Just when we hoped it was over... another 6-12" heavy wet snow forecast for the next 36 hours. This has been a brutal winter in the Northeast and I guess it's no April Fools Joke, just won't end! Got the RSV shined up, farkles installed, topped off with fresh gas -ready to ride. I'm envious of you guys that get to ride year round. Born and raised in upstate NY and love it although the weather, gun laws and taxes are making it tough to justify anymore. Awright, I'll stop whining now. Just a severe case of Cabin Fever. I feel better now.

D.I.Y. 4 Cylinder Carburetor Synchronizer
dalv replied to a1bummer's topic in Poor Man Tips and Fixes
Well, made an attempt at A1's sync unit. Looked pretty good until I hooked up to my RSV. My tubes collapsed (sounds like something my wife would say ) as I used flourescent light tube covers...only thing I could find locally. They are not heavy and rigid enough to withstand the vacuum pressure I found out. Looking online for a source and sent an email to one manufacturer in NH to see if they can supply me with 3/4" rigid. If I can find the tubes - I'll try again! Great idea by the way and with the right components works like a charm.- 35 replies

Craigr, Lotta good suggestions - Redrider hit it right on. We spend alot of time in the Adirondack Mts near Lake Placid and there is some awesome riding throughout the area. Lake Champlain and VT could eat up 2 weeks alone - not to mention NH and ME. Burlington, Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake, Jay, Lake George to name a few. We also spent alot of time in ME along the coast and inland B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L albeit touristy in July/August. I'm not a fan of Niagara Falls (no offense) kinda honky tonk although incredible to view at night under the lights. Should see it so you can say you did. I would suggest riding along Lake Ontario to Adirondacks / VT / NH / ME. 2 weeks is tough as there is so much to see and very different as you travel. 3 wks min I vote. Stop and smell the roses. Enjoy the ride! Dal

Randy, Thanks for the vision on what we are looking forward to. As ic23 said, we are still getting hammered here in upstate NY with winter conditions (snowing as I write this ) can't seem to catch a break. I did get out on my bike Sunday for a short jaunt, hit the mid 40's and sunny before the crap weather moved back in. Nothin' like you described. It has been a brutal winter...can't wait for it to stop! Nobody told Mother Nature that it is SPRING!!! Gonna happen soon...just gotta believe. Ride safe and count your blessings. Dal

Thanks guys, currently the bike project is on hiatus as I am finishing the long ongoing bathroom renovation - lost interest half way thru but it's time to "get 'er done!". Fairing is still apart and I will look into the suggestions given in few weeks when I can get it closed up. Still have a few months before riding season - we keep getting blasted with snow, ice and cold up here in NY, which is getting old.... so this has given me the incentive to finish the bathroom. Looking forward to a ride down the Blue Ridge in mid June to see my brothers new place in Clarksville Ga. aboard the RSV. Mama's not sure if she is up to the trip - hope so, but if not this cowboy is riding solo! Later, Dal

New Idea for Air Filters
dalv replied to dlhoulton's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
OK Dennis, I'm in. Would love a little more specifics on what you used - you listed 4 sources but not sure which one you have on your bike (which looks great). Also what it would take to make the K&N work. I know there was some question on how it would work and filling in the blanks. Love your ingenuity - winter is here so the best time for me to make the mod. Thanks Dal -
Accessory Wiring ?
dalv replied to GolfVenture's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks Gary, Oops! I need to update my profile. I still do have my original 750 but it has taken a semi-retirement since I acquired a '08 RSV. It's funny that I am posting all these crazy questions on the 1st Gen as I own a 2nd but it is due to the topic being on this page. I will look for the 87a relay and use your suggestions. Accessory Wiring ?
dalv replied to GolfVenture's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Clive, I appreciate the clarification - now I just have to find the switched power source..thinking like Gary said the running lites. I know which are the high beam and low beam not sure on the directional/running. Help? Gary, My apologies for thinking Buddy was the author of your post. I read so many different posts on this subject (hence the beat to death reference) I mixed it up. Like noted above I just need to get the switched power source and I'm good to go (I think) So...with that hurdle hopefully behind me, and I know this has be answered a bunch of times, it might be helpful to me and others if I could get direction on adding a relay to the headlight. I have a 2nd relay, one of the 5 pin type with (2) #87 terminals - hoping I need only to use one of the 87 terminals as there is discussion on whether this is the same as 87A. I'm using a 4 pin for the driving lights - unless better suggestions. Figure while I have the cowl off I will add both relays, put the dielectric on the connections, add aux from cassette to handlebar for MP3, Silverstar Ultra bulb replacement...anything else I should do? FWIW - I installed the 6 fuse block at the battery, ran (3) wires to the cowl - red, black, green. Plan on using red for running lites power. Should I use the black to ground the lites to the battery or is grounding it under the cowl better? It might not matter just asking what you would do. The green I thought I would cap and label for future power - suggestions? Wow, just read this post - a lot of questions. Here's a summary: 1. Identify switched power source 2. Headlight relay wiring schematic 3. 4/5 pin relay preferred application 4. Suggestions on work items under the cowl 5. Ground to battery or frame under cowl. 6. Future power wire use Thanks, Dal- 39 replies

Accessory Wiring ?
dalv replied to GolfVenture's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Guys, I know this subject has been beat to death but I have the relay, lights, illuminated toggle switch, accessory fuse panel, all in place. Before I put power to it, just want to make sure I'm not gonna fry somethin'. What I don't understand is the schematic below - it shows the wires going past #85, 86. I did find some descriptions saying to hook up to these terminals but wanted to ask for clarification on the drawing. How come it doesn't show a black dot at these terminals like the others (30,87)? So...if you would be so kind as to explain it one more time I would be appreciative. As Buddyrich wrote earlier: Note he has them reversed from the drawing but I assume it doesn't matter? He has them connected to the respective terminals I am confused about. Remember I have 3 poles on the illuminated switch. Thanks Dal " That's about it. You'll want the relay to carry the load. Switches aren't made to carry hi amps. The basic 4 pin relay is all you need. Take a fused 14 gauge wire and run it to the relay from the battery. Connect it to pin 30. Then take a wire from pin 87 to the lights. Next get a wire and ground it. plug it into pin 86. Now tak a wire and run it from pin 85 to your switch. Then on the other side of the switch run that to a hot wire, I use the front running lamps. This wire does not need to be 14 gauge, it can be 18. The wiring diagram is on the relay. the pins will have numbers or be arranged according to the diagram Gary http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/DrivingLightAdditiona.jpg- 39 replies

Rear mono-shock replacement questions:

No problems with mine yet but curious. Is the Works unit air adjustable? -
The Venture must be one of the best bikes out there for bang-for-the-buck.
dalv replied to Humbucker's topic in Watering Hole
I still ride my '78 750 Special that I bought new. While I love that bike it was too small for my wife and I to tour. We rented a couple Harleys for a long range test drive and I had settled on a new RoadGLide as I like the fixed fairing. Two problems with the RG... 1) Still have a son in college @ $35K/year 2) Roadie is $25K new. So I pestered the wife for several years (pulled out all the stops...mid-life crisis, getting older need a new ride before I can't get it off the kick stand, etc.) She kept saying when we're done with college and after she replaces her 10 yr old car. New RG looked dim. Then I saw the ad for used '08 RSV with 1600 miles. Well, rest is history..took the wife for a test ride (be nice) and she loved it. Brought it home for 40% of the cost of the RG (really, look around deals are out there especially this time of year) The Venture is everything you mentioned and more. With this site and the experience of the members, you can save alot of time and $$$ customizing the bike and still be in for a lot less :mo money: So keep your eye open for bikes on Craigslist and check out dealers till you find the one with your name on it and plan on adding extras over the off season - you won't regret it! -
"the RK cans have a nice sound, just a tad louder than stock pipes I found but from the cockpit give a nice rumble sound..." SeaKing about summed it up..I'm finding they are getting better sounding the more I run them. Kinda Harley like but not too loud. Sorry I don't have the means to record them. Best part is, if you go with them and don't like 'em you can put the stock ones back on in a half hour or so. No brainer. Midlife - nothing else required. Made the brackets, bought the clamps and reused the (2) short bolts from the original muffler to attach bracket to the RK can. I did put a little loctite on the bolts and antiseize on the pipe before slipping on the can - hoping it will help later if I ever want to remove them. SilvrT - thought about painting but figured it would scratch too easy and end up looking nasty. What paint and prep did you use? Note: called the dealer back on the whine and he said he didn't forget me, just busy. Hmmm:8:
-
Yeah Tar, SeaKing is right. I just posted a wanted ad in the motorcycle section of Craiglist and got a response in a day or so from a guy that had them in his garage since new. From what I understand get a set before 2005 for best results. The pipes had FWIW - I got the clamps from Zoom cycle (888)316-1994 for $40 include shipping part number 31-9920. Gotta call no web ordering. I love the sound - now just gotta get rid of the dreaded chirp! Just replied to another post on that issue. Only thing keeping my new ride from being "perfect" Let's see: Owned it 1 month = *Handle bar risers *Knee deflectors *RK cans *Utopia Pillow top back rest *Ram mount GPS *Wally world Platinum Burner passing lamps (still gotta wire - have the parts) Need: Wagner radiator grill Windshield pouches Luggage rack Kurakyn long horn dually highway pegs mud flap Leather Gas Cap cover (to keep reflection off windshield or new Clearshield) Saddle Bag Liners Butler thumb screws to attach rear saddle bags Butler thumb screws to attach seat. LED brake light / tour pack lights ...Oh yeah!!!

Some new thoughts on clutch basket whine
dalv replied to straycatt's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
NBOWERSOCK and others, I have the 08 RSV, bought used about a month ago with 1600mi on it. Noticed the chirp/whine while test driving but fell in love with the bike anyway. Been reading all the posts on the condition, changed the oil to Rotella TP per earlier success story...to no avail. It is disturbing how loud it is (unless I wear ear plugs). Even installed the Road King pipes which is a nice change in the exhaust note but doesn't cover the chirp. I have a call into the local dealer and he claimed to know nothing about the problem but would put a call into the manufacturer rep who he says is a great guy (we'll see). I do appreciate the details of your experience and hope to see similar results. Any more info would be great. Will get back with what happens in my case. Thanks Dal -
Hey guys, Wanted to pass a long some pics of the change over from the stock mufflers. Used the template measurements from earlier posts for the brackets and it worked great. I left the baffles intact on the RK cans for now as some guys mentioned the sound gets better with some miles - can always go back later and pop out one or both of them if I want more noise. Picked up the cans on Craiglist for $20 and $40 for the clamps so not a bad mod cost wise and took a short run yesterday and the sound is definitely better. The info on this site is invaluable - thanks to everyone. By the way '08 RSV I bought a month ago with 1600K on her - now 3600.

Getting a first bike soon and need a gear checklist!
dalv replied to GAWildKat's topic in Watering Hole
My lovely wife of 30+ yrs (and HS Sweetheart) and I have been riding together all that time. I bought the 750 in 1978 and continue to ride it to this day. I agree with hig completely. We just moved up to the Venture ('08 S) for the comfort reasons he noted. The size and weight of the Venture can be quite a handful for the inexperienced. That, coupled with the availability of the V-Stars for very reasonable pricing especially this time of year as people look to unload before winter are valid points to consider. I understand the attraction of the Venture but you might want to think about working up to it's size. Remember the old saying: " 2 types of riders...ones that have dumped their bike..and ones that will!" (Easier to pick up the 650:doh:)
