Couple of suggestions for ya..... 1. Change to a Vmax-geared rearend. You won't believe the difference it will make. 2. Get a more aerodynamic windshield, if you are still using the Yammie stock one. That thing is definitely a pig. A shorter ShowChrome (which is what I have) or the Clearview will make a huge difference in that "slamming into the wind" feeling. You still won't outrun an 1800, but I'll bet you'll be more comfortable after a full day in the saddle. Joe

Hmmmm......how much power is enough? If you're a touring rider, isn't a machine that will run comfortably at 110mph fast enough? I owned a 1500 Goldwing for 6 years, and an 1100 GW before that. I know the riding position of a Wing....and for MY BODY, the Venture is soooooooooooo much more comfortable. Can someone on a GL1800 outrun me? Sure. But a Busa will outrun the 1800....so what's the point. Somebody's bike will always be faster. I have fond memories of Big Red (my 94 Wing), and even...silly as it sounds...fond emotions toward that bike. So many miles, so many great trips, new friends met, etc.....but I sure wouldn't go back to it now that I have my Venture. Yeah, the shocks are priced at a ridiculous amount, no doubt. And the Venture has its quirks....but so do Wings, even 1800's. Go read the GW forums and you'll see what I mean. People there complain about the 1800's issues as much if not more than people here complain about the Venture's issues. None of them are perfect. Nope, for me the comfort of the Venture cannot be beat (well, I admit I haven't ridden the Victory, so I don't know about that one). I realize that other's bodies may react differently and some may actually prefer the seating position of the Wing...but not me.

All I can say without getting in trouble, is that it is time wipe the slate clean and start all over. How did we get into such a state?

And I can absolutely agree with that statement!

I read MCN nearly every month (a friend passes on his mags to me). Love the magazine, and mostly respect what they do. That said, I have "taken issue" with some of the response that they give to readers in their tech section. They have told people to never use any weight motor oil other than what the manufacturer recommends. They have told people to never run a synthetic motor oil or rear end oil unless the manufacturer recommends that. How many of you violate those recommendations. Any of you nay-sayers about DynaBeads running any oil, brake fluid, air filters, oil filters, horns, tires, etc other than what the mfg recommends? MCN seems to have issue with what you are doing if that is the case. As far as I am concerned, MCN is free to express those opinions. And I can understand why they may do so, to some degree. If they recommended that you use a 5w-40 synthetic when the mfg recommends 10w-40 dino oil, some lunatic would probably sue MCN if they ran a different oil and then had any engine problem. I personally don't think it is too wise for me to bash a product that I have had no experience with. I hate the taste of rashly spoken words.

I can almost guarantee that this is a scam. Here is a copy of the law that pertains to refusal to answer questions. Note that the fine is $100, not $5000: Title 13 Sec. 221. Refusal or neglect to answer questions; false answers (a) Whoever, being over eighteen years of age refuses or willfully neglects, when requested by the Secretary, or by any other authorized officer or employee of the Department of Commerce or bureau or agency thereof acting under the instructions of the Secretary or authorized officer, to answer, to the best of his knowledge, any of the questions on any schedule submitted to him in connection with any census or survey provided for by subchapters I, II, IV, and V of chapter 5 of this title, applying to himself or to the family to which he belongs or is related, or to the farm or farms of which he or his family is the occupant, shall be fined not more than $100. (b) Whoever, when answering questions described in subsection (a) of this section, and under the conditions or circumstances described in such subsection, willfully gives any answer that is false, shall be fined not more than $500. © Notwithstanding any other provision of this title, no person shall be compelled to disclose information relative to his religious beliefs or to membership in a religious body. Tell your friend to go to this website: http://2010.census.gov/2010census/how/ and find the phone number to call to ask about this 48 question scam he received.

Last June, on a trip down Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway, we stopped for a night in Banner Elk, NC and stayed at a Best Western there. I noticed their sign about the HOG discount, and told the young lady at the registration desk that we weren't riding Harley's, had a Yamaha, a Kawasaki, and a Honda parked out front. She said it didn't matter, they gave the same deal to all riders. We were treated WONDERFULLY by the folks at this motel. Parked under the front overhang where the staff could keep watch on our bikes overnight. Got a free Welcome package that included a can cooler, a dusting rag, and a bunch of other stuff. They also told us to feel free to ask for towels to use to clean our bikes. Attached to this Best Western was a bar and grill with a biker theme. Great food, great service, what an exceptional place to stay. I really hated to leave the next morning and head on to the south. The next night we stayed at a Best Western in Cherokee, NC. What a dive! Not even free ice!!! Had to walk across the street to a C-store to buy ice. When asked about a biker discount, the registration desk said they never heard of such a thing and were sure that BW had no such offers. They were rude, the place was a dump compared to the one in Banner Elk......Cherokee is basically a tourist attraction that you want to avoid, IMO. I really think that it depends on which BW you stop at...some will give you good service, others won't. Just like any other chain when you come to think of it.

Well, they aren't very knowledgeable in my opinion. If it is true that you shouldn't mix synthetic and conventional oils, how do you explain the "Synthetic Blend" oils that almost all oil companies now make? That is exactly what those blends are, a mixture! Confirmation: https://www.mobiloil.com/usa-english/motoroil/car_care/askmobil/mixing_synthetics_conventionals.aspx Mechanics seem to have more Old Wive's Tales than the Old wives have!! -
Computer Gurus?
FreezyRider replied to Bob Myers's topic in Computer help and tips for using this site.
Bob, download and install the free version of MBAM here. Let it do a scan then remove everything it finds. I'd almost guarantee it will find stuff, always does when the others don't. Joe -

Not only can you switch back and forth, you can even mix it if you so desire. Not that I would, but it is fully compatible. -
Rule of thumb.... NEVER use the words "free" and "Garmin" in the same train of thought. Updates for my Nuvi are $79 each time or $99 lifetime (and lifetime is defined as the length of time that I own that unit, or until they stop releasing updates....which they can do at any time). Joe

And you outta see it run on Linux!! Fastest browser I've ever seen anywhere! Before the mouse button comes up the page is loaded!! SHAZZZAM!!!

I like Bummer's idea. Maybe around the outside it should say, BACK HOME AGAIN..... For those of you who don't know, that line is from the "State Song" of Indiana, which for years has been sung by Jim Nabors just before the start of the Indy 500. Goes really well with the theme of the quarter, and with the fact that the International is coming back home to its original spot. Have a listen: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZ8A7Q-SVHI]YouTube- Straight No Chaser - Back Home Again In Indiana[/ame]

Your ears will fall off before you can finish listening to 8 gigs worth of mp3's!!! Better get ready to see your friendly plastic surgeon!! Joe

Ken, you can use iTunes to convert and save a copy of your music in mp3 format so you don't have to start all over. I also use a free program called Switch to convert files in wma or other formats over to mp3 (that's if you're running Windows). In linux I use ffmpeg to do conversions.... unbelievably fast and can handle almost any format. Joe

The other missing "gotta have it" feature of the Valkyrie (at least for me) is self-cancelling turn signals. I'd constantly be "flashing" people if it weren't for those!

Actually, the Valk Interstate was made for at least 3 years, 1999, 2000, and 2001. I have seen all three of these model years, and that beautiful Blue/Silver model that I so covet was made in 2001. Here is an interesting head to head comparison of the 99 RSV and 99 Valk Interstate: http://www.motorcycle.com/shoot-outs/honda-valkyrie-interstate-v-yamaha-venture-15592.html EDIT: Oops....the Blue/Silver is a 2000 model, not 2001. In 2001 there was a black & silver as well as a black & red color scheme.
-
For what he's asking, you could find a very low mileage '08 RSV that still has warranty until 2013! I also love the looks of the Valk Interstate, and have drooled over the Blue/Silver or Green/Silver for years. But, after riding the Venture, I know that I wouldn't be happy with the comfort level on the Valk. I read a while back that someone here on this site had a Valk previously, then bought an RSV. After a few years he got the hankering for a Valk again, went and rode one and walked away saying "What was I thinking?"......just couldn't compare with the smoothness and comfort of the RSV. The one on ebay has no factory cruise control (throttle locks just don't get it for me) or CB. I gotta have both. Yeah, it has a 6 CD changer....and most people on this site criticize the RSV for having that feature due to skipping and the amount of storage space it consumes. On the Valk you don't have a place to plug in an MP3 player either unless I've missed something. The Valk will walk away from an RSV, no doubt in my mind. My 1500 Gold Wing would run right with my RSV, and a Valk could leave my GW in the dust. My perception is that the Valk is only slightly behind the GL1800 Gold Wing in power and acceleration. As I said, I love that Interstate....and wish they still made them. One of Honda's biggest mistakes was dropping that bike. If they offered a similarly style new model with the 1800 engine and upgraded electronics I'd be in trouble....would have some serious soul-searching to do! Good luck with whatever you decide. Joe
