  1. For all you West Virginia members and riders I just finished an 800 mile, 3 day tour of the Marlington/Snow Shoe Mountain area. We followed the designated routes that are laid out and that is some beautiful country. There were six of us in all including a HD, GW, GW trike, BMW, Kawasaki, and my RSV. All bikes were flawless in the total 2000 mile trip. Met some nice folks, ate some good food in small town restaurants (no fast food) and enjoyed the temps in the 70's/low 80's in the mountains. I recommend the area to ride. Pictures may be coming. Hats off to West Virginia for making motorcycling touring inviting.
  2. Hi, Has anyone taken a 1st Gen VR up the Dalton Highway in the last couple of years or so? Mine is itching to do it, thinking of next summer. It would be about a 4900 mile round trip.
  3. Well yesterday was Easter Sunday. That meant spending the day at the in-laws overeating, watching a game and listening to the kids play/argue/fight whatever. The entire time I am looking at the thermometer reading 64 degrees, with nice sunshine, and a slight breeze with my scoot in the garage at home without even putting a mile on it. Did not even get a chance to even look at her. What a bum way to spend a beautiful spring day. Shaun
  4. before you start cutting back on your fun riding? We are now at about $3.55 a gallon around here and it takes me about $15 bucks or so to fill up when the bike has about a gallon left. At my last fillup, my average was right at 45mpg and I figure that works out to about eight cents a mile. That would still be about $40 for a 500 mile weekend. RandyA
  5. Venture owner. While my 08 RSV was in the shop getting the ignition switch replaced, I traded it on a 2007 HD Electra Glide Ultra Classic. My Uncle, who is a huge HD fan, talked me into going by the local HD dealership and ride one. So I did. And I was hooked. I wasn't even thinking about a HD. A GW, yes, but a HD, no. But I'm glad I did. The handling was superb, the ergonomics are great and it feels like a very well built machine. Fuel injection is great. Switch on and press the start button. And guess what, it has a CD player. My RSV had 1 mile on the odometer when I bought it and had nearly 40,000 when I traded. I enjoyed every mile I put on it and plan on doing the same with this HD. I don't plan on abandoning this web site though. I enjoy the forum, met too many good people and plan on making some more "meet and eats". Glenn
  6. Well the time has come and I am going to give up being a OTR owner operator. I will be leaving Thur. to take my lease truck back to Mn. and turn it in. I landed a dedicated run here 1 mile from the house home every night and no weekends. It will end up about 11 hours a day and $975.00 a week I think it was a good deal so I jumped on it. LESS STRESS. :dancefool:
  7. Under $40, so i figured they are worth a try. Installed this afternoon... 500 mile ride on the slab tomorrow, so review to follow. http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj302/ThomWill/IMAG0258.jpg http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj302/ThomWill/IMAG0257.jpg
  8. Was reading posts about meet and eats and it struck me that Sleeperhawks Feb 26,2011 11:00 am meet at QuakerState would fit in nicely with my run to watch the "Last Scheduled" launch of the space shuttle Endeavour on 2/27/2011 3:35 PM. it's just 522 miles away from Greenville, SC. So if one traveled at least 6 hrs (300 mile) after the M&E Saturday, they would be within a 4 hour (200 mile) ride to the launch site. Anyone else interested?
  9. Anyone know if they went out of business? Can't find them anymore.
  10. I recently had a post about seat beads and somebody suggested trying a gel pad from wal mart instead. I tried the beads and hate them, so I bought the 20 dollar pad. I just got back from sturgis. It is roughly a 350 mile trip one way for me. Since this is the first time I have traveled a good distance with it I was skeptical how long I would be comfy. Well I'll say this, my bike is no longer a 350-400 mile per day bike. I could easily double that now if i wanted. I could sit in the seat all day. So if anybody is having seat trouble (all you rstd'ers like me) give it a try, you might be surprised. 2 of my friends bought them too. 1 rides a vtx, and the other a wing. They guy on the vtx couldnt believe how much they help. The wing rider was comfy anyway, but even he noticed a difference.

    600 Mile service

On the 600 mile service how important do you think to have the dealer do it, or do it yourself, looks like going over bolts and nut and oil change and that is a breeze unless your old like me...Then becomes a challenge.. Also manual does not call for rear drive fluid to be change at 600 I think it better to drop it your thoughts.. Reason I'm asking this I might makea M&E that will put me over if I don't get to it before I leave, i'll be over no more than 200 miles.. I'm a real funny about doing it on time...
  12. My neighbor and I took a 300 mile ride today and purposely stopped at this memorial rock. The kid paints this rock every year in memory of our Vets. One portion of the rock does not get repainted as it actually has ashes from some veterans in the paint. If you ever travel across I-80 in Iowa - turn south on highway 25 west of Des Moines - and the rock is about a mile south of the interstate on the east side of the road.
  13. Might not interest some but here goes. The night I met my 83 VR, June 13 2007 11:33 PM. Let me set the stage. Bought off Ebay sight unseen. The wife and I had been looking for months, I knew what I wanted and the wife was my purchasing agent. She found this one in Dothan, Alabama. It had a very low buy it now price and we went for it. In talking with the seller he said he could believe it, only on ebay for 30 minutes. Now I live in Upper East Tennessee so had to get it home, lucked out on a shipper headed this way from Mobil, Alabama and got a great price for transport. The day of arrival came and it was raining elephants and bears. (cats and dogs were nothing) The shipper called at 9:00 AM and ask if I could take a late delivery, what me turn it down NO WAY. So after having not ridden a motorcycle in 27 years the moment of truth was fast approaching. Move the hands of the clock forward and it's 11:30 PM, still raining like Noah is next door and the bike is here, almost. Closest place the shipper can get his rig to my house is 2 miles away. (Did I mention it was raining) So we unload at a closed service station under the canopy. Bike runs really well (thank goodness). I little tryout under the canopy and it's to to "carry it on home". (did I mention the rain?). The plan was for the wife to follow me home keeping any traffic off my rear end. First Bump and all the light go out, first downhill run (mountains here you know) no rear brakes and very little front. Thank Goodness only a mile and 3/4 to go. (don't forget the rain) Found out real quick if you roll on the throttle it would move. Well the next mile was a long mile. Zero visibilty, don't forget the rain, and my rearend in pucker mode. The lights of home come in to view, at least I think its home hard to tell in the rain. At last my prize is home in it's nice DRY basement. The wife looks at me and says "you look like a drowned moose" I really didn't want to tell her it wasn't from the rain but from the "sweat bullets". Over the next few weeks, reading on Venturerider.org, I said it's time to call for help. RandyA I saw lived the next town over so I called and introduced myself, what a blessing he arrived like a night in shinning armour on a purple steed and in one day, a little work and some duct tape the old gal rose from the ashes. So thanks Randy, and more than a few of the rest of you my 83 VR is running well and is now known as "Tent Peg". (another long post) Yes, I know what a great choice this bike was and like it more each time we leave home together. So take a look below - Steve & "Tent Peg" the early days!
  14. I posted about this earlier. When I got back from maintenance day last year my battery went dead. I have replaced the battery twice since then but it would go dead unless I kept it on the battery tender. I took my bike to the dealer for the 48,000 mile service and asked them to find my problem. The dealer just called, my bike is ready. The rectifier was bad. I hope this is covered under warranty. I will find out tomorrow.
  15. Me & and couple of friends rode up to the Blue Ridge Parkway yesterday (4/3/10). Got on at Hwy 276 just below the Pisgah Inn, below Asheville. Went there for lunch (always good). Found out that there are 5 major closures in NC. We just happened on a 4 mile stretch that was open!. I looked at the BR closures site and they don't say much but they do give a # to call for updates (828) 298 0398. If you are going to ride the Parkway in NC,,,,, might call. Closure site: http://www.nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/roadclosures.htm But, up to about 20 miles south of Asheville and for 70 miles north you will hit a series of closures (rock slides, broken road and ICE in the tunnels). Mt Mitchell is open but only by limited access. Folk Art center above Ashville is open but you can't get to Mt.Mitchell without leaving the Parkway. Approximate mile marker closures south to north: 422 to 414, 409 to 400, 375 to 352, 341 to 330 318 to 305. But they will be more exact, with highway #'s if you call. YES, snow in pockets on the sides of the road, cool. So, we still made a great ride by jumping back on 276 to Waynesville, west, to Maggie Valley and got back on the Parkway above Cherokee. From Cherokee, east, to Hwy 215 (Devils Courtyard) is open and fine. That is a 50+ mile section with the best vista views. So we got a great 500 mile ride in yesterday. Oh, but do watch for broken up pavement on roads that get you to the parkway. Found several bad spots (no warnings) on the way down on Hwy 215. Hey, but it did get us above the pollen level!!! 16. Last Sunday March 7th was great day for a 230 mile ride! Here is the photos http://www.photoshow.com/watch/Pw5nw3zq
  17. Amazon.com has a sale through midway on a case of 6 cans for $39.00. Add $8 for shipping still comes to only $8.00 a can to your door. Anybody found a better deal? It's a 50 mile drive to nowhere out here so I might bite on it.
  18. Sorry to rub it in for those of you buried under snow! Well, no I'm not! I lived in the Buffalo NY are(Lackawanna) until I moved to Vegas 23 yrs ago. I'm the ride captain for the American Legion Post 8 ALR. We had 23 bikes for a 200 mile run today. Went to Mesquite for lunch, then back along Lake Meade to Vegas. Temp was in the mid 60's sun shinning. My RSV in the lead of 20 Harleys. The way it should be!!
  19. Went for a 10 mile ride today. Was nice to get out and do a little, not much but some riding. Found out I need some fork oil. Or get some progressive springs when i can afford it. Hope everyone else got out for a few miles.
  20. I am due for the 26,600 mile (42,000 Km) service. The maintenance manual says that at 26.6K, a valve clearance check and adjustment needs to be performed. I called my dealer and was estimated 3.5 hours of labor and $400. From his description of what should be done, it seems that they'll perform a 4,000 mile service. "It is a very thorough service", he said. Does this seem reasonable? Dave
  21. Brought home the 08 RSV three weeks ago and haven't been able to ride due to snow. Today it got up to 35 and the roads were dry so I went for an 80 mile ride. Man I needed that, I was going nuts just looking at it sitting in the garage. Digger
  22. Trying to calculate the engine rpm of a bike at a given speed. Constants I know are, primary drive ratio(2.184), 5th gear ratio(.857od), final drive ratio(17/39=2.294), tire diameter(25.5=790 revs per mile). So, would it be as simple as 2.184x.857= 1.8716x2.294=4.293x 790(tire rev at 60 mph)=3391rpms?
  23. Went for a 500 mile ride today. While passing through Lampasas, Texas I saw two nice Ventures. While sitting at a light, a very nice 2008 crossed the intersection. It had a PGR banner on the windshield. About a quarter mile past there, a very clean, very shiny Midnight RSV, towing a trailer and riding 2up passed the other direction. Wish I had time to chase them down but I was on a schedule... Nice to see 3 ventures in a small town!
  24. I got in one little 200 mile ride then this started. ('/slideshow/weather/20925552/detail.html','width=1024,height=820,top=0,left=0,scrollbars');
