks for the help, only had the bike for a few weeks and still getting to know it. Glad I found this site.
15. Hi folks, I just wanted to once again thank all of you who so willing helped me in the restoration and rebuild of my 1983 Venture Royale. It is just about complete except for 2 niggling problems; the oil and brake icons on the monitor show up intermittently even though neither is at fault and E4 errors on the air control readout. And it looks like I have found the answer to both of those on the website. I will be fixing those this week. I have included a pix of the finished project of which I am quite proud. It runs well and I have enjoyed several rides. However it looks like that may be coming to an end. During this past Winter I have developed a chronic case of BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo). It usually starts as a dizziness and can get really bad, I wound up in the ER twice this year. Doc says older folks are more prone to get this (THAT'S ME!). So for safety's sake I”ll be putting both of my 2 wheelers up for sale (I also have a 2000 500cc Kawasaki Vulcan). Since I can't give up riding, I'm going to be looking for a used trike or frike. Three wheels will provide more stability and should give me ample time to react if I start getting dizzy. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. So if you know of anyone who might be interested in either of my bikes please let me know. And if anyone has a lead on a trike or frike also let me know. And again thanks to all you great helpers and this website, I couldn't have done it without you. Frank
16. So, Tom was riding home on a back windy road, at 10pm Monday night. A stray cow was in the road, black angus, and Tom didn't even see it to brake. He spent the night in the ICU (concussion, small bleeds in the brain) but the cow didn't survive at all. Tom is much better, bleeds stopped and he's been sitting watching baseball and playing videos games so the brain doesn't seem to be hurting. Sore, but only take Tylenol. The front forks on the Venture are bent toward the rear, so we are going to part it out. The front faring is destroyed but all pieces from the front of the seat down are good. He's debating on riding again or not. I'm trying to push him to keep riding. He enjoys it, good fuel mileage and I was starting to enjoy riding with him. Stupid cow. . .
17. Hey, Snag, what have you heard of the guy who was killed the other day 'test riding' a motorcycle? The paper didn't say much beyond 'hitting a speed bump'.
18. Sighted in Boone, NC this Sat night/Sun Morn - two TN Ventures. One had the tag listed above. I that it was a cool tag. Anyone here? They were riding with a lady and her son on a Crike (car/trike) I will post pics as soon as I can.
19. Cody is great riding! Jan had to be back early to work on her and Carol's chili for the cook off so we had a short riding day. Even with that, we were able to ride Beartooth from east to west. Got some great pics: http://s470.photobucket.com/albums/rr70/utadventure/VR%20org%202011%20Rally%20-%20Day%201/ Tomorrow Yellowstone! Oh, and sorry Black Owl Dave
20. OK was just brain storming and was wondering if anyone is riding down to Vogel from the north like Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana or Michigan and would want to meet up in route and ride down together. Would love to meet up so let me know. Also I am camping and the site I have reserved at this point in time allows 2 tents so if anyone wants to share a site just let me know. If people are coming from north of me they can stay at the house and we can leave from here OR I will probably ride down towards the louisville area and spend the night then I can meet up with people. the next day. If you are riding down just throw out some ideas of a meeting place Rick
21. Could you do it? What if it meant raising 15 to 20 Million Dollars to build the Diabetes Research Center at the University of Iowa. That is exactly what Darrell Rall, Grand Aerie Trustee of the Fraternal order of Eagles is proposing to do. To that end the Grand Aerie has committed $600,000 and the Grand Auxillary has committed $400,000 to fund this project. His plan as it now stands is to tour all 48 Continental U.S. States and all of the Canadian provinces meeting up and riding with Eagle Riders and other supporting riding groups along the way. As the Georgia State Eagle Rider Ride Coordinator I have pledged my help assistance and support to this project. Check out www.foeeagleridersga.byethost24.com as further details are known I will post and update as this project progresses.
22. Well after 4 major surgeries and 5 years since Charlene has been on the back of a motorcycle to take a ride, she finally did it today. She decided to take a short ride to see how well she could tolerate the ride and she did well, we did about 30 miles on the V Star and she got a little numbbutt, but wasnt to bad, so she may do some riding at Vogel.
23. Just buy chance if you live in the area, end of August I'm riding through http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=17932+Southwest+29th+Lane,+Miramar,+FL+33029&daddr=Hardeeville,+SC+to:Murfreesboro,+NC+to:Cape+May,+NJ+to:Roselle+Park,+NJ+to:Plattsburgh,+NY&hl=en&sll=25.981931,-80.385589&sspn=0.014255,0.026736&geocode=FetzjAEdy2k1-ymTJ8Te6qPZiDEqSfRHlc6YXg%3BFaWp7AEdps4q-ymn1y27z5b7iDFPjGgv_XZugQ%3BFQcRLAIdsZFn-ymJFbgK9NGviTFh4Bc6k-XaXQ%3BFUgaUgIdawaJ-ymV9-46RFS_iTGi9HPhnPe3wg%3BFeN9bAIdB9GS-ymTiai-YrLDiTFw4pCtWvI3yQ%3BFV8PqgIdkDKf-ynXfqXoqDjKTDEVdFPFoeiwtQ&mra=ls&t=h&z=5
