  1. After waiting 2 months for my OEM Yamaha chrome rails, they came and boy, they were purdy. Trying to put them on was not. The ends of both, where they tapped, were wallowed out. not enough thread to get bolt started. Spent greater part of the the day trying to find a 5mm bolt 2 5/8" long(or millimeter equilivent. Finally got frustrated with the whole ordeal and bought (2)-5 mm nuts and mig welded them to the ends of the rails. Screwed BOLT with nut attached into end of rail first to ensure proper alignment. But I wasn't done yet, I had to drill holes in chrome fittings 1/16th bigger to line up with their origional threads in all 4 end caps and chamfer. Good thing I had a pair of soft jaws for my vise. I dont mind paying for quality but these Yamaha rails are anything but. Even the 45 degree angles? were serrated like someone machined them with a broken end mill. And NO, I was not about to send them back after waiting 2 MONTHS for them.
  2. Would you believe I got a email this afternoon that was mailed on Jan. 9, 2010, almost three months late! What is the latest youall have gotten a email? tew47
  3. After 4 months of the bike being jacked up on the Carbon-one jack stand. I was able to take it out for a ride. I was starting to worry about ever getting it back together again. I feel more confident "getting into" the bike now. I haven't touched the engine except for plugs. But it looks like I'll have tobe checking the valves sometime in the future and maybe installing the stronger clutch but hoping that will be next winters project. Although I keep the battery charged. It was dead. A new battery I bought last July appears to have an internal short. Put the old (original) one back in and it fired right up. I was impressed, setting 4 months, pulled out the choke, hit the button and started immediately. I almost forgot what a pleasure it is to ride it. Ran great, didn't skip a beat. Next thing I knew I was putting in another tank of gas to swing it around and head the 160 miles back home. Dang! I love riding this bike! I'd like to thank you great folks on this forum for all the past posts and the tech section that helped me do the maintenance and the fixes you have shared. I could not have done it without your unknowing help & guidance.
  4. first ride of 2010....really loved hearing:12101: the chirpping sound...it's been a long 5 months...but it was a sweet sound
  5. Has anyone installed speedbleeders in place of the OEM bleeders? Website below. If so have they worked well or are they not worth the money? I plan on changing the brake fluid and clutch fluid over the next few months and it looks like these things would make it very easy for this time and in the future. JR http://www.speedbleeder.com/
  6. The kind old gentleman I bought the camp from I have know all my life. He only has distant family remaining whom I have never meet.I'm two years into our three year land contract his lawyer made. In twelve months the contract comes to term and I must pay the remaining balance in full. It has been a rough couple of years in the market and my plans for building a house down there have been set back. He told me verbally no problem you can just continue to pay me monthly if needed but that wasn't put in writing. Sad to say Friday he died unexpectedly from a short illness.I put a call into his lawyer to see where I stand. AT the moment I don't even know who to write the next check to.One things for sure. I must pay in full in twelve months. Hard to get a loan on land with no house on it just an old camp with no plumping etc.
  7. Believe it or not, we have more snow in the forecast for tonite and tomorrow. not as much as we got on Sat. but still, 3rd snow storm within a months time, someone explain how global warming is affecting this...................

  10. She would give me this tour as a birthday gift: http://www.edelweissbike.com/4DACTION/web_Send?webNavigation=0502010101&webRecordNumber=1002202&webNumber=4275&webLanguage=E&webDetailPage=02 40,000 miles, 6 continents, 8 months. It's only $157k for the two of us! She wouldn't have to get me a Christmas present!
  11. in Hanover, MD. At least it will be home for the next 60 to 90 days or so. Didn't bring the bike as it seems I'll be here thru most of the winter months, but you guys in this area please include me in what ever is going on. I can always "cage it:95:."
  12. I'm relatively new to the site and immediately felt a sense of "family" here. Although I tend to "josh" a lot and poke fun, there is a serious side and I'm dealing with that tonight. My lovely mother-in-law's funeral will be tomorrow. She passed last Friday from COPD, an insidious nasty consuming fate of which I hope never to have to be witness to again. Michelle, my wife, a firstborn and I were with Mae every day for the past 17 months. We did all we could to make her comfortable although we knew the inevitable. Please pray for us tomorrow as Michelle not only celebrates her own birthday but lifts her mom up. Thank you all,,, Renne

Given the choice, which is the better tire EMO the brigstone or dunlop 404. Have only got 10500 miles and need new rear tire after 12 months. Open to all suggestions Thanks!
  14. A major rock slide has happened on I-40 E, just 3 miles from TN into NC. The road is expected to be CLOSED for up to 3 months. Boomer....who sure would not want to ride into that mess.
  15. I was wondering about MiFi and how many folks here can get up to the 5-gig limit per month? I am thinking of getting a couple of small Dell 10's Mini's and having MiFi instead of having cards put into each unit. that way there is only one fee. and up to 5 Units can access it. I would also purchase one with-out a contract so I could turn it on and off for the months not really using it as well. Kinda of a nifty little device. Any comments about this kind of set-up would be great! Thanks, Jeff
  16. Although this is my first post here, I have been able to find all the answers to my questions/problems over the last few months. However, I have a doozy. A couple of months ago I ended up pulling the engine out of my '89 VR because it had a bad head gasket. Eventually, I got everything back together and the engine back in the bike. Last week when I went to start it, something just didn't seem right. I thought I had air leaks around the manifolds. The o-rings were new but I pulled the manifolds off and put gasket sealer on them anyway. I still couldn't get any readings on the front carbs to synch them. It has spark and fuel, but very little, if any, dancing of the carb sliders. As it turns out, I have high pressure air coming out of both of the vacuum ports on the front head. My question is, are my front cams 180 out? I was careful with the timing marks when putting the cams back in. Or could it be something else? I certainly appreciate any advice given here. Steve
  17. If you're like most avid riders, you put a lot of miles / kilometers on your bike, and the RSV is quite the nice bike for all those miles under the wheels.. But how much are you actually riding? I bought my bike with 20,000 miles on it last July and just turned 52,000 miles in Sept.. That's 32,000 miles in 14 months? The circumference of the earth at the equator is 24,902 mi / 40,076 km How far did you get on your bike? Food for thought eh?
  18. This is a two-minute video of a soldier being greeted by his dogs after returning home after 14 months in Iraq. Have tissues handy. http://blogs.chicagotribune.com/news_columnists_ezorn/2008/10/via-rich-miller.html#
  19. Up until yesterday afternoon, I was the Operations Manager for a small high-tech auto parts manufacturer. We had certainly seen some tough times over the last 18 months, but I used the slower pace to coach/teach all the employees/supervisors/managers to function more as a team and be fairly self reliant. I had been told I was to assume a higher role in January, and wanted the Operations side of the business to look after itself while I focused on getting our Engineering & Sales back on track. Well, apparently, the budget we had submitted to the parent corporation was unacceptable to them and they demanded more cuts. Since Operations was running smooth and the team could handle almost anything on their own, guess who was now redundant... Anyways, my direct boss seemed quite legitimately upset by it... moreso than I was really. I certainly got a decent package (compared to the current environment), so I am ok for a few months. But geez, you do exactly the right things, and look where it gets you...
  20. wow.....i was in shock...get this letter from missouri DOC.open it and start reading that his first parole hearing is already scheduled......Im thinking "how screwed up can the justice system be to be doing this already" Im about to totally flip out........I finally got to the date and had to reread it 3 times to make sure i was seeing correctly... Scheduled for sometime in oct of 2021......!! this means he will not do less than 13 yrs if you count the year he did while waiting for trial etc. Ok so now im liking this!!!...... my worst fears were that he would serve 6 or 8 out of the 18 he got. The DA's office gave us some stats several months ago on what percent they usually serve.......so this is definately good news. hmmm guess i better get started on my speach for the hearing so he stays put longer......:rotf: Just wanted to share this tidbit with you all since youve been here thru all this with us..
  21. Hello. I have been reading the threads for awhile now and registered today. I am an owner of a 2006 Ultra, love the bike. I will say no more on that. I was considering a new one but a number of reasons have me considering other choices like keeping the Ultra and getting a second bike. I am aware of the insurance etc on two bikes. Not looking for any info other than directly related to the RSV. I have not had a big interest in the RSV but find it is growing on me. The bike is very well liked by the owners. In addition to that I feel like the RSV is a bargain to be had as all I have been looking at are months on the floor and dusty. A near by dealership had a new Voyager for months and 4 Wings and an RSV. All for many months. I went in the other day and two Wings and the Voyager were gone. The RSV still sits there and I have never even seen any one looking at it. It is the sand color and another near by shop has the red. I believe one is the S model. Combine all that with a 5 yr warranty and my interest is sparked more. I had had Yamaha 550 and a 750 in the 70's. Great quality then and now. I would like input pro and con on the 2009 RSV. I realize the bike has changed little and this will be a biased group of owners. I have seen a few complain about heat, huh, can not be as bad as a Harley. I hae seen many complaints on the whine. Any thing else? Thank you very much for the time and objective discussion in advance.
  22. Well Friends, After telling my wife what a great time I had at Vogel, she wanted to go to Asheville, NC. I guess I dont have to tell you how great it was riding around the Estate. I've put over 3K miles on the Midnight in the last 2 months. We're hooked !!! I really cant wait till my wife gets to meet all the nice people on this site.

    A bittersweet day

Well, our youngest, who is our 24 yr old daughter got engaged today! She is one who plans everything so she says she needs a two year engagement to get everything ready. Who are we to argue. The sad part of the day is that my father-in-law was disgnosed with stage 4 Melanoma last fall and was only given months to live back then. We are surprised that he is doing as well as he is but the sad reality is that he will not be around to see his granddaughter's wedding. Sometimes life just isn't fair.
  24. Well its been one month since the hip replacement. Went to doc today and Im now full weight bearing on the leg:banana: Have been discharged from in home therpy and will now go to out patient rehab to build up more strength. Doc says everything looks excellent and dont have to go back for 2 months Still no word on when I can ride bike that will be up to theripist when they think IM ready. John
  25. Well, yesterday I got called into the conference room and, after seven and a half years (and being the third longest employee), was told my position no longer existed. I had survived a pay cut of 33% a couple months ago and now I'm unemployed Guess the Venture may be the first casualty if nothing comes up quickly.
