1. Won't be able to make it this time, be on a cruise. Turn a wrench for me.
2. Sounds like the springs are wore out. I changed mine to Progressive springs and fixed the problem. Did you have the clunk before you changed the seals? Did you get enough oil put back in the forks?
3. Thanks good tip.
4. There are two "tabs " that engage the speedometer drive on the front axle. Someone may have put the front tire on wrong and bent these tabs. You might take it off and make sure these tabs are not bent over.. Good luck. If they are engauged correctly and you disconnect the cable at the top end, at the gauge, and then jack up the front of the bike, and spin the tire, the inner cable of the speedometer cable should be turning.
5. Here is a wiring diagram for an 83 hope it helps. Welcome to the site. Best 12 buck I ever spent. Great group and alway willing to help.
6. Just another thought. Are the "choke levers" going completely in so the pistons are not held open letting alittle gas in. These dump a little raw gas in the system to get things started.
7. If you get it started without the air filter on, look down the carbs and are the slides all moving correctly? If one is hung up it may have one cylinder keeping your idle up. Yes you should re sync the carbs after removing the jason mod. You should be getting around 8-9 inches of vacuum when resyncing the carbs at 1000 RPM. Not to ask a dumb question you have adjusted the idle screw ( under the left side) a knob you have to reach up from the bottom. When you worked over the carbs did you check the float levels? You can check the float levels on the bike by connecting a clear hose to the drain lines and then check that the level is .55 +/- .02 inches below the centerline of the carbs. There is a line on the side of the carb body that you measure down from. See page 4-8 in the service manual. What was the condition of the rubber plugs in the carb jet block? I have heard if they are bad you will have idle problems. Good luck
8. I believe this was called the "Jason mod". Here is a link to it. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=501
9. You might check the wires coming out of the stator. You may have disturbed these wires while you were working. The rubber gromet sometimes leaks and the oil will run down the wire and drip in that area.
10. I put Kenda Kruz on my 87 and they are working just fine.
11. Just in case there is a guy parting out an 84. Here is the craigs list add. Looks like he is NE of Austin. http://austin.craigslist.org/mcy/3953307277.html
12. Bob, Thank for the heads up. I won't tear things apart since it won't work.
13. I have an 83 parts bike with a CMU. I don't know if it will work on a 87 ( don't see why not). I'll check it out tomorrow.
14. Glad your OK. The bike can be fixed.
15. Check out http://www.bohannonbattery.com/html/motbat/20lbs.html Battery shows up in a couple of days, charged and ready to go. Purchased batteries for last four project bikes from them and all have been good.
16. Shell Rotella T 15W40 Motor Oil is what I'm using now. Check the back and you will find it JASO MA approved. Don't put anything that has High effency or friction fighters in it. Because it will start your wet clutch to slip. If you have either of those in it now get it out. My '83 taught me that in a hurry started to slip in 4 and 5 gear at full throttle.
17. Here is a good thread on replacing the slave cylinder. Look through the pic's and you can see what your dealing with. Might try some BT blaster on it and let it set overnight. www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=66302 Good luck. You might try LIGHTLY tapping the wrench back and fouth to see if it will brake loose.
18. Your gona love it. Did it to my 87 a couple months ago and it works great.
19. Welcome to the group. Good luck with your barn find. Just start working the issues and shorthly you will have nice ride. After that long you brake fluid is most likely turn into a gel. Plan on cleaning out everything and rebuilting the calipers. Some times it hard to get the pistions out. If your using air pressure put a block of wood to retain it when it moves it can shoot out with quite a force. I've had a couple that I needed to set up a master cylinder to pressure them out. There is a bunch of great people on this site and alway ready to help out.
20. One '83 running with an '83 parts bike. And a 87 Royale. Need to sell the 83 to make some room. I have MBD (multiple bike disorder). Its a retirement thing, fix'n up old bikes need room to start new project. Also have '03 wing, '97 and '01 vulcan 750 and wifes '03 burgman
21. Here is a place for parts. Check out Ebay for used and some new parts both.:thumbsup:Good luck with the project. http://suzuki.powersports360.com/fiche_select1.asp?cat=Motorcycles&mfg=SUZUKI&srt=yr
22. Remove the bolts and pull the exhaust pipe out a little to give yourself room to get that back bolt like Bill (KIC) said. The thermostat housing is Plastic so don't overtighten when you reinstall.
23. Put the bike on center stand in neutral then jump directly to the positive terminal on the starter. If she turns over its then time to check the selinoid. If she doesn't you might jump the negitive side bach to the battery to see if its the ground or maybe just a bad starter. If its the starter buy one on Ebay for a second gen and you will be much happier.
24. You might want to change the O ring on the shift indicator. It's the white triangular plastic piece behind the middle gear cover. It's held in by three screws. I chased small oil leaks for quite awhile on my 87 VR and after replacing that O ring she doesn't mark her spot anymore. Good luck.
25. You might have air in the system. The Foot brake controls the back brake and one of the front brakes. There is a bleeder up by the triple tree on the right hand side of the bike. This is the high point and most likely has air up there. Good luck.
