  1. During a ride on my 2nd gen today, it occurred to me that the rear view mirrors are kind of small and insignificant for such a fabulous masculine machine. Has anyone replaced the originals with something that is functional, good looking and clear viewing? Thanks. Jdix.
  2. In an earlier thread, some of you guys gave me the idea to use a rear window defroster relay/timer for a manual over ride on the cooling fan on my scoot. Well, got it done. It works perfectly. On for 10 minutes then goes off by itself. I got rid of the OEM stereo and replaced it with a Pioneer CD stereo a while back. I left the mute and seek switches on the handle bars thinking I might have a use for them later. I modified the switch by taking out the mute switch and replacing it with an amber lens. I had to run a fourth wire to the switch to light the bulb that I took out of the relay. So the seek switch became the fan switch and the mute became the indicator light. I don't remember what kind of car I took the relay out of, but I think it was a mid to late 80's Lumina. You can see the number on the relay in the picture if you need it for reference later. At the same time I also replaced the thermostat and flushed out the old coolent and replaced it with some new stuff. Also the radiator cap didn't look so swell so I replaced it with an extra one I had on hand. The local auto dealer here is an Auto Value store, so the Napa number (156) wasn't much help. On another thread that some one else posted, another member posted a picture of the box that he got his thermoatat in from Napa. Along with the number 156, there was also a number 33708. We were able to use that number as a cross reference. We founs a Stant #13758 that fit perfectly. It was also a 180* thermostst same as the OEM stat.
  3. Hi everyone! I just aquired a beautiful 1986 Venture Royale 1300. The bike was my brothers and he stopped riding it a couple of years back. I'm in Georgia and the bike is currently still with him in Michigan. He just shipped me the carbs and I'm going to start going through them tomorrow. He replaced the diaphrams in it just recently and I guess didn't get the results he was looking for so he gave up. I'm wondering if a rebuild kit is available or necessary? Also, I'm wondering the do's and donts here. I'm not a mechanic but am pretty good with things like this. A good buddy of mine is a master mechanic and I will be at his house with these carbs tomorrow to start going through them. I'm wondering however, what will NEED to be rerplaced and what can be foregone? My mechanic friend forgets I'm broke and will have me buying EVERYTHING new. I need to only replace what needs to be replaced. I'm on a tight budget. Should all gaskets and o rings be replaced? Needles? Jets? etc? Once I get them all done I'll be flying to Michigan to put them back on, sync them and "hopefully" have a great ride back home. Any help or advice before I get started would be much appreciated. OH!!! I almost forgot. How do I know the diff between 1st gen and 2nd gen?? I'm sure I'll be reading and posting regular. I'm particular about this stuff and will want my new baby to be perfect!!! Thanks again in advance!!
  4. Hey Guys, My riding buddy has an 03 Venture Royal Star. It has quit on him. He was told it was the switch, so he bought a new one, and replaced the battery, and still nothing. Anyone have a suggestion on where we should look next.
  5. Goldwing so kicks Venture @ss in Cool Headlight department!!! Yes I bought an 2008 Venture and choked on the cassette player (Soon to be modded cubby hole). Every time I see the Venture Headlamp it reminds me of the 4 or 5 Headlamps I replaced on 1970-80 Autos over the years.... (now I'm 45). Does anybody make a cool replacement???
  6. Good morning all, I am having an issue with RPMs (I think). I was out riding around and everything seemed great and then I lost the "umph" from first gear. It acts like it wants to die at an idle and I basically have to wrap the throttle around just to get going at a normal pace. When it gets to just above 2000-2500 RPMs, it takes off and almost leaves me behind . So far, I have replaced the plugs and am running Seafoam in the gas and the oil. Can anyone point me in the direction of where I should go next? Thank you, Clay:bang head:

    Insurance claim

For those of you that have been through having your bike repaired through an insurance claim: 1. How does it work? 2. Will they "low ball" or fix it back to "good as new"? 3. Will they replace the "after market" stuff? 4. Will I have any "say so" in anything? Like, "Hey that part needs to be replaced!" 5. Will I have an option of keeping any of the old parts? I am with State Farm and have full coverage. Thanks for any help. The bike is in the shop and I am awaiting an "estimate". Shep
  8. I have a 2007 Royal Star Venture and have a pulse what feels like the front tire. At 50Km (30 miles)/hr on new pavement and going straight the bike front end pulses up and down not a wobble side to side. The dealership has checked the driveshaft, the bearings in the steering and I have replaced the two tires. It has improved somewhat but I can still feel it. Has anyone had this problem and can you suggest what I need to check next?
  9. The CLASS on my 84 kept giving me an E2 and or E4 error. The bike was not charging so I replaced the stator. Now the bike is charging and the CLASS is now working.
  10. I have a 86 venture and the problem is I can't get spark returning to the spark plugs. Myself and Dokon have replaced the coils, plugs, the tips on the wire into the plugs, I think it is called the ignition coils ( what goes under the battery box that the coils plug into). We have tried everything it seems we get spark going on but coiming out we get nothing so the bike won't start. Took it to my bike mechanic and he again replaced the coils which I told him I already replaced. He told me that was the problem since no spark was coming down to the plugs. Well he fried the replaced ignitor box and I guess the circuit box in it. He is now stumped and said he doesn't know what it might be and I might have to use it as a part bike. Go figure I only have 100,000 miles on it so I am asking if anyone has had this problem I don't want to park my bike out I love it. He said they only other thing it might be is a bad short on the bike somewhere. Thx, Meatloaf:crying:
  11. I finally replaced the original front Dunlop D404 after 18,497 miles. I was set on Metzler I have used them in the past with good results. However after reading many post on that matter here I was leery about them. The Venture is my first bike of this size and weight so I decided to go with the Dunlop Elite3. Has anyone switch from the D404 to the Elite3? It there any difference in handling better or worse? How about mileage? I am used to getting a few miles from my tires.
  12. If anyone is interested in purchasing OEM exhaust please let me know. I figure I would ask you all before posting them on eBay. I used the exhaust for my 600 mile break in, then replaced them with RoadHouse slip-on's. They are in mint condition (no scratches, etc). After a recent trip to Chattanooga with 19 Harleys, I ended up replacing my 08 Venture with an 09 Street Glide. Great bike!!
  13. For the pasted 3 weeks, I'd start the bike, let it warm up, then take of for a ride. with in 5-20 miles, the bike would stall. wait a few minutes, and the bike would restart. and ride fine all day. The first time, I brought it in, and drained the tank & replaced the fuel filter. the third time it happened, I brought it in for service. Turns out the fuel pump gets hot, and stops fuctioning under warranty it was replaced. we rode it yesterday for 250 miles, no problems.......Yet.... I have 28,430 miles on her so far
  14. So a couple weeks ago I broke down on a trip and a local shop replaced the ECU/ignitor on my Kawasaki Vucan. After replacing the unit they discovered the source of the problem was that some of the wires under the tank (lots of engine heat) cracked open or broke and shorted out the ECU. So in order to get me on my way without any more delay they spliced wires into the harness. Everything has been fine so far but before I paid the bill the service manager let me know that because the entire wiring harness was not replaced it was possible that the problem could recurr at some time and recomended that I have the harness replaced when I get home. So the question is: Bite the bullet and have local dealer replace the harness or Replace the harness myself or Try to redo the repair by soldering in replacement wires and insulating or ? This was an $800.00 repair and I am of limited $$ I appreciate all advice from you folks as you have saved my bacon more than once getting my old 83 Venture back up and going.
  15. I need someone whos very well versed in the RSV charging system to step in here. I have had this charging system issue on and off since last summer. A new rectifier last year solved the problem. I had also replaced the sidestand switch. This year the stator went and I replaced it with the higher output one from Buckeye Performance. Still had an issue so I went ahead and replaced the rectifier again. The bike ran fine for a few hundred miles then it began discharging again. I got it home and replaced the battery with a new, higher powered battery and still the bike is discharging. At 2500-3000 RPM's the DMM reads 12.10 V. I am at a total loss now. I will say that from the time I noticed the gauge flashing red I had about a 40 mile trip back home. A few times the bike began charging again then went back to flashing red. All connections are clean and tight and contact points are lubed with dielectric grease. So, anyone here got any ideas....Since I got the stator from Buckeye, RickH, you have any ideas? Squid, Muffy..Goose?? :bang head:
  16. I was cleaning out the rear trunk the other day and noticed cracks in the ABS where 3 of the mounting bolts are located. Has anyone else had this problem and if yest any issues getting it replaced on warranty? Thanks
  17. I have a red 2000 VGenture with 53,000 miles on it. Bike is in good shape. Runs great, has had regular service intervals. The deal with this bike is when it was new it was dropped at low speed and was damaged. The owner who bought it had a replacement policy so the bike was replaced for him, then repaired and sold with a rebuilt title. The only part the original owner said was replaced was the left hand frount crash bar and the left hand saddle bag was repaired. The fairing has a couple of small cracks in it, that the second owner, who i bought from, told me he did when he let it fall over in the carport while cleaning it. Not done in the first mishap. Thanks Gregg
  18. I've noticed that I am not the only one with this problem, but our Virginia Flag which is typically in the upper right hand corner of a posting has been replaced by some nonsense. Any mods know what happened or how to fix this? Thanks in advance... TTW
  19. Can anyone tell me where the signal pick up for the tachometer is on an 84 Venture Royale? I'm having "issues" with the engine missing and choking off when operating at low RPMs. It misses at higher speeds as well when I try to "jump on the throttle". The problem seems to coincide with an erratic tach indication at low RPMs. Thanks, Scott P.S. I replaced my Igniter Unit Assembly two weeks ago and everything was working great. Last weekend, while on a 200 mile ride it started acting up.
  20. Like the little dog said when the train ran over it's tail: It won't be long now! The project that Matt and I have been working on is coming together after it had been sitting idle collecting dirt dabber's nest and pine straw for the past eight years. Problem started when he lost the seal on anti dive valve and lost fork oil in front shocks. He let a buddy work on who let it fall over in his shop which broke the stator cover where the shifter rod penetrats it taking the shifter linkage out. So then it sat in the drive-way, out in the rain, full of bad gas, for eight years. Like I said collecting dirt dabbers and pine straw. We managed to get it pushed up onto a trailer to get it hauled over to my house where it has been for the past few months in various states of disassembly. Matt and his wife Charlotte have been very patient with me while I took a month off to Sturgis and to ride around in the wild west on my latest adventure. So when I got back it was time to buckle down and get back to work. So.... We drained the fluids removed the side covers and had them dipped and polished Went through the electrical system cleaning and checking electrical contacts removed and rebuilt the carbs changed out the fuel filter fixed the anti dive valve replaced the fork oil replaced the clutch perch and slave cylinder Bleed the clutch system and recharged replaced the covers new oil filter and oil new brake fluid cleaned and repaired all the plastic body parts Synched the carbs In the morning we are going to rebuild rear brake caliper and as soon as we get the brakes right put the plastic back on. I expect that we will be riding tomorrow. :7_6_3[1]: Before and after pictures to follow tomorrow. I quess next project will be to find a job. I've about milked this last motorcycle adventure vacation which has lasted six years. Just hope I can find a motorcycle job,
  21. I am in the process of buying a 90 Venture Royal with under 20K miles from out of state (the Phoenix area) and plan on flying in and riding it home to the Seattle area. The bike has been at the mechanics for several weeks getting a complete going over. They have fixed leaky fork seals and petcock replaced all the brake pads and fluids. New battery, cleaned and serviced the carbs and a number of other smaller issues. The tires are reported to have good tread but are about 6>8 years old so I plan on having those replaced before I make the ride back. I just learned that there may be a problem with the air shock system (CLASS?). I’m not sure what exactly but my guess is that it is not allowing you to adjust the air pressure. I have no experience with the 1st gen Venture’s my questions is. Can you still ride the bike if the CLASS system doesn’t work? Can you manually pump up the shocks and just leave them at that setting? My other option is to have the bike shipped to me which is actually a bit cheaper, but not nearly as much fun as a 1500 + mile ride home through some “new to me” states. Thanks Al
  22. I know this should be listed in the for sale section. But I want to get this out there. Long story short. My bike ran out of gas in the Tip O'neil Tunnel here in MA. After a little more than half an hour a state trooper and flat bed came along. Unfortunately the driver of the flat bed did not tie down the bike correctly. After leaving the tunnel and pulling into the state police barracks parking lot (it is close to the tunnel) the bike tipped over. The right side of the fairing, along with associated parts got wrecked. Luckily the bike has crash guards. The damage is mostly cosmetic. I simply don't have the time or money to put into getting the bike back into shape. I did file with the state and they totaled the bike. I got what I paid for the bike. Sadly it will cost more to repair the bike. Also I lack storage space. To to it off I am fixing up my house to sell. I simply got lots going on now. The engine runs strong and has lots of life left in her. I road her back and forth to work most every day. From Attleboro to Cambridge and Waltham. I hate to let her go, or part her out. but right now it's the best thing I can do. I can't find the title, so I am going to fill out the paperwork to get a new one. But if you are looking for parts that would not be a problem. I have posted some of the work I had done. Along with pictures (She don't look quite the same now). Link to pictures - [/url]http://necrotechandbytch.com/~dusk/venture/ Some of the work that has been done. All four carbs were rebuilt. Replaced the linkage too. Complete tuneup. Wires plugs etc. Rebuilt the forks. Replaced gear shifter. New head gaskets. Replaced the exhaust collector. Replaced that star washer and associated parts. New tires. Metzler New stereo and speakers. Added extra lights. And much more. The bike is at my mechanic. You can call him and ask about the bike. He did all the work. 23. I need to replace my stator at 68,000 miles and was wondering if this is normal or what the average mileage was for a stator replacement.. If you've replaced your stator please respond with your mileage.
  24. Can anyone out there suggest a safe solvent to rinse out the fork tubes on my 83 (with 86 forks) I did an on the road repair and temporarily replaced the fork oil with ATF. Now I want to rinse them out before I refill with new fork oil. Ideas anyone?
  25. I would appreciate your thoughts on this as I have a few questions, once again. Apologize for my ignorance upfront. - I can get warranty work at any Yamaha dealer I choose, correct, and not just the one I purchased the bike from? - When I got the bike home, first off it was really dirty, when I washed it yesterday and got it good and clean, I noticed a large scratch running all the way across my windshield….how should I go about getting that replaced, or can it be replaced since I already took delivery of the bike? If I can get it replaced would that be a warranty item? - I notice when I am decelerating the exhaust sputters some, not backfiring, just kind of like it is coughing (if that makes sense). I also noticed it does this when I rev’d in the garage yesterday. - How do I know if they even prepped the bike before I took delivery? My thoughts are all they did was roll it from the show room out to front of the building and wait on me to pick it up. Sorry for the questions, but this is a new bike and I want to make sure I get it off to a good start, and I simply do not trust these motorcycle dealers…at least not the ones around here. Thanks again for your help. jkt
