  1. I believe this has been mentioned here before, but if you haven't looked at it there are some really nice bikes. Just for giggles I entered Ol' Blue. http://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/StarVBS/StarVBSImages.aspx?id=7&pg=1&y=c
  2. I have searched for an hour and cant find it. There is a specific bike starter that will bolt right on and work perfectly for the MK1 1st gens. I want to upgrade to a 4 brush starter if I am taking the thing off. Anyone have any links or info as to what bikes have a better starter that bolt right on our bikes?
  3. The thing I hate about a 1st gen is the throttle , it is a long way to get to wot . with my big hands to go full throttle I have to break my wrest , anybody know if there is a shorter throw one that will work on our bikes ? BTW it Snaggaltooth fault ! He was talking about a 1/4 turn throttle on a over powered dirt bike:stickpoke:
  4. TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE 1930s, '40s, '50s, '60s and '70s!! First, we survived being born to mothers who may have smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes. Then, after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-based paints. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets, and, when we rode our bikes, we had baseball caps, not helmets, on our heads. As infants and children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes.. Riding in the back of a pick- up truck on a warm day was always a special treat. We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle, and no one actually died from this. We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter, and bacon. We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar. And we weren't overweight. WHY? Because we were always outside playing...that's why! We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. --And, we were OKAY. We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride them down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes.. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.. We did not have Play Stations, Nintendo’s and X-boxes. There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVDs, no surround-sound or CDs, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet and no chat rooms. WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them! We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth, and there were no lawsuits from those accidents. We would get spankings with wooden spoons, switches, ping-pong paddles, or just a bare hand, and no one would call child services to report abuse. We ate worms, and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever. We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls, and -although we were told it would happen- we did not put out very many eyes. We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them. Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law! These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers, and inventors ever. The past 50 to 85 years have seen an explosion of innovation and new ideas.. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all. If YOU are one of those born between 1925-1970, CONGRATULATIONS! You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good. Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it ? ~~~~~~~ The quote of the month by Jay Leno: "With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?"
  5. Well this is muffin's new garage set up. At least till we move somewhere else. Needed somewhere to keep all the bikes we're collecting. No they aren't all ventures, but the ventures in here are all 1st gens. Margaret
  6. Hi everyone i just picked up a 2001 RSV with 113000klm was wondering how many miles at these bikes good for before any big trouble starts . thanks
  7. I use one of these cargo nets on the scoot and have been asked where I found it. I couldn't give an answer as it came along for the ride on one of the bikes. Well here it is. If anyone is interested. http://www.harborfreight.com/motorcycle-cargo-net-67010.html http://www.harborfreight.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/370x/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/i/m/image_1985.jpg
  8. Weather must be great all over the world ....... Nothing stirring in this place ..... Ride safe my friends ....... Stuck at home doing child care ...... Really hurts too, bike is full of gas and pointed towards the door ..... Going to take my 4th nap now ...... To make it worse, three bikes just went slowly by the house - riders laughing like crazy! Hey you bikers, quit riding by, you hurting me!
  9. Asked local Yamaha dealer to quote new tire with them doing the labor on my 83 Venture. They won't work on bikes older than '85! Afraid if they break something they can't get parts. Now I see why folks are parting out much nicer bikes than mine. Guess I'm gonna have to get brave and do this myself. Studied the process but still uncomfortable. Would like to see a video with shaft/spline, brakes, ??? maintainance included. Wonder if I could find some help here... http://www.barbervintagefestival.org/ this weekend.
  10. Ok, in the next few days to about 3 weeks give or take Hubby gets his first bike, maybe 2 if the price is right. Now I do have a bike jacket but is has no armor. What should we be getting in terms of gear for riding as well as other things not often thought of? Armored leather and mesh jackets armored pants or the kevlar that goes under boots gloves rainsuits helmets (what do y'all recommend there for bluetooth and intercom/music capablities?) Bike covers Yes this will be his first bike (bikes) and he wants the bike he learns on to go to me so we can ride together when we take trips within the state. I know we are both new to this and yes we will be doing an MSC approved course before we get too involved.

  12. September 24th and 25th is the 4th annual Bikes on the Bricks in Flint Mi. They close off Saginaw St downtown and there is lots of bikes, food and fun. The Police motorcycle competition is on Saturday the 25th. Practice on Friday the 24th. Bike show with 8 categories on Saturday. My 83VR makes the Antiques. (1985 and older). Will be a fun time for all. I'm posting a breakfast meet and eat for 10:00am for any who would want to meet up and ride downtown together. http://www.bikesonthebricks.com/information.html
  13. I have been given some info on a 2005 Yamaha that they believe is a XV17AS Road Star Midnight. It has 2000 Kms on it (1250 miles), has been sitting for some time as the owner has been ill. The bike is all black with soft bags and a tank cover to match. Can anyone that knows a lot more about the second gen bikes than I tell me if $9,000 cdn is a good price for this. its only :mo money:
  14. OK, I have to fess up that I did it in my 2005 Chrysler 300c "Cage". Nicknamed the USS Saratoga. It corners a bit better than that ship though! My son and I were in N. Carolina most of the week starting with last Saturday, to set up hotels and venues for a car convention we put on each year. We were looking at the Chapel Hill/Raleigh-Durham areas, and also Charlotte. (The NASCAR Hall of Fame is WONDERFUL and a must see if you get to that area!). On the way back to Illinois we decided (well I decided, and my son, a non rider) went along with it! I drove the first time through all of rt 129, and he drove back to the dragons den hotel/restaurant etc. We ate lunch there watching bikes come and go, and then drove the skyway on the way back to IL. We had a blast, and only one Harley caught up to me, and another bike caught up to my son. We let both by as soon as possible, but were proud that our cage was able to keep up with all other traffic, in fact other than those two bikes we never saw anyone else going our direction, only bikes (and not a lot) going the other way. There were two accidents, one had an ambulance and one did not, both were on the skyway. I am glad I got to do it in my car, I will be much better prepared when I take my bike out that way, hopefully later this month or next.
  15. Saturday I was riding with a group (6 bikes) on a trip and we were in Wilke-Barre PA and met a bike and the guy was waving to us and looking at our bikes and wasn't paying attention and slamed into the back of a car. Thank god it was in the city and he wasn't going fast. He lost a little meat on his leg and I'm sure he will be sore but was ok for the most part. The bike took a hard hit on the throttle and brake cables and lines and a few scrapes but wasn't to bad. We waited for him to get help and went on our way. He was awful lucky not to be hurt worse. The whole thing happeded right in front of me.

    9 11 ride

Went on a nice ride put on by the fire departments in all the little towns around Valley city ND. We had fire truckes blocking the streets so we could get in & out of towns with out stoping. It was nice. there was only 342 bikes!! Do you have any idea how far 342 bikes streach out on the highway??????????????????? Ok it's 4.5 miles. Then try to park them in a small town for a refreshment. It can be dun!!! Very well Organized. The money raised goes to locale victimes of 911. Meaning if some ones house burnes. they will give them some money for food & clothing to help them get started back on there feet. Every little bit helps when you lost every thing!!! Ride SAFE & have Fun Put on by the "RED KNIGHTS MOTORCYCLE CLUB' NEVER FORGET 911
  17. I have a rather strange question for the forum... has anyone every relocated their kickstand to the right hand side? The reason I ask is because I recently had an accident resulting in a broken ankle and a dislocated knee cap. It happened while I was trying to kick my leg over my saddle because I had a T-bag on my pillion and i couldn't swing my leg as usual. Anyhow, I am in for a long recovery (this year's riding season is done ) So I thought about relocating my kickstand so I could mount my bike from the right and not stress my weakened left leg. I can't see any good reason why I couldn't do this. The only real reason most bikes lean left is because most bikes had their pipes on the right (not an issue with the RSV). It might give me some issues when i'm parking in a group of bikes, but that's a minor thing. The hardest part of this I can see is modding or making a new swivel for the kickstand. I might be able to just flip it over - but I'd have to cut off and re-weld the tab that sticks out for you to operate it. And of course, I'd have to weld a reinforcing plate on that side and re-route the switch wiring. Any advice?
  18. I stopped in at Iowa City Motorsports to buy gloves, glasses etc and sitting out front was this 1985 in really good condition with low miles. I wouldn't promote a dealers bikes but these older bikes seem to be getting scarcer all the time. Here's their web page if you want to take a look. Sales guy showed me a blond 83 in back that has even fewer miles and in even better condition but they haven't put up on the site yet. http://www.iowacitymotorsports.com/pre_owned_detail.asp?sid=02512628X9K8K2010J9I33I44JPMQ841R0&veh=1799554 Iowa Guy

    HD pipes are installed

I finally got my HD pipes on last night, went smooth as silk and no I did not drill them out and kind doubt I will like the sound like it is.. Only problem is the bike won't shut off it just :Venture: I believe the bikes has more power than when I drill out the OEM pipes but that could just be me I would never drill another set of OEM pipes out..
  21. In this area we have a big problem with tailgaters period. But when they tailgate us when we are on the bikes we run into another problem. See my son's thread ( Friend killed on bike) The last 3 years I have been confronting the tailgaters nicely when I have the opportunity and nicely telling them the problems involved when they tailgate a bike. Don't know if it helps, but some do say they are sorry and didn't realize. Once in a while it turns into a confrontation, but oh well, they need to be told. What do some of you do? I thought about ball bearings,etc--but I'm more afraid of causing an accident and getting someone not involved hurt. I'm talking about the problem tailgaters where slowing down, waving them around, etc don't help.
  22. This seems a bit pricey to me. RandyA http://cgi.ebay.com/87-model-yamaha-venture-royal-/320578578158?pt=AU_Motorcycles&hash=item4aa3f8e6ee
  23. A new member here jpbragwell1215 came by the house today. He rides a Tour Deluxe. We had a chance to compare bikes and talk a while. A really nice guy.

    Noisy??

Just got done reading an article on a website http://www.Blackfive.com. The writer is part of an American Legion Legacy ride to Milwaukee. He has been blogging about the ride for a few days now. The part that caught my eye was this: -Some of the 'non-American bike' riders made a request to be able to start their bikes before the Harley's do. Seems they can't tell when their bikes are running after the Harley's kick in... What a hoot!! At a gas or food stop, it must be like a NASCAR race when all the Harleys are running!!
  25. I rode with the PGR group the last leg of the Kitsap (WA) 9-11 Memorial project. This was an escort of two pieces of steel from the twin towers that are to be part of a memorial in Silverdale WA. We escorted the truck from Post Falls, ID to Silverdale yesterday and rode approximately 365 miles. It was an experience. We left Post fall with our group plus other groups (about 400 bikes). Stopped in Moses Lake for fuel and picked up a couple of hundred more bikes. Then on to Elensburg and again picked up a couple of hundred more. On to North Bend where we stopped for dignitaries, a couple of hundred more, more escort vehicles and much to our surprise cops.... Lots and lots of cops. The cops were great because they shut down every road section for our use (approximately 1000 bikes at this point). I-90--closed, 18 closed, I-5 closed, Tacoma Narrows bridge closed. What a feeling riding with all of these bikes with no traffic worries. The best part of this was seeing all of the spectators on almost every overpass waving flags. From North Bend on the crowds on the overpasses grew and most overpasses also had one or two fire engines or rescue vehicle. The arrival to Silverdale was also awsome as we proceeded into the parking area we were greated by two crossed ladder engines with a flag and two rows of military men (Navy and army I think) at attention as we passed. Quite a once in a lifetime experience I am glad I participated. Any others members there? To many bikes to look for anyone in particular.
