Ok, before I decided to fix my original tank, I took RandyR up on his offer to sell a gas tank to me. only caveat is that it is a black tank. I just set it on the frame and took some pics, I kind of like it. opinions anyone?? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ solution B is that Jus Monkeying Around member was a big factor in fixing my original tank and that I should have it painted. He offered to pick up supplies and help me do the repair. Well at the Houston Maint Day, we did just that. We fixed the hole and another Hal is going to paint it. I will post that later as it comes along.

Ok, looks like I am going to make it to maint day. I will drive my little truck since I don't have quality time to make gas tank repairs. I will stay with Squid and make to the new Luby spot for Brake-fast. I will be an assistant to those I can help. I will bring my lift adapter and some assorted tools.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ looks like a good product. I will check it out more later. I have a replacement tank coming to use while i work on mine. thank you, Dale. Dale in La.
I am gonna drive the cage to maint day and be a slave. I will work on my tank next week. What do you line the inside of the tank with?
A lot of good information here. RandyA and i have arranged a deal for me to buy a tank he has. I will put that one on the scooter. I will remove my tank, decontaminate it, take it down to the bare metal all around to make sure that this is the only hole. then I will choose a method to seal and body fill and paint. then get some more pinstriping and it should be ready for the bike. I appreciate everyone's input on this. I will just be glad when this one is behind me. nothing like a problem to pop up in the middle of everything else going on!!
I don't know if anyone here saw my thread, but i have a hole in my gas tank. it was previous damage fixed by previous owner that rusted through and I found it tonight (tues 8-17). I don't have proper time to fix and make it there safely. So, with that, I won't be making the day. what a pain. we have had a streak lately of junk coming our way, so say a prayer for better times for us. I am working with a couple members on a tank replacement and painting of said tank, so we will see how that goes. I didn't want to, but I am gonna replace this tank as I don't know what else may be under the paint. I will find out when my replacement tank is on.
Does anyone else have an experience, opinion or knowledge which is better - quick steel or JBWeld?
-
yea. this is gonna take me 2 nites. 1 nite to drive in for part and then prep and 1 nite to fix setup. I will re evaluate my time schedule.
does anyone know if wal mart carries the gas resistor epoxy? or is that a auto part store part?
-
I had thought about the JB weld route. I have some too. does the tank have to be completely dry? Do i need to pull the tank off the bike? this would hold me over. how long would this patch last?
I am curious, what year did the black tank come from? this seems like a good idea. PM with a price, please. also, do u know how much steve would charge for the paint job? thanks.
````````````````````````` how else are going to get the cat out if you don't drill ?? the noise will hurt that cat's ears for goodness sake !!!

I am open to suggestions - but the kind o guy I am, it would be so nice to have the original tank usable on the bike instead of it doubling as a BBQ pit. just hoping really hard here. any one up to the job??? I will price one from pinwall in the mean time.

the pics are not so good, but i hope you get the general idea. ok, so i go to the shop to prep my scooter to make texas maint day coming saturday. I pull off the cover and find a chip coming off the tank and a big stain on the paint. I check for leaking brake fluid, it's clean and dry - so ruled that out. I checked my cover and nothing there. I rub my finger over it and it smears a bit and smells like gas what the heck????? I think to myself. then it dawns on me - i knew from the purchase that the bike was a salvage title. the seller, of course, makes it sound like a fall over, then totaled by INS company. the leak has to be coming from the inside. oh, good grief charlie brown. what next. I drain the tank into a gas can, then i start by pulling away the chip to find body filler. the body filler is, of course, soft and easy to cut off. I find the hole that was ground, repaired, ground and then filled, smoothed and painted. now i have this mess to contend with because who ever did the repair, did not do it for longevity sake. that is my opinion cause it is now my mess. I don't do body work much less gas tank repair. I assume a repair is gonna b much cheaper than a replacement tank. Does anyone here do gas tank repair. Maybe I can get lucky and someone within driving distance ( 8 hours or so) does and wants to take my job after giving me a quote - so what do ya'll think

Annie, it seems like the majority of us need to know ya'll's itenerary. So when you get a plan, let us know. If ya'll are going to run through Texas and/or Louisiana, let us know so we can all meet up.

~~~~~~~~~~~~ there are times when wire size is matched to system output. If the output is increased, the wires get hot and you have problems. all Jimbob needs to do is get the upgrade hi output stator and he should be good to go. ```````````````````````````` Jimbob, post this question in the first gen tech section so the first genners can give you more information.
I agree with the previous posts. you get a backrest that matches the seats, saddle bag bars, luggage rack and passing lamps. price is Ok, but I would start at 7000 instead of 7500. You can always go up in an offer, but you can never go down. the mileage is less than 6 thousand a year. see how much tread is left on the tires and the tire's overall condition. If you get a bike that is ready to roll with only regular maintenance ahead of you, you are moochoh dollars ahead which makes the sales price attractive. Now you need to see this bike in person, as stated. look for scratches and dings. then take it for a ride. do a search here for what to look for when inspecting a bike in person. look at the oil sight glass to see what color the oil is. same for brake and clutch fluid reservoirs on the handle bars. does it shift hard or smooth once warned up. how easy does it start or not. what sounds does it make when you turn the key to on? are the speakers blown?
I don't have an answer, but I will add my experience and what I do. Since I had read that battery tending chargers are a good thing, I bought the Schuman's battery maintainer. It is a 1.5 amp charger with the ability to sense whether or not my 04 RSV battery is fully charged or not fully charged. If not fully charged, the charger will charge until fully charged and then stop charging. it waits until the battery charge reaches some predetermined lower than full level and then charges. I will go a week or so without riding because we are just busy folks and I like the battery maintainer. I have owned this 04 RSV for about 13 months and have had the maintainer for 12 of them. I don't know how old the battery is other than this year I have had it. I unplug the maintainer to start the 04 RSV every 3 to 5 days. once the scooter has run a bit, i turn it off and re-connect the maintainer. If i go for a ride, I unplug the maintainer and then re-connect when I get home. I have had no battery problems and that makes it worth every bit of the 25 bux i paid for the maintainer and then some. I have about 12 batteries to keep up with in all the stuff we own ( boats, cars, truks, ATV, traktor, etc) so one less to worry about is fine by me.
