  1. Hi, Thanks for the info on the "erratic fuel guage" found that the ground wire on the sending unit was bad. Now to my current problem: when I started the bike for the first time it ran poorly and would only stay running with the choke on. I have since changed the spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter and syncroniszed the carbs. The bike when cold runs bad(misses) when it warms up it does not respond well to throttle input and smells rich. If I hold the throttle at 3k rpms the bike has a miss that you can hear in the exaust. I have owned this bike for 4 years and it has always run great. Im stumped! Myrtle Beach is 3 weeks away and I was riding down and need to resolve this.
  2. Here's a question for thought. What's the diffrence between Seafoam and Lucas fuel treatment?I use Lucas in everything I own.Just read about Seafoam and was curious.
  3. Hi To All: I have an 83 Venture that I have just finished my "Spring Cleaning" of by removing all plastic and cleaning the bike completely. After replacing all the plastic the fuel guage now has no display and the red light is flashing. Thinking that the computer module might be the problem I tried another computer module that I have with the same results. When I turn the key on you can quickly see three (3) bars in the fuel guage and they go out. Has anyone seen or had this problem before?
  4. i got an 08 royalstar venture, today was the first time i ran the tank down low. i ran out of gas on the regular setting before the reserve light and fuel trip came on. i ran on reserve far enough to get off the freeway and to a station. the tank only took 4.3 gals. the book says it is a 5.9 gallon tank with .90 reserve. it should have taken at least 5 gals. is this normal for these tanks to have 1.6 gals on the reserve? does not sound like it should be. the light and fuel trip came on about two miles after i switched over to reserve.
  5. Truckers strike starting today of independent operators. A few years back I almost bought a dodge cummins diesel pickup. I'm glad I didn't now the price of diesel is crazy.A man told me today the older models are not running well on the new low ash fuel. Good luck truckers and drive safe.Think I might top off my fuel tanks just in case the pumps go dry shortly.
  6. Well, Fired up the 06 venture today and have a pretty heavy fuel leak coming from the front of the bike of all places. haven't taken the tank off yet but at this point its leaking from the bottom of the cowling around the radiator. when I shut the fuel off it stops. Bike seems to run fine but as soon as I turn the fuel back on she starts pouring out. First thought was stuck float pin but if that was the case wouldn't I see fuel coming from the overflow tubes? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. John
  7. Well today I relocated the fuel filter to under the seat. Let me tell you, even though I read an old thread on how to do this, it was still a major PITA! I can't see how someone can do it without removing the fuel pump. The screw to hold the rollover valve is almost impossible to replace because of the nut in behind which has to be held in place with fingers. I couldn't do it for anything so I used a cable tie and it worked real good. I spliced the fuel line where the filter was and cut the line under the seat and re-inserted the filter. Now I'm just waiting for my glass filter to arrive from J&P and after that I'll only have to change the filter element. I don't recommend anyone try this if you have large hands or if you're trying to cut back on swearing. I'm sure some of you who have relocated or changed the fuel filter can relate! Anyways, here's to Yamaha for this awful bit of engineering......
  8. So, I put the tags on, changed oil, filter, and seafoamed the fuel. Took off and proceeded to run 1 1/2 tanks of fuel through today. Come out to 366 miles. Went to Austin on the interstate, over to Canyon Lake, went and met JRichard, then went to Perdenales State park. Met some Valkyrie riders and rode with a few Harleys. Mocha is running top notch. After the SeaFoam and Marvel mystery oil in the crankcase the idle went from 950 to 1100. Gonna change plugs and put in synthetic this week. Bought a set of Morgan carbtune II's just to finish it off. Looking forward to next weekend and more hill country. Oh for the northern folks, my thermometer registered 78 in the back yard today. JRichard-you missed a great ride!!! JB
  9. My son inlaw called me last night and told me that when he started up his 07 R.S.V. it had fuel coming out on top of his radiator and he could not tell where it was coming from. He said he could not see because of all the stuff in his way. I would think carb. or fuel line. He just got it in september. the way things have come lose on mine I would say that it could very well be. Dave
  10. Who Is That Person Behind The Wheel? Truckers are found on highways, in truckstops, in service bays, on loading docks, on back roads and at fuel stops, and often they are the first at the scene of an accident. Their wives help them. Little boys follow them. Relatives don't understand them. Meals must wait for them. Weather can delay them. But nothing can stop them. A trucker is a paradox. He is a blue-jeaned executive with his office in the cab. He is a scientist who hauls dangerous chemicals and explosives, a purchasing agent in a baseball cap, a personnel director with grease under his fingernails, a poor eater with a fondness for burgers and fries, a student of geography and a weather watcher. He likes sunshine, children, smooth pavement, good traction, clean loads, dinner at home, weekends with his family, an unbuttoned shirt collar and country music. And there is a special place in his heart for his rig. He's not fond of city traffic, tourists who are rotten drivers, fuel prices, dispatchers, snarly recievers, kids in high-powered cars and least of all, drunk drivers. Nobody else can get as much satisfaction out of talking about trucks, truckers, good weather, homemade pie, strong hot coffee, kids, wives, sweethearts and the price of fuel. He is your friend and customer. He is your source of food, clothing, petroleum and natural resources. In fact, nearly everything in your life arrived in his truck. And when he comes home late at night after a long and tiring trip, the energy sapped from his hopes and dreams, he can be lifted up once more by those magic words, "DADDY'S HOME!" If you got it, a trucker brought it!
  11. I was wondering what was under the tank bib and if it had any real significance or if it was just decoration? I didn't want to pull it off if it covered anything up. Anyone have a picture of what it looks like under the bib? Not really thrilled with the look. I would prefer a clean top to the fuel tank.
  12. just got my 01 Venture 1 week ago with only 1,900 mi on it. It has been setting out side under a cover for 5 years - that's a crime in my book!previous owner rode it 4 times last 2 years. said he had it dealer serviced march 06 and again in march 07. fluids are fine I put new battery, new plugs, it would not start. dumped old gas and new high octane, by-passed fuel filter, fuel pump works. pulled carbs and cleaned corrosion, cleaned and blew out all jets, needles, orifaces. first try and it started right up!! can accelerate if choke closed But quits if open choke the least bit. But the right front cyl (#4?) is cold. Should I pull the carbs again? never did find anything broken or clogged in carbs, but all the brass was tarnished from moisture intrusion I presume. Anyone can you please help me out here? Very anxious to get it running!!
  13. I noticed the other day that the 83 was smoking some on high rpm's sitting in the garage did some checking and found that my diaphragm's had pin holes except #4. Also checked the plugs all but #4 was trying to foul out - wet fuel. #4 excellent shape. diaphragm's that had pin holes also had traces of fuel in them except #4 which was dry. So what I'm asking is will a bad diaphragm cause the plugs to stay wet with fuel? #4 diaphragm is in good shape and the plug look great as well tan color. If not what would I be missing to cause the plugs to stay wet ? maybe float levels to high? plugs -caps-wires replaced first of last season - carbs synchronized What's funny is how well the beast runs too. good idle runs out good no dead spots just noticed it started smoking on high rpm- fuel. buddy
  14. When I was taking my motorcycle training(to get cheaper insurance, back riding after 15 years of not) One task we had to do was accelerate to 60 km's/hr(about 40 mph) watch an instructor in front of you point left or right and you had to brake and avoid by turning the way he pointed... Sounds easy enough, except they also teach us to turn off our fuel petcock every time you leave the bike.. So I come back from a break, its my turn to do the test and halfway up to speed my bike bogs down......had to reach down quick and turn on the fuel while still trying to acheive that minimum speed for the test...I did it, but did not get up to a fast enough speed, I failed that test, was humiliated by "rookie riders", but I did pass the course...
  15. So now I learn that an RSV has no fuel injection as well as ABS. Wherever I go, the rave seems to be fuel injection! ABS is debated. Sometimes it seems to me that those who don't like ABS are those who are selling non-ABS bikes, but I could be wrong. I might be able to live with non-ABS, but fuel injection is always highly regarded when I read about it. However...I note that some on here ARE GLAD that the RSV does not have fuel injection. I am not a mechanic. So I don't know fuel injection from fuel rejection. I think it has something to do with not having a normal carburetor. I heard someone say that fuel injection is a wonderful thing to have when you have a bike that goes up the Himalayas. But I am not sure what it means or why people are happy with it or not. Can someone enlighten me here and tell me why I should be overjoyed that the RSV does not have fuel injection? Does this mean I will actually be able to fix something?
  16. I am still very new to the Venture, have under 2000 miles on my '07 but I have a few questions. 1. Does everyones cruise control when set and you let go of the throttle doe sit doees it drop almost 5MPH before coming back up to speed? 2. I bought a set of passing lamps used that came with the spacer but still cannot get the fairing off without almost completely removing the passing lamp bar, any suggestions on that. 3. How many gallons should there be left when the fuel light comes on, I filled up the other day with the fuel light on and still had 1.9 gallons, 2 fuel bars on the gauge and the reserve ODO came up but I was not on reserve. Thanks in advance for you assistance. I love the bike and look to have it for a very long time, or at least til it's payed off, and they release an update to it that is much better.
  17. Is there anyone out there that knows what number is printed on the fuel pump relay on an 83 standard? I'm not sure I have the right one.... Thanks in advance, Tim
  18. I never turn my fuel cock to off and have never had any problems. Recently I turned it to reserve and then to off and then back to on. I rode about 24 miles to Rich99's house to sync my carbs and when I got there he noticed that fuel was leaking from the front of the fuel cock where the switch was. No fuel was coming from around the hose. Just a slow drip. When I got back home, it had stopped and has not done it since but I have not moved the switch. This is my question. Can I just remove the fuel cock and take it apart and replace any o-rings that might be binding up or do I have to order a whole new one? Should I even worry about fixing it since it is no longer leaking? Please help! I do not want to catch fire riding down the road.
  19. Bought a used '87 Venture couple months back with 45K miles on it, very nice condition. Worked great for almost 200 miles. On the second day, coming back home from some local shopping (and the wife's first ride on it) the engine died out on the freeway like it lost electrical or no fuel. After 10 minutes was able to start it, and it ran for 100 yards and died again. 10 more minutes goes by and it started again, was able to run with low RPM the remaining 2 miles home. Felt like a "no fuel" issue, perhaps a clogged line/filter or fuel pump failure. Bike is 20 years old, found rust chips in the filter, not enough to clog the filter. Pump working fine. Maybe the line itself at the tank (running in reserve position full time as previous owner always did). Went through electrical, pickup coils OK, ignition coils OK, wires/caps/plugs OK but replaced them anyway. Engine seems to be running long term now, but backfiring through carbs, hard to keep running without choke on, running rough. Symptoms seemed to keep changing along the way. Cleaned all connectors, swapped out TCI no change. In place cleaning carbs, I spray carb leaner in ports and pour down some SeaFoam, no better. Did run better when carb spray shot down throat of 2 left carbs though (#1 and #2). Feels like a fuel issue still at play - maybe reason for misfire? Can make bettrer or worse with carb adjustments. Maybe carbs need severe cleaning. Compression all about 190# - great numbers for a 20 year old bike! Replaced all diaphragms. I have one good used spare if someone needs just one. 3 others have a small pinhole or about to develop one to three pinholes so might work for a short while if some is desparate. Got a Morgan Carbtune Pro and it sync'd up OK despite the constant misfire. Nice unit by the way. Sync'ed my 2007 Venture also really easy. Backfire through the carbs seemed to go away but still have misfire through exhaust. After much fiddling with carbs, including removing them for cleaning (but not tearing them open) and using some carb cleaner and light scraping to remove the heavy carbon buildup on the intake valves. No leaks that I can find in the intake manifold boots or vacuum hoses or caps. Still get misfire. Float bowl fuel level was OK. I did find in reinstalling the carbs the engine would run for a while and quit. Now I definately have a fuel problem. Pumped fuel and rust chips out of tank. The thick braided fuel line from the fuel pump passes through a spring clip at the top rear of the carbs. It squeezed the hose shut when in the clip (softened up over the years). I think early in the process I pulled the hose out of the clip I never put it all the way back in until now since it was hard to reach and that silently cured the fuel flow issue. Thinking back I suspect this is the orignal reason the bike died on the freeway. It gets just enough through to fill the bowls at idle speed or engine off. Still have misfire though. Seems like cylinders 3 and 4 are the main culprits now, but #1 and #2 react the most with carb cleaner down the throat. Really stumped at this point, read practically every related post on this forum for months now, found some similar threads, lots of good tips for certain things, but none a perfect match to my issues. Took it to the shop. Valves OK. Carbs tore apart, new rubber plugs and gaskets were needed, evidence of some leakage between sections, gaskets dried out, rubber plugs dried out. Now all system checked OK, new oil, coolant, lube, valve alignment. Still same problem. Constant misfire through the whole RPM range, especially under load. An intermittent in the pickup coils was a guess, but could not confirm. #3 and #4 seem to be affected. This is a long post reflecting the long journey and many hours in the garage and shop chasing and diagnosing and such. Problem is getting old by this point. Yesterday brought bike back home from shop. Now convinced all systems are working as designed, today I took a deeper look at the intermittant pickup coil theory. I wanted to somehow verify this before spending a load of money on this. Myself and shop ohmed them out to be in spec (about 116 ohms) except shop thought one was half value at one point. I am experienced in electronics design and repair (have tools and know how to use them ) so I put my dual trace oscilliscope on the pickup coil connector and compared them all with engine idling at 2K RPM. You get about 12 to 15 volt spikes - 1 positive pulse followed immediately by one negative pulse for each pass of the magnet. Engine still misfiring regularly, never saw a missed pulse though, and all stayed at the same voltage peaks. The pickup coils are declared good. Yesterday reading through some more postings here I picked up some more good tidbits. One person mentioned that these engines run very well on 3 cyclinders and other than lack of performance and low fuel mileage, it can be hard to tell if (only) one cyclinder stops working (bad plug wire for example). This would be key advice later on. I pull the #3 plug cap, misfire goes away, but runs about the same, rough. Install #3 and pull #4 and misfire is back but runs rough as before. Like the shop said, #3 and #4 do not seem to be pulling their weight. But why only #3 causing misfire? A mystery. With all systems verified to be working, but the bike not working right, I figure it was time try something new. I connected #3 input to the ignition coil to the input of #4 coil, left #3 coil disconnected. Engine now runs smooth but at 1000 RPM higher. Revs up clean. This verifies pulse train from pickup coils to TCI to #3 ignition coil input verified OK even though it was the misfire cylinder. You might now suspect the #3 ignition coil, wires, cap, or plug, except they all check out with test gear. Now that it is running nice on 3 cylinders I connect input to #4 ignition coil to the #3 ignition coil. Stays running nice. The suggestion that it should run smooth on 3 good cylinders rings true enough. RPM is 2000+ at idle through all of this to keep it running before. Short test ride is great. Then sync the carbs and set proper idle and all is as it should be now. Test ride is sweet. So the faults: 1. Squeezed fuel hose at clip near top rear of carbs (found very late in the process, unknowingly resolved early on) 2. In cleaning all connectors while chasing the original problem, symptoms changed to misfire and unknowingly had swapped the #3 and #4 ignition coils after testing them. Leads are not labeled and the longer connector from the wire harness actually goes to the rear ignition coil. 3. The coil input wire swap happened before the fuel line pinch was unknowingly resolved so there was never a period when the engine ran "right". Symptoms changed over time, but with the carb adjustments now thoroughly fiddled with, was hard to tell why or when. The good part of the story: 1. With my work and the shop visit the bike has a documented clean bill of health through all systems (except the shocks that leak air). 2. Visiting the Yamaha shop with my wife to get parts 1 week after this all started she sees the 2007 Venture and declares it ours, and directs that I sell the other one that left her stranded on the side of the freeway. (she is a Project Manager, makes decisions fast, especially when it means the possibility of her helping push the bike along the street far from home:cool10:). 3. Given #2 above the '87 bike being out of commision all summer did not prevent us from doing about 6 one- and two-day road trips since May 28th to July 9th. I now have a commute bike that seems like a lighter weight sport bike compared to the '07 Venture. There is definately more passenger space on the '07 though. I am 6'1" and find the '07 to have better leg/foot space for me and the passenger. The '87 passenger toes practically hit my calf and do often at stops manuevering into the footpeg slot behind the fairing. I like the louvers closing off the heat, and look forward to opening them during the winter commutes. Commuting is 1-up only so the passenger issues are not applicable. I added a backrest to teh '07 and the handle bars seem like a long reach still, despite my long arms, so several hours into a ride I feel it. Not sure how much longer I will keep the '87, but I enjoyed working on the bike, getting to know the '07 better via the similarity to the '87, and experiencing a bike I had wanted for many years in the 1980's but could not afford back then. I rode a XS1100 then. I added a full fairing and lowers, air shocks, double buckets, luggage racks, detachable side cases, engine guards, hiway pegs, and sliding back rest. Toured New England for 3 years with the wife before kids came along and moving to Washington (Seattle area) in 1985. Had a XS750 Special in Hawaii for 3 years before that 1100. Sold the 1100 in 1991 and after 18 years of carpooling kids in a cage, I (we actually) am back into big bikes again now. Great forum here, hope this post helps someone in the future. Happy trails, Mike
  20. Anyone have any idea when Star might introduce the '08 RSTD's and Venture's? Are do you know if either will come with fuel injection? Thanks, Chief
  21. Just refilled my old 83 with gas and upon returning home to garage discovered gas leak. It is a 'pressure' gas leak that goes away when bike is turned off. The bike starts up and runs great but once started gas leaks out below just forward of fuel pump. I checked the pump and hoses and it appears to be coming from up in the upper area of bike around gas tank and carb area. I sure hope the plastic gas tank hasn't cracked, (or) it could be a hose problem. I can't figure out how to check where the output of the fuel pump joins the engine. Anyone else ever have this problem? Just a bit too unsafe to ride to shop, if I can't resolve it, may have to call for a tow..gas hitting those hot mufflers is too risky. Thanks James
  22. Hello All, Iam getting my carbs in shape on my '87. In the process of cleaning, testing etc., I wanted to make sure the floats and needles seem to be working right so I took each carb, put it in a shallow tub and hooked it up to the fuel pump on the bike, with the float bowl cover off, to see that the float would, in fact, float an shut fuel off. OK, I assumed the the fuel pump would just pump, and pump until the float shut the fuel off. Is there any reason why I would have to turn the key off, and then turn it on again to get the pump to pump a little more. It will pump for about 5 seconds and then turn off, until I turn the key off and then turn it on again. If this is a normal function, maybe a safety feature since the bike is not running or something than all and well, but if there is a problem with the fuel pump, or something, I just wan to know. Thanks a bunch D
  23. Changed my fuel filter yesterday and is it just me or does anyone else think that something as basic as a fuel filter should be a lot easier to do? Why would they make something like that so hard to get at unless it was to make work for mechanics at dealerships? The nut that the roll over valve uses is almost impossible to get your fingers on and I have small hands. Even hard to get a wrench back there. Wouldn't that be a good place for a welded nut instead of a loose one? Anyway, got it done and I'd do it again to save the cost of labor but it sure was a PITA. Has anyone found an easier way?
  24. ok my 84 venture royale is running realy rich. you can smell the raw fuel when its running and mileage is down under 30 MPG. I've been running seafoam through it every other tankfull but it hasn't effected the MPG to much if at all. bike is running great aside from that. I love the bike but currently its costing me more then driveing my car. any idea where i can adjust how much fuel is being dumped into the engine or what ellse I should be doing to improve my MPG issue?
  25. What is the easiest way to lube the swingarm on my 86? i hope it wont be as difficult as replacing the fuel filter.
