1. i recently joined the PGR and was wondering what the normal dress attire is when you ride the event. when you receive an email notice of an upcoming event, do you just show up at the appointed place and time or do you notify someone? i've looked on the PGR site and didn't really find any answers. thanks to any & all who have input.
2. I overshot my 16k mile service on my 07 Venture by 4k. So, I took it in Tues. I got it back Wed, $800 poorer. I was disappointed to hear that the carbs were 'barely out of balance'. I had them save the old plugs so I could see them - they looked great! Hardly any wear at all, and the color looked right. I ended up keeping them as a spare, just in case a new one goes bad. I was hoping that the bike would run like a crotch rocket, since I haven't had it tuned in 10k - nope, she runs about the same. I could tell they had the fairing off and my handlebars had to be re-adjusted for me. Oh well, at least they said that she looks great and everything is in 'ship shape'. craigr
3. Today after work, I stopped by one of the local salvage yards to see if they had a window roll up for Laura's van. I was told that now they have a new yard with Cash for clunkers vehicles in it and they should have plenty. I went in and saw at least 200+ vehicles and to be honest, it looked like a pretty nice car lot. In fact, there were a lot of cars and trucks that I would be proud to own. There was an 02 Burgundy Escalade in very nice shape, a two door Seville with a Northstar engine, several Blazer SUV's that looked almost new and on and on and on. It was absolutely unbelievable that many of these vehicles were not worth more than $4,500 for a straight trade-in or private sell. They are now selling parts off them, but no engine parts. But, with "disabled" written across the windshield, the engines are worthless, since they have been seized up. I know several people that are in great need of a decent vehicle and it is truly a shame at what has happened to these vehicles. Yeah, there are some that are truly clunkers, but many were really nice. RandyA
4. My 06 RSV came with stock RK pipes. I would like to get a little more sound. How do you drill the baffles and how many holes do you drill? I looked at some of the old posts but didin't see specifically how it should be done or how many holes? Thanks
5. Okay, I did find the Flanders Bar installation on the Ventures web site. These instructions looked pretty good, but ?? No where in the instructions did it say what to do with nipple on the box housing the cruise control and throttle grip. Looked at the original handle bar and there was a hole for the nipple. So for those of you that swapped bars, did you drill a hole in the Flanders Bar or file off the nipple of the housing? I drilled the hole. Not done with the install, but will finish tomorrow.
6. Spotted a Midnight in Clio Michigan Yesterday. It was pulling a black and ??Red? trailer. Looked like they were on a long trek. Anyone from here?
7. I'm looking to install a trunk and cigarette lighter on my 2006 RSTD. What are my options? I've looked but haven't found much. Will a Venture trunk fit?
8. Although I've had my 99 for five years I've never ridden in the dark in the country until this weekend.I left Cocoa at 5 AM headed for Tampa and I was NOT impressed with the headlight. It looked like I had a kerosene lantern lighting the way.Any ideas on a bulb upgrade?
9. What wireing will in need to patch my intercom headset to the Zumo. I have looked at some units on line but i'm not sure whats what.
10. Saw an HD with one of these bags on his luggage rack. I liked it. It's waterproof and less expensive than a lot of bags we've looked at: http://www.roadreadybags.com/products/touringrackbags.html
11. The thread about a member (Charlie) buying a KLR650 got me thinking about riding the dirt roads. I live on the edge of the Chattahoochie National Forest, so besides having lots of twisty 2 lane roads around here, there are even more narrow dirt roads and trails thru the forest. Maybe the 90 degree heat got me thinking about how much cooler the woods are than the asphalt? I almost bought a KLR650 this past week too. But I held back while I looked around and have almost decided that I want something in the 200-250cc class. I don't need a machine capable of sustained highway speeds, the dirt roads start 2 miles from my driveway. The smallest displacement machine I looked at is the one I'm actually leaning towards, a Yamaha TW200. It has a low-low gearing and a big fat rear tire that shouldn't get stuck anywhere. On the down side it has a top speed of 65mph and only 16 horsepower. Does anyone here ride something like this also? Other options are the 225/230/250cc machines from Honda/Kawasaka/Yamaha. http://randyrick.us/motorcycles/TW200.jpg
12. I was riding with a friend of mine coming home from the fire academy today and we were traveling at a pretty good speed. The Fire Engine we were with left slightly ahead of us and we were trying to catch up. We finally caught up to it after traveling at about 85mph for a little while. After we got back into the firehouse he went inside and I stayid outside getting the truck back into service. while standing there, all of the sudden I heard a burst of air release. I looked over at the bikes and the front tire on his bike had BLOWN OUT. I looked at the tire and saw it was all dry rotted. We looked back and thought It could have been bad had it blown while doing 85. Just a little wake up call that you need to be sure you check your tires CLOSELY or you can wind up in the same situation or worse
13. Saw 4 1st gen ventures total other than mine. A awesome Mk II two tone gold Royale, a Burgundy Mk1 that was in great shape that I parked next to for a few hours. A black two tone Mk II royale that looked brand new! Wow that was a sweet looking bike. and a Burgundy Mk1 that.... well.... I've seen parts bikes that looked in better shape. but it ran! I see 2nd gens all over the place, but they disappear into the harleys so you have to look close, some very nice custom ones. and NO fjr1300's. I wanted to show my wife one and there is none to be seen. I'll post some photos later, Having too much fun.
14. Been an odd day here, went to SafeWay Grocery Store for some supplies this morning about 7:30 AM. Very few cars in parking lot. I step out of the car, and for some reason, looked down at ground. There, in front of my foot was a " Live 9MM Cartrige " Hmmmm?? says I, looked around, nothing going on, Picked it up before some kid gets hold of it. Ok, about 1 PM I get ready to go for a ride, -- in the driveway, helmet on, engine warming up, and the little birdie, ( in the back of my mind ) seems to be saying, " no no don't ride today " Hmmm ???, so I take the car, go to Lowes, they no got what I want . Home for about an hour, and Heavy rain storm pops up, extreme heavy rain for about 5 min. In the middle of it is One Huge Thunder clap, a 3 banger. Sounded like 3, 500 lb. bombs went off. Seattle gets very little thunder and lightning! I been here 24 years now, and only heard thunder about 5 or 6 times. But this was really loud, Reminded me of growing up in Minnesota !!! Whats the point of all this ?? I don't know, but I ain't starting any more projects today !!
15. How do ya get those pictures up by your names? I've looked around, but have no idea how to do it. Thanks, Glenn
16. Well, I FINALLY got to see the new Voyager today. The bike shop I got my Venture from last year, approx 30miles away, has 2 of them. He has the Blue and the Silver. They are very pretty bikes. Then, I sat on one. I thought the seat was hard, and as mentioned in a couple of other threads, the bodywork plastic looked and felt cheap. It really looked like I took my old 1500 Classic and bought the fairing & bags from a bargain bin and painted them up. They looked like add-ons. The wing and the Venture and the HDs look like everthing was designed as one. Everything looks like you wouldn't use it on another bike. The Voyager stuff looks like you could remove it and add it to almost any non-bagger. I was very disappointed - and I have been bugging the local dealers about getting one since January. I'm thinking I will just have to wear mine out. Hopefully the new Venture will be much better. But I have a feeling they will go to the V-Twin - Either drop the V-4 or make a V-Twin Bagger and call it something else. craigr
17. Help: Can someone please me to the mixter screws on the four carbs on my 08 RSV so I can turn the screws out a 1/4 turn. I looked on tech page but can not find them. Thank you for your help in advance.
18. OK since all technicians are lazy. Does any one have a pic of the covers for the PMS (pilot mixture screws) I am hoping that I won't have to pull the carbs to get the anti tamper plugs. I just picked up a set of Shogun pipes and the K&N's are on order so I'm going to have to fatten her up a tad. I haven't even looked for them yet so you can go ahead and laugh at me if it is obvious where they are. Like I said I'M lazy
19. Stopped in at the local Kaw dealer where they had a new silver/black Voyager on the floor. Someone from Virginia already had a deposit on it. Salesman walked over to us as we were standing by the bike, looked out in the parking lot, saw my 99 out there and made the comment so, you're looking to "upgrade" from a Venture? Well, that didnt set quite right with me. Somehow I dont see it as an upgrade. But thats just sales talk I guess. As we talked about the new bike I pointed out several differences, from the warranty period, the lack of a driveshaft and the small fuel tank. He said the belt drive was designed for about 60k of service to which I replied well I have 60k on mine now and all it needed was a little dab of lube on it and its good for another 60k. Mind you I wasnt confrontational, just pointing out the differences. I did say that im waiting to see what Yamaha comes up with in the future as far as the Venture goes. I also pointed out the lack of a CB, rear speakers, etc. No doubt about it, this is a nice bike but after weighing all the differences, I think ill keep my 99 a bit longer.
20. Don't know if this is the right forum to post this in but, after reading it, it reminded me of this site and the people that are on this site. That the people here go out of their way to help people with their problems no matter how big or small. This is a good read for Memorial Day. I hope everyone had a good Holiday As a veteran, please read this, especially today under the conditions we are living On Memorial Day.... As I came out of the supermarket that sunny day, pushing my cart of groceries towards my car, I saw an old man with the hood of his car up and a lady sitting inside the car, with the door open. The old man was looking at the engine I put my groceries away in my car and continued to watch the old gentleman from about twenty five feet away. I saw a young man in his early twenties with a grocery bag in his arm, walking towards the old man. The old gentleman saw him coming too and took a few steps towards him. I saw the old gentleman point to his open hood and say something. The young man put his grocery bag into what looked like a brand new Cadillac Escalade and then turn back to the old man and I heard him yell at the old gentleman saying, 'You shouldn't even be allowed to drive a car at your age.' And then with a wave of his hand, he got in his car and peeled rubber out of the parking lot. I saw the old gentleman pull out his handkerchief and mop his brow as he went back to his car and again looked at the engine. He then went to his wife and spoke with her and appeared to tell her it would be okay. I had seen enough and I approached the old man. He saw me coming and stood straight and as I got near him I said, 'Looks like you're having a problem.' He smiled sheepishly and quietly nodded his head. I looked under the hood myself and knew that whatever the problem was, it was beyond me. Looking around I saw a gas station up the road and told the old man that I would be right back. I drove to the station and went inside and saw three attendants working on cars. I approached one of them and related the problem the old man had with his car and offered to pay them if they could follow me back down and help him. The old man had pushed the heavy car under the shade of a tree and appeared to be comforting his wife. When he saw us he straightened up and thanked me for my help. As the mechanics diagnosed the problem (overheated engine) I spoke with the old gentleman. When I shook hands with him earlier, he had noticed my Marine Corps ring=2 0and had commented about it, telling me that he had been a Marine too. I nodded and asked the usual question, 'What outfit did you serve with?' He had mentioned that he served with the first Marine Division at Tarawa, Saipan, Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal . He had hit all the big ones and retired from the Corps after the war was over. As we talked we heard the car engine come on and saw the mechanics lower the hood. They came over to us as the old man reached for his wallet, but was stopped by me and I told him I would just put the bill on my AAA card. He still reached for the wallet and handed me a card that I assumed had his name and address on it and I stuck it in my pocket.. We all shook hands all around again and I said my goodbye's to his wife. I then told the two mechanics that I would follow them back up to the station. Once at the station I told them that they had interrupted their own jobs to come along with me and help the old man. I said I wanted to pay for the help, but they refused to charge me. One of them pulled out a card from his pocket looking exactly like the card the old man had given to me. Both of the men told me then, that they were Marine Corps Reserves. Once again we shook hands all around and as I was leaving, one of them told me I should look at the card the old man had given to me. I said I would and drove off. For some reason I had gone about two blocks when I pulled over and took the card out of my pocket and looked at it for a long, long time. The name of the old gentleman was on the card in golden leaf and under his name....... 'Congressional Medal of Honor Society.' http://www.cmohs..org/ I sat there motionless looking at the card and reading it over and over. I looked up from the card and smiled to no one but myself and marveled that on this day, four Marines had all come together, because one of us needed help. He was an old man all right, but it felt good to have stood next to greatness and courage and an honor to have been in his presence. Remember, OLD men like him gave you FREEDOM for America . Thanks to those who served...& those who supported them. America is not at war. The U.S.. Military is at war. America is at the Mall. If you don't stand behind our troops, PLEASE feel free to stand in front of them! Remember , Freedom isn't Free, thousands have paid the price so you can enjoy what you have today.
21. Was putting the red light bar on my bike and the wife thought this would be a good idea. The more I looked at it the more I liked it. shouldn't have to worry about being seen now! Dale
22. I was looking at the lights on your bike (your profile album). I like those. Especially the ones on either side of the fairing and those under the trunk on either side of the light bar. You don't happen to have a "How to" on that do ya? I looked in the tech section but couldn't find anything on that. If not a how to, at least what lights you got and where from. Thanks
23. First of all just a reminder that you might want to check your air filters for the new riding season. I myself seem to always over look them when changing out plugs or doing other maintenance to my bike. I am now wondering if this is part of a lower gas mileage I also noticed on inspection of these OEM filters that the top tap (spacer) was missing on my original filters. was that added later?... I also wonder if there is a better price for OEM filters at any other place? $29.04 for each filter. not sure if I want to bother with K&N yet.. Filters looked pretty good at 3,500 miles on them and now with 11,350 on it , this is what they looked like. Just thought I would share this... Jeff
24. just wanted to say thanks to slick97spirt for the carb sync he did on my bike last night. when we started it looked bad but after he hooked it up and adjusted it looked good on the tool and when i drove it home it sounded so much smoother. so again thanks Ken for your help.
