1. I have a 1986 venture, my brother just bought a 1996 royal star, my venture is so much smother than the royal star i cant beleave it, could the carbs being out of sink cause it to vibrate more, the motor vibrates trough the floor boards, only has 29,000 miles on it, it just dont feal right, i would not think there would be that much deference between the two, wont be abel to sink his carbs for couple of weeks untill i get up to his house, he is about 120 miles away from me, just wondered if any one has any toughts on this.
2. ... on Thurs 10/21/10, SW of Loveland, CO, heading west from the intersection of CO Rd 21 & 19, gold on cream, ca 1983! Great looking scoot. Friday, 10/22/10, RAY'S MOTORCYCLE SHOP (my wrench) ... 1984 VR Two Tone Wine, 34,000 miles, lots of work being done from sitting, and from Wyoming. If you guys catch up with this give me a PM back and let's do a ride together! JackZ Jack Tharp Ft Collins, Co
3. After today's ride in to work at 38°F I am thinking that my bike does not like the cold air temps. It started up just fine and I let it warm up while I got dressed to ride, about 5 minutes, then I reduced the choke to ~1200RPM just like normal and off I went. once at crusing speed of 35mph the bike was backfiring slightly out the exhaust, at like one pop per second. I tried adjusting the choke more and less but the popping persisted till I had gone about 1.5 miles and it was warmed up a little then not so much as another hiccup the whole time. Yes I do use SeaFoam in every other tank of gas. The temp gauge never moved in the first 5 miles, and for the whole 1 hour trip in to work it never made it up to where it normally runs which is about 50% deflection. It was at about 25% for the whole trip. I wonder if it ever got warm enough to open the thermostat or if the engine was just air cooling the whole time. Now as far as me staying warm, that is a whole nutter story. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=54034
4. could anyone tell me what the voltage should be at the battery is when bike is running. 08 RSTD I would think it is the same as a venture. 1000 miles on bike stopped to get gas 30 miles from home headed out of town went to start bike and all I got was click click. So there I was got a push start it fired up I took off down the road stop 40 mile later and it started right up. and did all day long. Took bike to dealer when I got back to town and they said it was a loose negative cable. I find that hard to believe when it seemed to charge back up. they did say it only had 33% charge on it but battery did check out OK.
5. I was coming home from work tonight on the freeway, when all of a sudden it was like I put my foot on the brakes. I started to slow even with more throttle. I got off the exit and stopped at a light. Pulled over and looked all the way around the bike in the semi-darkness of a gas station. It had smoke coming from underneath but no oil or anything. definite burning rubber smell but I couldn't see anything stuck somewhere. started it back up and it revved fine. pulled out and it ran just like normal. when I got home I shined a flashlight all the way around and can't find anything. 86 Venture with 28,000 miles. I replaced the brakes and tires about 1500 miles ago. Rear end was lubed about 5,000 miles ago and the oil changed last month. I wonder about a dragging rear brake, but the peddle felt fine and I pushed down hard on both front and rears before stopping. Anyone ever have this problem? I worried I might be melting a clutch but I would think that it wouldn't go away like that
6. I left last week for a 2 week ride but had to cut it short due to an injury. I left Tenn today and drove 8 hours all the way on interstate. I made the turn off the interstate to the road that was four miles away to my home. I went to downshift to slow down at the ramp and couldn't find the shift lever. I looked over the side and it was hanging over on its side. I pulled over and sure enough the bolt had come out and was gone. I was only a few miles from a Yamaha dealership so I was able to hold it on with my boot and shift as needed to this shop where it was easily fixed. Moral of the story. Check this bolt. Something I've never bothered to look at.
7. Hi All, Been poking around the site and am thinking about jumping in. I wasn't looking for a new bike but while getting my '04 Concours inspected at the local Yamaha dealer saw a leftover ('08) RSTD. Man what a great looking bike! Here's the dilema - I wasn't looking to add another bike to the garage until my Connie hit a 100k miles (next Spring) BUT... they don't make these anymore and I would hate to pass up the opportunity to buy a new one. I've checked with over 10 dealers and there are a total of 3 (new) local bikes available, 2 '08 and 1 '09. So... If you've got a couple of minutes, a few questions I have are, Any regrets from those of you that have had one awhile? I do ALL my own work on the Connie, oil changes - tires - valve adjustments - etc.. and she's pretty heavily farkled, is the RSTD owner friendly as far as maintenance goes? Connie's valves are spec for adj at 6k miles but I go 10 - 12k and find only 1 or 2 slightly out - what's the interval if any on the RSTD - the stealer said 12k then asked the mechanic and was told 22k??? I guess the last question (for now) is $$$ The dealer is asking $13k for a 2 year old leftover - a bit high (I think) as the invoice was about $12,3xx when it was new on the floor back then. I figure I'd offer a lowball # and hope for the best. What do y'all think would be a fair price based on your purchases? Hope to hear from ya's and maybe meet some of you on the road. Thanks for any help and/or info you can provide. Sean B. COG # 5993 IBA # 17160
8. Just for the record, a friend I work with had the belts come apart in his Venom over the week. He had just put the tire on his 1800 Goldwing a couple months ago before taking a trip up along the coast. The rear tire only had 4,000 miles. Avon told him that his tire was after the bad batch with the cracking problem. Don't know, but glad I got Dunlops.....
9. I joined this forum in late 2008, back then my interest only was reading maintenance tips, fixes and the like, then I started to read the watering hole and got hooked up. I have owned my '86 Venture Royale for 21 years; 6K miles when I got it, it has now 42K miles. My other ride is a '93 Suzuki GSX1100G (dirty fast) Ok, the reason I'm writing this posting is to express my profound appreciation to all contributing members for their write-ups, know-how, instructions, etc. I just finished installing new larger battery cables, I got them from Barend, made installation thanks to Squidley's step by step instructions, by-pass the battery light sensor from GeorgeS's write-up; new Oddysey battery from Condor's write-up; Freebird game me the link to buy some other things a few months back. and from other members I also installed new ISO Kuryakyn grips, two new speakers and starter/solenoid. Avon/Venom rear tire (installed by a bike shop) Lastly, jut to mention that March of last year I met V7Goose and his brother Tom while they were here in El Paso, TX I have seen a lot of pics of your rides, places you have been, etc, I know the rule: got to post some pics! Here they are and thank you. Rudy:thumbsup2:
10. I picked up my buddies loaner 2007 Midnight Venture tonight that he is letting me use while I tear my bike down and go through it for it's annual. I got a long list of things i need to do to my 87 VR. But the 2007 is a nice ride and I am greatful he is willing to let me use his since he doesn't seem to ride it much. It has 1125 miles on it since he bought it new and I know I've put at least 300 of those miles on it just to keep fresh gas in it. What a waste to have a great ride and leave it in the carport collecting cobwebs.
11. My 86 burned a valve and runs like crap. I can get 92 for $2500 with 80K miles on it, plus I have LOTS of great parts from the 86. OR, I can get a fully optioned 2001 BMW K1200LT with 39k miles and new service and tires for $7500. What do you think? Keep in mind I don't have as much time to work on them like I used to. I like the Venture looks and power. I like the BMW fuel injection and adjustable windshield. Moma like the BMW heated seats, but the lower price of the Venture. If I look at it in a 5 year term, the BMW seems the correct choice.
12. Hey Gang! My 1987 Venture Royale is running better than ever! I think I finally got the carb overflow leak problem resolved. The bike is strong and smooth and I can honestly say for the first time I can begin to understand why these bikes are so beloved. Anyway, I wanted the groups' input on something I'm noticing. First, a little background. My 1987 Venture was purchased this spring with only 7700 miles. Carbs were rebuilt and it's had is share of Sea Foam run through it in the last 5 months. I've put about 2000 miles on it so far. The power is good and the mileage is between 38-40 and that's with myself and wife totaling about 380 lbs. (My wife is small, Ha!) Anyway, I'm noticing a little black soot coming out of the exhaust when I first start it. My first thought was perhaps I was burning a little oil but I've been watching the oil level and it doesn't appear to be moving at all. Could this soot just be a 23 years of muck purging itself? Should I continue to use periodic Sea Foam or am I seeing a new potential problem. As always, your thoughts are appreciated! Bill
13. Tomorrow is Linda's birthday and our son that lives in Newark Ohio invited us down for lunch and an air show. All of us were running a tad late to get to the opening ceremony but as we were coming out of Bob Evans Linda looked up and couldn't even speak. There was a Stealth bomber flying at a serious low altitude heading to the airport for the flag raising fly-over. What an AWSOME site !! None of us had ever seen a Stealth except on television, still can't get over it. I gotta say tho, it must have been a defective one because they are supposed to be invisible and we all seen it. It made it's fly over ( we were only 3 miles from the airport) and we could see it turn almost tip toward ground, another awesome site. Because of the total traffic jam, it took a while to get into the airport but the wait was well worth it. There was more plane activity than I can explain and the best part was were were only 100 feet from the landing strip. GREAT DAY !! This show was in http://www.coshoctoncounty.net/agency/airport/
14. Made it to Oklahoma City today, left Tunica Miss. at 5 this am and rode about 500 miles. Will try to make it to Sante Fe, New Mexico Tomorrow. Too dang hot to ride much more than we did today. Hope to be in Jackson Hole on Tuesday and then spend a few days in Yellowstone before heading for the Black Hills. Have had good luck so far, had to replace the new Venom tire that had less than 2500 miles on it but I noticed it was low about 10 minutes before we were to leave home so I guess that was still good luck, better than being on the road and having it go down. Now I have a new Dunlop 404 on the rear, at least until I get back home.
15. I have heard from the triwing trikers about their gas mileage. My 07 hannigan trike is gettig around 30 miles to the gallon riding 60 mph. Some say I should be getting better.I had the carbs syn at a dealer about two months ago.The bike has just got 1400 miles on it.I want to know what you guys think.
16. Made it 700 miles from Marietta GA to Ft. Lauderdale no problem. But when I pulled off the exit yesterday after the last 120 miles, my clutch was about gone. Very loose play in the clutch, and obviously very difficult to shift. Had to limp it in the last 8 miles in 2nd gear. I let it cool down and checked the reservoir and it was full, and checked it again this morning, and it seems to be back up to the normal pressure on the clutch handle. But still seems more difficult to shift. Any ideas as to what might be causing this to happen? We leave on a cruise today and return Saturday, and then leave for the 700 mile return trip to GA. I'm hoping someone may have some experience with this particular situation and can recommend a quick fix for me to get it home (other than the obvious rental car and trailer route!) Thanks.
17. Just bought this yesterday. Put 130 miles to get it home. 2006 Honda VTX 1800R. 6700 miles new tires and lockable bags. Still have the 1st gen. Will be doing some maintance on her.
18. I stopped in at Iowa City Motorsports to buy gloves, glasses etc and sitting out front was this 1985 in really good condition with low miles. I wouldn't promote a dealers bikes but these older bikes seem to be getting scarcer all the time. Here's their web page if you want to take a look. Sales guy showed me a blond 83 in back that has even fewer miles and in even better condition but they haven't put up on the site yet. http://www.iowacitymotorsports.com/pre_owned_detail.asp?sid=02512628X9K8K2010J9I33I44JPMQ841R0&veh=1799554 Iowa Guy
19. Will camshafts out of an 83 fit in a 99? Are 83 camshafts the same as Vmax? Now that Ive rolled 100,000 miles on my 99, I'd like to add a little pick me up to it.
20. Brenda's son went to helen Ga, and like it there, so we had to go too. first let me say that Labor Day weekend is not the time to do this as we ran in to bumper to bumper stop and go traffic for the last couple of miles and wall to wall people. Anywhichway, it was a great day with great temperatures and beautiful roads to ride on. We left around 1130 and got back at about 6 with a very tasty bratwurst sandwich at "pies and pints" for lunch. Even saw another MkI (brown) on the other side of the street a bit further down along with about 8-10 other bikes at another establishment (proly drinking lemonade:rotfl:). Earl, you said to think of you if we went out riding and I did just that quite a few times, wish you could have been there in person. Get well soon and maybe we'll get to ride together for real one day. God bless! this is the route we wound up taking, 185 miles and 5 hrs. plus stops. http://rideplanner.harley-davidson.com/rideplanner/ridePlanner.jsp?locale=en_US&bmLocale=en_US
21. wife and i took a ride Saturday from Randleman NC to Lynchburg Va. - what has made longer distance rides more pleasurable is the Hoppe Fairing, Utopia backrest, gel pad (walmart), Butler seat mods, tour pack w/ dual padded backrest and highway pegs. i used to get only about 50 miles before my butt was unhappy but can get 100 miles before discomfort begins. i love the cruise and use it constantly. hopefully my next addition to our riding experience will be a communication set for wife and i - it would be nice to chat while riding thru the country. my 07 RSTD rocks, i've had it over two years and put approx. 18K on it, mostly two up. if i had to do it over i would have purcahse the venture but i am happy with my ride !! just wanted to share some happiness. buz
22. As a followup to at least one other thread, I thought I'd stir the pot a bit because I just don't see the point of "over maintenance". Specifications for the RSV say... change oil @ 8,000 miles (13,000 kilometers) and change final drive oil @ 16,000 miles (25,000 kilometers). So, that means every second oil change, change the final drive oil. Some folks here feel it necessary to change their oil sooner... 3,000 miles, 5,000 miles ... overkill in my book ... "old school mentality". Some folks here also feel that, since they are changing their oil, why not change the final drive oil as well. To me, that is a waste of time and money. At least one person stated that, when they changed their final drive fluid (at the same time as changing their oil), it was BLACK and smelled BURNT. Now, assuming their changing their oil at the 8,000 mile mark (or sooner), then to you I say "you have a problem with your final drive" because under normal circumstances (and even at 16,000 miles intervals) it should NOT be black and smell burnt. I last changed my final drive oil at 18,852 kilometers. (Yes it was done at the 1,000 km service). I changed it again today at 28,076 kilometers (a difference of 9224 km or 5,730 miles) and well before the recommended interval of 16,000 miles. Here is a picture of what it looks like. As you can see, the old oil is definately not black and I can tell you that is certainly does not smell burnt. In fact, it looks perfectly normal to me. My point(s) here being... If you are changing your final drive oil at every oil change and that is at 8,000 miles or less, then you're wasting your time and money. Do you have your differential oil in your car/truck changed at every oil change??? (I think not) Then why not I ask...if you do it on your bike... why be different with your cage? If you're changing your final drive oil at every oil change and that is at 8,000 miles or less, and it is coming out smelling BURNT and is BLACK then something is WRONG and you need to find out what that is. Everyone is entitled to doing their "own thing" and I'm not discrediting anyone for that but quite frankly, I really don't see your reasoning for changing oil at 1/2 (or less than) the recommended intervals. Having said all of the above, I hereby admit to changing not only my bikes engine oil & filter but also my final drive oil at considerably less intervals than what is recommended. (WTF..???) :witch_brew:

24. I purchased this tach a year ago without any problems to date. Yesterday while leaving Salisbury NC and heady about eighty miles to my house it quit near Gastonia NC. When I got home I shut of the bike and turned the key back on and the tack did not cycle like it should but the needle droped lower than 0. Today I put the key in and it went up to 8,000 and back to 0 like it should, so I started it and went for a little test run. After two miles it went back to 0. I stopped and fueled up and it is working fine again and has not acted up. I originally thoght something is loose but before I tear into it I was hoping someone else has some input. The tach may be bad also.
25. Just curious how many miles you guyz are getting on a set of rear brake pads. I just pulled mine @ 27,660 kilometes (17,187 miles). These are the OEM "original" pads (first time change). I swapped them side-to-side about 8,000 km ago and now the outer is almost to the metal and the inner ain't got much more than that. I do use my front brake a fair amount and they still have lots of wear left.
