  1. I have been researching this for weeks now. and I have one on it's way to me... the Yaesu FTM-10R dual band water and dust proof motorcycle radio. It does 2 meter, 440, has a FM/AM receiver, allows ipod input and can wire up to two headsets and has intercom between them as well as audio sharing. It also has a stereo audio amp to drive my speakers in the faring. On second gens it looks like it would fit in the cassette location. on first gens it can pretty much mount anywhere. This will allow me to stay single antenna and still feed my ham radio hobby. and if I want to be "naughty" I can mod the radio for Marrs and CAP operation and transmit/recieve on the FRS frequencies to talk to the other guys in the riding group. 440mhz on low power is 3 watts, so if you stick to the high channel numbers and get a GMRS license you will be "technically" legal. just transmitting on a radio without the correct FCC type certification.
  2. Tuesday I stopped by my local GM dealer to have the oil changed on the Suburban. In the past I usually tried to hit the place early...around 7-7:30AM. Any later and it's a zoo. I had to have some blood drawn at 8, so decided since I was in the neighborhood to fight the crowd and git'r done. Pulled to the sevice area around 9 and there was only 3 cars in line. Cool!! Well... in the next hour they didn't have more than 4 cars pull in. You could have shot a canon off full of grapeshot and not done any damage. Utter/McKinley's Morturary. I had no idea it was that bad. Then on the way back home I heard on the radio that GM was preparing to file bankruptcy in the next month or two. I personally don't see how this dealer will survive even that long..... They did have a used F350 4x4 'Harley Branded' Pick-up out on the lot that was really nice. Wished I had the bucks... Oh well... dream on!!....
  3. I have had radio problems for about a year now. The buttons will stop working when in heavy rain but would dry out and start working again. I have taken it apart and drained water out of it. Then I sealed it with sealicone sealer, big mistake that just kept more water in it. So I took the sealer off and drilled two drain holes in the bottom. It helped some, the radio would dry out faster. I'm getting it ready to ride and the memo button will not let me set stations. I have it all apart and see nothing wrong. I thought of putting it in the oven to see if needs drying out. again a temporary fix. So I'm looking for any help on how to fixes this problem with out changing radios. I've been spending a lot of money this year on maintance and upgrades. So a little savings would help out. Thanks Jerry:fingers-crossed-emo
  4. Does anybody have a broken radio control unit laying around? I lost (broke) the volume knob off of mine. Of course, you can't just replace the knob, you need to replace the whole unit - to the tune of $600+!! Any help is much appreciated!
  5. I have a cycle comm 1200 CB radio and after years of service with no trouble I now have a whine in the CB and the AM / FM . has this happned to any one. It dose have a NF-721 noise filter don't know if it has gone bad or if something else has happend. The NF-721 is not made any more but I do have a filter coming from airrider that they say has replaced the 721. Can I check any more then just the noise filter If you have any tips you can E-Mail me @ gjhutter@hotmail.com or I will check back in a few Thanks all 1st gen's ROCK:Venture:
  6. Hey Y'all, I've had a persistent problem with engine rpm-related noise in the radio and intercom, both thru the speakers and headsets. I've posted here and there on the subject. I had the noise improve a little when I improved the grounding on the bike. But it was still significant. Well, I just pretty much fixed it. The factory has 3 noise-reducing capacitors installed: two in the radio noise filter (one for system hot, the other for battery back-up (hot all the time)), and the third near the voltage regulator. Each cap goes from hot to ground and bleeds off noise (AC signal) but doesn't short out the DC power. They say caps dry out and don't work as well as they age. Well, mine are 22 years old! So I went to Radio Shack and bought two 2200 microfarad caps and one 4400. I then bought two more 2200's after I nearly blew one up and ruined them by wiring them in backward and then yanked them out when I heard the gurgling - live and learn :-) I put the 4400 near the regulator and the 2200's at the radio near the existing noise filter, and wired them as I said, from hot to ground. The noise is nearly gone - not completely, but I wonder if the remaining noise could be normal as it's very small. Certain things increase it, as they did before, but on a lower level: Setting the Headphone Attenuator on the handlebar at Max gives a little noise that almost goes away if I set it on the big dot just below Max. The Auto Volume circuit introduces noise. If I have it all the way down it goes away, and it increases steadily as I turn this feature more sensitive. There's a slight hiss in the system even with the engine off - just par for the course I guess. If I crank the Auto Volume and the Headphone Attenuator both up to Max, the noise is still less than what I had before with much more conservative settings. As long as music is playing, I cannot hear the noise at all. In totally quiet times and with the knobs set to contain the noise, I still can't hear it unless I'm REALLY trying. I'm very pleased, been waiting 3 years to do this! The caps are about 5 bucks each, whether you fry them or not! Very good solution. Thanks to GeorgeS for suggesting it! Jeremy
  7. The radio on the 87VR has lost alot of vol. It will not get very loud. Any ideas????
  8. Anyone got a CB for a 1st gen. they would part with? Squelch pot on mine is shot so I can either listen to CB or radio but not both at the same time.
  9. Well, I got a cheap garage remote off of fleabay and took it apart. The battery was 3volt and I confirmed that with my multimeter. I want to hard wire the remote into the motorcycle electrical system. (No need to replace batteries) I went to Radio Shack (I know, radio shack is not a good place to buy stuff, but it was convenient) and they had two types of voltage regulators. One was a 5 volt regulator and the other was a programable regulator. I purchased the 5 volt regulator thinking that most IC's are 5 volt. Well, the voltage regulator didn't work. I confirmed 5 volts at the remote and the polarity was correct, but the remote circuit must have some sort of limiter on it. I disconnected the 5volt regulator and reconnected the 3volt battery and the remote worked fine. Reconnected the 5 volt regulator and it didn't work. Fortunately I didn't fry the remote board. However, I will have to go back to radio shack and get the programable voltage regulator. I have been taking pictures, when I am done I will post a write up.
  10. Hi, Bought another 84 first Gen last summer. The factory radio was out and a nicely installed radio /CD player had been installed in it's place. The PO told me that he could not get the radio to work and thought maybe it was bad... I really did not care all that much last year, but over the winter I decided to check it out. Could not get it to power up... Took it to the radio repair shop , the guy tested it and it worked fine.. Home.... of course not... Situation.. there are 3 wires coming from the noise filter box. Red, yellow and Black. The Radio guy told me yellow -- power all the time for memory red- from the ignition Black ground.. Sounds simple right... however cannot get anything to work I'm an electronics idiot and thought someone on here might have more knowledge.. Thanks, Clay
  11. Last year while riding the squelch on my CB quit working.Turning the squelch knob has no effect. Now when riding I have to either listen to radio or CB. If i turn on CB it over rides radio. Took CB out and checked all connections. Took bottom plate off CB to check internal connections all seemed good. Any ideas before I have to bite the bullet and buy another CB?
  12. I recently purchased a 87 VR. The PO of this bike addecd a cig lighter, which runs directly to the battery. While this wire is hooked up the memory light on the radio stays lit, along with a small red light on the radio, when disconnected they go out, Yes this is all while the key is in the off position. I am not sure what one has to do with the other, hopefully someone here can help. Thanks in advance. Kurt
  13. Hey everyone, I have a question about XM radios. If you buy a small XM radio unit can you use it in/on both bike and in car/truck? Would you have to buy two antennas to make this happen? I have an 06 Chevy that has Built in XM that I do not use and was wondering if the antenna could be unpluged from the trucks radio and used on the radio that will be used on the bike? Sorry if this sounds crazy, just would like to be able to use one XM radio for both bike and truck. Dennis
  14. I just took out the battery and charged it. When I put it back in the radio doesn't play through the front speakers. I can barely hear it from the right rear speaker even up at max vol level. My bike is the 2000 venture mm.
  15. I went to start my 07 RSV and the battery had gotton to low to start it well i had to go and buy a trickle charger put it on the bike for a few hours charged the battery and started the bike. now i dont have any radio????? is there a fuse that may have blown? has this happened to anyone else??? HELP cant live wih out the radio:bang head:
  16. Radio won't come on and just wanna make sure I have checked all that needs to be checked before going to dealer. - - -Radio fuse {10 amp} is not blown. - - -All connections are okay. It is my assumption that since those two things are spot on; then, the radio is kaput, there is nothing else to check and it is time to take the booger to the dealer.....Right?
  17. On my '89 VR I want to replace the radio with an after market model. It is the Jensen model HD5112. I want to hook it up to play thru the speakers and also the headsets. Any ideas? Should I cut off the 5 pin wire from the factory radio and splice it to the aftermarket one and play it thru the amp? Will this get the sound thru the headsets? This radio has inputs for MP3, wma, USB, SD Card, ipod and sat. radio. I really want to use this radio. Any help will be appreciated. Chuckles
  18. Do any of you use the XM radio thru the Garmin 550. If so where did you get your antenna (GXM 30) and how much did it cost. Do you get good reception with it and any troubles with it. Thanks for the info. Lyle
  19. Ok so here is my problem. I just got my GXM-30 on Saturday. I promptly signed up for XM radio and XM weather. XM Radio was on before I got back to the bike from my PC and I am still waiting on the XM weather. I called the number the XM operator gave me this morning (because they don't work on the weekends) and they gave me yet another number to call. Called them and they said they would send an activation signal down and to leave the radio on for 20 minutes. Well I left it on for 30 minutes and still no weather. I seem to remember seeing somewhere that it could take up to 12 hours before the activation signal makes its way to the radio. Anybody have that happen to them? If I turn the key off and go to battery power the XM radio of course will not work but when I turn the key on if I am on the page menu/xm where you see the XM button in the upper left I will briefly see an XM weather button pop up. Hitting it makes no difference and it goes away after 1 or 2 seconds even if it's not hit. I don't know if that is just natural function of the Zumo/GXM even without the XM weather subscription or if there is something evil lurking in my system. I also go to the menu/tools/subscriptions/XM radio page and it shows my Radio ID and the fact that I am subscribed to XM radio with 217 channels, but the data subscription says none. Thanks in advance. BTW as a side note, I rode in today with the XM radio and the Sirius radio on, both on the same channel and the ENTIRE ride I had XM signal strength of 3 bars and Sirius has at best 2 bars and for most of the ride 1 or no signal. It was actually nice and comforting to get the XM programing back. Now that they have Sirius channels I see no reason to have Sirius at all since their equipment seems to be inferior.
  20. Looks like this might be a nice option for anybody without a stereo that wishes to add one. http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-radio/jensen-jhd910-radio/
  21. Straight No Chaser. Heard them on the radio and had to find them on the net. http://video.aol.com/video-detail/straight-no-chaser-performs-12-days-of-christmas/1702788905/?icid=VIDLRVENT01
  22. One of the many winter projects I have is to fix (Hopefully!) my radio. The Mem light is on constantly, and you can't set any stations. I have to pull the radio apart to see what's up, and to clean it. Any words of wisdom before I start???
  23. I just recently bought a standard first generation Venture that a previous owner installed a radio and speakers in. The radio is good quality but the speakers might have sounded good at one time but leave a lot to be desired now. Two questions, what is a good reasonably priced speaker to use and how difficult is the job of putting new speakers in the Ventures faring. Thanks in advance for the help and information. Mike
  24. Ok folks, these are what the bike used to look like, (blue) and this is what I have done so far. Keep in mind that it's a work in progress, with a garage paint job. I'm pretty happy with it so far. Now waiting on Christmas to be over so I can spend more money. It still needs a new windshield, battery, Luggage rack, a set of lights for Squidleys brackets, and waiting on a set of Macs. Took out the radio, Going to go with Sirius Satelite. So I also need a set of headsets as well. Maybe Santa will bring me some of this stuff. I hope the pics are visible. Happy Holidays Everybody.
  25. looking for the kind that clamps to the handlebar and has 1 or 2 swivels with a mounting plate or whatever to mount my XM radio.... someone got a link for where I can get one of these? Thanks
