  1. Hello, I am new to Ventures and I have just noticed after changing my oil that there is no oil pressure warning, just a level low warning. Hmmmm I find this very odd. I think this is the first vehicle that I have owned without a oil press light or gauge. Am I missing something?? Kim
  2. What are they there for? I heard somewhere that they were weights for balance. I was riding today and think I figured it out. While you are cruising with the cruise on just slide your hands to the end over those tips and it is like having risers or extensions. It takes lots of pressure off he shoulders and more relaxing. On long trips you can do this and not have the stabbing pain between your shoulders.
  3. How much air pressure do you guys run in the forks when you run solo on a RSTD? On my 86 VR, I found that no air worked best for me. (front end) If I decide to do the same on the RSTD, I plan on taking the air valves off so I can raise the tubes up 1" to lower the front end. That is why I am asking. As far as pressure in the rear, I have no idea what to run in this bike. Thanks, Steve
  4. My 86 Royale will hold the air pressure forever as long as I don't switch the key off accessories. As soon as I switch it off and back on again the pressure is gone. If there were any leaks I should see it drop but the pressure is maintained as long as I don't swith the key off. Can anyone offer an explanation? I am tempted to install manual valves on the lines that I can swith to the closed position after pumping the air into the suspension. It is the only problem that I have that prevents me from a complete restoration of my beloved bike. Chris
  5. hey i put new gaskets on mufflers where slips on. then checking them with engine running. i found the mufflers have three holes on the bottom which i thoight where drain holes . but they all three on both sides have pressure exhause leaks . is this normal .i have a 02 venture . and i am a half way self do it your self guy.
  6. OK, So I have removed my YCIS and plugged the ports, but what exactly does the sensor do that is has a vac line coming off of #1 (#2?) jug and runs up under the dash and hooks to the Pressure Sensor / Free Boost Sensor? I can't seem to find anything about it. Just wonder ing, and how does one test it?
  7. Hey all, This is my first post. Mostly cause there is 100 feet of 2 feet deep snow between my bike and the driveway, so even thinking of the bike depresses me:-) What a winter!!! ( I walked out to the shed this morning and the snow is rock hard. Hardly made a footprint so no hope of shoveling it) I really like this site. I have found answers to many questions just by reading the forums. I ride an '07 Midnight Venture. Love the ride. Had an '85 Wing before and there is no comparison. My wife doesn't hound me to pull over after an hour on the road any more. Some days I can't get her off it... Question is: What is a good pump to get for the air suspension? Especially the front. They are hard to get at and because the pressure is so low, just disconnecting the air hose changes the pressure drastically. Tried the dealer here but they aren't much help. Thanks, John
  8. Has anyone switched from the stock diaphram pressure plate to the Barnett Spring type pressure plate. If you have, did you change clutch discs as well or just the pressure plate? Were the results worth the expense for the conversion????
  9. I'm new to this site, but to riding ( 30 + yrs). In April ' 07 I purchased a new '07 Venture. After today I still have less than 5,000 miles on it. I've begin to notice a little unsteadyness in the front end lately. This may be hard to explain exactly what I'm talking about, but I'll try; I've checked tire pressure and its OK. There is also zero pressure in both forks. When riding the bike and going into a curve (lean) I noticed that the front end feels ( scince I can't think of any other word ) wobbely, however the bike maintains complete stability when I let go the bars ( on the straight-a-ways of corse ). When I got home I checked the front end by shaking it back and forth. It seems to feel that the front forks are some what like noodles and that the wheel is lagging behind the handle bars. I've checked thr steering as best I could and there are no signs of any loose parts. I'll recheck the tire pressure again, but if anyone else has experienced this problem and there is a fix, please let me know.
  10. getting excited ,got my winter project in full swing.it's my last hurrah for a custom bike. i think. it's my kaw zx-14. santa got me an air shifter, msd shift light, and extended swing arm for christmas.snowed in here in mo. so it's a good time to hang out in my shop.put the oil pressure gauge on this morning.kind of thinking about an orient express turbo.guess i'll never grow up,just keep getting older.lol
  11. Let me tell you a story about a man named Jed .. . oh, wait, wrong story... Let me tell you a story about suspension air pressure on an RSV... Many of you may remember that I crashed my 05 last summer when brand new tires slid out from under me in a curve. I picked up a barely used 07, but my cornering has never felt quite as good as it did on the 05 - nothing really wrong, but I didn't seem to hold a solid line in the big sweepers, and I sometimes found myself fighting the bars in the tight ones. I just assumed that was still some residual nervousness from my crash that I had to work through. Not so. I kept forgetting to to check the pressure in the forks, just assuming it was 0 (the way it comes from the factory. Even though I have my pump with me, I never think about it untill I am riding. Well, yesterday morning I finally remembered to check it before we went our riding - WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Some background - I'm a fairly big guy - 6'5", 230 lbs, and my passenger is 130 lbs. I have Leveling Links installed to raise the rear and stock size Avon Venom tires. I had the rear shock still set at 30 lbs (where I keep it when riding solo), so I pushed it up to 40. The front forks were at 8 and 8.5 lbs. Not only is that over the maximum, but not having them exactly equal is a BIG no-no. I dropped both of them to 6 lbs. These changes might not sound like much, but the difference in the handling is huge. The bike goes through sweepers like it is on rails now, and the twisties and ass-kisser turns are once again fun and comfortable. Just thought I'd pass on this experience for anyone who has not really checked thier suspension air pressures and found the right settings for their load and riding style - Goose
  12. When I put my 86 Royale on the centre stand and set the front and rear to low, medium or high the compressor pumps the pressure to the correct P.S.I and will hold it without loosing any air. As soon as I switch the key to any other position and back to check the pressure both fron and rear are at zero p.s.i. There is no error message on the display. Is the most likely reason for the sudden loss of air pressure when the keyk is switched off due to a bad solenoid? I have a friend with a spare and we are going to swap them to see what happens. I think that the ability to hold the pressure indefinitely with the key in the accessory position means that there are no plumbing or seal leaks. I hope that it is a solenoid as that will be an easy fix. Has anyone out there had a similar experience?
  13. i just install a oil pressure gage on my 86 and changed my oil , 15 - 40 rottla dino , no oil pressure !! bled the oil gage and oil filter , have oil flow but no oil pressure , any body know how much oil pressure we are supposed to have ?? i warmed the motor up a little run the rpm up to 2500 . i have a oil cooler and after market remote oil filter .
  14. A while back I posted about a failing Metzeler tire. Wizard said that I was running to low an air pressure. Although I never could access the page he referred to the customer service rep at Metzeler said 49 lbs. the second time I asked. I have recieved a new tire after a battle with them. I am willing to try again at the higher pressure. They need to improve their website. I would have been running at the higher pressure all along if I had known. The local dealer said the tire was defective and then after talking to Parts Unlimited who is the distributer fo the US he changed his tune and was trying to make me buy a new tire and send the old one off for inspection. I already had a Avon on the way so I put it on and and gave the old one to the dealer. We waited for a Parts Unlimited rep to come by and look at it. When he finally did he said it was road hazard and wasn't covered. I took back the evidence and called Metzeler. They said that with road hazard there would be evidence inside the tire. The tire is perfect on the inside and I knew I hadn't hit anything. After I told the Metzeler rep that he finally agreed to order me a new tire. I have come to the conclusion that I personally don't trust Parts Unlimited although it evidently is hard to deal with motorcycle stuff and not deal with them even if your not aware of it. It will probably be next summer before I need to mount the new Metzeler. I will watch it close and I am hoping that eventually I can post that it wore out normally.
  15. Well guys, I had been talking to Dan Stevenson about modifying his pillow top seat. At the time I told him that even though I had modified several RSV seats, I had never been into a pillow top version yet. But after what I saw from what Pat Hannon (jakenator6) had done to his, it was certainly not what expected. So I told Dan that I just happened to have a pillow top off my 2001 RSV up in my attic, so why didn't I just uncover it and see what I could do to make it better. It was just like Pat had shown where there were about 8 button hooks holding down the pillow top. And there was that layer of 1 1/4" foam covering the entire seat. And just like Pat explained I had to carefully tear it loose from the seat foam. But when I got if off, what I saw was a pretty sound foundation of base foam. And unlike the other RSV seats, this seat had a pronounced outer support built into the shape. On the other seats I usually have to cut the center down flatter just a bit before I start on the tailbone relief to provide this outer support. This seat already had this done in my opinion. So all I did to this seat was 1. cut the tail bone relief and 2. cut a curvature into the back of the seat. The back of the seat seemed to be more flat, putting pressure on the backside just above the crack . All the time I was cutting, I would put it back on the bike to see how it felt and this curve felt better. However, before I decided to put the cover back on I could clearly see that a layer of foam would be necessary to maintain the pillow top effect. So I used the old foam as a pattern to cut a new layer of memory foam (isolastic foam). The standard foam even though it appears to compress the same as even memory foam, it is more linear and pushes back across the entire area being compressed. Isolastic foam seems to compress more where there is more pressure and fills in where there is less pressure. In other words, it seems to fill in all the gaps. It also compresses to almost nothing under pressure but then springs back to it's original shape when the pressure is released. In finishing up, I glued the layer of memory foam to the seat foundation and then installed the cover using all of the button hooks to give it that pillow top effect. And after stapling the cover back on it looked pretty natural, but felt much better. How much better I don't know, which is why I'm going to give this seat to Dan Stevenson for a trip he is taking with his uncle to Montana later this month. Hopefully he will report back favorly or give me feedback to make any changes to my modification to the design of this seat. Attached is a picture of both the before and after of the pillow top seat. I just happened to have a 2005 RSV with a pillow top in my garage so this is a picture of both seats. The modified seat is on the bike where you should see the change to the tail bone area as well as the curved back. Stay tuned for more, Rick
  16. I noticed there is not a full set of teeth running round the clutch pressure plate, is that right. Original has this. Anyone seen this ?
  17. With the CLASS (air suspension) system on my 88 VR, I have been having some problems. They are: - Sometimes no power going to it and nothing happens. (Yes the Red/Blue wire haw power with the key in the ACC position) - Sometimes I get an E4 code - When it does finally work, I can pressurize the front and rear with the key switch in ACC. However when I turn the key from ACC to ON (or to OFF), I can hear air pressure released behind the seat when the key is put back in the ACC position. When I check the pressures, the rear pressure is where I set it but the front pressure reads zero (and from the ride, it is really at zero) What seems to make it go between these three modes is when I disconnect/reconnect the connector on the backside of at the control panel (right side of fairing) or wiggle the same connector a bit. Also, I just change the front fork seals and dust covers and didn't even touch the electronics or the mechnicals (pump, drier, valves, solenoids) for the CLASS system. Before I start taking things apart, does anyone have any quick and dirty ideas? I'm thinking there is a loose connector on the board and I may have a solenoid in the back that is sticking -- but I'm really new to the Venture and I'm just guessing at this point.
  18. OK - so the motorcycle guy replaces the front fork springs. Compressor runs, pressure builds up nicely and holds - BUT - there is no difference between low and high pressure on the front suspension. Front end bounces down just as easily on high pressure (17 psi) as on low pressure (7 psi) Previously I could see the forks extending when the pressure went up, and theren was a noticble differencem but not now. No error messages on the computer read out. 1987 venture royale. Any ideas about what went wrong? Or what to do for a fix?
  19. Well I took 83#2 out for an afternoon run to check out the gas milage. 83#1 was...no is.... getting 50mpg, and I've been leaning towards it for the trip to Ft Collins even though #2 runs stronger. So anyway after logging 68miles of a mix of 20% city and 80% highway at around 65-75mph I find I'm getting 41.5 mpg with #2. Not to shabby. Here's the deal. Both bikes need a little attention before taking off. #1 needs the dash pulled and gone thru. Dash lights, CPU resolder etc., but has progressives, all new clutch, and all new brakes. #2 has a leak in the rear shock somewhere and is not holding pressure, and second gear is just starting to jump/skip but if taken easy second can still be used. I will be pulling a Piggy Backer. I've got to make a decission soon in order to start rigging the hitch and doing the wiring. I'm not any good at last minute to-do's. Whacha think???
  20. The tires on my bike are not the originals, those were runflats. These are fairly new, but not runflats. My owners manual says the tire pressure should be 36lbs. The sidewall of the tire says max load is like 638lbs at 41lbs of tire pressure. So which do you go by? Or should I set it somewhere in the middle???........Don
  21. Has anyone tried to modify and to attempt to use the on board air compressor for the forks, rear shock and as a possible tire inflator? Or is not up up to snuff like not enough air pressure?
  22. Not much posted here that I can find on oil pressure issues with these bikes. Read the oil level indicator post. Appears not a concern, but have a high mileage unit and wonder if there is any experience out there with this.
  23. Attached are some pics of the new Venom X I mounted on the front of the '83VR a few months ago. I rode it lightly around town, and then about 750miles over a 4 day weekend at VWIII. I noticed a clunk when apply the front brake and while inspecting the caliper, play, and such, I ran into this on the side walls on the tire. I'd Venture to say there's about 1000miles on it since new. In Avon's defense the front tire pressure was about 10 pounds low when checked in Susanville, and I did ride it pretty hard while running up Hwy 395 after friday's group ride. Stopped for gas with Steve (hdhtr) and got a little carried away trying to catch up with the pack. My question is #1 can i expect this after running a tire low on pressure at high speeds.. 90+ in a couple of areas and #2 should I replace the tire or will it hold up?? I also noticed that on the sidewall the tire inflation should have been 50psi instead of the 40psi I thought was enuff. And should I just go ahead and bite the bullet and pick up a replacement?? Whatcha think???
  24. Hey everyone, Just took the Venture (83) up to West Va to ride in the mountains for the weekend. We did 1200 miles in three days!!!! It was the first over 100 mile trip that I have had the bike on. I noticed that around 80 MPH I would get a wobble that felt like the bike was flexing in the middle. The other way I could describe it was that feeling when you hit a rut in the road. Letting off the throttle would bring it back into control. I also noticed that it would do it on the mountain switchbacks around 65 MPH. I checked the front axel, brace and tire pressure (40 psi). I checked the rear axel, swingarm, shock pressue (35psi) and tire pressure (40 psi). Ichanged the dampining adjuster to "2". Now it seemed to get more tolerable after all this. I have not checked the front shock air pressure due to the fact that the line is still hooked up to the Class compressor. The rear line has been removed and fitted with a shrader valve. Could the lack of air in the front forks cause this? If so what should the pressure be in the front and rear shocks? Sorry about the long post. Thanks Ron B
