  1. I have a 1997 Royal Star Tour Deluxe, I want to drain the old 5w fork oil and put 10w oil My front forks are all chrome (not sure if that makes a difference) Is there a way to drain and Refill the Fork Oil without taking he whole thing apart! Thanks pete ptynning@msn.com
  2. Does anyone know the procedure to split upper & lower fork tubes on a 2008 XL 1200 Custom? My son has one and he wants to powder coat lower fork tubes. A clip from service manual would be very helpful. Gary http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/PICT2684s.jpg
  3. Does anyone have some technical drawings of a fork brace for a first gen? I have a friend at a place in Ottawa here that would like to make me something interesting. I need a good fork brace so why not use state of the are metals!! I could give him the brace of my bike but that would stop the ridding and that would be crazy!
  4. I'm having my front forks resealed and new pregressives put in. The guy doing the work for me called me last night to say one of the fork tubes has a scratch on it. He's taking it to a machine shop today to have it "polished" out. I'm not sure what that means but wouldn't a scratch be a groove, not a raised ridge ? How would "polishing" help ? He's pretty confident, but not 100% sure, that it can be polished out so I was wondering , if it can't be polished out enough, and it's not too bad, would it be worth while trying to fill it with Locktite 660 and then polishing it down even ? Anybody ever try a filler on a fork tube scratch ?
  5. Well, got the Fork seals replaced last week. Not too hard to do, no surprises there. Manual says you need to remove the fairing... I say, No you don't. Just need a couple of special tools, and tada, no fairing removal or handlebars either. did the whole job in about two hours. including cleanup It looked like the oil had never been changed, ever. yuck. So I did Guide, and Slide bushings too. Some new sae 10 Yamalube, and it's all set for another 20 years, hehe, well maybe 5. Anyway, next up, Ride the damn thing. If any one is interested, I'll share my tips for non fairing removal. Oh ya, Found the key code, and had new keys made too. No cheap copies. Key code was easier to find than one might think, but that's for another Thread Later, Kerry
  6. We bought our '90 Venture about 8 weeks ago and have already ridden nearly 2000 miles on it. After reading many of the discussions here and getting more "in tune' with our bike, I decided to add the heavy fork brace and the Progressive fork springs to help cure the somewhat "flexy" feel in the front. Last Friday, I ordered both from the classified section here from the members posting them. I received the fork brace yesterday! all the way from California to here in Ohio. I just couldn't wait, so I installed it and went for a ride. What a difference! I began wondering if I needed the springs, but they are going to be installed before it is all over along with some new fork gaiters which are split in multiple places. Since the bike has only 12,000 miles on it and it spent a number of years on the center stand, the springs aren't that critical this week. One issue that I am puzzled by is the sound that is generated when I get the bike leaned over much more than about 70 degrees. There seems to be a bit of a "roar" from what I believe are the tires. It has Dunlop 404 tires on it at about 75% thst were mounted at the same time. Is this characteristic of these tires, or is there something else like a bearing bad? I don't have any experience with Dunlop street tires, all my other bikes have Avons on them. We are both extreemly pleased with this bike and want to have it in the stable for years to come so anything that might need to be addressed needs to be done soon. I appreciate the thoughts and wisdom of the group.
  7. I looked at an '87 VR with 50K miles on it today. Owner is asking $1200.00 dollars. I am tempted, but it has some "issues" that are obvious. First, it is beaten pretty badly. Plastic, vinyl, chrome, paint and metal pieces are all cracked, pitted, scraped, scarred, bent, gouged, loose, etc. They all seem to be in place, but they are pretty well abused and neglected. I kept looking though, because for the price I was more interested in the mechanical soundness of the bike than the cosmetics or looks. The owner cranked the bike and let it idle while we talked. The starter turned the engine over slowly, but it fired up quickly. The idle was rough, and it spit and sputtered for a moment after the start-up. The off-idle response was also noticebly sluggish when the throttle was twisted. I shut if off for a few minutes while the owner and I chatted about other things that needed attention. He told me the fork tubes were leaking, and would need serviced. He acknowledged they were probably empty of fluid after I easily squashed them all the way to the ground. He told me the bike had been tuned-up a year ago. Coulda fooled me. We also discussed how to remove the seat (he didn't know). I wanted to see if I could locate the source of an obviouse oil leak/seep. After a few minutes I started the bike up again, and it fired off pretty well. Twisting the throttle resulted in a sluggish (pathetic) throttle response. It gather RPM's rather slowly, and did not seem to have any umph off idle. It turned weakly while starting, but it did start. The owner later told me he had put a new battery in the bike this past spring. I have not ridden the bike yet. What things should I look for on this generation of Venture that might not be so obvious to the un-trained eye? If the owner will allow me to run it down the street I will go through the gears and see how the motor pulls and accelerates, runs at road speed, decelerates, etc. I also want to see if the thing will start, stop, hold a set speed, turn, track and other such important and interesting things. What should I expect to pay for fork seal replacement and fork service (and new Progressive springs?) for this rig? Are the brakes on the VR known to be durable/reliable? If there are carb problems on the Ventures are they a PIA to deal with? It has a oil weep somewhere on the back cylinder bank, as made visible by a considerable amount of gunk collecting on top of the rear engine case. Is this typical for a 23 year old Venture? Are the final drives on these bikes pretty durable, and do they give tell-tell signs if they are about to go out? Thanks for any input. If there other links or posts that addresses these issues, please advise. I would be glad to link to them; otherwise, I look forward to your replies.
  8. I have a question on the Fork Seal replacement instructions posted by Freebird if any of you have done it this way HERE In the part below where you remove the 8 or 10mm Allen Socket on the bottom of the fork, mine just keeps spinning around and around.. I didn't see in the instruction where I was supposed to do anything to stop it on the other side, but I am turning it counter-clockwise and it does not come loose, it feels like it is spinning a nut on the other end of it... Not sure how to proceed now my seals are leaking like crazy and bike front end is apart for this step. Any ideas would be appreciate... Thank you, Brandon Freebird's picture from this step http://www.venturerider.org/forkseals/george/12c%20%28WinCE%29.jpg
  9. I've got a '90 VR and I noticed a while ago that the forks seemed to be weeping, so I got energetic this last weekend and following a couple of the older threads on here I was able to open up the top end and add fork oil, I'm hoping to just get her through the summer and then this winter I'm planning on an entire front end rebuild.... Well everything went well or so I thought but when I rode it to work yesterday, the forks have absolutely no give, the CLASS system is running on high and I can't seem to get the air out of the front end, is it possible when I put it back together I pinched off an air line? Or maybe I added to much fork oil? I'm just looking for suggestions, I know I'm going to have to tear it apart agian tonight and see I am just hoping that one of you guys had the same issue and maybe save me a lot of trouble and cursing at it tonight.. Thanks in advance for your help, Bob
  10. 83 VR After all engine and clutch trouble, took on short test ride today. First time on anything so big. Sure can feel the horses:big-grin-emoticon: Still a little engine tuning to do, running pretty good, minor backfire in #3 (I know-seafoam)(recheck sync) Tach indicates ~1400, digital tach indicated 940 (if set correctly??), sounds like about 900, any slower would not idle. Is tach adustable? Biggest problem: Forks bottom out on little bumps. Came back checked air=zero, nada, zip. Pumped in about 2psi at a time and checked. At about 15psi forks shot up-spraying oil out of right fork seal. Pumped up to 18psi. 30 minutes later pressure = zero again. Forks still up, but pressed on frame and they fell back down. I know nothing about MC forks, never messed with them. Help! Suspect I am looking at complete fork rebuild. Where do I start. Thanks for all the help so far, Dingy, Rocket, Squeeze, MiCarl and many others Brian
  11. pics of my fork rebuild on 83 in reverse order at photobucket, start from last http://s767.photobucket.com/albums/xx318/bkuhr/fork%20rebuild/ sure rides great now, thanks all and this forum for all the advise. heres new link as photobucket has problems http://img560.imageshack.us/g/71oil.jpg/
  12. Been meaning to post this but been tied up as of late. Last weekend I had tightened my steering head bearings and removed the bars to get better access to the nut. I believe in the process I may have pull the little tube on the balance kit a little and when I took it to work the next day, the tube on the right fork came loose. I noticed this because I had some fork oil running down the fork. I didn't notice any adverse handling, and I am assuming that this because when the tube came off, the forks "balanced" out to 0 PSI. However, what does concerns me is that I lost some of the fork oil. How much "loss" should I be concerned with? Doesn't look like I lost a whole lot, but it is kinda hard to tell as oil, as most of you know, seems to spread easily Also, do I absolutely need the little white thing that slips over the tube and the nipple, as it seems to have disappeared, and would a small zip tie work as a decent replacement, if needed? Thanks in advance
  13. Put in an order for the progressive fork springs...there on the way...one of the boys here at work mentioned the use of Dextron VI (transmission fluid) in lieu of 10wt fork oil. I took a peek on my greatest reference tool (this site) and found little info on the subject. It would appear that some folks have done it but I'm just wondering what the ramifications, if any, there are or would be. Plse chime in......
  14. I just replaced the fork seals, bushings and added progressive springs to my 88 Venture. I used the instructions from the Forum (Freebird) and got the parts from Buckeye Performance (Great person to deal with and excelent parts) everything went fine except when it came to seating the top bushing. If you have the same problem try this. Take a 3 inch piece to (1 1/2) PVC and cut one end so that it is at a 90 to the side. Then half the piece so that you can put it arround the fork tube with just the bushing below it. Then just use it like a slide hammer. This worked very well for me but remember not to try this on the seal! I wish I could say that there was a big improvement with the progressive springs but I can not realy tell because I never rode a venture before doing this upgrade. The one very big improvement is that the bike does not look like it will fall over when the side stand is down now and I can easily put it on the center stand now. Before I put the springs in I could lock the front brake and bottom out the springs I can not do that now. Harbor Freight has a set of sockets that has all the allens that you need for doing the seals and it does have the 17mm in the kit the cost is about $15
  15. Anyone know where to get a set of after market fork boots for a 93 Venture?
  16. Ok after ordering a set of hottie booties and haveing some probs. And multiple call to Russell( thanks by the way for taking my calls on your vacation) , it seems that My bike is haveing a bit of a prob. I have a 91 vr and it seems that the froks are compressing too much with my weight on the bike. I know Im a big boy and all but I would like to figure out what is going on. So now for the request. I am 250 lbs so if any of you first gen riders out there can give me some measurements I would appreciate it. What I kneed is the length of the fork tube from the dust seal to the triple tree in both static weight and loaded passenger weight. First weight is with the bike on the side stand and no rider and second weight is with the rider on the bike and setting it up off the side stand. Any help would be appreciated as I really dont want to have to have these forks rebuilt . I would have to have someone else do it as Im not much of a mechannic. Also run my front class setup at medium both fromt and back so if you could set your class the same I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance. David
  17. How long should fork seals last? I thought I had them licked on my blue bike from back early in the '08 season, or perhaps it was '07. On the way home from work this evening though, I noticed that my port side fork is leaking again big time. I also changed the bushings when I last did the seals and I only used genuine Yama parts. They have both been clean as a whistle ever since, up to today. Would gators help, or do they just mask the problems? Brian H.
  18. Got my new progressive springs today, so tore into the job. One side is done, the other....A &$@# PO must have done something at one point, the Fork Spring Cap is completely rounded out.....Anybody got a trick of the trade on how to get this B*#@* out? Greatly appreciated.
  19. Need to know the right way to change fork oil in my 86 venture ,what oil to use and how much ? Thanks.denny
  20. Is the top and bottom bearings the same on the fork head on a 83. Had to cut the bottom bearing off. This must of been my problem with the steering not going striaght. Also sould there be a seal on the bottom. Had someone come over to trade bikes. He basicly told me my bike was not worth anything.he had a 99 suzuki 500 and wanted me to give him 1500 plus my venture. thanks Doug
  21. Finally put the polished fork deflectors on the bike the other day, thanks Ruffy! They look(ed) great. Took the bike out for a ride around the block or two for the first time of the year, to see how things were running. Kept hearing a metallic rattle/clang when I hit larger bumps, particularly going over curb to/from driveway. I determined it was the fork deflectors banging against my chrome front fender rail. Upon further inspection, I noticed what you see in the photo, the lower part of the fork cover is dented, from bottoming out on the fender rail attachment point. Sooo, I quickly removed the fork deflectors, a bit scratched now! I then purchased a progressive air pump and took forks from 0 to 5 lbs each. I haven't put the fork deflectors back on yet. My bike is lowered (forks raised) about 1 1/4", which raises the fork into the fork covers by that much. Guessing that's what caused this? Soooo, I'm thinking I might want to raise it a bit, to maybe 3/4" total. Also attached a photo with the "new" seat (thanks Godlover). Thoughts anyone? Rode in today, beautiful day, no problems.
  22. I went to put new oil seals in my 86 last night, and it seems the PO, or his mech had left out a few parts when they were last worked on...AAARGH! the shop manual names them spring seat, and guide. funny shaped washer and tube piece at the top of the forks. i test rode it before i knew these were missing and it didnt seem bad, but id like to find the parts, the guide does not show available from dealers and junk yards only want to sell whole fork set ups. Any one have extra parts lyin around theyd be willing to sell?
  23. I am experiencing some vibration in the front wheel at high speeds (over 80) I have been told that is due to deflection in the forks. So, I am considering this fork brace (http://www.americanmotorcycleaccessories.com/proddetail.asp?prod=AMA1100) does anyone know how difficult they are to install? Thanks
  24. Just in case anybody missed it in the General Tech Talk area, Dingy is now taking orders for his fork wrench. It looks to have turned out very nice and I consider it a essential addition to your tool box. You really should check it out. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?p=434977#post434977
  25. Since I am getting my new scoot next week, I am tossing around the idea of letting the 1st Gen go. A friend made me a REALLY good deal when I bought the 1st Gen, and I would like to pay it forward to someone who doesn't have much money to buy one, or has lost their scoot because of hard times. The scoot doesn't look quite as good as it does in my profile pic, but those here who have seen it can attest to the fact that it is still a pretty good looking scoot. I can supply recent pics upon request. Here are the details: '83 standard am/fm/cd player with upgraded speakers Luggage rack Trailer hitch Passenger floorboards Dunlop Elite 3s with 6k on them(LOTS of tread left) Replaced all of the brakes last spring when I got the tires. Battery is about 3 weeks old, with one year replacement warranty. Overall good condition, and I can get on it and ride it anywhere...if it would just warm up, lol. The bad: needs 2nd gear fix. Never bothered me much. I just usually skip 2nd. Fork seals leak. Could use fork rebuild and progressive springs. The scoot runs really well, and although not great, is in pretty good shape. I ride it to work(80 miles round trip) whenever the weather lets me. Last time was 2 weeks ago. I am willing to let it go for $1000. Does that sound like a fair price? I don't need it anymore, and I thought maybe I could help someone else out, rather than let it sit. If interested, let me know.
