  1. Skydoc do you know of a off the shelf paint that will match the colors on the bike. I have had a bit of faring holes and cracks that I'm repairing. I've looked at the duplicolor choices and haven't got close. I can have some custom paint made up but thought I check and see if you have already been down this road. See pic's of the damage below. Jasonm, thanks for the warning on the heal toe shifter. I believe thats what happened to the parts bike I have, the case was broken where the shifter shaft goes through. I will make sure to shift lightly and I will lubricate it. Thanks. Thanks again guys it great to have a source like this to ask questions and get quick responses. Yammer Dan, Think I'll hold out for alittle more. Besides where would you put it? I do have to admit this is the 6th bike in my work shop right now, getting crowded. Here is a picture of the rest of my running fleet. The blue 83 gold wing I just finished and giving it to my son. The burgman is my wife's ride. The 83 standard was last years project. Still chasing oil leak left rear of motor believe its coming from the drive shaft boot??? Thats what you get when you drive old bikes.
  2. I have not tried this stuff on that but "Rapid-Fix" is some of the best stuff I ever used for bonding things together. The bond is almost instant and hard. I have used it to make a new wooden post on the side faring connection and stuck it to the plactic and have a very hard bond. It's about $22 at the auto parts store. It's a two part system with liquid "Like super glue on Steriods" and then a powder in another bottle when you but together it's hard and tough. I would sure give it a try.
  3. THanks for all the comments. Thought I'd give an update. The "red" and "yellow" wire going to the ignition switch had a short somewhere in it. After several hours and replacing the yellow wire and all of the 4 connections, things were working fine then we reinstalled the wire going to the rectifer back into the connector and the problem resurfaced. When looking closley at the connector my son saw that it looked like it had gotten hot at some time and the connections were shorting out inside the connector. Pulled the wire back out of the connector and spliced the wire and all is good. So hopefully we "Exorcised" the ghost in the machine. Now working on the cracks and holes in the farings. Looks like PO had Baker wings and dropped it on both sides and ripped them out, leaving some big cracks and holes in the farings. Sodered the CLASS system circut board and its working again.
  4. Thanks for the comments. I paid $450 for it. The dealership was going to part it out rather than fix it. The PO had turned it over to them instead of fixing it up. Spent another 85 on Diaphrams. I figured if I couldn't get it running I could part it out myself and get my money back. I've also got an '83 venture and a '83 venture parts bike that help. This is a great site and great people. Thanks again.
  5. Picked up new project a couple weeks ago a 87 Venture Royale. Was told it run a several months ago. Carbs were partially broke down and in a box. Cleaned the carbs and adjusted the valves . Received the new diaphragms this afternoon and installed them and put the carbs back on the bike. Woo Hoo it started. Started it several times and warmed it up. Turned it off at the switch and it kept running????? It did stop when I turned off the kill switch but lights and everything else stayed on. Anyway I played with it and some times it works fine and other times it stays on. Will even start in the key off position, can turn key through the acc position and it kept running. Got it to turn off again (kill switch and then turn the key off,) and did some other things and noticed that lights were on again. It then worked fine turned off with the key and sat fine for another couple of hours without doing anything. Quit for the night without chasing it anymore. I would think it’s the ignition switch but is there anything else I should be looking at? Working on some of the cracks and broken posts in the farings. The replacement post in the last picture is wood dowel some sanding and glued on using Rapid-Fix ( great stuff). Here is a couple of pictures of the progress. Thanks in advance for any ideas.
  6. Thank for the comments. Took awhile to get it look'n that way. Here is a couple before pics. Bike was not running when I bought it, some vandals had cut the throttle cables and the front brake line. Found where PO had cut wires rewire horn ( rather than fix button), then had also cut the clutch switch wires and he cut off to the neutral switch wiring, wonder why it wouldn’t start. Had to replace the starter solenoid, starter brushes, and battery. Used steel wool and elbow grease on the chrome, and painted side cover, bags and trunk. Cleaned carbs and replaced the timing belts rebuilt the rear master cylinder and cleaned the calipers. Bubber, I have looked for the reason it warpped that way but I have changed it out so many times now and I don’t see anything that would have caused it. I wonder if it hung up sometime in the past and got too hot?? Giving this bike to my son. Just picked up a 1987 Venture Royale. Carbs in a box. Already cleans carbs and adjusted the valves now waiting on new diaphragms. Hope to get running this weekend. CLASS system showing E4 but the radio, cassette and CB all work. Have to get it running before I can check out the cruise. There are a couple pics of the new project bike too.
  7. I’m reworking an 83 goldwing . Had everything else fixed but could not get the front brake to tighten up. Might slow down the bike but not really stop it. Put new master cylinder on and tried three different old hoses, rebuild old calipers, looked like the rotor ran true when spinning the tire. Bleed the brakes about 20 times, replaced calipers from Ebay… ETC ,,,,,, Took to dealer, they spent three weeks and rebuilt the original master cylinder replaced brake hose with new and checked the caliper. Got a bit better but not right. Brought bike home and my son noticed that the caliper was slightly twisting when applied. Put a straight edge on the rotor and its warped like a bowl. It only out by 0.05 in but that enough to cause a real problem. Bought used rotor on Ebay and problem solved. Hopefully this may help someone else in the future.
  8. Thanks. For the next target, lets go with a picture of you, your bike and an Electrical sub station. Please keep you bike outside the fence. I'd rather see lighting bolts on the bike rather than in real life.
  9. Lets see if this works. Here is a picture of Me, my wing, and the front of Shady Acres Texas grocery store. Not sure if its Mom and Pop store or just Pop (with bars on the window to keep mom out). They don't even have a sign. Momma is riding with me today and preferes the wing seat. The '83 Venture is in the shed today.
  10. Found some other stuff that sounds very close. http://www.rapid-fix.com/Rapid-Fix.com/HOME.html Rapid-fix had two bottles one liquid like super glue and then some filler power that you pour in and put more of the liquid on and this stuff is harder than the original. Fixed a cracked saddle bag with it a couple weeks ago and it works great. And hardens almost immediately. and sanded smooth.
  11. A friend recently turned me on to Rapid-fix. It's a little expensive about $22 at my local auto parts store . Has a small bottle of liquid and one of filler. Stuff is like super glue on Steriods. I'm reworking a 83 goldwing and one of the saddle bag covers had a big crack. Repaired it with superglue and added Quick steel epoxy on the inside. When I put back in place it split again. Cleaned it uo then used the Rapid-fix and it came out great and strong. Check it out. This really is Great stuff. http://www.rapid-fix.com/Rapid-Fix.com/HOME.html It said you can brush off excess materials with paper towel. You better be quick. By the time I put the cap back on the bottle it was already hard. It did sand down very well.
  12. Great new, hope things continue to develop for the good. Prayers are still going out for fast and full recovery.
  13. We'll keep the prayers and hope for a full recovery. Thanks for the update.
  14. Happy Bday Brad. Would this be the first as a "Texan" with a passport. Have a great day.
  15. I have H/T shifter on my 83 that I took off a parts bike.Works pretty smooth. I have been warned that it can over stress the bearing and break the case cover. The bearing on the parts bike was locked up and the case was broken. Main point being I wouldn't go banging through the gears very often.
  16. It was a great time and good fellowship. Don thanks for setting this up. And Vance & Brenda thanks for the food, drinks and a very nice place to relax. The pictures should be good espically with the color coordination of Squidley's outfit.
  17. Mighty Fine look'n machine.
  18. 1983 has 44,000 miles.
  19. Prayer's are still with you both. Hope everything turns out alright.
  20. Your coming to my neck of the woods. I'll plan to see you there.
  21. I bought the DEKA AGM battery. Been happy ever since. I fought with my 83 venture not starting unless it wanted too. I had to keep the charger on it all the time to make sure it would start. I had replaced the battery cables, cleaned the connections replaced the voltage regulator, etc. . I had bought a Bike Master last year when I bought the bike just did not have the CCA to keep the bike starting w/o keeping the charger on it. After I installed the DELKA it has been great starts everytime and have not had to charge it. It was well worth the extra bucks.
  22. Congratulations. Glad the Venture took you all the way this time and you didn't hit anything in the road. Sounds like you saw prenty in or beside the road. Guess we'll have to start calling you a hard ass. Thanks for the pictures. See ya on a ride some time, Be safe.
  23. Shannon, Thanks so much for the up-date been checking daily on progress. Prayers to David and Kathy and you. Hopefully David will have a full recovery.
