  1. 83-85 Deferential/final drive & drive shaft. I have pondered the replacing of the 83-85 final drive and drive shaft with a 86-93 final drive and drive shaft but never had the need to do so. A friend has a 83 that the drive shaft/coupler was worn out and with no replacement available I decided to try. After measuring the two drive systems I found no difference from in the distance between the axle shaft hole and the flange that meets the swing arm. Also the swing arms of the early & late models are exactly the same from the pivot to the axle so there was no reason not to use the 88 final drive and drive shaft in his 83. We replaced the drive shaft and final drive and after 300 miles there is no problem with the bike. With the exception of the part number of the 1991 driveshaft witch changed in 91and reverted to the old number for the shaft in 92 – 93. Besides the fact that the 91 final drive that I have, will not let me put a spring on the holder at the end of the pinion shaft I can’t figure out what changed. Although I did not find a spring on the pinion shaft when I removed the drive shaft from the 91 final drive. So I would simply avoid using a 91 for this conversion. The conversion is simply replacing the 83-85 final drive and drive shaft with a 86-90,92,93 final drive and drive shaft and never having to worry about greasing the gears again. Enjoy Fred Vogt #1037

  5. I have never worked on 2ed gen ventures so I need a little help. Some one has pulled the brass plugs on the Carburetor and adjusted the mixture and the owner wants me to help him make an adjustment. I have to admit that I have no Idea where the mixture screws are on the Carburetor. Can some one tell me where to look? Fred
  6. Ops forgot about that, it's a common problem and I find that if clean or replace the O-ring on the Thermostat bypass it goes away. Fred
  7. The way I do it is to duct tape the new one to the old one and pull it through. In this way you have the cable in the same place as the original. It is not a hard fix, I attach the top end first. . Fred
  8. Frank I have the tool and it works fine. Fred

  12. "It runs extremely rich right now." You may have checked the intake filter, if not do so. While you are there check to see that the slides are all moving. they should all flutter at idle. you should also check the diaphragms on the slides. Fred

  16. It's no bid deal to replace the gasket on the rear Valve cover. There is lots of room. Check the gasket at the side of the head to see if it is hard. If it is still soft you may get away with cleaning the gasket and using some silicone gasket stuff. If it is hard then order the gasket to save down time. Fred
  17. This could be raw gas getting into the exhaust system or a lean condition caused by: carbs not seated correctly, vacuum leak of some sort. Fred
  18. It also may be the shift shaft seal at the rear of the motor. See: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?p=156922#post156922 Fred
  19. I can't tell for sure from your photos & I have never heard of a broken 84 frame. Only 83 frames are in question. I have an Jan-84 frame and a 91 frame and they look the same. Fred :cool10:

  21. I would first like to bring a fact to the table. We ALL tend to over do the oil changing thing. Yamaha calls for oil change & filters @ 7,000 now that is 4,000 over when we tend to change our oil so the oil filter never gets a chance to get dirty. In MHO any oil filter will do it you change at 3k. I use a spin on my ventures and was told years ago By a Yamaha Rep. that it was 1 ½ times the standard filter. Fred

Being retired I have all winter plan the summer trips with who I will see and when. At times I get the numb butt, but as said before it comes with the turf. Fred
  24. The two 5MM bolts at the rear of the starter hold it place. But I find that I have to remove the Thermostat housing to get it out. That means removing R-side lower. Fred
