  1. RideGear.com is not a good place to shop. I have seen complaints on other forums and have received comments confirming my bad experience. They have been reported to the Better Business Bureau on a number of occasions. Has anyone here had experience good or bad with this company?
  2. Hi everyone. Just thought I'd say hola from Mazatlan. We have been here since last Wednesday and aren't going back to Indiana until Saturday. Needless to say, I should get a bit of color in this pasty white skin! Having the bike down here would have been cool as heck. Now you have to get used to the way folks drive, but I believe they aren't too bad. They aren't distracted by cell phones and such. Well back to the beach. It's a routine. Lay around in the sun, read a book, drink alot of water then on to the stronger stuff. Rinse, repeat.... See ya soon! 3. Item number: 270226706429 This could be a deal; for someone. It don't look bad. I would watch it but am heading south in about a hour This looks interesting.
  4. Hoping to verify a diagnosis. Recent acquisition of an 83, required a wiring harness replacement. Bike came alive and after a few gremlins is running. For some reason, the running lights are out. Bulbs are good, and finagling a probe into the connector on the CMS shows 12 volts on the blue wire from the fuse block, but only 0.8 volts or so out on the blue/white wire for the running lights. Current thinking: bad solder joint in CMS, or bad CMS. Any other thoughts? Three of the four carb covers have silicone dabbed on the middle of them. Taking one off it looks like something ground through the cover, leaving a hole that the silicone is now sealing. Can anyone think of a good reason to do this, or how that could happen without a major crash? Kinda baffling. Thanks all! Paul
  5. I just bought this 83 VR as my first bike. Yeah I know, 'Wow, that is a big first bike'. But it was a pretty good deal and it runs great. Anyway... 1. What exactly is the difference between a first generation bike and a second generation bike? 2. How do I tell if the front fork seals are bad? I mean outside of obvious things like leaking, because they are not leaking. What is happneing is this: When riding the bike around town, just about every time I hit any kind of bump in the road the front end bangs really loud like something is loose in the front end, but nothing seems to be loose. So I am wondering if this is a symptom of bad front forks.
  6. Hi all, I really tore into it and I have most of the body parts painted. Just have the 2 bags bottoms to do today, and I have them done. Not perfect but good enough for the woman I go out with. I was looking at the side vents for the engine covers. They aren't really bad, but not perfect, and somewhere, I think here I saw that someone had made some smoked acrylic windows to replace them. Does anyone know the thread? I will post pics when IO get it together. D

    Bub's tips

I guess you could call this a "rant", and if it needs to be moved to another category then please do so. My '04 had just had a set of Bub's mufflers put on it not long before I got it. After my first long ride to the Smokies in May '06 I noticed the chrome on the tips was blistering really bad. I contacted Bub's and they told me to send a copy of the receipt, which I did. Then they told me I'd have to send the tips to them for inspection by their "Q.A" dept. and IF they were defective they would replace them in a couple of weeks. I proceeded to tell them that I felt it was totally unacceptable for me to have to sit out prime riding time while they decided what to do. I finally got them replaced after 6 e-mails and a credit card number to charge if they didn't receive the old ones within 10 days of delivery of the new ones. Well,,, guess what!! It's been 20 months since they were replaced, and now they are blistered again, just as bad as before, after being assured that they were no longer plated but polished billet. I don't expect any assistance at all now, but to me it doesn't look like they are putting out nearly as quality of a product as they claim. Oh well, the e-mail's on the way!!
  8. has anyone tried a diehard battery? if so, good or bad idea to use one? thanks
  9. I am looking around on EBay and trying to stay in the good graces of my wife by not buying bike parts this one looks like a good deal if you need one. For those of you looking to add that second break light be it on the top or as I prefer under the trunk this might not be a bad idea: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-HIGH-LEVEL-LED-3RD-BRAKE-LIGHT-LED-BRAKE-LIGHT_W0QQitemZ250226900848QQihZ015QQcategoryZ33713QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem It's listed as a buy it now for 9.99 and 9.95 shipping it's 14" x 1.5" x 1.5 comes with double sided tape to mount it on on back glass, but 2 holes are also available for those who want to screw it on if needed on a trim . Take a look it might be what your looking for. It looks like a SOMA type of brake light and for the price it's not a bad deal. I'm doing a search in the parts section using this as a search "3rd brake light led -cover -decal -overlay" without the quotes. There are some other interesting light setups that can also be adapted as a second light. One of the ones I'm thinking of is use one from a pickup truck that has the cargo lights on each side of the brake light and use them as a flashing lights when stopped but I have to check the laws before I buy one. Another thing you can do is make your own custom mount by picking up a piece of angle aluminum (1 1/2 inch) and mount the light into it cut the ends and bend them to fit in between the helmet hangers bolt it in then wire it up. I did that with one I bought and gave it that brushed look by sanding it then painted it a semigloss black.
  10. While looking thru ebay tonite I came across a MM RSV and after looking at the pictures, I thought I knew the bike, so I emailed the owner and asked him if he had been to one of the Vogel rallies and he replied that he had. To make a long story short, he has broken up with his girlfriend and is getting out of motorcylcing for a while, and thus it appears on Ebay. It still bears the scars from the lay down he had with it, but they are not that bad really. Check it out. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330221159942&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:MOTORS:1123
  11. I have a 1989 Venture. When I crawled underneath to get a good look at my brake pads I found this. Hope the pics show it well enough. The pad to the outside of the wheel (ie right side of bike when sitting on it) has worn at a very bad angle. The other pad is not as bad, but actually has the opposite wear angle. Obviously, the pads need replacing. I suspect the pistons and seals as well? Are there only two pistons in the rear calibre? That is what local Yamaha dealer says....at about $113 each and another $50 for pads. Is there a cheaper source online? Should I get a kit and redo the master rear as well? Thanks.
  12. Anyone try one of these HID retrofit light kits? Good, Bad, OK? Any comments?
  13. I'd like to know how do I know if I have a bad rear shock. When I ride with a passenger it seems to bottom out easily. But I'm 300 lbs. & my wife weighs about 140 lbs. So I realize there is some weight on there. I have one of those hand pumps and I give it a few pumps before we both ride, but it seems we still bottom out easily. When I ride alone it takes a pretty extreme bump to make me bottom out.

  15. So far, I would say I have a keeper. The bike just 'feels' stronger. She moves easily through the gears. She responds when I twist her throttle. Everything just feels more comfortable. I don't know how else to describe it. I'm getting a little more noise, but I can still hear my tunes... no problem. As far as fuel mileage... First lets agree to limit any comments to the bikes rear end. I know I get bad mpg compared to many of you, but why that is would be another thread. Yes I keep the tires within 2 psi of max sidewall pressure. Changed the plugs... one was a little darker, but not bad. All were dry. I use SeaFoam several times a year. Chokes all the way in. Carbs are tuned regularly by me. Engine runs good and can haul my rear around faster than I have any business going. Maybe it's a combination of being as big 1up as most of you are 2up... of pushing a lot of air with a wide windshield and lower deflectors and a wide body... or flying the two 11x14 flags (a buddy said his mileage went down when his flags went up)... or riding at the speed limit +5mph (real speed, not yama-speed)... or not wanting to waste time getting from 10 mph to 75 mph... or who knows what else. I've fueled up 234 times since she first hit the driveway. I've averaged 31.5 mpg in 31952 miles. I also keep a running avg of the last 10 fill-ups. Over the winter, that avg has dropped from 32.5 to 29.5 now. I say all this so you can decide for yourself if you think your mileage may be affected in the same way as mine. Four tanks before the VMax rear swap - avg 29.57 Four tanks since the VMax rear swap - avg 29.47 Yep... I think it's a keeper.
  16. Ok, my Rivco air horns quit? Press the button, sounds like its farting? Can't find a hose leak. Can the diaphram go bad? Is it worth repairing or replace with one of the other horns that have been of recent discusion here?
  17. Ok here it goes i am looking at getting a stebel natulis horn for my rsv. Any suggestion on where the best price might be?? Also has anyone had any problems with one? Also the barrons lowering kit ...does it change the handleing at all good or bad, at 5'7" i could use about an inch closer to the ground and dont want to mod the seat cause its really comfy...
  18. We had a Great Ride yesterday, 246miles:cool10: My face got blistered, so must have had a great time... Dummy me, had the sunscreen in the saddle bag..didn`t know I had to actually put it on.... any way, all was great except for the wind and road noise through the headsets was real bad, bad enough that we finally just unplugged them. Well I ordered the Mic-Mutes this morning.. no more unwanted noise, I hope, and all that I have heard about them, is that they are great.... If it makes Lil Tex happy then everyone will be happy:). When I get them I will use Dons post to install and let ya`ll know how it goes!! Have a Great Day
