  2. You wanted some pics of the foot wings on the bike. Here ya go. Any questions....ask away. Mike
  3. Hey guys. I asked these questions on the Sportster.org forum, but got no responses. Maybe because my avatar is the same one I use here (VMAX). I hope that's not the case. I also went to our area Harley dealer today and spoke to the service dept. He really tried to assist me, but could not offer any measurements either. At least he tried. Now, any of you Sportster owners who can take some measurements for me or answer some of my questions will go straight to #1 on my list. So, below is what I posted on Sportster.org. "O.k. Maybe I was asking the wrong question, or in the wrong way, in my previous post. So, I think I am barking up the right tree this time. Please bear with me on this. My 2003 883R was lowered by the previous owner, but I don’t like the loss of travel and the stiffness. I want a better ride and to return the sporty-ness of my Sportster. I think it was lowered with Progressive springs. Looks like the stock damper rods were probably replaced with shorter ones (from a Hugger maybe?). Now I need stock damper rods (and maybe fork tubes) to install because I want to return the forks to stock height. I have a couple of questions: On the 883R bikes, what is the stock distance between the bottom of the lower triple tree fork clamp and the top of the chrome dust cover ring on the forks? Right now, with my bike in lowered style, that distance is only 3 1/2 inches. Looking at other Sportsters, I think that maybe should be about 5.5 inches or more, but I don’t have any Sportsters near me to measure. So I need some help please. Also, what length are the stock damper rods, top to tip (and if you know, the length of the shock tubes also) of a 2003 883R? And, can anyone offer a source for the stock damper rods? Or, does anyone have any that they have taken out when lowering their bike and they want to part with them? Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks a mucho gazillion!" Rusty
  4. Well I am sure that you all will tire of my questions before long but I have a few more here for you. First The head light, sometimes the low beam works and sometimes it don't. Thought it was the start button but have gone through that with the help of Dingy's thread on it and still have the problem. I have power at the switch all the time(when not pressing the starter) but not all the time at the light. Second one here, it had a full tank of acient gas (paint thinner now) that I was able to get most siphoned out, but there is about 1/2 gallon that I just cant get to. Will a can of sea-foam put in with fresh gas be OK? Third, I have seen it posted to relocate the TCI to a more accessible spot for future reasons, however when I set it up above the battery the cover will not go on. Can I mount it in the fairing? Fourth, I found at Oriellies a 12 spot spade fuse box, my current one has 6 (I believe) Should I stay with a smaller one or can the 12 spot one work (hope so it is being discontinued and is only $10). I think that is about it for now. Thank You, Shaun
  5. will a tank cover and windshield off an 85 fit my 83.
  6. I have been working and playing a lot with my 86 Venture and a few things have come to mind and I have questions to ask all the real smart folk here. Cuz I know you know the answers. 1.) Can I install a brighter headlight .... like one of these super brights I see in cars. If so anyone know what matches up from the auto parts store? 2.) The "drain" valve on the cooling system under the radiator is leaking a bit. Is there an O ring seal in there I can replace or do I need to find a new valve? 3.) I need a new reflector strip that goes across the trunk lid because mine has a patched hole in it and the DMV will not give me collectors plates unless I replace it with an intact one. Does anyone have one they could sell me? 4.) I had my carbs adjusted and the guy doing the work said they were all within "1 inch" he got them within 1 cm. He said that the 1 inch was within specs but WOW what a difference an inch makes. Seem right? 5.) The odometer on my bike reads 30,000 Kilometers(18,640 mi). When I bought the bike about 3 years ago it had 10,000 on it. I know I need to ride more, but the guy doing the valves said he thought it unlikely from what he saw that the bike has 130,000 on it. Is it possible I found a bike that old with so few kilometers on it? I got it from a dealer that had bought the dealership including the bike and he had no knowledge of it's history. I will ask more questions later as I think of them if you do not mind. thanks everyone in advance. Kevin
  7. Hello all I obviously am new here as this is my 1st post. I am in the process of purchasing an 07 model. 1st Question: Can anyone tell me the proper pressure for the front and rear shocks? I read the front takes no more than 7 and that 3 is a good place to start but I havent found anything on the rear. The bike has been sitting for a couple of months so I will probable need adjusting. 2nd question: What years are the 1st generation vs the second generations that I see people talking about and what are the differences? 3rd question: Is there a 3rd generation? 4th question: Is there any major issues I should look for or check. the bike has 40,000+ miles. 5th question: Is there a limit as to how many questions I can ask per post? Thanks in advance as I am sure there will be more questions to follow. Tom PS: my presently my other bike is a beautiful 97 Honda Valkyrie Tourer. I recently sold a 06 HD Street Glide. I've also owned a 03 Honda ST1300, a 03 Honda VTX 1300, a Honda 750 ACE, and my 1st bike was a Yahama 400 way back when gas reached $1.00 a gallon. My wife rides a 04 HD Fatboy.

Ya have read the questions and answers, this guy is a riot... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=400153979748&ru=http://search.ebay.com:80/search/search.dll%3F%26rvr_id%3D145166384238%26satitle%3D400153979748%26fvi%3D1&viewitem#ht_1430wt_739&rvr_id=150435078687
  9. hello everyone. i just purchased a 2000 venture and i have a few questions. i love the bike and after i took my wife for a ride in the country and then on the freeway, she was fine under 60 mph but over that she is getting beat to death with the wind. the windshield on the bike is a show chrome after market windshield. my question is, is the windshield need to be taller or lower. i am 6'6'' and 230 lbs. I have a yamaha raider also and she don't complain about the wind on it. but on the venture she sets up higher. how can i correct the problem. the windshield is 13'' tall from chrome trim at the bottom of the windshield to the top of the shield. and it is 31'' wide. any help would be appriciated
  10. Well, I took a few hours this evening to give a friend of mine a hand moving. She had a bunch of bulky and heavy items she couldn't get her self, so no big deal. Got them moved to her new place. On my way out, we were chatting in the front of her building when another young lady walked up. We all three talked for a few minutes (apparently this gal is the mother of three young boys). I saw one of them bolt out towards my bike and was a little uneasy because I didn't want him to get hurt. I got close behind him and saw his curious little hands and big eyes looking at himself in the [dirty] chrome parts that are just the right height for him to see him self. Despite the 'don't touch the shiny parts, they are really hot and WILL hurt you' the boy looked at me and said he really liked it and asked if it was mine. I responded "thank you very much, and yes it is". I mentioned again that he needs to take a step back because it is hot and it will hurt him. Well, he asked some other questions about it (as a curious little 4 year old would do) and I started fishing around in my trunk to get my helmet and stuff out so I could take off while he was once again was drawn to the shiny parts. Despite the additional reminder of you can look but don't touch, he turned and looked at his mom then looked back at himself and with his little pointer finger very quickly poked at the image of him self in the side of the cover that encases the clutch basket (all of this was within a matter of seconds and I couldn't get to him in time to stop him). My bike had sat there for no more than 10 minutes after being ridden for probably about an hour. It wasn't really hot, but it was hot enough that he learned his lesson. He didn't cry but he wasn't happy about it either. Anyways, by this time the other one was out asking questions too. They both wanted to go for a ride, but settled for sitting on it. They got a kick out of that. In addition to sitting on it, I suggested that if one of them wanted to hear something cool, push this little black button... The air-horn blasted and boy that surprised them both (and the mother too). Anyways, the 10 or 15 minutes I spent answering their questions and letting them ooo and ahh, really reminded me of what it was like to be that age and be so excited to head to my grandparents house. I would always get a ride on my grandpa's wing when we went over there and I always remember how excited my grandpa was when I would ask him about his bike. These are not my kids, and I am a ways away from having kids but seeing how excited they were about my bike brought back some memories and I just thought I would share.
  11. You are invited to meet us for a ride to Parkersburg WV on Sun-Sept. 19 for a meet and eat. We will be coming thru your area I believe around 11-11:30. 12. Keep in mind I know almost nothing about these bikes (so far) but I have a vast background in building cars so I'm not completely stupid. I've already started doing a few mods to the RSTD but I have a couple of questions that I couldnt find the answers for.... and yes I searched. Mine is and 06 and it has cruise control and I've already done the AIS plugging and Jasons mod. Now when I did Jasons mod I connected both runners on each side... but in the write up it mentioned I had to T into 1&2 to keep the cruise working, also it mentions T-ing into 3&4 for the ignition module to work right.... Does the 06 need both of these or did I do extra plumbing for nothing??
  13. I have signed up with the Indiana Patriot Guide Riders. My questions are, how many of you belong to both the National and a State orginization? How many to just one of them, State or National? Are there any advantages or disadvantages to belonging to both or just one? If you belong to both do you fly/display the National Patriot Guide flag, decals, etc. or the State items? Or maybe some of both? Thanks in advance for your response(s).
  14. I've been talking with Dave, over at Wide Whitewall Tires (Hobbycar.com) and he said he can have a run of WHITEWALL car tires specially made for the VR Darksider Members interested! They will be whitewall on BOTH sides, and they WILL be car tires in a 165-80-15 or 155-80-15. He asked me to get an idea of how many people might be interested, and he will get back to me on pricing info. SO- If it's something you're interested in, let me know. Either reply to the post or PM me. If you have any questions you'd like me to ask him, feel free, and I'll email him on Monday with the list of questions gathered! So far, one of the questions I plan on asking him, since they are manufacturing the tire, is can they put the VR logo, or the mottoe somewhere on the tire.. That'd be sweet... Maybe overkill, but who cares?!
  15. Couple of questions about the new unit: 1) With NavWeather, it shows you the current radar image. Does it indicate direction of storm movement and speed as well? 2) The Garmin website says it is NOT geocaching friendly. Just wondering if it can also be used on battery power for things like mountain biking routes, hiking routes, etc. Thanks for the info...JR
  16. Rotella T6 FULL Synthetic. I understand this is now within the specs of the Yamaha Warranty and can now be used on the Venture. So my questions are: (1) How many of you have used the Rotella T6? (2) If you are getting it at Walmart, what OIL FILTER are you getting there? (3) Are there ANY special considerations when changing the oil. It looks pretty straight forward...1 draing plug, and one oil filter. Thanks. Wally
  17. Cougar (AKA Jeff) road over this morning to help me install the Polk 401's I got. I had not had the bike apart and asked Jeff a few questions. To answer my questions he says why don't I just come over and help. Well I just said "well slap me silly and call me...." OK, I didn't say that, more like YES PLEASE!!!! Jeff was here at 7:00am, (cool ride over, but said it was good) and with his help and knowledge of how things came apart, I now have GOOD speakers in place of my cracked / broken ones! And they sound goooooooooood! Many thanks to Jeff for going out of his way to help a fellow member! "Hint Hint Boss" Thanks again, Bryan
  18. Folks...I'm in Cannon Falls, MN this week at our semi-annual sales meeting. LONG days this time. Then they took my laptop for the past two days to do some upgrades with the software so I've been unable to even get online until tonight since early Wednesday morning. Sorry if I have missed any questions here or via email. I'm working through about 1500 emails right now but if you have emailed me and I don't answer within the next day or two, please try again. Headed back home tomorrow night and am READY.
  19. I have a couple of questions: #1: in the middle of the battery there is a wire coming out that has a resistor or something - I removed it when I took the battery out to charge. What might it be? Second: I need to bleed the clutch but I can't get the bleeder broke loose - any help here? Third: When I bought the bike - we jumped the bike and got it started. I charged it up for a few hours - and when I tried to start it I had a warning light and it just hummed. I had the kickstand down and in neutral. Perhaps the battery needs replaced - I put my volt meter on it and it was reading less then 7 volts - so I'm charging it overnight to see if I can salvage it. Thanks
  20. I am trying to remove the saddle bags on this 1st Generation. Do I use the ignition key for the locks to remove it? They work to open the bigs but don't seem to work to get the bags off the bike? Any suggestions. I'm sure asking a lot of questions on this bike!
  21. Here are some pictures of my new toy. She is an 86 Venture Royale, pretty well fully loaded, and low miles. I come from a background of touring on my 97 Kawasaki Concours. So, I am really looking forward to a bigger, fancier, touring bike. Should be shipped out on Friday, and arrive here in about 2 weeks. I am sure I will have many questions for the more experienced people here. http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr290/kevinkyzar/86%20Yamaha%20Venture/86Venture.jpg http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr290/kevinkyzar/86%20Yamaha%20Venture/86Venture2.jpg Hopefully, will not need to much "tech" help. Just clean it up, and go riding!
  22. I installed a 165-80-15 Nexen SB-802 on my TD yesterday and I went out and rode about 250 miles on it just to get a feel for it. I must say that I love it!! I'll gladly answer and questions. I posted the info on the DS tire data base.
  23. I didn't know if I should ask all the questions here (harder to search) or just ask one at a time...anyway, I decided to ask all at once and then at the end offer a suggestion. I have a brand new 2009 Royal Star Venture-S (11 miles on it now). 1. Like many of you, my CB antenna was mounted on the RIGHT side instead of the clutch side...Can I just SWAP the two antenna's or do they have to be reinstalled? Can they just be unscrewed and swapped? 2. Does anyone have a good WELL LIT picture of the inside of the fairing? I am especially interested in getting an image of the BACK of the cassette deck...and more specifically the AUDIO OUT in the back of the casette deck. 3. Dealer said to use premium gas...I take most on here use regular unleaded...correct? 4. Is the speedometer accurate (my VTX speedo was off by 10%)? 5. What is the CONSENSUS on tires for the Venture? 6. Does anyone have a link to a GOOD SMALL stickup light for the trunk? 7. Is there not an OEM riders backrest for the Venture? And if not, why not? I have seen the 3rd party vendors, but just curious about a YAMAHA backrest. 8. Has anyone used the High Beam Garage Openers...and how the heck do you connect it? Their instructions are terrible. And finally a suggestion. I know we have a FAQ...but how about a FAQ for NEWBIES. Simple easy questions in one FAQ that most NEW GUYS (and Ladies) ask everytime a new bike is bought... Thanks to you all so far for helping me as much as you have. I feel like a brand new rider with this bike even though I have been riding since 1979. I also admit I have some buyers remorse. I'm sure it's because I just haven't been able to ride (bike has been in the garage since the day I brought it home). So maybe once I can start riding, things will get a little better. Wally
  24. So I've put about 2000 miles on my 86 in the last six weeks. I LIKE IT! Alot more bike than an 83. But since I've only owned 83's (5) I have a few questions. 1. RPM. I'm at 4000 at 70 mph. Is that right? Seems high 2. Gas milage I'm only getting about 32mpg. I got about 40 on the 83's 3. Are the stator and clutch the same as the 83? 4. Fork tubes. Are the 86 and 83 the same? 5. Is the exhaust the same? 6. What is the BEST clutch setup to put in an 86. I ride hard with lots of weight and trailer Thanx for your help oh great venture guru's
  25. I guess scamming isn't limited to Ebay. I've been looking for a new or nearly new Tahoe and found a nice sounding deal on Autotrader with the truck advertised to be in Huntington, WV. I emailed a couple of questions last night and tried calling today, number not working should have been my first clue. This evenging I get the following email response which didn't answer either of my questions. Needless to say I provided him a few words in response. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Hi Dennis, The car is still for sale. The asking price is $28,800. It is located in Belleair Beach, FL and the VIN is 1GNFK13078R247309. The car is registered on my name and the title is clear (no lien). It is in great condition, no dents or scratches. It was always garaged and the regular maintenance was done in time. It wasn't involved in any accident and has never suffered any kind of damage. Also this is a non-smoker car. If you have any questions regarding the car or you want extra photos or the CARFAX report (for free) just let me know! I'm a pilot on cargo flights. My wife broke up with me recently because I'm always away from home. We just sold our house and split the money. This is the last thing I need to sell and split the money with her. Because I'm away most of the time I will not be able to deal in person. But I've already arranged the shipping and the title transfer anywhere in the US. I will pay the shipping fees. I want the payment to be handled by MSN Autos. They will keep the money until you will receive and inspect the car. You will have 7 days of inspection period. If the car is not like described you will have to ship it back on my expense and they will give you a full refund. This way, you will be able to inspect the vehicle before committing to buy it and I know that you have the money and you aren't just fooling around. Giving the nature of this transaction please note that my sale terms are final and nonnegotiable. In order to move forward I will need your full name, address and phone number. I don't want to offend you, but the car is priced for a fast sale so please if you intend to apply for a loan or financing do not reply to this message! Chris Larsen."
