  1. Thaks in advance for any info. you can give me on this problem.. MY 86 Venture developed a bad TCI box last year.. Bought one on Ebay and it worked fine until just the other day. I lost spark to the front cylinder and hooked my old TCI up and had spark - so I knew it was the box. Then had a family member who is an elect. tech replace diodes and resolder everything, etc. I put that reapired box on the bike and had spark all the way around and it ran fine - FOR ONE DAY! Again - i lost spark to that front cyl. He again repaired it and I now have spark to all four cylinders but have developed a "bogging down" when applying more than a couple thousand rpm's of throttle. It sits and idles fine but when applying throttle, it backfires a little and boggs down. Is it just a bad TCI or did I mess up and unhook something under the airbox that is causing this or ??? Again - thanks if anyone can help.. jkit02@yahoo.com
  2. Good day. I've been getting more and more paranoid about my TCI lately. I didn't even know it could be a problem until I started reading threads about it. After studying these two threads; http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=40414 http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=43357 ...and getting some good advice, (Special thanks to Dingy and Timgray), I decided I should look inside the damned box to see what's what. Before getting into the job, I ran the bike and checked each exhaust pipe with a temperature probe to verify that all four cylinders were firing...and, good news, they were. To get the TCI apart, there are 4 phillips screws on the back cover, and 5 on the back of the board. Now here's the tricky part about getting the board out of the box; the proper way is to desolder the 14 wires from the board which lead to the connectors. I'm ok with a soldering iron but no wizard, and that board has been banged around for 25ish years and I don't know how much more abuse it could take. So I decided to try something different. I used a hacksaw and cut the box around the connectors. It was a pretty easy job and it was no problem cutting only the box and not damaging the board. That bit worked for me. If you choose to do any of this, by the way, you do so at your own risk. Anyway, the attached pics show what I found on the inside. At least 3 diodes, (the blue and tan bulbous units), were showing signs of serious disintegration. HOLY CRAPPOLA...! That sure gave me a bit of a fright. It made me thankful I tackled this bloody awful bit of mechanicking. I refused to pull the fairing off so I yanked the battery, battery box, air cleaner and air box. I also took off the lower right side fairing. This allowed me access to the TCI. I could reach the screws but they were bloody seized. Eventually, I got the left one out. The right one wouldn't budge so I just cut the tab off the box. I wasn't planning on putting the box back in its original spot so I didn't worry about it. Dingy suggested replacing the crap diodes with 1N4001 or higher diodes, so that was my quest for Sunday. The Source, by Circuit City, (formerly Radio Shack in Canada), had an assortment pack with about 20 diodes and as it turned out 10 of them happened to be of the 1N4001 variety. Less than 6 bucks later, I was off to tackle the bike. I won't go into what a frickin' pain it was to fart around inside that bike...I will just say that the cuss words are probably still echoing around that garage. Anyway, I took my time with the desoldering and soldering...(even though it may not look like it). After replacing all 8 diodes, I checked continuity with an ohm meter. One direction would show 600 ohms and the other would show nothing...perfect. I also checked continuity further down the board to make sure my soldering job actually fused to the traces. I had a couple of traces lift while soldering so that took some extra time to resolve. All of the testing seemed to indicate all was well so it was time to try it on the bike. After plugging the TCI and the rest of the bits back on the bike...SHOWTIME...! One stab of the starter and she lit right up. Fantastic. I let it run for a while and used a temp probe to verify that all cylinders were firing...which they were. I haven't taken it on the road yet...it's 4 am and I lost the will to reassemble the rest of the bike and tuck away the TCI. After much soul searching...the TCI will probably go back in its original spot...but held there with zip ties instead of those damed screws. I plan to silicone up the frankenstein-ish scar I hacked into the box, then, once I'm sure the thing is running right, seal the thing up in a bag with some desiccant. Anyway, so far, so good. I definitely feel relieved that I went through the effort. The paranoia was getting to me. Now, I feel confident that my potential TCI worries are probably in the past. One bit of extra advice; desoldering and soldering these bits can screw up your board. The diodes cost me less than 6 bucks. It would take a good electronics tech less than a half hour to do this job...an hour if he's drunk. If you aren't totally confident in your soldering abilities, take the job to a tech. It'll save you from screwing up an otherwise good TCI. Ok...it's 5am...I'll take the thing out on the road tomorrow, see how it runs and report back.
  3. Looking for a set of 2nd gen air cleaner/box covers that you may have laying around for a possible project. Dont need the whole air box, just the outside covers. Thanks
  4. he just wanted me to say he is staring to box them cassette tapes up. after all the clean up of his aunts apartment the total of tapes went over 400? therefore he said thoes that requested some will now be getting 20 or more per box. he just dont have the room for them. plus with the cd split every one got 175 cd,s his 3 sisters and him. so he,s keeping the cd,s and about 75 tapes so last call for tapes all country. old and fairly new. they got to go. we tested over 100 of them all play great some still wrapped in plastic never played. and with his small apartment and his health he can do so much cleaning so like he said they have to go.
  5. - I'm making saw dust and I've got a vent fan in the window, a 21" box fan on the floor and it's still hotter than a fffiaf -
  6. Was doing some odds and end things this past weekend and took my air filter box off--After I got it out of the small compartment it is lodged in I noticed someone had taken a 1/4 in. drill bit and drilled about 8 small holes on the sides of the box (all 4 sides)---Do you think this would improve performance or just some "Shade tree Mechanic" trying to increase the air into the carbs?...........................................Thanx......................Larry
  7. Hi every one have not being on this site for a while got my self a classic CZ 1948 Perak (feather) Model 11 and trying to find info and parts for it.I am at 90,000 km full services vale shims, carb sink, greasing, plus more but when I pull the air induction box off and found oil in the left side and oil water muck in the left and right sides were could this oil and water be coming from.
  8. Hello I am back, on my 88vr I am still having idleing problem when you first start it and when it reaches operating temp. It will idle for a second and then the tack will drop to 0 the engine will still idle but it very low and it will start backfireing thru the tail pipe. when you throttle up it will pop a little and then smooth out when you let go of the throttle it will drop back to 1000 rpm for a second and then drop to 0 and start backfiring. Squeese told me to check for vac. leak around base of carb. I checked this with brake cleaner srayed around each one but it seemed ok no rev. The hoses from the top of the carbs into the air box two of them are a little loose where they go into the box should I seal them will they cause any problem? running down the highway it runs fine. I checked the diaphrams in all 4 carbs no holes they looked new. I have only had the bike for 3 weeks when I first got it, it idled fine iI ran sea foam thru it when I first got it. when I pulled the cover to check the diph. it looked like ther was some oil on the diphrams. I think theres to much oil in it on the sight glass it is all the way to the top is it suppose to be that full? Its been about20 years since i have had A bike I have to learn how to work on them agine. can anyone tell me where I can order a service Manual for this bike. I will be asking a lot of question on here I hope you all dont get tired of me. thanks alot motorhead 704
  9. Is an '83 TCI box the only box you can use on an '83 VR? Without going to an after-market.
  10. I got a little free time so far in the morning. Anybody know a easy way to line that air box up when you get the horns that sit on the carbs out of whack?? I've aleays had a hard time with those things anyway. Maybe take all 4 boots or horns whatever you call them out of the box put them on carbs and then mount box to them? I just don't want to waste all the free time I have in the morning fighting it. Could get some more of it togather. I have someone to watch Warden in the morning. Not going to chance leaving her by herself without a watch dog!! I will only be outside but I know her. Those Air Boxes always give me fits. Got to be a easy way. I'll be on it as soon as it gets light enough to see down in there.
  11. Is there such a thing, that puts lights for the brakes/marker in the top box (travel box) ala Goldwing? Also is there a current seat-nut link, I found one in threads that was dead. Thanks
  12. Anybody interested in 2 Chatter box communication systems? Model HJC-80 Selling them for a friend he doesn't know what there worth. He is looking to get $50.00 for the pair or B.O. Whats a fair price?? Bubber
  13. Screws that hold TCI in place. I used #2 Phillips this morning and it slipped on first try and I quit right there. Don't remember having any trouble with them before. Do the take a special Hong Kong bit?? Tip on valve covers. Do them when you have reason to remove Air box and battery box. Another question. How many put heat sheilds back?? I left them out most times I got in there.
  14. While test riding my 86 VR just after getting the new motor completely installed and all the bugs worked out, I was riding it without any of the plastic body parts, except the bags and the upper fairing, and the fuze box cover went a different direction than the rest of the bike. Didn't notice it was gone until I arrived back to my place. Just checked out Fleabay and nada. I don't believe one can buy this part separately from anyone. Soooo, does anyone on here have a fuze box cover they won't mind parting with. Just let me know and how much you will need for the item.
  15. I am installing a pair of Powerlets to my bike. The Powerlet comes with a very nice connector to go to the battery, along with an inline fuse. However, I have an auxiliary fuse box under my seat. To hook up the Powerlet, I'd have to cut off the nice professional ends, then add connectors to let it attach to the fuse box. I think I would also cut away the bulky inline fuse. What would you do? Go to the battery or go to the fuse box? Keep the inline fuse, or dump it? 16. Was checking out a box full of "stuff" I've had sittin around for who knows how long and finally sorted through it for a bit. To my surprise I found a complete coil/ignitor (cdi) assembly. Short of installing the cdi box, how would one bench check this thing to find out if it is good? In this very large box is all kinds of other stuff, including a complete motor off an 86 VR. If anyone needs something let me know and I'll see if what you might be looking for is in this box of goodies.
  17. I want to add an Accessory fuse block. I have searched the subject but can't find much info. I'm looking for what type of fuse box and relay I'll need and how to wire the relay. Thanks
  18. This Caveman has Skydoc_17's fuse box upgrade and needs help. I must be pre-caveman cause I missed something in the instructions or just not getting it. I think I have more going on at the top of the fusebox (see attached image) than in the instructions. I might have a noise suppressor and the battery mod plugged into one of the screws at the top. This is where I am stuck and do not know what to do.
  19. I have an 84 Venture and it has to go. New bike comming Friday Engine missing starter was a runner. Email me It's in Calgary. lots of parts fairing box of parts to vast to go through .It came with my Venture as a parts source. Don't call It's conditionally Gone Thanks Paul..
  20. I went and ordered the hitch for the scoot. I already did the thread on whether or not to use brakes on the trailer. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=47141 Now I just need to design and build the trailer. I need to a lot of pricing out parts to see if it is more cost effective to build a trailer from scratch, or to start with something like a Harbor Freight trailer and modify from there. The box needs to be a minimum of 96 x 40 x 20. At this point in time I am thinking of making the box out of marine grade plywood with a one piece hinged lid. Maybe a sloped and/or V nose to help wind resistance. I am still concerned about side wind load in a strong cross wind. That is a big trailer for a bike but what I need to carry is not heavy, just big and fragile. I am open to ideas for the construction of this beast.
  21. Well this is my first try at posting some pictures, I think I have uploaded the pictures and if I have you will see that I have a Uni-go single wheel trailer, works well and I have pulled it about 3K to date. We use to have just the one Border Terrier (Connor) and he rode on the back in a box or in the box on the luggage rack if Mary Ann was along. This worked great and drew a lot of looks and picture taking. We we got another Border Terrier (Piper) and the box was just to small and the luggage rack shouldn't have 40 lbs on it . Need, the mother of invention, Put a removable floor in the Uni-go and made the metal cage, added a little canvas work and there you have it. The dogs love it and now they both can go. Just got back from 6 weeks in Florida and they probably rode over a thousand miles in it, Just say "Motorcycle" and they jump in
  22. I have an '08 RSV with 15k miles. Changed coolant, new iridium plugs and did carb synch. I noticed some oil on the outside top of the left rear portion of the air box. I removed the air box and found oil inside the box and all around the air intake hose clamp and a coating over much of the outside of left carbs (mostly the rear one. It looks like it has built up over time and was sorta dried and just grimey). I checked the breather tubes but there didn't seem to be much of a residue inside. Also, the air box cross tube connector foam sealer pieces were saturated. Does anyone have an idea where this is coming from? I had a Roadstar before the RSV and oil from the CC Breather would run out of the air box. Routing the breather to under the bike took care of that. If this is coming from the breather is there a way to re-route it somewhere else? Any ideas would be very appreciated. Thanks, Fred
  23. Well here i go, going to atemp to install some ALPINE speakers and AMPLIFIER speakers are not going to be the problem its the amp im concerned about.End result Juke Box on 2wheels that holds over 2000 songs. LOVE my tunes load and clear!!!!!
  24. Im trying to purchase side box leather covers for my 99 RSV can you help me?
  25. Hi, I have a top box from my blue '84 that is physically in good shape but has badly sun beaten paint and is missing the lock and hinge covers. I'd like to know if anyone wants it? Free to good home, you pay shipping. Can do some pictures if there is interest. I guess it'll go to the dump if there's not. Thanks, Brian H.
