  1. We've had so many nuts this year there have been days where it seems it was raining nuts, gonna have to use a shovel to clean up around the house, don't recall ever having so many especially with the drought we've been having, been a while since any rain. Have to watch out for falling nuts when out riding on windy days. Now the mountains have snow, US441 closed thru the smokies due to snow, early for snow, heck last year not many days all winter below freezing. Crazy weather. And now all this wind has blown over a pretty large oak tree thats been dead a while in the woods out back, guess I'll be out cleaning up the mess, when the nuts stop falling cause the little suckers hurt when they hit you in the head. Heres a link to some pic of snow on Mt. Leconte up in the Smokies. http://www.highonleconte.com/daily-posts.html
  2. We are in Orlando with my daughter her hubby and two kids, yesterday we did Universal Islands of Adventure and today we are going to Wet N Wild, went there with daughter and her brother when they were kids, but this place is 10 times bigger now than it was in 1983. I didnt care too much for all the waiting at Universal, raining on and off, but we did leave before the monsoon hit. Looking forward to the water slides. Rain is forecast for every day, and so far it has..........and I did get my cycle therapy at Universal.
  3. When riding in the rain, it seems that on the 1st Gen, it was mostly the crotch of the jeans that got soaked. On a second gen without the wind blockers, the knee is the wettest. The Army has a saying, "If it ain't raining, then it ain't training." If we accept that and it's corollary as being true, then this four day bike ride has been an intense field training exercise. The Army has a neat system that allows you to track friendly vehicles in your area. The GPS on a motorcycle works the same way. That icon represents the friendly unit. Everybody else is out to get you. When it is raining and you stop at a hotel for the night, junk from the vending machine is almost as good as a fine meal you would have to ride to.
  4. How are you spending your Fourth of July? It is raining here this morning. This is the FOURTH day of the Newport Motorcycle Rally, so we hope it stops raining so we can go again today. There are fireworks tonight. Whatever you do, have fun and be safe! Yama Mama
  5. Why is it when I work during the week it is Sunny, little wind and 75* to 95*. But come to a day I get off or the weekend and it's 56* and raining????? Lousy rotten weather!! Bryan

  7. Snow 75% Gone , No ice fishing , no snowmobiling, etc Wanted to take the FJR for a ride But it was raining to hard
  8. So here's I am waiting for Brian 'golf&venture' from Seattle to show up and go over his new2him bike before he heads back to the barn. He's been chomping at the bit to get it back home ever since he bougth it 2 months ago. He bought it from a party up in L.Tahoe, and it's been sitting at his daughters in Vacaville between here and SanFrancisco. So what's Mama Weather thinking about doing? Raining. The one weekend that looks like we'll get the first rain of the season. It's gonna be interesting changing out the plugs and syncing the carbs. Hope this stuff misses us..... http://www.cast-aways.com/images/unlucky.jpg
  9. But I've gotta go pick my bike up from a buddy's house two hours away today. It's 44 degrees and raining, so I might be a popcicle by the time I get back!
  10. Might not interest some but here goes. The night I met my 83 VR, June 13 2007 11:33 PM. Let me set the stage. Bought off Ebay sight unseen. The wife and I had been looking for months, I knew what I wanted and the wife was my purchasing agent. She found this one in Dothan, Alabama. It had a very low buy it now price and we went for it. In talking with the seller he said he could believe it, only on ebay for 30 minutes. Now I live in Upper East Tennessee so had to get it home, lucked out on a shipper headed this way from Mobil, Alabama and got a great price for transport. The day of arrival came and it was raining elephants and bears. (cats and dogs were nothing) The shipper called at 9:00 AM and ask if I could take a late delivery, what me turn it down NO WAY. So after having not ridden a motorcycle in 27 years the moment of truth was fast approaching. Move the hands of the clock forward and it's 11:30 PM, still raining like Noah is next door and the bike is here, almost. Closest place the shipper can get his rig to my house is 2 miles away. (Did I mention it was raining) So we unload at a closed service station under the canopy. Bike runs really well (thank goodness). I little tryout under the canopy and it's to to "carry it on home". (did I mention the rain?). The plan was for the wife to follow me home keeping any traffic off my rear end. First Bump and all the light go out, first downhill run (mountains here you know) no rear brakes and very little front. Thank Goodness only a mile and 3/4 to go. (don't forget the rain) Found out real quick if you roll on the throttle it would move. Well the next mile was a long mile. Zero visibilty, don't forget the rain, and my rearend in pucker mode. The lights of home come in to view, at least I think its home hard to tell in the rain. At last my prize is home in it's nice DRY basement. The wife looks at me and says "you look like a drowned moose" I really didn't want to tell her it wasn't from the rain but from the "sweat bullets". Over the next few weeks, reading on Venturerider.org, I said it's time to call for help. RandyA I saw lived the next town over so I called and introduced myself, what a blessing he arrived like a night in shinning armour on a purple steed and in one day, a little work and some duct tape the old gal rose from the ashes. So thanks Randy, and more than a few of the rest of you my 83 VR is running well and is now known as "Tent Peg". (another long post) Yes, I know what a great choice this bike was and like it more each time we leave home together. So take a look below - Steve & "Tent Peg" the early days!
