  1. One of the screw holes used for securing the top cover on my clutch master cylinder is stripped. The screw is fine. Its the hole that is boogered. I currently have a slightly longer screw in there which did bite but I am not happy with it. Has anyone tried repairing the hole with a heli-coil or Does any one have a master cylinder that I can buy? Thanks, Ray
  2. Lost my clutch shifting into third yesterday got lucky and road it home in second ( about 2 miles) I beleive it' the SLAVE CYLINDER only becuse I can't find any leaks all lines seem good . I is there any where on this site that has Pictures so that I know what to look for when I pull the cylinder It's only $20 for spring and new seals so I figured I would do that first and go from there I did bleed it but got just enough clutch to get into neutral so I could push it into garage. ANY advice comments etc... would be greatly appreciated. Oh 1999 Venture and it was going bad the other day and I bled it and got about 150 miles and this happened.
  3. Well i decided to take one of my 2 new bikes out for a good long test ride today. Went over 200 miles and the bike ran flawlessly, minus the rear master cylinder seizing up and almost burning out my back brake. Only got 34 mpg though.
  4. I am currently in the market for a rear master cylinder or a rebuild kit. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
  5. Well, I think it's time I address the slipping clutch. If I ride the bike normally the clutch does not slip at all. If I dump clutch it or rev it up to 6500 and speed shift you can feel it slipping. I don't want to race the bike but I don't want to have the clutch slip if I am in a situation where it would prove bad. Is there anything I should be looking for outside of the clutch (i.e. worn slave cylinder or faulty master cylinder)?
  6. What are the thoughts on using a front brake line set up off of an RSV for the front brakes on a 1st Gen. (1983) It seems like it will work to me, but I would like to hear from the voices of experience out there. I got a set from Pinwall cycle for $18.00 shipped and it looks like it will fit. This came off of a 2000 RSV. If nothing else, lines are 17 years newer than my 83 has on it. Pictures below. Last picture is of one caliper ends and the master cylinder end. I will need to fabricate a bracket to mount the coupling unit. The hose lengths look OK The angle of the master cylinder fitting is off some what. That may create a minor problem where the cover goes on under the handle bar riser. This is not a show stopper though. The caliper angles on hoses appear to be workable. The front brake lines are one of the few things I don't have off of the bike at this point. I have not measured I.D. of the ends of the hoses to check for a match yet. Is there any thing inside the center coupler unit or is it just straight piping? One the rear master cylinder, can I just block off the port that the line to the front comes out of, or is it more involved ? Gary
  7. The other day I ran into a guy that needed to sell a 1983 venture that his father in law had sent down to him from PA. he didn't want it because they were getting ready to move. timing is a great thing, I picked this bike up for $1000 and it only had 24000 actual miles on it, garage stored the whole time not even a scratch. the carbs were gummed up, I went through them, checked the compression it was good 130psi on each cylinder, good spark but still runs like it is only running on half the cylinders. sluggish week. if any one has any suggestions on what to check for nest, PLEASE tell. and Thank You for all for the great website. Steve
  8. 89 VR 27000m I notice myself tending to cruise in 4th, at 55mph, at 3500 rpm. Is that typical? I ask because the bike is new to me and I'm trying to figure out if it is performing as it should. I do 65 in 5th at about the same rpm. When I bought the bike it was missing on one cylinder according to my mechanic. I'm hoping I don't have to pull the carbs - it hadn't been ridden enough for about a year. I'm on my 3rd tank with Seafoam, and I seem to be on all four with an occasional miss though it is hard for me to tell. The pinging in higher gears is gone. Any diagnostic tribal lore appreciated. My brother laughed at me when I told him I was practicing different drum beat patterns so I could recognize the difference between a 4 cylinder that was hitting all four and one missing. Guess it is a bit weird. t
  9. I have a ring problem with my 83 xvz12. Starting new thread on this. I put #2 cylinder at TDC and pressurized ( 5 to10 PSI) on that cylinder and could hear the air at the oil filler spout. Rechecked the compression on all cylinders and had 180psi on #1 , 80psi on #2, 150psi on #3 and 110psi on #4. By the time I buy new rings, gaskets, rework heads, check valve adjustment, etc.. It looks like I might be better to purchase used engine off Ebay and change out. I've spent too much time and hours on this bike to give up. The mechanic I had look at it recommended just keep riding it. It starts OK but when idleing will stumble several times and die and when under 3000RPM accelerating the engine belches several times. I've already replace plugs, wires and caps, new aftermarket TCI, replaced battery cables, repair brakes, new Deka battery, etc. Looking for some advice or really good deal on engine.
  10. Broke my master cylinder clutch... no no not where it would be easy to fix by getting a new lever and installing... The lever broke off WITH part of the master cylinder clutch... aka master cylinder 2 ala BikeBandit and WHEEW is it Expensive... umm so anyone have a spare laying around that doesnt cost almost 300 or know if a welder can fix that piece? Im looked at pinwheel and ebay as well... ALSO if anyone knows what years will fit or if a road star master clutch would work? Thanks all in advance...
  11. My gas mileage dropped by about 10 mpg. I checked and my left back cylinder wasn't heating up the pipe so I removed the plug and it was fouled I replaced with new plug but pipe still does not heat up So cylinder is still not firing. I can do some repairs but am not sure on what is the best way to trace this problem. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated. dale
  12. I've got the rebuild kit...anyone rebuilt a clutch master cylinder? I have to rebuild my 96 royal star clutch master cylinder...just looking for any helpful hints to get the job done! Thanks gunk:shock3:
  13. I'm thinking of delinking the brakes on my '83 Venture and I got questions. I know it would be best to replace the master cylinder to handle the extra volume of the second front caliper, but money is tight. Can it be done using the stock master cylinder. What would the disadvantages of using the stock master cylinder. I imagine I would need to apply more pressure on the lever, but I think can live with that. The main reason I want to delink is I have floorboards on the bike and to operate the brake peddle I need to pick my foot up off the floorboard and step on the peddle. I don't feel comfortable with this setup. I am also use to riding bikes without linked brakes. I am considering replacing the floorboards with OE pegs, but that is currently not in the budget.
  14. Hi All: Haven't been around much, working too much o/t and having to get the house ready really sucked. I need a new master cylinder for the clutch on my 96 royal star. It's pooched. Would anyone have one around that they'd like to part with? Pinwall only has one, and somebody wants it a lot worse than I do, the bidding is up over $100 for it already. If you have one available, or know where I can get a rebuild kit, I'd appreciate hearing from you. The old royal star is sold, and I have my 04 midnite venture on the block as well...it appears that we are getting out of biking and heading sailing. Retirement is about 10 years away...and we'd like to do it on a sailboat somewhere warm...like the Caribbean. More to follow on that. Thanks, and hi to all that Beth and I know! gunk:shock3:
  15. What do you do with old Bumper Cars? WHO KNEW? Yes, you read that right; these little beasties are street legal. They run on either Kawasaki or Honda motorcycle engines and co-opt vintage bumper car bodies into the most awesome form of mini-car we've seen in a long time. There are seven of these little monsters floating around California, and they're all the creation of one man, Tom Wright, a builder in the outskirts of San Diego who figured the leftovers of the Long Beach Pike amusement park needed a more dignified end than the trash heap. They were originally powered by two cylinder Harley Davidson Motorcycle engines but they rattled like heck because of the two cylinder vibration. Tom replaces them with four cylinder Honda or Kawasaki 750's, and a couple have been measured as capable of 160 MPH (which is terrifyingly fast in machines with such a short wheelbase).
  16. I have a 2005 RSTD with Khromewerks exhaust, K&M air filters, and no other modifications. Over the past week or so I have had the following problem: When the bike sits overnight or cools down for several hours it starts but only runs on 3 cylinders until I rev the engine a few times then I can actually hear a change in the pitch of the exhaust and the other cylinder fires up. I have installed new plugs (rear only) yesterday and it still have the problem. I'm pretty sure it's getting gas because if I let it idle I can smell gas. I know its only running on 3 cylinders because I do the "touch test" on the headers. The cylinder affected is (as your sitting on the bike) the back right cylinder. After I rev the motor a few times the header gets hot like the others. It runs normally the rest of the time, it's only when it cools off that I have the issue. Using the choke doesn't really make a difference.
  17. Just in case anybody is looking for a D.I.Y. 4 cylinder carburetor synchronizer, I made one the other day and it worked great. I filled it with some trans fluid and it was VERY sensitive and worked great. I put some pics of it in my gallery. The pics might be enough to tell ya how I did it. But if you have any questions, I can give ya all the details.
  18. The Problem... My 07 RSV ran good (not great) most days, until a 100 to 150 mile break/rest, after the 15 to 30 min. break the bike seemed sluggish and sometimes similar to a dead cylinder. Sometimes if the ride was early morning, a damp day or late evening, the problem seemed to self heal. Having a somewhat mechanical background and reading all the posts, I flushed the carbs, did Sea Foam and a carb sync, but the problem remained the same and seemed linked to heat and humidity. The problem was very similar to a coil breaking down and I almost stopped by the dealer to purchase a coil. I did a search on coils and found the post by V 7 Goose listed below. http://venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=41216&highlight=coil Following "Gooses" instructions I found #3 cylinder plug cap with a resistance of 13k and the brass disc being black (not green or corroded) with the spring shinny as new, # 1,2 and 4 cylinder caps were like new. I cleaned the black disc and applied Di -Electric Grease to all contact areas of springs, discs, resistors and screws of all 4 caps. All had a resistance of 8-9k after cleaning and grease. 400 Miles later.........Again...."Thanks Goose" "The problem Is Gone" "The Bike Is Like New" "Great site with knowledgeable members " $12.00 per year..........How much for a coil??????
  19. Does anyone have a supplier and part information for purchasing the just the rubber seals/washers on the piston in a 83 rear master brake cylinder, rather than buying a complete rebuild kit? Parts should be only a dollar or two. Does anyone have feedback on my cheapskate idea?
  20. I hate to ask this question, but what is the order of my cylinders on a 04 RSV. I'm working on the carburetors and want to make sure the main jets are in the right location. I have found post explaining the main jets are different, but they refer to cylinder 1, 2, 3, 4. Which cylinder is 1 and 2 and 3 and 4. I have been searching and can't find the answer, so I thought I would ask. Thanks.
  21. So as it says I broke my rear master cylinder resevoir just like cja jacobs did. Does anyone know where I can get one or even better does anyone have one? I am just getting into riding and have only had the bike a couple of months, but right as I get my license it breaks. Thanks for the help.
  22. A beautiful afternoon, uncovered my VR all set to ride it to work ..........and what do I get but a dead cylinder. So now I get to work on my bike instead of riding it.
  23. I just picked up a '96 Royal Star with only 19k on it, bike is in great shape except for one thing... I have a pop through the exhaust. I suspected a lean cylinder and was right (on part of it) so off with the carbs for a thurough cleaning. I installed them back on yesterday and dialed everything in, huge difference in performance... but still had the pop. At idle its a rythmic; Pop.... Pop.... Pop.... Pop.... but goes away when revved and comes back again if the rpm is held constant. So today I checked that cylinders carb for any leaks or possible cause for this issue, nothing found. Plenty of fuel there. I went ahead and did a compression test on both right side cylinders and they seem low to me, or at least what the manual says they should be. Cylinder compression test shows 110psi on the front right and 125 on the rear right. Spark plug was wet on the front so I dried the cylinder out and cleaned the plug... same pop and same compression reading. After this I ran a leakdown test and im just a bit over 20% loss coming out of the exhaust valves! This afternoon I'll pop the valve cover and check the valve clearance but im afraid the damage has been done and the adjustment won't help. My question is, what is a normal compression reading for these engines? And can the heads come off without pulling the engine? Thanks for any help,
  24. I need to remove one of the coolant joints in the cylinder head, because it is leaking and the O-rings have to be replaced. The joint is held in by a spring pin, and access is very tight. The part itself is plastic and doesn't seem to want to move. Before I resort to breaking this part out, with all the risk that entails, does anyone have a method of removing this that has worked for them? Thanks.
  25. Pulled the 96 out of the shed today, it's been there since late October. NO fluids whatsoever in the resevoir. Added Dot 3, bled, added, bled added, no pressure at all in the clutch. No noticeable leaks anywhere. Pulled the side cover, pulled off the "slave cylinder" and had a heck of time to get it to move. Finally freed it up. Pulled it apart, can feel a ridge inside about 10 thou....have it all apart still. Comments? New slave cylinder required? Best place to buy? What a spot to get at! Sure glad my son can wrench, and more importantly...SEE! This getting old crap...and owning two bikes is a wee bit challenging at times. Thanks gunk:shock3:
