I am a little confused on how you wired it, this may summarize it. Fused hot wire from the battery to the relay hot lead. Cold side of relay to passing lights. The source wire to turn the relay on can come from the headlights or whatever you decide to activate the relay. The switch should be hooked to this wire before it goes to the relay. Make sure you have a good ground. If it's wired like this I would guess you have either accidently gotten two wires touching or you have a bad ground. You might be able to check the ground by touching a wire to a good ground and then to the metal on the spot lights. Let us know what you find. Spotsy

Yamaha passing/driving lights screws don't fit
spotsy replied to dharnie's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Like someone said, get a set of allen wrenches with the ball on them. This isn't the only place you'll need them. The other thing, there is a guy that was making a bracket that would install to the bike and then the lights to the bracket. I believe they were $25 shipped. It allows you to remove the fairing without removing the lightbar. Do a search on lightbar and you should find it. If not, make one and paint it silver because it's fairly hidden. If I remember, I had to buy new bolts. Hope it helps. Spotsy -
Certainly sounds like we have a bad case of PMS here. Come on spring. LOL Spotsy

I did not read every post word for word. Now you know where and many have talked about a battery tender. If you plan on using a battery charger that you have make sure it's not over a 2 AMP or figure on replacing the battery if you leave it on too long. The smaller batteries need a slow charge. Hope it helps. Spotsy

In Va they use a bevel type. It slopes from both ways so a plow can push over them without tearing them up. They are made of metal and epoxied to the asphalt after they are counter sunk. I would say they stick up maybe a half an inch or so in the middle. There are plenty of them here mainly on the primary and interstate roads. I have not seem them pose a problem while riding because of their low height but I would not want to go through a curve hitting them wet or dry. The other thing that Va does is cut grooves in the asphalt on the shoulders and they act as rumble strips so if you drift on the shoulder you get a load noisr and vibration. It's mainly used on the interstates to wake people up that try to fall asleep. I would say that has been a big life saver to many but would not feel very good on a bike. Just ride down the road and have a tractor trailer drift over the edge to the shoulder and you can hear them. Spotsy

EXCLUSIVE! 2009 Venture preview
spotsy replied to spear's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
That just ain't right. I heard the rumble that FI may be in 09 but in that color I'm not sure even that would work. :-) Think I'll settle for an 08 with carbs. LOL Spotsy -
FYI all: Just to let you know I did order the Avons from Motorcycle Pro Shop. Took about 4 or 5 days and both were made right around the 40th week of 07. No problems with the purchase and would use them again. I believe they were $246 including shipping. Spotsy

The float measurements were fine and no gas in the floats. I do plan on swapping the floats when I re-install. I also plan on checking the vent lines and cleaning the carbs. Thanks for all the comments. Spotsy

I had two good rides last Monday and Tuesday so I figured the weather had turned cold again so it's finally time to look at my # 3 carb. It would leak gas after a ride one day and the next time it wouldn't. I tried the Seafoam many times and it still seeped out. So off the carbs came. Upon looking at the # 3 needle and seat I do see a ring mark on the needle but it's very hard to see and the light has to be just right. I have ordered new one's from Buckeye but my gut and experience tells me that may not be enough wear to cause the leakage. The question I have, is there any other vent lines or blocked ports that could cause pressure to build in the carb making it seep? Anything else that would cause it? Thanks. Spotsy

I would mostly agree with Midnight Rider. You could do nothing and still get 200K or more out of it with no problems. If you haven't been servicing it regularly but you just feel the need, then just change the filter and fluid. I would not recommend doing any kind of flushing. Also, please don't have one of the local dealers hook a pressure flush to it because that tends to stir up all the sediment. The problem I have seen, it's stirs up everything and many times it will lead to a failure within 5K or 6K miles because all the sediment is now going through all the bearings and ports. I work with a Fleet and to save costs we no longer service a transmisson unless we have a problem. We regularly sell pickups with 250,000 miles on them and they have never had the transmisson serviced. Just my 2 cents worth. Spotsy

Thanks Shooter. What's the date stamped into the side of the tire? That would tell you when it was made. Thanks. Spotsy

I read the thread from last August on Avon Tyres. Very interesting comments and suggestions. Thanks to Goose for his great evaluation. I have about 3,000 miles left on the Met's and have decided to switch to Avon's and go with the smaller 130/90 front tire. I checked a few on-line sites and see that Motorcycle Pro Shop is a few dollars less than some of the others. Has anyone used this company or know anything about them? I wouldn't want to get tires that's 2 or 3 years old. Thanks. Spotsy http://www.motorcycleproshop.com/tires/avon.asp

Hand Held CB Microphone
spotsy replied to dddeering's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Don, do you know if you still have to push the mic key on the bike with this one? I had a old Midland mic that I tried one day. It worked but you have to push the mic button and the button on the bike for it to work. I recall reading somewhere that someone had wired something on their bike so that was no longer necessary but maybe I was dreaming. Spotsy -

Just wondering if anyone has a rear brake pedal laying around that would fit a 99 Venture. It does not matter if the arm is bent some. I would like to experiment with adding to the pedal to make it a little longer. Thanks. I'm going to check ebay as well. Spotsy

I started noticing a gas smell when I opened the garage door. If it's not the petcock you might look here. Mine is seeping in the rear carb on the left side. I'm assuming it's leaking by the neddle. Look under the tank at the carbs and see if one is darker on the black cover than the other three. If that's the case just cut the petcock off as you come in the driveway. Gas will be burnt out the carbs by the time you cut it off. I still need to tear into mine, just to cold to have fun right now. Hope it helps. Spotsy

I have a 2nd like Brad T that I bought used in 02 or 03. I would have thought they were all the same but I guess not. Like Brad T, I have to push both buttons together and the clock shows up. And don't feel bad, as I recall the manual with my 99 does not talk much about it. I figured mine did not have one. About 2 months after it was road ready I was riding with another Venture rider and asked what time it was. They turned the key on and said 2:00. I tried mine and I was like a kid in a candy store. LOL My guess, it's there, but what do I know. Hope it helps. Spotsy

Rear Shocks goin bad.
spotsy replied to BuddyRich's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I have a 99. Mine has been done twice under warranty. Both of these were the new style unless they have updated again. One in Nov 04 and the last one in Dec of 05. If it goes bad again I will not use Yamaha just because of the failure rate. I know someone else makes one just not sure who it is right now. I think a few dollars more but it's got to last longer. :-) Spotsy -
Someone gave me an old windshield. I decided to cut it down. Everything worked great and now I have a short winshield and a tall one. One thing I noticed. I put some duck tape across the old piece I cut off. When I pulled the tape off the coating came with it. I then tried, notice I said tried, to clean that piece of windshield. If the coating is coming off, do like someone else said, go buy a new one. Hope it helps. Spotsy
