  1. Need to get a GPS for our trip over next year. It's going to be mounted on the '84 I purchased with utadventure's help. I don't want anything fancy....no bluetooth, phone, music--just a GPS!! [Will be putting a J&M CB kit on the bike] So what would everyone recommend I get?
  2. Just a heads up. WOOT is featuring a Motorola GPS this morning. Price is right. If you want a cheap GPS to play with, here it is. http://www.woot.com/
  3. About a month ago I went stupid, and didn't lock the Suburban parked out in the front of the house. Someone decided to releave me of my GPS, mount, and power cord. The GPS was my original, not worth reporting due to value, so I just wrote it off. I bought it off WOOT for $99 new. Last night while cruising Craigs List, lo-and-behold, there it is. http://sacramento.craigslist.org/ele/2049450733.html I still have the original box, serial number, etc., but I'm not quite sure what to do??. Full frontal assault with a pair of 9mm Glocks, or call the authorities. I chose the later. Never did file a theft report, so had to do that online. Without a report, no crime had been committed. Now waiting to be called by a detective. Meanwhile I did send the seller an email from my 'stealth' hotmail account and he replied. I now have his name. The reason I know it's my GPS is that in the pictures it has a strip of while velcro pile right above the screen. I put it there to hold a home made hood I used when I rode the '83 to Ft Collins in '07. The chance of two of them having that are pretty rare. Like chicken lips. I was told to call Friday morning if I hadn't heard from a Detective by then. I don't think the guy is going to sell it very soon as his asking price is on the high side, and GPS's are all over the place on CL. http://www.cast-aways.com/CONDORPICS/Sam-Side.jpg
  4. I'm researching for the best GPS nav system to add to my bike. I'm sure some of you have experiences (good and bad) that might help me with my decision. Obviously I want something that has a large readable screen. But, it also needs to be visible in an outdoor situation and not be prone to breakdown due to vibration. I'm not even sure what other criteria are important...you tell me!
  5. I am looking for a Garmin V GPS. For what I use a GPS for it is perfect ( basic Speed o ) If you have one that works, and is reasonable let me know. Email: revgp@starband.net
  6. Bummer day Sunday. Had a new 660 all hard wired up to our RSTD. Wife and I wear the Scala G4 headsets. Updated software and firmware on all devices. I'm just relaying my experience. Not intended at all as a bashing on any product. We messed around and rode about 300 miles to test it out. I can't come up with any pro's at this time, so it's the cons that had me remove the tank and seat again last night to package the garmin zumo up for return. This was a new gps, not a refurb. 1. The screen was totally washed out. I understand there are aftermarket products made to shield or cover the screen. Not going there. For over 600 bucks, I should be able to view the screen in daylight. Being a motorcycle, my reason to purchase though was the bluetooth voice to headset ability. 2. Voice nav is crisp and clear in the car. Through the headsets, I experienced a lot of static and could not understand the street names or directions even around my neighborhood where I knew what the gps was supposed to be saying. Wife and I could not communicate through the intercom to each other clearly until I disabled the bluetooth on the gps. So for us, it's back to good ole' paper maps and spontaneous trips with more stops to rest our aging buttox numbness and point our fingers on the map to figure out where we're headed.
  7. So I have the one TomTom RAM Mounts dosent make a base for....go figure! SWMBO says there is no new GPS in my future. Any mounting suggestions? Anyone want to trade for something I can mount to my RSV w/o difficulty? Thanks!
  8. Alrighty everyone...been lurking for about a year in the forums...in the past week ive been all over the GPS forums but im just confusing myself more...so please help me out a little here... I am looking for a GPS for my 04 RSMV, This will be my first GPS purchase so i am relying on the experiences of everyone here. I ride a lot, 20k to 25k a year, but i mainly stay local. I am going to start my longer trips this fall though (Oklahoma is first) and need a reliable unit to guide me along the way. I mainly use my Ipod for music, so the MP3 player may be a good idea, my wife rides with me so i need one that wont effect the intercom either. Ive looked at a re-furbished Streetpilot 2730, a nuvi 7xx series, and a few zumo's (550/650). Please post yoru experiences with your GPS' models, how you mount it, how you waterproof it (bag, drybox, unit itself), how the screen looks in the sunlight, and any other info you would like to share. Also, for the "non-motorcycle" model users (Nuvi), do you think the vibration of the bike causes the problems that have been previously discussed on the forum?
  9. I will be installing a GPS unit next week on my '05 RSV. I am looking for the Auxiliary DC jack that the owners manual (3-21) says is "at the front". Is this jack located under a cowling somewhere? The manual shows a picture, but not a good one. Another question is do I want to use that jack or just run the GPS from the battery? Thanks.

    Spot Gps

I have seen that some use the spot gps for others to track there locatoin on long trips....Is there anyone that can fill me in on the ins and outs of this item.
  11. I know this is the wrong forum but i figured more people would see it and respond here about it. I am thinking about getting the Garman 550 and was wondering how much it cost, where is the best place to get one, is it or will it be outdated soon since they have the Garman 660 out, and where can i get the brackets that hold it? I think i would like for it to sit above the radio maybe? Also until i can get it hardwired in. does it come with a power cord that i can plug into my fairing and use it until i get it connected to the wiring harness? I'm not a tech guy and for some reason the GPS thing just seems complicated to me, with having to by the mounting brackets from another place, and which GPS to buy etc. I just know that i have heard alot of good things about the Zumo 550 and now i am seeing that the 660 is out by Garmen. Sorry for sounding like a Dummy, but i just need some help with this. Thanks.
  12. A brief history: When I purchased my '05 it came wired up and with a GPS mount on the handlebar(even found a sunshade in the trunk). But, the previous owner took the unit. Through some detective work it was determined that the old unit was a Garmin 2620. I talked to a guy at a GPS booth and he said the 2730 will also fit the mount, and has the same wiring, but is a far superior unit. So .... I have been scouring Ebay, Craiglist, want ads, google searches etc. for years now. They go for about $125 to $150 used, missing parts, not map updated etc. on Ebay. But I could go out and buy a new Garmin for $150 .... but not wired for it and I'd have to buy a mount. Getting frustrated trying to bid for the things (why would so many people want 5 year old GPS units for the same price as a new ones is beyond me!) Before I ask .... what would you do? .... keep in mind I have unique hands .... extra thumbs!!! So, what would you do.... keep trying or is it worth all this effort for an old unit, should I rip out the wiring and go for a newer unit??? Thanks!

    GPS ?

Is it just me or what? I've been looking to upgrade from my current GPS unit, a Mio c520 I've had for about 3 years now. My only real complaint with it is that it washes out in sunlight, so it gets hard to see. Anyhow I just can't justify $500-$950 for a mc unit. After looking at several brands it sort of gets confusing after a while. Personally I don't care for the Gamin's series. To me they don't have the features that my current Mio unit has and also ,to me anyhow, seems awkward to use. Anyone care to recommend alternate models, brands? Something with one of the larger screens is prefered & easly seen in bright sunlight. Larry
  14. Wondering if anyone experienced something similar or can confirm diagnosis. 2006 RSV. 46K miles. Many miles and a few years ago , I inserted a three-way stereo aux line splitter inside the faring...1) to GPS, 2) to Satellite radio/iPod, 3) to cassette aux jack. Also have a Buddy Rich cable. Stereo sound through any of the three stereo aux extension cables worked OK for most of the time, though have had to live with much lower volume levels, especially if two items were powered on at the same time (I.e. GPS and iPod) compared to the volume level of the AM/FM radio. Over time, the audio from the GPS has developed a lot of snap/crackle/pop and the audio from the iPod would drop in and out of the headset speakers (sometimes left speaker, sometimes right speaker) - not getting complete stereo. I would jiggle the male jack into the GPS or iPod and could hear the stereo fidelity cut in and out. I would replace the aux extension cable and use dielectric grease and everything would be good for a few months. Problem progressed such that I can't get stereo fidelity out of either GPS or iPod (I.e. half the sound in only one speaker). to the point where jiggling the extension cables doesn't fix it and replacing the extension cables doesn't fix it. I also replaced the three-way splitter to no avail. Through process of elimination I have found that the female aux pigtail that is hard wired into the radio is not putting out stereo sound, so every splitter and extension cable downstream is also not putting out stereo sound. Would I be correct in believing that the radio aux pigtail has failed? Should this be covered under warranty? Major bummer. Anyone experienced anything similar? Thanks David
  15. I added a y adapter to my AUX input as suggested here so that my garmin could be plugged in. I thought I would still be able to listen to my iPod through the AUX input by the cassette deck. Unfortunately, now when I plug my iPod in (even when the gps is off). The audio is extremely weak. I discovered by accident that if I touch the back off the iPod to the fuel filler cap that the audio is normal!! I need to take it all apart again. Perhaps my plug became disconnected while I taped it. It's weird though because I certainly tested it??? The grounding thing is really strange too... The gps audio is fine...
  16. I was thinking about getting a GPS unit for the bike with the ability to move it to the car as needed. The motorcycle specific ones are way out of my price range. I was looking at this one in the link and it looked pretty good at a decent price. Anyone have any pro or con info on this or similar units like the garmin 255? Is it worth the price? Will it hold up? I know nothing about GPS units so any info would be appreciated. http://www.thegpsstore.com/Garmin-Nuvi-265WT-Wide-Screen-GPS-System-P1924.aspx
  17. I'm sure you all will hear about it soon enough! Last weekend I went on a ride with Big Tom up to Lake Ontario and when we got there for lunch I turned off the GPS and put it in the trunk. Well, when Earl called me this week for our address that wasn't coming up on his GPS, I ran out to the garage and got the GPS out of the trunk, turned it on, and gave him the coordinates over the phone. Unfortunately, it didn't find itself on the satellites yet when I gave him the coordinates! He called from an area which should have been about an hour away, and two hours later we were wondering what was taking soooo long! He called a second time asking me if we lived anywhere near the lake. He mentioned some street names that were totally unfamiliar to me, so, I gave him the address for an Auto Zone up the street from us and he told me he was an hour and a half away, on Rt 98 at the lake! Rt 98 comes into Arcade so I told him to head south on the route and I wil come north to him. We met up with them about 45 minutes later, took 2 other couples along for the ride. I finaly figured out what happened on the way home after we stoped for diner, which is another story...
  18. Which cell phone and service has the best GPS and gives the best/easiest system when requesting info directions ? Cb
  19. Since my sweetie is my full-time navigator (along with my GPS device), I often will give her the assignment to also be my on-board photographer when we are riding. In addition to either our video camera or still cameras, she will also sometimes have to look-up information on my GPS or cell phone while we are riding. This involves her handling some rather expensive devices which I would be pretty upset if she happened to accidentally drop one of them. Now, my cameras have wrist straps on them, so they are pretty safe. But, neither my Garmin GPS or my Motorola Droid have wrist straps. Has anyone here figured-out a way to attach some sort of simple, safety tether to a small portable, electronic device? I wouldn't be surprised if someone actually manufacturers them. I'm thinking of something similar to one of these: http://www.kabletek-flexweave.com/flexweave.htm I'm just not sure how I would attach something like this to a cell phone, GPS or an iPod. Any suggestions? I'm sure this isn't an original idea. Thanks guys! Be Safe! Pete.
  20. Had my GPS on my "new to me" 2000 Venture. I noticed that my speedometer was over estimating my speed by about 10% vs. my GPS. I am assuming that the GPS is accurate. Any thoughts on what could be up with the bike that would make the speedometer overestimate? Thanks, Bob
  21. connected their gps to the AUX circuit and been able to add another device at the same time. We are listening to these devices called walk abouts which basically are books on tape in one unit. when we plug one into the circuit, (I have split the circuit) with the gps connected, nothing works. I thought others were also doing this. Was I wrong? Bob
  22. My wife and I are planning our 2011 summer vacation. We going out to ride the Dragon and other sites while we are there. So where is a good place to stay? We are leaving from Northern WI. Any good routes to get there. We will have a gps also. Just looking for some good info to make it a little easier. Thanks Rich
  23. Recently I split the fairng to install Sat Radio & GPS. I removed the tape deck to make a storage pocket and installed a 3 way spliiter for the aux connection. What I found out was that I could hear my Sat Radio fine until I plugged the audio cord into my GPS and then I could not hear the Sat Radio. Is there no way I can listen to SatRadio and have the GPS vocie over when turns come up? Anyone have a similiar experience / fix for this.
  24. Ok I installed a TomTom Rider 2 on my 2nd gen a couple of weeks ago. Here is a report on my impressions so far. Again my personal opinions. First The Good; It is easy to install. The Ram Mount and cradle work pretty well. The unit snaps in and out of the cradle easily and feels solid. The wiring is very simple. I just soldered the ends to the back of the accessory plug behind the fairing. The unit turns on automatically with the key but I have to power it off. Satellite locks are very quick. Usually under 40 seconds. Rerouting is also very quick. This is usually good but sometimes it can be a problem which I will bring up later. The thing is impervious to rain. Even the cover for the usb jack has a solid rubber seal around it. The light gray color does not absorb as much heat from the sun as black does. It may be minor but since heat is a killer of electronics I like this small detail. It even has a little built in visor, nice touch. The touch screen works well even with gloves. The Bad; The screen washes out easily. It doesn't have to be in really bright sunlight either. While it offers several screen color options none work well in sunlight. It is hard to follow a map you can't see. The automatic zoom is also a real problem. There is no manual zoom or pan functions while moving. That is not to bad when navigating a predetermined route but when you just want to use the map you can't even see two blocks away. When you are allowed to zoom out it is only temporary and the map returns to it's automatic setting after a few seconds. This makes it almost impossible to find alternate routes with the gps map, very frustrating. The use of the menu is also limited to four buttons when moving. It is called a Safety Driving Menu. You can't make outgoing calls with the Blue Tooth while moving either. So you are forced to stop to scan the map or make changes etc. This creates some new problems. When you pull off the road say into a parking lot (not that a motorcycle would ever be driven off the road or heaven forbid into a parking lot) the gps will assign your position and direction to a nearby street and quickly recalculate your route from that artificial point. Frequently, as in every time you pull off the road, sending you off in the wrong direction. Who ever thought of this feature should be hung. I understand it is to make sure the gps shows you on a road when you are navigating but it creates more problems than it solves. And sometimes you are not actually on a road. There is no internal speaker and no speaker connection. So it is their Blue Tooth helmet speakers or nothing. As far as I know it will not work with any other helmet speakers or Blue Tooth set up. Like most others today their user guide sucks. I don't take my computer along on the bike so the CD is useless on the road. I would take a good user manual along. Like so many others the claim is to be environmentally friendly and save paper. But they included a useless user guide with little information in half a dozen different languages. Then tell me to print my own from the CD. A pet peeve of mine. When navigating the maps miss the second largest freeway interchange in the state keeping you on the wrong side of the freeway until you are two blocks past the exit. Then it wants to turn you around and do the same thing going the other way. Would Like to Haves; A screen that doesn't wash out so easily. An automatic zoom override that stays where I put it. The ability to pan a map. A better edit function for the favorites including a line for notes and the ability to change the address. Larger street names. I don't have a lot of time to squint at the map while I am riding. A speaker connection so I could plug it into the bikes auxiliary jack. A map scale indicator. Get rid of the automatic street assignment. Summary; For a motorcycle gps it sure isn't very rider friendly. It is better than no gps, but not by much. I will not buy another TomTom, Rider or Car navigator. Mike
