  1. We went up on the Skyline Drive this past weekend. Man, there is always some good sights to see. Spotsy
  2. Thanks to all that responded. Gives us something to consider. The wife and I were heading to Shanksville this past weekend and some friends called as we were getting ready to leave Saturday morning so we ended up not going. I wouldn't mind going just trying to figure how to explain to her that I went a week late. LOL Thanks. Spotsy
  3. Last minute thought. Maybe you have a good area to ride. Me and a buddy are planning on riding Thursday and Friday leaving from Fredericksburg Va. We are about 3 hours from Gettysburg or about 3 plus hours from Seneca Rocks. We have been around Snowshoe and Cass area. We have been to the bride in West Va as well. In Pa we have been to the Lancaster area and been through Gettysburg. Anyone have any good loops, roads or sites to see in one of those general areas. We figure it will be cooler in the mountains. 4. Chris, good reason to be concerned. If it's that hard to turn I'm guessing something is wrong. Go to the Yamaha site and look at the parts break down for the rear axle and make sure the spacers are in the right place. Easy to get them out of place. Hope it helps. Spotsy
  5. A follow up to my low power post. Sorry it's been so long however I did order a set of coils from one of the junk yards and about the the time they came in I went in for a hernia repair. Not fun. Well, since I was off today and feeling better it's about time to install the coil. I installed the left rear coil and started the bike up and there was no difference. I scratched the ole pumkin and said I know that's what it was. Then after the bike cool down I realized ole dummy had actually replaced the right rear coil and not the left rear. Things are backwards once you remove them from the bike. LOL So I have now replaced the left rear coil and all seems pretty good as far as I can tell. Another couple weeks before the surgery will let me ride again but the engine does not have the back fire any longer so I'm sure that was it. Lessons learned, When you think things aren't running exactly right, then chances are they are not right. When many on here say check the coils, then check the dang coils. On a 4 cylinder with a carb for each cylinder, it's possible to have a miss and not realize it. Been working on engines for 30 years and never would have thought I could have a dead cylinder and not feel it. :-) Thanks to all that provided assistance. Spotsy
  6. Not sure where you plan to get on and off. If you are camping, Meadows of Dan has a nice place called Willville. Do a search and you can get the info. Not fancy but he keeps it clean. Coffee in the morning. I hear Grandfather Mountain in NC is good. Also, I hear a couple places in NC are closed on the Parkway but the web site should tell you that. Have fun and enjoy. Spotsy
  7. Thanks for the suggestion Cutty. I had already done that. :-) Spotsy
  8. I went through and changed the filter, cleaned everything, checked the plugs and put it back together. I started up the raod and right away this time I could feel a miss. Then it wouldn't miss but was low on power. I stopped and pulled the right rear plug wire and left it off and as soon as I tried to take off it stalled. Put that one on and then did the left rear. I was able to take off and it rode pretty much the way it was last week. I guess when I left to house is was hitting some and that made me feel the miss. Just wouldn't have thought that it would run that smooth last week and not be able to feel a miss. I know Redneck and several said it could be a coil. Good assumption. So left rear is missing and I'll assume it's the coil since a lot have had problems with that. That's easier than pulling the carbs off. I will see if anything drains out the carb today to verify. Anything else I can check? Spotsy
  9. Okay, I started out by putting the fuel line in a can and starting the bike up and it's pumping plenty of fuel. Went ahead and pulled the filter and replaced it. Drained the tank and checked for water, no water. A few little specks of crud but nothing out of the norm. Pull the petcock and it was clean. Pulled the plugs and all look good however the two front one's are a tad bit cleaner than the back two. Pulled the ignition switch off and check that and did not see anything. Cleaned the bottom and regreased and reinstalled. Like soneone else said, I unplugged the pump and without rerouting the lines I'm convinced the fuel is not the problem. Some as I unplugged that the bike will shut down once the carbs run out. As for air filters, I have the K & N's and I just cleaned and reoiled them a couple months ago. I pulled one side and it looked fine so I didn't bother with the other side. On Friday I will get it all back together and ride it for a while. Hard to fix if it ain't broke. I'm sure it will rear it's ugly head again. Spotsy
  10. Thanks to all that replied. Right now i plan on checking the petcock and see how much fuel is pumped. Then change the filter which I doubt is the problem since I changed it a few months ago. I will check the connections on the ruel pump and put some di-electric grease there. I see several have made comments about the coil's. I work on vehicles all my life however whenever there has been a coil issue you had a miss. Is it possible to have a bad coil and the bike not miss? The next time it happens I hope to be able to pull the tank and the plugs to see if any of the plugs are wet. Once again thanks to all. Now let me search for some coil posts problems. Spotsy
  11. Thanks Steve. I just changed the filter and plugs over the winter. Been about 3000 to 4000 since then. Rider Duke had Muffin man give me a call and we figure the best place to start would be the tank and another new filter. I also plan on putting a test light on the pump and running the wires up top so I can tell when the pump is getting power and putting some dieelectric grease on the pump wires. Maybe something has happened with the pick up but I doubt it. Time will tell. It's at times like this you wish it would go ahead and wuit so you can find the problem. :-) I just need to check the simple things to start with and was asking before I started that. Thanks for the suggestion. Spotsy
  12. I have a 99 2nd generation and about a month ago I was riding in some of the hills of West Va and it almost felt like the power was not up to par. Then I convinced myself, yep it's fine. Then I noticed one other time that going up a hill it just seemed down on power since I had to roll the throttle all the way up and it was slowly picking speed. I'm thinking, was the hill steeper than I thought. Once again I convinced myself after a few miles all was good. Mileage is still the same so no change there. Last week I ran it up to about 95 on the interstate with no problems. Yesterday the wife and I went for a ride about a 130 miles in the ride I noticed it felt like it was running out of gas and it was about due so I switched to reserve. Stop at the next exit and as I was taking off from the stop sign it felt like there was not enough fuel going to the carb's. Like I was trying to take off in second. I fueled up and switched back to normal. As we got back on the interstate I noticed it did not have the power that it should. No doubt about it this time. It was not missing and appeared and felt like all cylinders were firing. Up and over a mountain on the interstate in slowed down to about 55 mph and that's all she would do. On that mountain I would normally be at 70 or better going over the top with more throttle. I headed back to the house and figured when I got home, first thing to try was see how much gas was coming through the line and see if the fuel pump was running. For the 100 or so miles home the bike ran fine just did not have the power. It did backfire through the exhaust as I slowed down at several stop signs and I was figuring it was not getting the proper fuel. About 5 miles before the house my wife said it's running better isn't it. Yep, sure is. Get home and all is good. Ran it through the gears and no problems. Not sure where to start since no lights or anything. Now the bike is fine until it happens again. Question, has anyone had this happen before? If the pump was to quit working any idea what systoms you would get? Would it quit all together or would gravity give enough fuel to make it run and act like low power. As usual, any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. Spotsy
  13. Don, great news and hope you have a safe trip home. Everyone is pulling for you. Hang in there Don and I hope I can make the trip in June and meet the Oh Great One. LOL Spotsy
  14. Ok everyone up north, certainly not trying to rub it in. Just wish you could have been with us today. Rider Duke, myself and our SCRC group went for about 350 miles today and walked through the Paw Paw Tunnel in Maryland. Good ride and great roads in that area. Just hard to think that they dug a tunnel 3118 feet long around 1850 and it's still in good shape. Even saw a few bats in the tunnel. I hope everyone had a chance to ride today somewhere and here's wishing for warmer temps and no snow to everyone up north. Have a good week everyone. Spotsy
  15. We have had about 15 or so people and gone to Willville Campground just off the Blue Ridge Parkway several times. http://www.willvillebikecamp.com/ Nothing fancy there, just a nice quiet place to enjoy the roads and friends. It costs $20 a night for two people. He has showers and a camp fire every night. He has coffee every morning for the bikers that do not have everything and for a couple dollars he'll have a biscuit with chicken or sausage the next morning. Great place to stop over if you are riding the Parkway. BTW, we take a truck with us to carry all our supplies. Makes for a great weekend trip. Spotsy
  16. I had the same thing happen about 4 years ago with Yamaha Sports Center in Texas. They were great with doing what they could however the part was not available. After several months I found what I needed at a local Yamaha Shop with dust all over it. LOL I think it took Yamaha about 6 months before they had any more available. Glad it worked out ok for you as well. Now get the parts on and get ready to ride. I hope the weather up there is warming up so you can. Spotsy
  17. If you search on this site you'll find that many of us have either bought or made a bracket for the spot lights. It allows you to remove the fairing without removing the lights. Sure makes it easy. Spotsy
  18. The Yamaha book says, STR-4YE26-90-00 Front Front STR-4YE26-91-00 Rear of Front STR-4YE26-92-00 Rear Fender It shows for the Royal Star but I believe it fits a Venture as well. I'm pretty sure that the same numbers I ordered. You could contact Buckeye and they can verify or look on their web site under the catalog. Hope it helps. Spotsy
  19. By chance, did you buy the one from Orange Va? Spotsy
  20. Thanks for all the responses. Everything turned free and true when I had replaced the belt. I'm guessing the tensioner is not as strong as it was new. I'll listen to it until it brothers me to much. Thanks. BTW, the squirt of WD was just to make sure it was belt noise and not a bearing going somewhere. Spotsy
  21. Hey Duke, now where did you say the tail light bulb was? LOL I have over 40K on my 99 and there was very little grease left. BTW, anything special about fork oil? Might as well change that while I'm here. Thanks, Spotsy
  22. I have noticed over the last 3 to 5 years the fan belts seem to make noise after a short time frame. The last two or three that I have bought and installed, they started squeaking or making a little noise after several weeks to several months. If you spray them with say WD40, or let a bar of soap rub against the belt, they quiet right down and several days later you start to hear them agaim. Mostly when they are cold or just started. The surpentine belts is what I'm referring to. A few years back you only replaced a belt when it was cracked however the last couple I did it was for noise. I remember using belt dressings years ago but don't see that like you use to. Anybody else have this issue and what have you done? Thanks. Spotsy
  23. Hey Duke, I can't make this one since I've already commited to the Cruisers M & E that day. You'll have a good trip. Spotsy
  24. My 2 cents worth. I have a 99 and number 3 was leaking. I was getting gas running out of the number three carb when I parked the bike. The bottom of the carb was wet and leaking on the engine. For about a year I just shut the gas off and let in run most of the way out till last winter. I debated whether to do one or four and went ahead and did all four because if one is doing it it's only a matter of time for the other three. That resolved my issues. BTW, I looked at the needle and seats and I could see a little wear but compared to a car needle it did not look like it was hurt. Anyway, if your getting gas coming out then do the other three. Spotsy
  25. I was watching that one. The one thing that bothered me was no reserve along with the few flaws they listed. I guess without not being able to see it but you never know the rest of the story. I wish the winner happy trails. Spotsy
