  1. browsing the parts and accessories on e-bay and saw a red light changer for bikes. I had heard of them before but never thought much about it. The add says you mount under bike and it disrupts the electromagnetic sensor enough to trip the red light to green. I,ve never had a problem getting that left turn green arrow to trip for me. Are they saying it,ll trip any sooner than normal? Don,t alot of intersections have photo sensors now?[cheaper to install]. Do they help if your not centered on the magnetic sensor?. Or is this just another '' deer whistle'', sounds good but don,t waste your money. Just curious
  2. We are going to be headed to the Dragon rally after the international. Is anyone else doing the same? There is some time there for site seeing and we are looking either to tag along with someone who wants to do the same. Gotta see as much as possible in those few days as its pretty rare we can get that far away from home. The trip home will be a race of sorts to make it back in time for some cage camping with friends here so we wont have much site seeing time then.
  3. Once again, we've more than made up for our membership fee. Someone on here posted a thread a couple of weeks ago about inserting your headset ear peices actually into the side of the helmet. Told the hubby about it last night and he just called. He just did the retrofit and said it worked great....don't even know they are in there. We take off for a 5k trip in a couple of days and all I could think about was how much my ears were going to hurt as our helmets fit perfect without the earpiece, but tight with them in. Now, thanks to the post, we'll both be comfy!! Tried to find the post, but couldn't so whoever started it thanks!!!!
  4. Hi Looks like we may FINALLY get at least a short break in the weather so I'm planning a solo three day trip that will take me from New Brunswick, through Maine and New Hampshire, into Vermont (July 09). I expect to stay overnight in the Barre/Montpelier/Burlington area, take a ferry across Lake Champlain, circle through the Adirondacks and stay the second night (July 10) in the North Conway area. Return to NB via Hwy 1. This is my tentative route: Trip I don't know much about that part of Vermont so I was wondering if someone can recommend a reasonably economical place to stay between Barre and Burlington? I'll be rolling in fairly late so I want to make arrangements before I go. Also looking for restaurant recommendations and alternate routes that might be worthwhile. I can't really extend the total distance because of time limitations. Thanks Ross
  5. I am in the later stage of planning trip to North Augusta SC in first week of August. Was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for camping spots. Have not completely figured out route, was hoping to say off interstates, but may have to yet for short time frame. Mapping program doesn't show towns very well. Thanks for any help. Daryl :cool10:
  6. We're heading out this week on a trip up through northern Michigan on our way to northern Ontario. Thought we would head over to the west side of the state, since I haven't spent a lot of time over that way and check things out along the way to the "Big Mack". Any suggestions on places to go and things to see. Good bike roads etc. Thanks in advance.
  7. Got back from 4 day trip yesterday, Seattle, to Kalispell Mt. and up to near Glacier Nat. park. Good run, bike performed great. Hit some bad road construction on Hwy 93 just north of Missoula, Mt. 10 miles of gravel. I wanted to see " FlatHead Lake " area. Great place to ride. Weather still on the cold side up in that area. ( 42 deg. here in Seattle this morning, must be Global Warming !! ) On return trip yesterday on I-90 from Vantage Wa. to top of Cascade range, I hit some really bad cross winds, about 30 to 40 MPH Winds. Traffic on I-90 was heavy and running 70 to 75, and that wind was vicious. The 1st Gens Do NOT like cross winds. Frankly it was a battle to keep the bike on the road. Winds seemed to be changing direction, thru the canyons, getting hit from the left, then the right, etc. For those 1st Gen riders, who have never encountered, high cross winds, be warned , these bike have a lot of surface for cross winds to have effect !!! Anyway, 1250 mile 4 day trip, great ride, great scenery up around Glacier Nat. Park. Lots of bikes headed North on Mt. Hwy 93. A challenging ride, I highly reccomend. I also rode sections of Hwy #2, I highly reccomend, from Dakota's all the way to the Pacific Coast, if you have the time !! Deffinatly put Hwy #2 on your " To DO, Someday List " !!!! Well, guess I will have to cut the grass today And wash the bike, its really dirty !!
  8. Hey all, I'm heading on a bike trip with some family members (our annual trip) and I'm trying to find some lodging near Manistique, MI. We're trying to keep the cost as low as we can. There will be 7 or 8 of us. Any input would be appreciated.
  9. Just a spur of the moment trip! 802 miles in one weekend.....it was great! http://picasaweb.google.com/yamahamer69/Dragon?feat=directlink
  10. planning on trip around lake superior was wondering if anyone has made the trip and if you have any suggestions on what to see and where to stay etc.
  11. Well, My SUV has been slowly crapping out and I knew with what was coming it was going to really cost me. Yesterday, I decided to go looking for something New to trade for, before I sunk even more $ into a lost cause. BAD NEWS - Robbed My Motorcycle Trip fund -I found a 2009 Extended Cab F150 that I traded for, but to do so I had to rob my trip money for down payment. Good News - New 2009 F150 - Man is it nice to have a truck again. Actually the truck with the V8 is going to get as good or better than my SUV did and I'll have even more towing power for my enclosed trailer. Bad, Bad News - With all my trip $ gone, I will NOT be coming to the International Rally in August. Oh well, S--t happens, I'll just be riding a lot of day trips. Got to talk to LA about the HUB room I had reserved for us and see what he wants to do. You'all better take lots of pictures
  12. Well M.D. was a great time this year.(my first ever) My uncle and brother only had good things to say about how awesome this group was, and how they felt like insiders not outcasts. We had a mini vacation planned so we pulled into Dons around 2200 on Friday and TRIED to set up MY TENT!!! That was a joke in itself all weekend. Thanks to several onlookers it only took us 6 people to get it set up. (thanks Squidley, Lonna, and others) We then talked to several of the members that I have only met on this forum. In the a.m. we went to town for breakfast and gas and came back to start M.D. My uncle would like to insert here that having never met or talked to Squidley, he was very impressed that he had no problem looking at and trying to tune the carbs on his 1984 goldwing. P.S. Squidley, he said it improved the performance on the rest of the trip and said to thank you. I had the Butler mod done to my seat on my 99 Venture, and the rest of the trip I was the one trying to get the other two to quit stopping! What an awesome improvement for the seat, Thank You Rick!!! We then ate lunch and I was pushed to leave early since we had a long trip ahead of us. Half way out of Ohio I wanted to turn around because I had forgotten to find Lonna and get a piece of the strawberry rhubarb cheesecake she had made at my request:( I am so sorry I missed that Lonna, i'm sure it had to have been awesome. We finished our four day weekend with riding Red River Gorge, Nada Tunnel, Natural bridge, and then rode to southwestern Indiana for a night. On Monday we rode back to Michigan. In all we rode four states in four days and had a total of just under 1500 miles. Oh and did I mention it was sunny for the whole trip, with the exception of the last day, when we rolled back into Michigan. We did have some sun peaking through the clouds on several occations Monday, but a half hour from home we rode through the only rain we seen the whole trip and it made up for it. We ended up riding through a tornado warning area where they were evidently told to take cover. We rode through without injury fortuanatly, and have memories to share for a lifetime. So I figured I would share some pictures of this great time. Big Mike P.S. thanks to Eck for my cover and manuals. P.P.S. The blasting zone pictures have a special meaning.....My brother works with a guy who calls sh...ing, BLASTING!!! He says he feels it is a nicer way of saying it, I couldn't stop laughing when I heard that. So we thought we would get these pictures and install one on the inside of the bathroom door and one on the outside of the bathroom door as a practical joke!
  13. After dealing or should I say not dealing with the problem of 25 mpg,Skydoc17 offered to show me how to install my carb diaprahms them at MD...He did that and the needle mod while he was in there....All I can say is WOW.... From 25 mpg to 40 mpg on the trip home...Riding 2-up with all the Clampett stuff strapped to the bike at 70-75 across the turnpike.... Earl, you are the "MAN"......:D Thanks again.....
  14. We are still working our way home.....spent the nite at dales bros last night and the weather isnt looking good for taking off any time soon for the rest of the trip home. We still have 8 or 9 hrs to go yet and after the trip to dons in the pouring rain for many many miles we r trying to avoid it heading back.......it wasnt fun.....
  15. Please tell me something. No, not that. How do you delete pms? I know I'm overlooking something, still tired from MD trip, but I can't figure out how to do this. Thanks.
  16. All, OMG where do I start? Mimi & I (Charlie) went on our fist ever weekender and camping trip on the Bike about 900 miles round trip. It is way to hard to list ALL THE GREAT PEOPLE we meet too many too list them all. Some THANK YOU's I must Post: Don, Thanks for everything... Brad, Thanks for Carb Tune "Tweak". Gene, Saddle Bags were Great and You were better (Vet Stuff) Rick, Mimi arrived with a sore tailbone (8-9 hours seat time). After fixing Her 2nd Gen Pillow Seat she arrived home with less stops and Zero, Nadda, Zipola Tailbone Pain. Now the only PITA left is me LOL. She wants to say THANK YOU PS... Don I filed for "squatters rights for 2010 and beyond" under the weeping willow tree. I figure I can rent out the remaining shade and donate to St-Judes. Also the folks talking to the Weeping Willow tree were no totally crazy (Shhhhhh....) Charlie & Mimi God Bless
  17. We are back and SAFE. We got back yesterday from our first road trip on the venture. I was very pleased at the comfort, space for all the stuff we needed and the performance of the bike. Thanks to all of you for all the advice on packing and bike maintenance items...tips and tricks. We tried to leave Thrusday at 6AM but the weather did not look good. There was a lot of weather on the Mississppi river that we were gonn have to cross to get to ARK. The front passed Thrusday night and we attempted to leave again at 6 AM only to find a mist of rain Friday morning. Waited till about 9 AM and got on our way. I just got a Zumo 660 and had the whole route mapped out and loaded in the Garmin. IT worked great for fuel, lodging and keep us going in the right direction. We made the whole trip and only 41 miles were on the interstate so we could really see the countryside. Crossing the Mississppi delta was quite a drag...miles and miles of flat straight roads with nothing but corn or soy beans. We went north and crossed the river at Helena on Hwy49 with the first night destination of Harrison ARK. 450 miles the first day...made it fine thanks to the Butler mods on the seats. I forgot to put on the sunscreen the first day..now my face is falling off. ARK seems to be a very bike friendly state. No Helment law (which is OK with me...it should be your choice to wear a helment not the govements, I always wear mine) and lots of signs posted that say "Look twice save a life...motorcycles are everywhere". Roads were all very good also. Holels we stayed at were biker friendly with towels avalible to wipe off your bikes and they give you maps of senic rides in the areas telling you where fuel is availible and how many curves are on that route. We rode the ozarks down to Hot springs on Hwy 7 and stopped for the night in Hot Springs. We walked the city over and looked at all we could there also. One thing...seems folks don't know how to parallel park in Hot Springs. We had a friend of ours with us on a Ultra Classic so both the bikes were parked on the street same as about 300 more bikes, while we were eating. A lady trying to parallel park in pulled up close to the ultra and turned her front tire getting ready to back into the parking place and hit the Harley with her tire...almost turning it over and into mine. No damage and luckly we were right there. 5 minutes later a truck pulled in the parking place in front of the bikes and missed my fender by at least 1 inch. Then could not get the truck straight and backed toward the bikes 6-8 times with-in 6 inches. We had to go after that. We did not get to finish our lunch. Seems if we kept them rolling, we had more control over what happens. Trip back was great...we came back south and crossed at Greenville MS...again miles and miles of flat farm land with nothing to see. It was like walking on a treadmill..same seanery for hours. We made it back about 3:30 yesteday...Safe and sound. 992 miles later and ready to go again. We will go back but not across the MS delta. Not many photos...but we will do better next time. Wife claims she was too busy holding on...to take photos:rotf:

  19. Hey all, just a general notice, that some of us Ontario Members will be heading to Deals Gap, on a 4-5 day road trip, Sept 21. As of right now, it is Dragerman, Rob (forget his forum nick) and myself. This trip will be during the week (Monday to Thursday or Friday) as it was suggested that it is better to ride the Tail of the Dragon, during the week. In September most of the kids will be back in school, so tourists will be at a minimum. This trip is in the very first stages of planning. I am announcing it, for 2 reasons, to find out if anyone wants to come with us (or meet up with us along the way) and to get suggestions from some of the members here who have been there. I am really looking forward to this trip. I am sure before we go, we will get together to discuss the trip in detail, and finalize plans. Ok, so who is interested? Being interested does not commit you to the trip. Once we figure out some meets to do planning, I will announce them. I would be happy if there were 6-8 bikes going, the more the merrier I guess. Feel free to drop Dragerman, or myself an email or PM. Lets git 'er done!
  20. Just wishing everyone who is heading to Don's to have a safe trip there and back. Wish I could have joined you all but it bees that way sometimes....
  21. Sheila and I are planning a trip to south Florida at the end of June already have reservations at the Beachcomber in Pompano Beach from 6-24 thru 7-1. We will be trailering the bike and thinking about a trip to the Keys on the bike, just wondering if any members in the S. Fl. area would be interested in making a ride to the Keys between those dates. If any takers just P.M. me so we can make arangments to meet and ride and eat lunch and ride some more. Joel
  22. Last week my riding buddy and I had taken a trip down to ride the Dragon and to catch a few roads down in NC and SC while we were down that way. We spent the night at the Two Wheel Inn in Robinsville on Thursday night planning to head out 129 East on Friday morning. Friday morning the road was still messy and it was pretty foggy after the heavy rains we had on Thursday evening so I was trying, (I thought) to take it easy as we left the Inn. About 2 miles into the trip I fell into a curve a little faster than was needed. Since the road was wet I didn't want to use too much rear brake so I grabbed some front brake and promptly killed what lean I had as I went into the curve. As I got closer to the double yellow line I saw 3 cars coming at me. I knew this wasn't gonna be a good situation, but I kept braking and leaning, all the time hoping for the best. The bike drifted over far enough to the left to hit the first of the yellow stripes. (Freshly painted and thick of course). Once it hit the painted stripe the whole front end SLID all the way into the left lane of the road. Thanks to some very attentitive drivers, I met all three cars with the bike in the left lane, and me praying while I was hanging on for dear life and leaning over the yellow stripes. All I can say is that once again God was watching over me. I was pretty shook up, plumb scared might be a better term, but we were able to finish our ride that day after I stopped and got my pusle and nerves back under control. Needless to say my riding style was not very agressive for the rest of the trip. Thanks for letting me share my little misadventure.
  23. We are planning a trip to the Southeast Ark/Southwest Ok area for RV camping and take in the countryside. We have been looking all over the Internet at different roads and byways to find some scenic and fun roads to travel. Does anyone have some suggestions as to which roads are the best for motorcycling. Keep in mind my lean & speed control monitor will be riding with me. Moakster
  24. In a week and a half, The wife (BOSS) and I are leaving Illinois......Stopping in Plattsburgh ,NY to visit some old Military friends. Hopefully the weather will be good to us, and we will hopefully have NO problems on the road!!!pray for a safe journey for us!!!!! Thanks all. and hopefully we'll get some good pics up of the trip. Arcadia national park should be awesome!!!!
  25. (I'm putting this here, and letting some moderator who is smarter than me decide where it really goes.) Last week, I took a trip from Houston to the Grand Canyon and back on my RSTD. My buddy and I left Sunday and returned Saturday. Total trip distance was 3320 miles. I've delayed posting not because I had to recover, but because I wanted to post good pictures. :-) I'm also hoping to attach a Google Earth .KMZ file so you can follow along. I take my GPS everywhere with me, so I have a good track of my actual path. Day 1 we left Houston. We drove to Marfa, Texas via the long way. By that, I mean we headed to San Antonio before going to Del Rio. We stopped in Langtry to visit Judge Roy Bean's haunts, then pressed on to Alpine. We turned off path and did a circle of the Davis Mountains before we ended in Marfa. We saw the famous Marfa Lights. It was a good day, and only 700 miles. I might add that I was a bit afraid that I wouldn't have the range necessary to get between gas stops on this trip. I bought two MSR cans and filled them along with some Sea Foam. I never did need them, but having them along gave me the confidence to really test my bike's range. Day 2 we drove from Marfa to Safford, AZ. We stopped to take in the Prada Marfa, and hit I-10 at Van Horn. We actually split up in Deming, NM. He had family to visit, and Silver City called my name. I ran straight up to the city, choking on a dust cloud from a tailing operation. Ugh. That meant I needed to clean out my throat with a beer in Silver City. ;-) The next stretch is a keeper. I headed north and turned west onto Hwy 78 through Mule Creek. The highway through Apache National Forest is awesome, going from plains to forests to expansive horizons and switchbacks. I crossed the border into Arizona in a forest with a cattle grate. Awesome. Unfortunately, descending down the mountains into Safford meant I entered a furnace. But a nice Mexican dinner and cool shower had me primed for the next day. Day 2 mileage was a respectable 468 good miles. Day 3 was even better! We got an early start and had breakfast at the Morenci Motel on the edge of the Morenci copper mine. This open pit mine is enormous! It is literally eating mountains. Oh yeah, the breakfast was pretty good too. Leaving the mine and heading north, we soon forgot the working world. We were on US 191 through the Apache National Forest, the Coronado Trail, and it was superb. We kept climbing and climbing through switchbacks on good roads. Then we descended, only to climb again! It was glorious! Then we descended into Alpine, AZ for gas. After that, we ran into our first rain. We were planning to take another mountain road west, but opted instead to zip over to Show Low. That stretch of US 60 has fierce crosswinds, which were fun at first but then made me wonder about my huge windscreen. As we entered Show Low, we got wet. But a longish lunch in Show Low let the rain pass by, leaving humidity in its wake. We took US 60 from Show Low through beautiful terrain, ending our day in Globe, AZ. That too was a nice stretch, but pales compared to US 191. However, the scenic overlook in For Apache Indian Reservation is truly stunning. Day 3 clocked in at just over 300 miles, largely of fun twisty roads. I need to add that our next trip will not end in Globe, which just didn't offer the amenities we wanted. Day 4 we rode up Hwy 87 to Clints Well through the Tonto National Forest past the Roosevelt Dam. We stopped off to take photos of the saguaro cactus blooms and discovered from a friendly ranger that high above us were cave dwellings! Very cool! We stopped in Payson for gas, and decided it was a much better overnight destination than Globe. The trip from Payson to Clints Well to Flagstaff was also a keeper. It wasn't challenging, but it sure was beautiful! After a BBQ lunch in Flagstaff, we rode through a torrential downpour to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. The rain drops were huge, freezing cold, and laced with ice (it felt, and, I heard later, literally). It was heavy slogging through what could have been beautiful terrain. I don't know; I couldn't hardly see through the stuff. But, as we approached the Grand Canyon the weather cleared and we could enjoy the grandeur. To say the Grand Canyon is stunning is an understatement. We were treated to a gorgeous sunset, and returned to our rooms in Tusayan (hint: the 7 Mile Lodge is clean and inexpensive). A good dinner made us forget all about the rain. Day 4 was a short 328 miles, made seemingly longer because of the rain. On Day 5, we made a hard choice. We changed our plans and started heading back. We were told that Arizona was getting their monsoon early, and we could expect rain every day. Rather than take mountain roads when we couldn't enjoy the vistas, we chose to save those for another day. Accordingly, we drove through the gorgeous segment between Flagstaff and Prescott knowing it was to be our last truly beautiful stretch. I have been through Sedona, and the overt "mysticism" is annoying to me. The red rocks really are beautiful, but founding a tourist enclave based on that is not my cuppa joe. We had lunch in Jerome (fantastic burger with cream cheese and serrano peppers mixed in!), and I much preferred its grittiness and more biker-like attitude. After Jerome, we had to make a dash to Prescott, where the heavens opened again. We rode through very nasty weather down the freeway to Carefree, where the rain paused. We skirted sprinkles down Hwy 79 all the way down to Catalina. A nice steak and cold beverage later, we were ensconced in our room at the Best Western. Day 5 was a truncated 375 miles. Day 6 began in rain that made the commute through Tucson a bear. We rode on the service road of I-10 for miles, thanks to construction blocking all the on-ramps. Stopping at every light and getting rained on was crap. But the weather cleared enough that we decided to take a chance and visit Tombstone. I'm glad we did, because the turn off I-10 was a turn for the better. My photos of Tombstone show white fluffy clouds that make my tale of non-stop rain seem like a nut job's ranting. However, we weren't back on I-10 for a half hour before it began raining again. By now we had loads of experience riding in the rain. Even so, when we got to the Texas border we had to either stop or put on snorkels. An hour's wait and an early dinner, and we fought El Paso's afternoon rush hour traffic. Things got floody again on the far side of town, making the ride up to Van Horn very ugly indeed. I actually lost my buddy after the Border Patrol checkpoint when he exited into Sierra Blanca hoping I'd stopped there. I didn't realize he wasn't behind me for a few miles, but then there was nowhere to turn around. The next 20 miles to the first overpass to stop under were bad. Finally, he pulled in and explained that he simply couldn't see me. Together we rode to Van Horn, where a brand new Hampton Inn seemed like a slice of Heaven. We'd begun the day thinking we might do an ironbutt home. But the rain turned our 1000 mile aspirations into a 512 mile slog. The last day was a mix of nice weather and rain, perhaps half and half. The worst moment of the trip happened on the 1604 bypass around San Antonio. The road is covered with tar jagged snakes. My buddy pulled out to pass a car in the rain, and I accelerated to do the same. As I did, it seems like my rear tire got into a tar-snake that had settled, and stayed there. My rear wheel weaved wildly at 55 mph. I let off the throttle and kept the front wheel straight. I don't know if that is what I was supposed to do, but it worked. I regained control, fought the burst of adrenaline, and kept on. We parted ways just before 1604 met I-10. He was heading to Victoria to visit his parents, and I was headed home. I don't know if he was as lucky, but I got to drive through the heaviest rain yet. Cars were pulled over to the side of the road, but I was dry inside my Frogg Togg's and just kept going. I felt like I wouldn't be dry until I was in my garage. The weather did clear as I got off I-10 for the last time. I had a nice little run home from then on. Day 7 ended at 628 miles, with a trip total of 3320 miles. It was a good one. I regret missing some great places, like Mount Lemon, but that just means I need another trip. :-) Thanks to the members here who gave me some great suggestions on where to visit. As a final note, when I bought my RSTD, it was 2 years old with only 2000 miles. Since I got it late last July, I've put on 18,000 miles and she now has 20K on the odometer. She was meant to be ridden, and that's my plan.
