Yeah, that's why mine will be in a garage... Paint would be worthless. The fairing is banged up, pieces missing, all the luggage boxes have stress fractures, the only thing holding the side covers on is the drivers knees. Nah, I'm gonna take what I want and then sell it for whatever it'll bring. I bought it cheap. It runs good, so it should still bring 6 or 7 hundred. (I hope...)

Thanks Condor. I suspected as much. This one needs to be reupholstered too. And some of the chrome plating is coming loose on the bottom. Maybe I should just give up on the idea of having a backrest. I haven't even tried it on yet to see if I like it! I bought an old beater bike with lots-o-chrome but the plastic is shot from sitting out in the Arizona sun too long and a left side slide. Figured to strip the chrome bits and sell the husk cheap. Along with the seat back, it has trunk luggage rack, rear bumper/light bar, tow hitch, side hole covers, front air dam, passenger boards, front brake covers, and some other smaller pieces. Shame that they just let it rot. Runs good.

I picked up a used VentureLine backrest. I'd like to replace the nylon friction washer beneath the hangers due to deterioration. But, can't seem to figure out the trick. The diamond shaped part in the middle rotates 90°. The hex keyed screw in the center will turn either direction without any effect that I can tell. And the chromed plastic cover won't come off without applying force and I'm reluctant to do that without knowing that's the thing to do. Anyone have experience with these things? http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n163/coy55boy/83%20Venture%20Royale/backresthanger.jpg

Yeah, I thought about getting a TriWing kit for my 1st gen. $6500 for the kit, $1500-2000 to have it installed plus paint. $10K seems like a lot to add another tire. On the other hand, they do seem to hold their value better...

make that old plastic dash, etc, look new
coy55boy replied to bald josh's topic in Poor Man Tips and Fixes
303 Aerospace Protectant is my choice. It is designed to prevent sun fade on many types of material including rubber, fiberglass, plastic, vinyl, carbon fiber, the list goes on and on. It lasts longer than most other spray on protectants and repels dust. That's one of the things I hate about ArmourAll...it's like a dust magnet! You can get a 'free' sample kit here with several of their products although you'll have to pay $7 for shipping... Not affiliated, just a fan.- 26 replies

I finally got my new (to me) 83 VR on the road this last weekend and really enjoyed the ride. But, I couldn't get the rear view mirrors adjusted to suit me. It seems that their placement on the fairing is too low and too close to the centerline. I could only get a good view of my arm and the lane next to me on either side. I could never tell if anyone was directly behind. Has anyone else had this problem? And what did you do to correct it? Behind Blind in Tucson...

I've never wasted time trouble shooting a kill switch...but, I have wasted money buying parts after a side stand malfunction. The first time was my first bike (a little Honda CB360T). I had just purchased the bike and drove it around the parking lot. I pulled up to the store front and parked it. Only I didn't have the side stand fully extended. I walked around to the right side and reached over to remove the key. Suddenly, I'm standing there holding the key and the bike is laying on it's side. So, before I drove it off the lot, I had to go inside to buy new turn signals. The second time, it happened the day after I bought it (Yamaha Virago 750). I had gone to a girl's house to show it off and had it parked on the sidewalk in front. I was quite confident that the stand was locked since I had been leaning against the bike while we talked. After a bit, I moved away from the bike to sit next to the girl on her steps. And I watched in horror as the bike slowly, slowly began to topple over. Yup, another trip to the dealer for turn signals, mirror and clutch lever. Yup, got my sign. Now, I've got this new (well, new to me anyway) '83 Venture Royale with only 3700 miles on her and I've been thinking how to avoid this in the future and I've come up with a plan. I'm going to get a big piece of carpet and invite some friends to help me gently lower her to her side. I figure that once that's out of the way, I should be good to go!

Thanks, Yammer...I tried that. Completely disassembled the lock (with the exception of removing the tumblers in the cylinder). It looks like there was enough slack inside the unit to allow the cam to slip on the end of the cylinder when it turns. Over time, the inside of the cam got wallered out (southernism?). Now it just spins round and round without ever turning the cam. But, it's OK. Thanks once again to the VentureRider community. I sent an email to PJ who has a classified ad up for first gen parts and he's got one! Can't believe my good fortune. I thought I'd have to buy a whole bag just to scavenge a lock! In the meantime, I jimmied the lock so it will hold the bag on the bike securely. I just have to remove 3 screws if I want to take it off.

No, it didn't come with cruise control...or a CB. And the seller removed the lever covers before shipping it. But, that's OK. I like it anyway! I've since found a couple of minor flaws. The right side lower fairing was cracked all the way through and repaired with screws (ugleeeee). But, I already found a replacement part and once it's painted the right color will be OK. The other was a defective bag lock on the right side. Not the one that keeps the bag shut, but the one that keeps it on the bike. I already figured out how to swap the cylinders if I can find a replacement mechanism. Looks like it failed due to poor manufacturing tolerances. Anybody got one layin around? Overall, the bike was as described. Perfect in every detail. Everything functions like new. And since I found this forum, I can take advantage of decades of experience to make my experience with the bike the best possible. I've already ordered the 'group buy' fork brace and I'm working with Butt Butler to get the seat reworked. This winter, I'm going to take down the shocks and replace the stock springs with progressives. I'm also very impressed with the work some have been doing with different tire brands and sizes to improve handling characteristics. It's so nice to find people that share your passions and can help to smooth the way. With both of my previous bikes (Honda CB360T and Yamaha Virago 750), I had to learn by trial and error. LOTS of error! But, now I feel that others who share my passion for this beautiful bike will be my friends and neighbors sharing stories and tips and advice. It's been 18 years since I've been in the saddle, so I can sure use it! Steve

Here's a couple of pics of the '83 I just picked up off fleabay. Almost 3700 miles and mine all mine! http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n163/coy55boy/83%20Venture%20Royale/CIMG4200.jpg http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n163/coy55boy/83%20Venture%20Royale/CIMG4201.jpg

OK, payrment sent. Now, ask me how silly I feel ordering replacement parts for a bike I don't even have yet....

@Condor: I'm a new 1st gen. owner (so new in fact, it hasn't even been delivered...but it's on the way). I've read several threads regarding the inadequate OEM brace and can understand the necessity of getting a beefed up version. My question is, what makes this brace better than others that are available (like the SuperBrace for instance)?

I'm not sure these will help. It may depend on who made the hitch. But essentially, you'll have 4 points of connection. Two for pulling which will generally be to a hard point such as rear passenger foot peg or in this case the lower luggage guard rail. And another two to support the weight of the hitch itself and the 15 lbs or so of tongue weight. In this case, they've used the rear frame rail (right next to tail light). These pics are of an '83, but should be fairly close. http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n163/coy55boy/83%20Venture%20trailer%20hitch/83rear.jpg http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n163/coy55boy/83%20Venture%20trailer%20hitch/83side.jpg http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n163/coy55boy/83%20Venture%20trailer%20hitch/83front.jpg

I just bought an '83 Venture Royale. But, it doesn't have some of the goodies I want. To start with, I want to add a trailer hitch but haven't been able to find a supplier. If you know one, please pass it along. I'd also be willing to pick up a used one in good shape. Also, any tips for trailers would be helpful.
