  1. OK folks, I got home late last night and barely had time to play with the new Zumo 550 before going to bed. This morning I stuck it in my work car so that I could try it out a bit today. Now, my work car is a 2008 Dodge Caravan. It has an AM/FM/CD unit with RCA type inputs on the front for auxiliary in. I use it all the time with my Sirius radio with a 1/8" stereo to dual RCA plugs to run from the Sirius unit to the car's stereo. The way it works is that when you plug an audio source into the aux input jacks on the stereo, it automatically switches to aux. I simply unplugged the stereo plug from the Sirius and plugged it into the audio out jack of the Garmin car mount. It worked great at first but then it started losing the aux in signal. There is an indicator on the stereo that says "Aux" when something is plugged in. If it is on aux though and there is no input signal, the display says "No Aux Found". It will show "Aux" and work fine for a few minutes and then "No Aux Found" for a few minutes and during those times there is no MP3 nor navigation prompts heard from the Garmin. Also, I notice that if I press the pause button on the Garmin MP3 player, I also lost navigation prompts as long as the MP3 is paused. I'm thinking that all of this has something to do with the way the aux input works on my cars stereo but was wondering if any of you have run into a similar problem. The only way I can double check it would be to get it installed on the bike and go for a VERY cold ride.

  3. Thanks Goodness Well I boo-booed again and I am very sorry. Today we went for ride, actually heading down to Carl's with Rhonda, my mother in law, sister on law and 4 yr old niece. The fog was horrible, and we never made it. The fog was so bad at times it was tough to see the end of the hood. As I was driving south I was looking for the stop sign as I was familiar with the road, and by the time I saw the sign it was too late, car would not stop, and I entered the intersection. We collided with the another car. Our right front corner hit the left front of his car, and he ended up in a ditch which dropped about 5 feet, and I was spun around. Rhonda, my mother in law and myself were all put in ambulances and sent to the hospital for xrays. Rhonda hit her head on the side window and has a good goose egg on her head also pretty sore in the chest. Her sister also banged her head, not that bad but is also sore. Rhonda's mom has a sprained wrist, and some muscle aches as she is 70 yrs old, but you would never know it. I have a cracked rib and some sore muscles. MY niece got a nice teddy bear from the fireman and she is fine. Even the 4 people in the other car are okay. Thanks to Brick (Darryl and Rhonda) for coming to get us at the hospital and getting to the accident scene quickly to remove some of our valuables. And I am very glad no one was seriously hurt. Pics of my car attached and this is the one I got only 3 months ago and have managed over 12,000 km on it, dam I liked that car. Also one pic of the car we hit. BRad PS: And Swifty when offering my wife a place to stay safe, do you think she deserves more than the cot. Oh yah another bloody ticket for running a stop sign.
  4. I saw you hug your purse closer to you in the grocery store line. But you didn't see me put an extra $10.00 in the collection plate last Sunday. I saw you pull your child closer when we passed each other on the sidewalk. But you didn't see me playing Santa at the local Mall. I saw you change your mind about going into the restaurant when you saw my bike parked out front.. But you didn't see me attending a meeting to raise more money for the hurricane relief. I saw you roll up your window and shake your head when I rode by. But you didn't see me riding behind you when you flicked your cigarette butt out the car window. I saw you frown at me when I smiled at your children. But you didn't see me, when I took time off from work to run toys to the homeless. I saw you stare at my long hair. But you didn't see me and my friends cut ten inches off for Locks of Love. I saw you roll your eyes at our Leather jackets and gloves. But you didn't see me and my brothers donate our old ones to those that had none. I saw you look in fright at my tattoos. But you didn't see me cry as my children where born or passed away & have their name written over and in my heart. I saw you change lanes while rushing off to go somewhere. But you didn't see me going home to be with my family.. I saw you complain about how loud and noisy our bikes can be. But you didn't see me when you were changing the CD and drifted into my lane. I saw you yelling at your kids in the car. But you didn't see me pat my child's hands knowing she was safe behind me. I saw you reading the newspaper or map as you drove down the road.. But you didn't see me squeeze my wife's leg when she told me to take the next turn. I saw you race down the road in the rain. But you didn't see me get soaked to the skin so my son could have the car to go on his date. I saw you run the yellow light just to save a few minutes of time. But you didn't see me trying to turn right. I saw you cut me off because you needed to be in the lane I was in. But you didn't see me leave the road. I saw you, waiting impatiently for my friends to pass. But you didn't see me. I wasn't there. I saw you go home to your family. But you didn't see me. Because I died that day you cut me off. I was just a biker. A person with friends and a family. But you didn't see me. 5. GeorgeS and I were discussing my current and reoccuring draggin starter problem. He mentioned that he remembered someone posting that they had used a solenoid from a small foriegn car to replace the oem solenoid that comes on the 1st Gens. But, he did not remember the details of which car the starter came off of. The problem is that the stock solenoids don't seem to hold up very well and the cost of new replacements from yamaha run close to $80.00. Using the car solenoids was considerably cheaper with a heavier duty solenoid. The question is does anyone remember the name of the post or by who the post was made that had the details of this solenoid mod?
  6. I have a 2005 RSTD with 18,500 miles on it. I maintain it meticulously. How many miles can I expect it to live? I am thinking it should be like a car and go for WELL over 100,000 miles. What do you think?
  7. The other day I took a nice ride. Came upon a cross road behind two cars. Both of them with left hand turn signals on and over to the center line. Pretty good indication of a left hand turn, right? No, wrong. That meant right hand turn. I went to go around on the right hand side - suddenly the back car begins to turn right. Relying on my lightening fast reflexes, and the legendary crotch rocket like acceleration of a 1st gen, I did a light twist with my right wrist and presto, zoomed out of the danger zone. Moral of the story - stick to your own safety rules. I have preached it over and over. Just because a left hand signal is on doesn't mean a thing. Even if the car is stopped, wheels turned left, car nearly over the center line waiting to turn left - depend on it. They will turn right.
  8. Just drove from Pennsylvania to Conway, South Carolina to help my daughter. She was involved in an accident on 501, near Coastal Carolina University where she attends school. Met with her as she was leaving the hospital with a broken hand, bruising, and light air bag burns. She is very lucky! The car on the other hand is totaled. I will be meeting with the insurance adjuster sometime Monday, hopefully early in the morning. Any forum members in S.C. know a good ,honest, dealer for a used car in the nearby area? Regards Dave
  9. One of my friends, who owns a tire dealership, has suggested that use the truing machine to round the edges of the car tire. He is going to trim 5/32 of tread from the edge and round 1/4 of the way toward the center. This will leave a flat area in the center and give the edges a round profile. He is convinced this will remove the cornering feeling many talk about. Will get this done sometime this week. Cruise On Gregg

  11. I am looking to put a car tire on the back of my 87 Venture. Can someone point me in the right direction of someone that has done this? I need to know what tire will work. My intentions are to stud the tire and ride the bike this winter. On the Motorcycle Tourer’s Forum I have seen a rider from Alaskan do this with his Gold Wing. I am still trying to get in touch with him. Cody
  12. .........your sitting on the throne in the bathroom thinking about the ride you had today, you lean into the corner your thinking about and hit your head on the sink. .........you come to a stop and open the door and put your foot down. .........you have turned on the wipers, the turn signals and hit the horn trying to find the clutch and hand brake. ...........you start ducking all those big bugs hitting the windshield OR your hanging your head out the window trying to catch lunch! ..........you strap you tank bag on the hood of the car. .........you strap your saddle bags to the trunk of the car. . .........you just tried to split lanes between two very large trucks (ie. Cali ). .........you are driving with all your riding gear on. I'm sure you folks could come up with a few. KURT

  14. Had a good time even though my stay was short. If there was going to be a long distance award, who would have won? Ramblinman or GaryN? Below is a link of pics that I took with my phone. Not great but not bad either. Each image and the entire album is downloadable, take what you want. http://gallery.me.com/rturton#100068 Oh, there is one car pic. There was a Lincoln car show there also. There is a pic of a '56 Lincoln that I took at 11pm with no flash so it is kinda grainy.
  15. Well...I know that many of you have been through this already but today I take my 16 year old son to get his driver's license. I have been online getting insurance quotes to add him to my policy. Needless to say, my insurance is going UP UP UP. From what I can see so far, it will triple now with him on the policy. I'm talking about the car of course, not the bike.
  16. Yesterday about 11:30 while going west on I-10 thru Houston I saw someone with a Midnight RSV on a trailer. The car towing it had Alabama plates. Any one of us??? Don H.

  18. Geez, almost got taken out twice today! Incident #1 - I was riding in the right lane of a four lane divided highway. Coming the other direction was a funeral procession. The lead car in our group in the left lane figured they had to stop. The car right behind couldn't brake quick enough so they swerved into my lane causing me to go onto the shoulder to avoid getting hit. Incident #2 - Minutes later, I rolled into town and was following a car. A school bus was coming the other way and stopped at a railroad crossing. They always stop and turn on their lights before crossing the tracks. For some reason, the car in front of me slammed on their brakes and stopped as well. I had to swerve around the car to avoid rear ending it. Lucky I had left enough room to do this. Needless to say, I feel pretty lucky. Be careful out there.
  19. Here's a few pics of the car on the bike. I'm in one of the pics went for a short trip in it. Didn't really like the ride he said he has more to do, so I told him he should have waited to take me for a ride. Anyway the first dog in the car is our youngest Bernie she didn't want to stay in the car and jumped out. The other dog is our old girl and she went for a really short trip out one driveway and in the other. But she seems to have liked it. Hope he gets it all fixed maybe I'll give it another try then. Margaret
  20. As a serious CT prospect, I encountered this on Dunlop's website. I was actually looking for real tech info for a friends question why he could not run "front" tire on rear and vice versa. So, do any of your guys have the equipment and a spare rim to actually measure a 15" motorcycle rim and a 15" car rim and report? I think equipment to measure thousandth would be in order. Here is the quote from Dunlop's site: For 15-inch motorcycle replacement tires, never mount on a 15-inch diameter passenger car tire rim. Mount only on a 15 M/C motorcycle rim. These passenger car and motorcycle rims actually differ in diameter. This statement is on this page: http://www.dunlopmotorcycle.com/infocenter_tiretips.asp?id=27#tip
  21. My friend who own a tire shop, has an idea which we are going to try. He believes that by using the truing machine to round the edges on a car tire that it will solve the cornering issues. he intends to cut 5/32 of the edge and round toward the center. will keep yall posted. Sorry posted in wrong area, someone moved it for after I changed it, read the next one up. Please read the other post with the same title. Cruise On Gregg:fingers-crossed-emo
  22. I am new to this site and learning to navagate it. I was wondering if the car tire would affect the gas mileage on the venture. I have a 2000 Venture and have ordered a federal 165/80/15 for the rear. This is my daily rider because of its great gas mileage, to and from work, so I am curious if anyone has noticed in change in their mileage after mounting a ct on the venture. I also own a 1997 valkyrie with a 205/60/16 on it and the ct did drop it mileage a couple of miles per tank, it only gets 27 mpg anyway. guess you can't have gut wrenching power and fuel economy together. I would also like to say that all this concern about the twisties, my valk is far more sure footed with the ct. I have to be careful not to tear the pegs off in sharp curves. I had to get use to it but now there is no way I would put a mc tire back on the rear. Thanks for allowing on your site. Gregg Freedom of the road for all.
  23. So I was on Highway 401 today (in the car) and it was pouring, and I was passing a transport, and those tires were spraying so much that you could not see anything not even the road, for the whole length of the truck and trailer. SO THE QUESTION IS. If you were on the bike DO you pass quickly ? Drop back and hope he pulls off ? OR What would you do ??? Rhonda and I were discussing this and not sure what I would have done, as it was bad enough in the car. MOst likely I would have backed away, but I would have hated to follow that Truck. BRad
  24. Finally some good news to report. After living in an apartment for almost 2 years, this kid is getting back into the home ownership business. I recently found a 2189 sq ft split-level with 4 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, living room, dining room, kitchen, and family room for a resonable price for my youngest boy and myself. It has 0.4 acres of land (plenty for adding a pool in the spring) and a 2 car garage that seems to be big enough to put the car, truck, & bike inside during the winter. Financing in going to be through the VA and the rates are finally looking a bit competitive against conventional loans. Closing will be Nov 25 and possesion will be the first of December. My son was very excited, until he seen the yard that has to be cut. His first order of business is getting a puppy come spring time.
  25. Regretably my bike is in the shop, but everytime I get on this thing I can hear myself at a young age saying faster daddy whhile he was pushing the family car hard through the twisties. Inevitably we would have to slow down becouse I would hear my dad say now son you know these curves make your mom sick. Now some 30 years later here I am listening to the two angels talking over my shoulder saying faster dady faster. Only this time I'm the adult and I'm on a bike and not the family car. My only response is now kids, you know your mom is behind us on her bike and she's not ready to go faster in the twisties yet. Now don't get me wrong. I have full knoledge that my kids are in heaven but every now and then I can still hear them. Aint life grand. This goes out to my father, Faster dady faster.I can't be up there yet so maybe you can take them faster, only this time your family car has wings and no wheels. Love to all of you up there. David
