Advantage/ Disadvantage
GeorgeS replied to Dano's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Remember, the 1300's weigh more. Basic weight 785lb on the 89. ( compare this to your 1200 ) Also, the Bags have more wind resistance. I think the carbs are smaller on 1200 models. -
Been rideing Motorcycle Less then 6 months. Been Drinking !!!!!! ( stoped at biker bar ) I pay the same for insurance on my 99, GSX 1300-R, as on my 89. Venture. ------ Thats got to tell you something -----

Concours 14 -----It based on the ZX14. Different frame, full fairing, bags, and a somewhat detuned ZX-14 Engine, ( It only puts out about 145 HP ) $12,899.00 http://www.kawasaki.com/Products/SubCategory.aspx?id=25

A reasonable price for a good quality meter is $30 to $50 bucks. The $10 ones are junk !! Get the Digital type. I have 2 of the $10, type, they both crapped out!! The last one I bough, cost $60.00 and I am very satisfied with it. For the units I used on my job for the last 30 years, I always spent about $125.00 for a Good One.

Maby, you got a load of water in your last fill up !! Try about 1/4 can of HEET, if water in gas that will clear it up. Open Carb Bowl drains, ( all four ) and let fuel pump run gas thru them. ( but do it outside, and have water hose at the ready ) You might also, do a complete tank drain, might be crud in tank. Fuel filter may need replacement. Double check your plug caps, might not be on tight.

If you really want to ride in Mexico, I would sign up with a Commercial Tour Ride, useing Rented bikes, and stay with the Group. ( there is safty in numbers, as they say ) In the long run the Cost would probably be less, and safty factor much higher. And the bike provided, would be much more suited to the road conditions down there.

Find the 3 wire Plug, between the Stator, and the Regulator/Rectifier unit. This plug has always been a trouble spot on Ventures. Open it up , check for burned pins, or dirty conntctions. ( might be your problem ) ( you have to find this to change the regulator anyway )

Computer Monitor Unit. It is a couple of Circuit boards, inside the Center of the Instrument Panel. To get to the CMU, remove headlight, and the windshield, then you can access the Speedo Cable, and a few bolts, to remove the entire Instrument cluster. If you do this, be sure to Lubricate the Speedometer with light lube oil. Also greese the Speedo cable, as part of this job. Also replace any burned out Instrument panel bulbs. Also, the Circuit boards usually need some resoldering for cold solder joints, ( I have not done this, but sombody has the details and will supply them, if you need the info ) For cleaning electrical contacts. use CRC Brand, 2-26, electrical contact cleaner, Avialable at Lowes, and Home Depot. You may have to remove some of the relays mounted in front of the Instrument cluster, if so , be sure to clean all those plugs also.

engine cuts out at 6000 RPM
GeorgeS replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
First thing I would do is Install a new set of PLUGS. Remove the Plug caps, and measure the resistance thru them, should be 5000 ohms + or -. Screw out both ends of each plug wire, and nip off about 1/4 inch, and reinstall. Drain your Gas Tank, at the Petcock on right side, Empty it !!, Add some new gas, and 1/2 can of HEET, make sure not water in tank. Drain all four Carb Bowls, and let fuel pump run some gas thru them. Also run 1/2 can of Sea Foam thru 2 or 3 tanks, this might clear it up. Find the 5 wire plug, left side, that goes from Ignition pick up coils, too the TCI. ( about where you left knee rides ) open this plug, and clean contacts, This plug is a common trouble point. If all above does not help, then remove TCI, remove cover, dry it out, resolder connections to circuit board. Clean the contacts on both plugs, male and female. ( all old 1st gens need this done irregardless of any other factors) ( to remove moisture, put unit in Oven at about 110 deg F. for couple of hours ) -
My 89 does the same thing. Since New. However, seem's to be louder now after 60K . Only on Deceleration. I am useing 15W50W Mobil I. Seems louder with this oil. You could try Castrol 20W 50W, might quiet it down. Its has been my opinion that this is common with most 1st Gen Ventures. However I may be wrong on this.

My 2nd Gen is sick...
GeorgeS replied to Cerviperus's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
How a plug " Looks " means Nothing. I have bought NEW plugs, and found bad ones out of the Box. If your haveing a problem with one cylinder missing, Replace the plugs before you start Ripping and Tearing Anything Else. -
2.2K ohm, ( 2,200 ohm resistor, ) 1/2 Watt, avialable at Radio Shack, or any electronic Supply outlet. Simply cut off the old sensor, Solder the resistor to where you cut it off. Solder a new length of wire to other end of NEW resitor, Then Cover the Entire new Resistor, and solder joints with Heat Shrink tubeing ( avialable at any auto parts store ). Now Hook the new Pigtail, from your new resistor, to a " Switched " 12 volt source. --- Be sure to Use Rosin Core Solder ---

My 2nd Gen is sick...
GeorgeS replied to Cerviperus's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I would have Replaced the plug that was Dark. Also, might be the coil for that plug should be replaced. Also, take cap off that plug and measure resistance thru the Cap. Should be close to 5000 ohms. Did, you closely check, the Choke lever cable to lft rear Carb, to make sure it going fully back to the Un Choked Position ?? Next time you pull the Tank, and take out All Four Plugs, I would also do a Compression check, Post results of this test. Question: ?? As long as you had the tank Off, WHY Did you NOT Replace All the PLUGS ????? -
After you hook the modified resistor ( in place of the sensor ) and hook the new resistor to " Switched " 12 V source, then measure the voltage to grd on the output side of the new resistor, you should read about 3 to 5 volts. This voltage is whats seen at the input to the CMU. If thats OK, follow the wire thru a Plug that goes to the CMU. might be an open connection, or bad connection in that plug. If thats OK, then you might have to open up the Instrument panel and do some resoldering. Or, just clean connections inside the instrument panel.

I recall sombody said he installed new rubber Intake manifolds, with New O-rings. and still had intake leaks. Fix was to re install with the new O-rings, AND Gasket Sealant !! Leak was where the manifolds bolt to the heads. Just a thought. but worth checking.

cleaning wiring harness connectors
GeorgeS replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
With a spare harness, I would start with WD-40, as it is a Degresser, spray all the plugs, let soak a couple hours, blow out with compressed air. Then use the crc 2-26, and blow out with compressed air, and If really bad, you might have to do some hand work with small tools and light abbrassive of some type Then check thru every wire at each plug with ohm meter, for a Zero ohm, dead short reading,- 7 replies

Uncouple CB antenna
GeorgeS replied to Lepapehermann's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Remove Antenna connecter at the opposite end. Read Resistance from Antenna element to the center conductor at opposite end, Should be Zero Ohms, ( dead short ) Now read the mount base point thru the outer shield of cable to the Connecter at opposite end, should be Zero ohms, ( dead short ) Now read at opposit end, Center conductor to the outer shield, should be Open, NO connectioin, ( Or Infiniate ) ---- Question: Is you AM FM Radio Reception Normal ??? IF So, then your antenna is most likley OK. ---- Question: You say the CB Reception is OK, Can you hear stations talking 10 to 20 miles away, and maby some Skip Reception from other States ?? If So, then your antenna is most likley OK> ((( OR, can you only hear another station within a couple of blocks? take some time with this check ))) From the looks of the photo, you posted, I doubt there is a problem there, at that point, UNLESS the OHM meter readings Confirm that there is one, If ohm meter readings Indicate, a Bad Cable, it could also be at the other end. OR the Cable may have been damaged at some point between the antenna and the CB receiver. I am assumeing that on the 2nd Gen the ONE antenna feeds both CB and the AM/FM, ----- Correct me on this if I am wrong. HOwever if AM is OK, then your problem is most likley the Audio from the Microphone is not getting to the CB transmitter, OR, the Transmitter is actually bad, But this would be very Rare !!!! Then check the cableing from the Intercom system, cables to the CB Unit. Start by locateing all the Plugs, remove and install them several times. ( Pull up the service manual on this web site if you do not have the service manual. Schematics near the last chapter show plugs ) Is your Audio good thru your Intercomm system to the passenger position ????? If no audio to the passenger on intercom, then obviously there would not be any to the CB either. Do you have another CB unit in a Car, or a hand held unit ??? If so, have sombody listion on other unit, KEY the Mic, and you should see a Signal Strength Indication On the Other CB unit installation . This would indicate your Tran, and Antenna are OK, but No Audio from MIC is getting to the CB Transmitter, ( Head set cableing , mic element, dirty plug connections between bike electronic units to the CB Transmitter itself ) Do a few more tests, and post, we need a few more CLUES, on this one. -
Noise from right rear
GeorgeS replied to Dano's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Pull out the rear brake pads, and re apply some of that brake pad adhissive stuff ( avialable any auto parts store ) to the " Back " side of the pads ( between pad, and piston ) I had this happen on one of my front brakes, I put in new pads, and simply forgot to apply the goop . First ride around the block, and heard it clicking. Darn, stupid me. This might be your problem. -

noise in rear of 88 venture royale
GeorgeS replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
When replaceing the Pumpkin, and Axel nuts, Gradually apply torque to the 4 nuts, and the main axel nut, and during the process Tap the assembly with a plastic mallet to relieve any stress. Before beginning the process, rotate the axel, and look for a position with least rotational drag. I do this in a 4 step process of increasing the torque on the 5 nuts. Also, when you get to about 1/2 of the required torque on the nuts, I start the engine, and let it spin the wheel I once had a clicking noise, once each wheel rotation, and this process cured it. Never heard it again. I could hear the noise at about 50MPH going down the road.
