  1. After I installed leveling links it seem that my Venture has become very sensitive to the wind. Anybody experience this?
  2. I joined this forum in late 2008, back then my interest only was reading maintenance tips, fixes and the like, then I started to read the watering hole and got hooked up. I have owned my '86 Venture Royale for 21 years; 6K miles when I got it, it has now 42K miles. My other ride is a '93 Suzuki GSX1100G (dirty fast) Ok, the reason I'm writing this posting is to express my profound appreciation to all contributing members for their write-ups, know-how, instructions, etc. I just finished installing new larger battery cables, I got them from Barend, made installation thanks to Squidley's step by step instructions, by-pass the battery light sensor from GeorgeS's write-up; new Oddysey battery from Condor's write-up; Freebird game me the link to buy some other things a few months back. and from other members I also installed new ISO Kuryakyn grips, two new speakers and starter/solenoid. Avon/Venom rear tire (installed by a bike shop) Lastly, jut to mention that March of last year I met V7Goose and his brother Tom while they were here in El Paso, TX I have seen a lot of pics of your rides, places you have been, etc, I know the rule: got to post some pics! Here they are and thank you. Rudy:thumbsup2:
  3. Has anyone installed these lights. Looking for some feedback. http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee93/cevans1961/Bike%20Pics/th_venture_2005_Piaa_1100x_3.jpg?t=1285636555 Thanks, Chuck
  4. I was riding my 2009 RSV South on I-35 outside of Norman OK this morning. It was before sunrise and raining when I came within a couple of feet of getting hit by a gravel hauler. I was in the right lane going 55mph when I saw this truck closing on me from the rear pretty fast (70-75mph est.) I kept waiting on him to change lanes and he did not. At the last second I went over to the right shoulder. I came close to losing it. My friend was in front of me on a very well lit HD Ultra. The truck changed lanes and went around him. So, I realize I need some additonal lighting. I turned on my hazards after that until I got out of the rain. Has anyone installed the Diamond R light Bar? Are you satisfied with it? I have moto-lights for the front but have not installed them yet. Thanks, Steve
  5. A few weeks ago I started a thread asking everyone to keep and eye out for an low mileage fair priced RSV Midnight. Well Jack aka jblue1555 came through. He sent me a PM about his bike and after a few phone calls, a few emails and 1500 mile trip my wife and I are now the proud owners of one very chromed out Midnight with only 18,000 miles on it. Jack told me he had alot of chrome installed and sent me a few pics. I thought it looked pretty good and he offered it to me at a price that was more then fair. When I got to he house he had it parked in the drive "shining in the sun" I could not believe all the stuff he had put on this bike. I'd make a list, but I'll still be typing tomorrow. He even installed a hitch, something I always wanted on a touring bike for those long trips along with the drivers back rest Jack put on. It sounds great I guess thats because of the chrome work pipes. I'll add some pics if I can figure out how to. Thanks again for the great deal Jack. Stacy and I'll will get a lot of smiles/miles on it. I'll let you post what you sold it to me for if you want.
  6. Tore the rear of the bike off for maintenance and look what I discovered- a crack in one of the grooves in the middle of the tire. Just installed last year right before the Int'l Rally. Warranty issue?
  7. Well I finally got some solid motor mounts, a "CondorBrace", and a new Metzler all put on. I also repacked the swing arm bearings, cleaned all the bushings and installed zerks in the rear suspension. I also bought a chin cowl from Alabamacameo and got it installed today after I wrapped the front header pipes with header wrap to help cut radiant heat. I also took out the Y.I.C.S. and I have no more popping or coughing going on. Then I got my carb synchronizer from the guy in the big brown truck, so I synced the carbs this evening. Hopefully I'll have some new to me pipes late this week or early next week. This thing feels like a whole new bike! Much better handling. The solid mounts didn't seem to add any sort of vibrations. It even sounds a bit quieter with the headers wrapped. This winter I'll be putting the original engine back in so it will be getting some new gears to avoid the second gear issue. I'll also be adding a higher output stator and a spin on oil filter adapter. I'll have to make sure the valves are adjusted good while its out as well. About the only thing I can think of that's left on my to do list is to make a header style collector similar to the ones made by Markspipes. Unless of course one pops up for a reasonable price either on eBay, Craigslist, or on here. Now I just have to find the time to give it a good/quick wash before the big ride in Durand, WI. this Saturday. The 12 hour night shift really doesn't help give a bunch of extra time on my hands. Well here a few pics of the chin cowl that I got from Alabamacameo installed. It's a bit different than the ones I've seen on all the other 1st gens. I think it looks a bit sportier. Thanks, Bill
  8. I installed some 7" electric brakes on the Timeout camper and tried it out yesterday and I really like. I used the Podigy controller and have it set with no noticable pull on the bike, the trailer feels like it is stopping with the bike. Stops or much better and quicker. I tried a few 60mph emergency stops and she stops good and smooth. Down hill don't feel the trailer pushing me. I know some will not agree with doing this but I feel much better having them on with a 345# trailer. Another thing is I mounted the controler on the trailer with the hot wire comming from the battery with a switch mounted on the bike where I can cut it off if needed (flat tire, slow manuvering , one brake quits working etc.) I found this idea on delphi motorcycle trailer forum and many on there have there's mounted this way with no ill effects. My computer is down so I'll post some pics later.
  9. Well I finally got my rear sequential LED turn signals installed and working properly. I had them done last year but never got around to getting them put in until this week. Now I just have to get the fronts done. What do ya think? Thanks, Bill
  10. I just installed a zumo 660 on my 04 Venture. I up graded from a 450. I still have the fairing split but should have it back on tomorrow night. I drilled a 1" hole to the left of the left hand speaker "right hand as you are looking from the front towards the back of the bike" with a wood drill bit to run the cables through. Simple and up high and there is plenty of room. I will send a picture of the hole in a little bit. What I wanted to share was that I took Squidley's advice from his "Installing an Aux line splitter" and went to Radio Shack and bought the cables he mentions in his article. I can now hear the Garmin through the head sets. The install was cheap and easy. Thanks again Squid for a job well done. P.S. The picture did not turn out. Sorry.
  11. Selling the hitch and bumper I bought for my 83 VR and never installed. See ad in classifieds.
  12. I have Carbon One's Crash Bar Braces that never been installed Guess who are the ones holding the 3 beer bottles at the 2010 FreeBirds Maintenance Day
  13. Well Ponch has done it again..Came from Houston to my place,(Appx 200 Miles) and installed a few more accessories on my GoldWing..I cant tell colors that well and am afraid to mess with electrical things. We took the Wing apart installed the Aux swith on the brake reservoir then connected my "ring of fires" front and back the installed the harness to make my spoiler a running light and brake light. I could not have done it without his help..Thank You Ponch! I always feel like a guy sould be recognized for their willingness to go out of their way even though he doesnt really care fr the attention. Tom
  14. Hey everyone! Feel like an idiot! Totally missed the Maintence Day Rally at Freebirds house! Somehow the day just got by me. I blame my wife, she had too many "honey-do" things on my list around the house and I completely forgot. Anyway, here's my problem. My 1983 Venture is just giving me fits. I really would like to have someone that is more mechanically inclined then myself stop by and have a look/listen and maybe give me some advice. So if any members are in or around the local Akron Ohio area, PLEASE PM me! This old girl just doesn't want to start for me anymore. And I've got a trip planned for next month, and don't want to miss out. I'm not sure what the problem is, but ever since I bought her she's had trouble starting. I always have had to use the choke. (Except when she's good and hot). I've replaced the spark plugs, ran what seems like gallons of seafoam through her. Replace the wires. Installed a new OEM battery and installed thicker battery cables. The starter seems to turn just fine, she just dosen't seem to want to turn over. So, I'm looking for a little more hands on. If you've got the time I sure could use the help. Thanks
  15. Well, it actually took me about 5-6 hours, but the end result is very nice. I installed a set of new old-stock Road King mufflers on my 98 RSTC2. The hardest part was making my brackets, but I got to use my new wire-feed welder, Ye-ha. Sound is much better than the drilled out stock mufflers. BTW, I didn't drill them out, they were already that way when I bought the bike. They sounded terrible. Getting the new mufflers to slide over the exhaust pipe was a real pain, with lots of grinding and filing, but finally got it. Thanks to all for the information and pics.
  16. Well I'm sitting in a library waiting while my triple tree's are installed. They said about 4-5 hrs. Hopefully the wait will be worth it. Everyone says that my bike and side car will be a lot easier to handle once they are installed. 4 plus hours with nothing to do is pretty boring but its no worth have the wife pick me up and return me later, its a 1 1/2 hr ride and the shop is in a small town
  17. As most of you know, I have been laid up after my back surgery. Well, I am getting around a bit better now, and have been putting in the shop although I am still not allowed to officially work on motorcycles yet. I took a set of louvers from the side covers of my 87'VR and installed the Sheet Metal inserts I had gotten last year. (A BIG Thanks To Randy For The Inserts) I mounted a string of blue LED's in the inserts and put a back on them to protect the LED's from the heat and I also installed a string of blue LED's in the front air scoop as well. Take a look at the pics, and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask! Earl
  18. Just got done mounting a tour pack. The pack is a cheap one, I think it cost around $135.00 but it had some cool LED lights installed. It seems to work okay for now. But I want to purchase a Harley tour pack if I can find one without breaking the bank.
  19. Anyone with the Baker Built Air wings installed have a GOOD, clear picture of the finished installation? The instructions showing a diagram of the fnished installation is about 2" x 2"...so it looks like a black "blob". I can't make out much detail...even with my "readers" on! Anyone?
  20. Just an FYI - the company called Powersport Superstore seems to be a very risky vendor. If you order something from them that that has some function and needs to be installed to see if it actually works, they will flatly refuse to authorize a return for anything that has been installed, even when they sold you a defective item. I personally find that business practice dishonest and will not deal with them again. Goose (Note that this is NOT the same company as Motorcycle Superstore. I have had many perfectly fine transactions with Motorcycle Superstore and will continue to use them.)
  21. Finally got the Hannigan LT Sidecar installed. Already done a couple of rides with a pillion and sidecar passenger. I will probably get the raked Triple Tree's installed. Other than the arm strong steering I am really pleased with the set up:big-grin-emoticon:
  22. Keep in mind, I'm no wrencher. I fancy myself a good problem solver, but generally have stuck to electrical, software, etc... Mechanical stuff (things with engines) have always scared me. But with help (especially from Sleeperhawk and Wanderer when I first got the bike) from all the VR crowd and this amazing site, here's what I've done to the bike in the last couple months: REmoved front tire Checked front brakes Got new tire and reinstalled (perelli rear reversed) REmoved rear tire replaced rear brake pads greased splines and hub finger thingydings replaced rear tire (kumho- darkside experiement in process) Added Wolo horn with carbon one's bracket and harness dynamic clusters in blinkers harley taillight bar lightbar under trunk (soon blink/brakes with Ponch's help) Installed Mic Mutes removed casette deck and made storage area diamond R drink holder (and have backup koozie for the tank cap) replaced missing chrome spacer for saddlebag installed extra cig lighter under seat installed back-off unit installed custom wiring block to wire up the rear lights and make it easy to add more (my own experiment in beta testing) rewired the trailer lighting harness to fix a short installed signal stabilizer (still intermittent fast blink though) Cut windshield down to shorty installed butler seat and bag nuts rk pipes with heat shields from stock pipes riveted on to hide connection installed buddy rich cable installed iphone cradle installed zumo 765t chrome trim on saddlebags and bottom of tank Changed front speakers to polk's Tightened steering head bearings (dang they were loose) change oil change battery Here's the immediate to do list- some lighting for the side of the bike- running lights more lighting in rear kuryakan volt meter on dash Installing a aux jack in the underside of fairing (new idea I have. if it works, I'll write it up) add extra 12v power jack to underside of fairing on right side('nother experiment of mine) f4 shield install (dang when will that thing get here?) make and install leveling links Couldn't have done it without VR and all of you guys in here (and gals). Thanks for everything. I must have gotten at least $1200 out of my $12 already!! Amazing site full of amazing people.
  23. Based on the recommendation of some here, I installed a Utopia backrest on my '06 Midnight Venture. The install couldn't be easier and what a tremendous difference, no backstrain or tension. Also, no more slouching and hurting my bad back. If you need a backrest, Utopia has m vote.
  24. I installed leveling links on my RSV today and immediately felt like I was riding a new bike. I can't believe how much easier it is to handle. Two things: I felt more air as I was sitting up higher and looking over the windshield - and I used my Carbon One adapter and couldn't take the bolt out so I had to lower the bike and just use the jack. If you haven't installed the links you are missing a great ride!
  25. just got back from my bike insp.........tech says 5/32 tread on the front....9/32 on the rear.....these are new e3's installed 300 miles ago.........no way, right ?....i got 13,000 + on the original 404's......
